Vincent Grant Gill (born April 12, 1957) is an American country music singer, songwriter and musician. He has achieved commercial success and fame both as frontman of the country rock band Pure Prairie League in the 1970s and as a solo artist beginning in 1983.
Alison Maria Krauss (born July 23, 1971) is an American bluegrass-country singer and fiddler. Her soundtrack performances have led to further popularity, including the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, and the Cold Mountain soundtrack, which led to her performance at the 2004 Academy Awards. Platinum-selling Raising Sand (2007) was the first of her two collaborations with English rock singer Robert Plant.
Rickie Lee Skaggs (born July 18, 1954),[6] known professionally as Ricky Skaggs, is an American neotraditional country and bluegrass singer, musician, producer, and composer. He primarily plays mandolin; however, he also plays fiddle, guitar, mandocaster, and banjo
"Go Rest High on That Mountain" is a song written and recorded by American country music artist Vince Gill. It was released in August 1995 as the sixth single from his album When Love Finds You. It is a eulogic ballad. Gill began writing the song following the death of country music singer Keith Whitley in 1989. Gill did not finish the song until a few years later following the death of his older brother Bob of a heart attack in 1993. Ricky Skaggs and Patty Loveless both sang background vocals on the record.

Vince Gill is that uber talented dude that every single person in Nashville adores and wants to work with...an amazing person. He tried to sing this at George Jones's memorial concert after his death, and Patty Loveless had to lead him through he broke down so hard...not for nothing, he's a fantastic guitarist, as well....

He also improvised a great emotional guitar solo when he couldn't hold his voice together, which was equally as searing as his vocals.

I hate that she spawned a generation of copy cats. For like 10 years, the nicest thing you could say about a girl singer was "she sounds just like Alison Krauss" People would recommend bands like "oh you'll like the singer, she sounds just like Alison Krauss" and I'm like why wouldn't I just go listen to AK? AK is the real deal. Why would anyone want to listen to a knock off?
AK's voice is so unique and beautiful. I still don't understand how a voice could be so soft and so powerful at the same time. I don't understand how that velvety softness could have so much volume. Her cover of "9 to 5" by Dolly Parton is a great example of that.

I’ll never forget watching one of the Crossroads concerts and seeing Clapton look a bit dumbfounded at our country boy, Sweet Pea, when it was his turn to solo. Good stuff. My mom lost her struggle with breast cancer after having beaten it once a few years prior. Unknowingly, it came back and metastasized to Stage IV all over her body. We knew she had a very short timeline, but we didn’t know how short. The entire time, she knew she was leaving us far sooner than we’d wanted. She was the strong, quiet, reserved kind of person who never let on how bad things really were. Thus, she actually moonlighted preparing all of her final arrangements for us. She died swiftly and mercifully on December 15, 2017. When this song played, I melted into a puddle of emotion because it encapsulated her fight and departure. We miss her so much, but she’s no longer feeling any pain and now standing with a new body in the presence of our Heavenly Father. She got the better deal in the grand scheme of things. Love you, mom!

Vince's silver, perfectly blended harmonies and stunning guitar playing when he is not the lead singer are examples of a tremendous freedom from ego and attention seeking. He is not about showing off or making a personal splash. It's about the music. He is a musician's musician.

I heard this song for the first time (or it at least stuck with me first) when it was played live at my dad’s funeral 11 years ago. It’s held a special place for me ever since.
His service was in a small, old wooden church not too far from Branson, Missouri where Vince Gill used to perform often when I was a kid.
I’ll listen to it every once in awhile when I need a cry.

This song recognizes the sadness of loss and the relief of knowing a burden has been lifted. As always the relief of that burden comes with a price. That cost is what we feel so purely here.

Because these three are master instrumentalists as well as singers they have the musicianship that gives each other and the listeners confidence with any piece they perform. They know exactly what they are doing at any moment and never sound forced.

Each of these artists are incredibly talented, being regarded as three of the finest instrumentalists and vocalists in country and bluegrass music, but where they really shine here is harmonies and with being just at home taking a spot in the background to make each other shine as they are taking the lead. You'll find all three of them on backing vocals and instrumentals for countless other artists over the last few decades, on top of their own careers as headliners. Tremendous respect for Alison, Ricky, and Vince and their ability to lift others up along the way.

A truly wonderful song. This is my first time to hear it, and like you Beth, it brings tears to my eyes because of its beauty and subject. This is truly a gospel song and I adore the message behind it and the angelic harmonies. Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder both have that ability to reduce me to tears by the emotion they bring in their songs. Emotion is great but empathy is better. There are certain songs I can't sing because of the emotions that accompany them. Thank you Beth for a heart felt reaction.

I’m an emotional beast as well. I’m 65 yo and a good friend, 90 yo, told me all artists are emotional. I said, I’m not an artist, I’m a musician. He looked at me and said, same thing. I’ll never be ashamed of my emotions ever again or run from them. Man, the wisdom one can glean from a conversation with an old man. Sorry, got off topic a bit, but you had me at emotional beast. I can see and feel your emotion every time I watch your presentations and I love you for it!

Beth, these are 3 of the most talented people in the business. Also these 3 and EmmyLou Harris are probably the most sought after harmony singers by EVERYONE. They are also each among the very best on their instruments. Vince also early on was a member of the band Pure Prairie League. Alison's voice has often been described as the sound the angels make when they sing. Side note. The guy who did th singing for George Clooney in Oh Brother Where Art Thou is a member of Alison's band. Alison along with EmmyLou Harris and Gillian Welch are the 3 voices of the sirens from that movie who sang Go To Sleep Little Baby. Lots of talent on that stage. Love your reactions, and this one certainly was no exception. Oh and Home Free does a great job in their video of this song as well. Rob does aa great job singing lead on this song for HomeFree. I think he sounds a lot like Vince when he sings it.

Beth, thank you for reviewing this song. It truly is one of the most beautiful ever written & recorded, and by 3 of the top musicians/vocalysts in Country/Bluegrass, if not the world. This song in particular is dear to me, as it is one of a select few I've used, since the passing of my wife of 32 yrs in April, to help "prime the pump" in venting my emotions gradually.
I would encourage you to explore more of the music of Vince, Ricky, and Alison. They are each master craftsmen in their own right,
P.S... Always excited whenever I see you post a new one! (and the little "Rar" art the end is sooo cute!) ❤
