It's from a concert named "The Dance" which was also professionally filmed and had exceptional audio recording too. Every song from "The Dance" concert is superb, and pretty much the best live performances of all the songs they do in that concert.
I had it on DVD and wore that thing out.
Best audio of any show I would say even to this day. Whoever mixed it - superb!

Having previously had Peter Green, Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer been members, damn that is a high bar to meet, but Lindsey Buckingham managed to meet it.
He's so good that both times they fired him, they had to hire two people to replace him and both times the guitarist was an RRHoFer (Dave Mason and Mike Campbell).

Stevie staring straight through Mick every chorus. Christine looks like she's remembering those feelings; Stevie looks like she's feeling those memories. What a terrific song and a massive testament to how professional these musicians are to push through what must've been really difficult emotions. RIP Christine.
I recently watched the whole concert. It was glaringly obvious that none of them wanted to be there with maybe the exception of Mick Fleetwood.

If I recall, this WAS their first true comeback concert 10+ years after the breakup. Coupled with this being the first song in the performance, they were remarkably professional given all their emotions towards each other.

It never ceases to fascinate me what they went through to make Rumours. Has to be the most personal album any band or artist ever made. And for sure, Beth, it took a lot for them to put what was best for the group ahead of all the termoil in their own lives. For that to have produced one of the greatest, most beautiful and most successful albums in history was the payoff they deserved.

You MUST react to Silver Spring, it's from this same live album/show., called 'The Dance'. There's a part towards the end of the performance Stevie turns to Lindsay at stares a hole into him while yelling the lyrics: "I'll follow you down 'til the sound of my voice will haunt you" and "You'll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you." To Lindsays credit, he doesn't break eye contact, and it's one of the most emotionally charged moments I've seen. She genuinely yelled the lyrics at him while looking into his soul. Its a MUST watch!

Yup, terrific. Silver Spring would be my second favorite live performance of theirs on youtube, this one is third. First, which I rank right up there with Heart doing Stairway and Phil Collins doing "In the Air Tonight" is their 1976 performance of Rhiannon on "The Midnight Special".

As a guitar player, Lindsey’s always been one of my inspirations as, like me, he doesn’t read music.
Not only one of the best songs of the era, your reaction to it, the chair dancing, reflects exactly the way I feel every time I hear it. If you haven’t already, take a look at Go Your Own Way from the same live performance. Unbelievably powerful.

The guitar solo in this song has always amazed me. It really only consists of about 4 notes and he spends the vast majority of it pedaling a D in two octaves, but it works perfectly. A great example of less is more.
Thats so interesting you say that. I sometimes think about Dreams and how it is mostly over two chords. They are great at taking something simple and making it feel like it moves somewhere. I think Dreams has won a patron vote so I'll be getting to that reaction soon!

In addition to Dreams, there have been a number of songs that I've been surprised to find out have only two chords, the latest being Sinner by The Last Dinner Party. I usually try to work in all 7 in the key, so it will be a nice challenge to write that simply.

There’s a live video of this from when they toured for the Rumors album in the 70’s, and of course the emotions from the recording are fresh, and the looks Stevie and Lindsey are throwing at each other are just pure daggers.
It's the 1982 version. Apparently Stevie and Lindsay did a bunch of cocaine backstage and had a huge screaming argument right before coming onstage

The juxtaposition of the harmony and the vitriol and anger and despair in the lyrics makes this such a bloody good song. The driving drumbeat and then the bass solo with the increase in expression, force, 🤌🤌🤌
Worth a listen to earlier Fleetwood Mac, with Peter Green, before Buckingham and Nicks joined the band - try "Man of the World", "Oh Well" or "The Green Manalishi (With The Two Prong Crown)" for vocal performances. "Albatross" is also well worth a listen (and was a UK #1), but it's an instrumental.
Although a bit late to jump on the bandwagon Lassie (this was 1997 after all) stoked to see you so genuinely moved! The entire show mind blowing- especially Lindsay’s solo in “I’m so Afraid.” Without a doubt one (if not thee) greatest across the pond collaborations all time. What you get when been together (the chain) for decades (but no more). RIP Christine.

My wife and I saw this concert at The Mark in Moline Illinois and we have been to a lot of concerts and this was the best ever

Another excellent review and musical analysis by Ms. Roars. This is probably the best version of "The Chain" ever. There are a couple of moments wherein the way they look at each other speaks volumes about how this song has has soul deep real life meaning about the long and tumultuous relationship between these two.
I love how fierce, seductive and determined Stevie is in this performance. She's also at a perfect age- more mature, contemplative and melancholy but coming from an older, more experienced woman. It really lends a whole other layer into the mix. More magical Fleetwood Mac.

Very happy you mentioned the Buckingham/Nicks album, which is excellent, and not easy to find in the original. The promise of the two working together was so evident. Glad to see you recognizing the amazing composition and vocal talent. I agree, I love how they each sing more, or less, at the ends of certain phrases. The harmonies are so good.
I have been a fan of Fleetwood Mac since my mom would pick me up and dance with in her arms around the house. This band has been a presence in my life since I was born back when Rumors came out in 1977. There was a point though where I almost lost this band. It happened when my mother finally succumbed to cancer. See fought a long time but that time came. That night I listened to a lot of the music she listened to, while crying like I have never cried before. I couldn't listen to The Chain. I tried to. But it literally hurt attempting to hear this song. I play bass and one year for her birthday figured out the bass line for her. I believe it's obvious Fleetwood Mac was her favorite band. Like most women her age idolized Stevie Nicks. My daughter's name is Sara. Another song from Stevie and Fleetwood Mac.
After her passing the first time I heard a Fleetwood Mac song was at CVS Pharmacy and it was Go Your Own Way and it was like 3-4 months after and the opening drum kicked in and Lindsey Buckingham sings "Loving you isnt...." I looked at my wife and said nope not yet, I will be outside.....tears starting to well up in my eyes.
Eventually I was able to come back to Fleetwood Mac and even more important The Chain. It's still hard though even after so many years it has become tolerable. I cried while typing this comment and listening to the reaction. Thank You Beth for doing this one and one other thing I love and miss you so much mom!!!! Sorry Beth Roars.

Beth there’s a CZcams video live FM playing The Chain from 1980, and this is 5 years after their breakup and the passion was still off the charts.. They sing it with a far more emotional voices (almost angry) as Lindsay and Stevie sing all the time staring right though each other.. good luck Jjh

That's the performance of the song from the concert and live album "The Dance" - hence the title card. The version of "Silver Springs" from that album became a hit.

On the the bass solo from John McVie at the bridge, thats one of those you can play a two second clip of and people will know it instantly.
Lindsey Buckingham is so underrated both as a guitarist and a vocalist. If you want to hear his voice at its best, try the song "Crystal' which some have mistakenly identified as being sung by Stevie Nicks.
As a College student, 0 years after it was recorded, this song captured my heart. Mostly for its raw emotion.
My favorite Fleetwood Mac song. This version certainly has a lot of emotion in it.

Beth, I love how much you love this song. It is my absolute favorite Fleetwood Mac song of all time. The bandmembers feelings cut through the performance like a razor sharp knife, and, the musicianship is incredible.
It always disappointed me that they didn't get Christine's "still hear you saying" echo in the live performances. It was a great part of the original.
At least I thought it was Christine but it sounded like it to me.
It's Christine and it's beautiful. I can't think of any reason it's not here because she did it live before except she couldn't do that high harmony anymore.

That was the name of the tour (The Dance). I know they're all really talented, but Lindsey Buckingham is the driver for the music. Such a great guitarist, vocalist and writer. While the bass is what everyone talks about, Buckingham's guitar building to a crescendo is what makes it for me.

Back in the 80s I went through Army AIT training with a young lady that had a huge passion for Fleetwood Mac, every time this song played she would respond in much the same way you did here, just total appreciation for the song. Every time I hear a Fleetwood Mac song I can't help but wonder how she's doing and where life took her
Great, GREAT reaction Beth!! Have always loved this song, but this live version (concert film/CD called The Dance) was phenomenal - Mac firing on all cylinders! The sound production on this was perfect. HIGHLY suggest checking this same concert's version of I'm So Afraid - Lindsay Buckingham is off the chain (pun intended)! Also, from the same concert - his solo version of Big Love/Go Insane would be a great review of his vocal/guitar prowess!
Can we just give a shout out to Christine McVie (RIP) - as much as Stevie gets much of the spotlight, Christine's voice is really what holds this band together (IMHO) - plus her keys are magnificent. I'm sorry our Songbird is gone! Cheers!
I can't believe it's been almost 27 years since this came out. And I think it had been about 20 years before this concert that this lineup had last played together. This is still one of my favorite albums of all time.

John McVie is so underappreciated as a bass player. He's always been one of my favorites - he pushes and pulls the beats around just perfectly; he and Mick lock in absolutely perfectly, but there are times when John hits a millisecond earlier or later to bring (or drop) just the right emphasis in just the right place. While there may be other bass players who are more technical, or faster, or more flashy, I can't think of anyone who's more skilled pushing and pulling while staying locked in with one of the most technical drummers around.
The bass on Sisters of the Moon in the Mirage tour, is incredible.

This recording of “The Chain” is from Fleetwood Mac's 1996 live L.A. show, titled “The Dance,” which spawned a live album and accompanying tour. “The Dance” was the culmination of a reunion for the classic five member lineup that had begun during 1992 when they performed together to support Bill Clinton's run for President of the United States. The Clinton campaign had adopted the Band's hit “Don't Stop” as its theme.
Talk about female empowerment. Only Stevie Nicks could write a song about how their relationship is breaking up then make her ex sing it.
Could you imagine every band meeting at that time? "Well, 😊I have this song." Two weeks later. "Here's my totally unrelated and not a response song." 😂
Bjorn did in ABBA. He wrote the lyrics for 'The Winner takes it all' and his ex Agnetha sang it.
Except Lindsey wrote the verse lyrics, the verse music, the intro and the guitar coda and the drum parts and is the one that arranged and produced it - even splicing tape with razor blades - after it was left for dead and almost didn't make the album. At the time Stevie complained that he asked for the chorus lyrics from her solo song - said he ripped the heart out of it and didn't care. Lindsey was the main arranger and producer of the band who had the vision for their albums. Their sonic architect. On The Dance he was the producer and musical director.

I love the raw emotion of the live performance, which barely seems abated after so many years. If you watch them perform the song back closer to the breakup, the tension is SO thick while they perform it!
There just are no words to describe this phenomenal band! The emotions, turmoil and the best of the best talent and skill of each member must be experienced to be truly appreciated. I will mention this as well. I really DO appreciate Beth Roars sharing all this information on the technical end of things. Because of the intellectual as well as emotional awareness, we can learn to enjoy and appreciate the album more readily as a WHOLE. P.S. I hope that Beth can please also look into reviewing Bonnie Raiit "I Can't Make You Love Me.'
Try the 1982 tour video, the emotion there is over the top. Sometimes you get the feeling that Lindsey and Stevie are ready to rip each other apart.

If you enjoyed this you should also check out the version of Silver Springs which was recorded during the same live performance for The Dance (it's on Fleetwood Mac's CZcams page) I don't think I've ever heard better harmonising in a live recording and when Lindsey and Stevie are singing to each other every emotion the two has ever felt towards one another is brought to the surface.
The story I heard about the writing of this song is that Stevie and Christine wrote the first half of the song and were having trouble finishing it, and at the same time the boys had written a coda with no song to put it on, and they just smushed them together. It's a similar story to how Free Bird came together...An unfinished song, and a long coda with no song to put it on.
I think it was Christine that told the story sometime in the 1980's.

I think it is very likely she was vastly simplifying the story in an attempt to make it more interesting. I can't remember where I heard it, but it was either an audio or video interview, it wasn't something I read. Maybe RockLine?

Growing up, this album was my REAL intro to Fleetwood Mac. So the live versions of all these songs are the ones I think of as the "real" versions

I know this isn't a guitar channel, but you touched on it, so humor me here... A trap many guitarists fall into is writing these technically complex, virtuosic solos that are mind-numbingly boring to listen to. Learning to write good solos really clicked for me when a colleague basically said (I'm paraphrasing), "not all great solos are hard to play, but all great solos are exciting." For a long time I equated that to these frenetic, wild, roller coaster rides. And that is indeed an exciting type of solo (see Synyster Gates' _Afterlife_ solo as an example of that). It took me a long time to learn that's not the only definition of exciting though. Lindsey's solo in _The Chain_ is my favorite example of that. It's not technically complicated at all. You don't need to break out theory books to understand it. You just need ears and a beating heart. But it's used to such great effect. It's that *MASSIVE* cathartic release of all this pent up engery and emotion the band built up to that point. I've played this song live probably a hundred times, and who knows how many times practicing. I've heard it probably thousands. And yet every single time, that bass line, that buildup and anticipation, and then that release gives me goosebumps. Every. Time. If that's not exciting I have no idea what is. That's why this solo, as simple as it may be, is so iconic.
I think this is an excellent point. It also works for singing, not all great songs are hard to sing but all great songs evoke an emotion!
I saw Fleetwood Mac on this tour on a magical, cloudless summer evening. The sound was perfect and the Mac were perfect. To top it off they opened with my favorite song, "The Chain".
Fascinating commentary, nicely done. The bitter, angry song is a masterpiece. And it transcends cultural boundaries, as in Jose Feliciano's cover from 2020 where he intertwines Flamenco riffs behind the ever-forward pounding beat, totally different from Fleetwood Mac but equally dramatic even though just one voice carries the words.
FM is in my Top 3 favorite bands. This song is in my bloated Top 3 best songs ever. My generation so we relish growing with this group of phenomenal musicians. Highwomen do a great rendition of this incredible song!

As others have mentioned, this is from their reunion concert, which became The Dance DVD and album. Such great performances of so many hits. Definitely check out Silver Spring next. When I first got back into Fleetwood Mac thanks to The Dance performance, I missed the tension in the band. Now I realize even the lyrics of Chain describe the band’s success was bigger than their individual issues. So many other performances describe their love/hate relationships.

The best breakup songs are the ones that were written as a collaboration with the former lover.
The maturity required to sit down and write a song with a former lover about what caused the destruction of the relationship is just amazing.

The Dance is a reference to doing something to please someone else. To live a LIE. But the Band stayed together for their fans. They went on tour and performed (aka) doing the Dance for their audience.
During the writing of this song, Two couples in Fleetwood Mac were breaking up due to rampant drug use, fights, and infidelity. Rumors is one of the best Albums ever written. Mainly because they were writing songs to each other.
