Small complaint that it somewhat slams Captain Kirk. He never seeked out a fight, but if there was one, he ended it. And even saw that in Day Of The Dove episode. Understand that Kang and Marta would have been recurring in the aborted "Phase 2" return Star Trek continuation, like Shran in the Star Trek Enterprise series..

Great song Beth, I also love how the drum beat has a s sense of Scottish folk music. As the song progresses this drum beat changes but so does the intonation in the music.

I've loved this song ever since it first came out... and I also love the many parodies that have been produced. Some are really hilarious. Here are some: "99 Dead Baboons" by Tim Cavanagh, "99 Death Eaters" by Draco and the Malfoys, "99 Words for Boob" by Robert Lund, "99 Words for Vagine" by Dan the Engineer, "99 Words for Peen" by JDI-310 Productions.

I had an original Paradise Theater tour Tshirt and I absolutely loved it. I came home from work one day and was informed that my Tshirt collection had been donated to charity because “you never wear them”. That was the final straw for that relationship. I was single that day so I just want to thank Styx for giving me the freedom I’ve enjoyed since that day almost twenty years ago. BTW this is my favorite Styx song.

As a big guy myself, we tend to shut down our emotions because of the role that is forced onto us but that emotion is still there and effects us, even when we don't notice it/feel it and so when something throws us off that path we were going, it can make it very difficult to regain that path.

Beth? This song was poking fun at the then just beginning of the MTV station ('80), where everything was about getting professionally done video, to go with a hopeful hit song in the regular MTV rotation. Knopler is an incredible guitarist, who is a true student of the instrument, and as such he knows there's so many minimally talented guitarists in groups that hit it big. He's done work with all genres of music-jazz, country etc.

"Pieces of Eight" is my fave Styx album, it was probably their "Heaviest" album (listen to "Great White Hope", "Queen of Spade's" as the 2 heaviest tracks and "Blue Collar Man" & _Renegade_ with the heavy and Proggy "I'm Okay", "Lords of the Ring") but the other tracks sit between ballady melodic (uplifting) and Rock. Dennis DeYoung does some fine vocals and keyboards (great sound patches, to his favorite "Siren"-like sound and actual "Church Organ" for I'm Okay"). Everyone shines on this album. Be sure to hear the Studio version of Renegade as well :). - Thank you Beth! (...rar.) If anyone is curious . . . There are a few Prog Metal bands that have the familiar vocals of Styx. Vox Tempus Ice Age (from NYC. They just released an album in late 2023 after 22 years) Sun Caged (2 different vocalists from 3 albums) Sphere of Souls I think it will be VERY obvious which vocalists sound like the 2 main vocalists of Styx, and the music is well done with some exceptional musicians.

There's no shame in crying. It shows that you can be vulnerable and not afraid to show your emotions. Crying has a function to be in touch with a part of yourself, to relief yourself of grief, joy and other emotions we try to hide away in ourselves. Listen to music that touches your heart, enjoy views of nature that overwhelm you, be overjoyed with gratitude of receiving a gift but always let yourself to be human. A big, warm, comforting hug. Latha brèagha a bhith agad. Tioraidh an Drasta.

The orchestral sound behind the song is reminiscent of Phil Spectors wall of sound, especially as applied to the long and winding road. A key difference is the wall of sound underlies the rhythm tracks rather than being front and center. Brilliant work!

One of my favorite ballads of all time. I'm 53 years old now but when I was younger I sang and played guitar. I was "ok" at it. I always wanted to be able to do the vibrato but could never achieve it consistently or not at all. I have often wondered if someone that cannot sing that high and can't work the vibrato if taking singing lessons can actually teach someone to do both. Loved seeing you watch this. I was waiting the entire song for the end when he screams the course at its highest. On the album there is no breaks or intake of breath on that part. It's all one long ass breath that seems to go on for ever and ever.

Love this song but it is so obviously inspired by Gallows Pole by Led Zeppelin it isn't even funny. I said inspired. Not copied. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a compliment when bands do this. And Styxs' version is better than Zeppelins. And thats very hard for me to say. LOL. Tommy Shaw made Styx. Before he joined them, they were a semi, one hit wonder. After he joined them, they became huge for 3 or 4 albums. Then he left because he didn't like the direction they were going in and Styx faded into obscurity until they started doing the reunion tour circuit.
