Slipknot, an American heavy metal band hailing from Des Moines, Iowa, has carved a niche for itself in the music industry with its aggressive style and unique sound since its formation in 1995. Known for their attention-grabbing image, the band consists of members wearing distinctive masks and uniforms, adding a theatrical element to their performances. Slipknot's music, characterized by its explosive energy, complex rhythms, and dark, thematic lyrics, has garnered a massive following worldwide. With a discography that spans over two decades, including hits like "Wait and Bleed" and albums such as Iowa and Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses), Slipknot has solidified its position as a pivotal force in the nu-metal and alternative metal genres, achieving significant commercial success and critical acclaim.
"Duality," one of Slipknot's most iconic tracks, released in 2004 as part of their third studio album Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses), stands as a testament to the band's profound impact on the heavy metal landscape. The song showcases Slipknot's signature blend of melodic intensity and raw, emotional depth, making it a fan favourite and a staple in the band's discography. The accompanying music video, filmed in a fan's house set for renovation, captures the chaotic energy and communal spirit that Slipknot's music often evokes, further amplifying the track's appeal. "Duality" not only charted successfully worldwide but also contributed to Slipknot's reputation as innovators in the heavy metal scene, highlighting their ability to connect with audiences through powerful lyrics and compelling visuals.

The not using "foul language" wasn't just for the 1 song Duality. It was for the entire album. He wanted to show they could be dark and heavy without all the "bad language" .. because they were criticized pretty heavily for their 2nd album's use of it.
This is something I didn’t know! That’s bad ass
@@JayR607 From what I remember Corey talking about it, it's that and the fact that he realized he used it as a crutch when writing lyrics, so he might as well try NOT using swears (except for the one use of "bitched" in this song).
and it didnt really work. for me there are just 2 slipknot albums imo.
@@gonzo2495incorrect take, but that’s fine. Slipknot, Iowa, Vol. 3, All Hope Is Gone, and .5: The Gray Chapter are all the best of the band, after that you could probably argue your point
@@dyldog its a matter of taste and thats always subjective. i wont argue about matter of tastes but in this case, they gone too "soft" after iowa imo. i listened strictly to thrash, speed and death metal in the 90s. so i was for the brutality and misanthropy. Duality is pop for the standards which Iowa sets.
12:16 There's no profanity on the entire album. Corey read where some critic said he couldn't write lyrics without profanity, so he did it and this album won a Grammy. So not using profanity ended up being an *even bigger* "fuck you."
The more I listen, the more I consciously love picking out the drums. Every song I love, tends to have drums that have a particular quality.
Slipknot’s drums are a huge, awesome part of their sound. Powerful
Listen to some TOOL
Joey was amazing RIP... Jay did an awesome job filling his shoes....
Joey was a goat. Rip
9:34 "Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask and he will tell you the truth" -Oscar Wilde
beautiful!
This was the first metal song that I heard, so it’s very special for me. This video proves me that you have an incredible level of culture, because you were able to get everything from the clip. Amazing work!!!!
Beth, What an amazing reaction. What has always drawn me to you has been your openness and authenticity. But this reaction has grown beyond. From the technical musical aspects, to the performance, to vocal technique, to production, the music video analysis as well as the broader interpretation of self and how the band does play in a land between authentic emotion and characters. You have grown immensely these last few years. From expressing your voice in your album to these well produced, confident and complete reactions. A real pleasure to watch. Thank you
Thank you!
Extremely well said. I agree completely.
There's a reason why Duality is in so many people's top 5 Slipknot tracks. Loved this reaction. Great analysis!
I have been a content consumer of yours for years now.... I really like how you have made a point to reference some books and people that are impactful in your mind. Also some of the "popup" facts are a solid add. Keep up the great work!!!
Thank you!
Not a huge Slipknot fan but this is one of the greatest metal songs. Rick Rubin is one of the greatest producers ever- the guy is so varied and versatile and has worked with so many greats across so many genres.
Your passion for metal always draws me in for these videos, and i loved the trivia about the fans house! Need that i am i ran to comments to blurry that trivia out and just as i finished typing you dropped the tidbit in the video😂
I love that this video presents a lot more information than just the vocals, I like that you are adding more.
Thank you so much for recommending No Bad Parts. I've been working on reconciling different sides of myself in therapy lately, so your timing is really fortuitous and I think the book could be very helpful.
great reaction beth, can i also say there is literally nothing better than watching you get into a song waving that beautiful hair around.have a nice day
I LOVE your breakdowns! - really adds an extra serving of enjoyment to my fav songs, and your energy is so real too - thank you :)
Love this reaction and your genuine passion for what you do! I have absolutely no musical abilities but love listening to music and I enjoy learning about music and musicians from your content. Cheers from Alaska!
This will always be one of my fav videos, regardless of genre. I don't know of another video that feels so organic and natural. This is exactly what this song needed visually.
A friend of mine bought a car from a kid in this video. Small world event. Proud to be a Des Moines native with these guys. RIP Paul and Joey
Love the technical information in this analysis
Awesome analysis! So excited to see them in May :D
Really appreciate that you talked about the video and its production. Watched the video at least a hundred times and still learned something today. Thanks a lot!
This was the best breakdown of this that I’ve seen. Thank you.
Thank you for talking about the arrangement. If you listen to this enough you start to realize how many layers there are.
Thank you for the insight.
I'm more into prog rock and instrumentals, but for some reason this song of Slipknot's along with Before I Forget have been ones I listen to many times.
If you're drawn to technical complexity they *are* 9 talented performers 🤷🏼♂️
I agree with you. I'm not a huge fan, but there are 3 or 4 songs that have always been on rotation.
I'm not sure what it is about prog rock that draws me in. Just enjoy the sound and vibe to it@@716monk
But I have no doubt that they are talented@@716monk
Apparently the line about pushing your fingers into your eyes to stop the pain is a line he got from how migraine feels and I can definitely relate to that feeling
This is one of my favourite Slipknot song ever 👍
Rick Rubin is also known as one of the guys responsible for the loudness wars where he adds a lot of compression to the songs. It cranks up the volume and ends up smashing the waveform and giving everything a 'compressed' sound.
The most educational analysis video I have seen, Excellent work Beth I and I'm am sure We love you!!
I only put this comment because a few months ago I had a weird dream about pushing my fingers into my eyes and since that lyric (to a band i havent listend to in forever) has been popping into my head daily.
abd the smell of air conditioning.. not sure what tghat smells like but it was in my dream.
What was Amazing was watching you Rock Out!!! 🤫😉😎👏🤘♥️
Fantastic analysis! Thank you for giving SlipKnot it's due... Musical metal. It's hard, but you can follow along!
Seeing such an in depth and well done analisys of this song is so good. I wish someday you could look at Imperial Circus Dead Decadence, you can poke around to find translations to the songs, but the intensity of the vocals and live performances(especially the latest ones) are incredible
Any song would be ok, but Fushoku Resentment Fushi Yoku No Sarugakuza, Uta, and Yomi Yori are the old classics that most people know, but Misogiharae no Kamiumi wa Notamai is also a great song from their new album that carries a lot of variety in the vocals in my opinion
I just love the feeling of empathy, sacrifice and individuality the music, beat rhythm and vocals has in this song.
Joey Jordison, Paul Grey, and Jim Mother f**king ROOT! Slipknot in their prime were incredible and the music of that era will stand the test of time. It was a great time to be alive back then.
Saw them LIVE, AND THEY SOUND THUS GREAT LIVE TOO
As a long time listener and a psychotherapist, I absolutely LOVE how you thought about IFS and it’s application to Slipknot and this concept of duality!
First of all it’s a great song What I like about this video is it reminds me of my very first metal concert,it is chaos and it is beautiful
I love this song and music video, it's incredible
Also to add to the music video part, the band was allegedly told to not allow the crowd to be too rough on the framing of the house resulting in Corey Taylor stopping the performance multiple times to try and get the crowd to calm down a bit however after realizing it was basically impossible they let the crowd practically do what they want which is what resulted in the damage costs being so expensive.
You totally rocked out at the end. Trying to learn music, I know most of do - se but have no ear
One of my favorite of your reactions so far! Love it.
Despite this probably being Slipknot's biggest song, likely due to the lack of profanity, and my favorite mask that Corey's ever worn, I always forget about it when I get to see them in concert. I think that's probably because it was such a big hit, it's almost bigger than the band itself and it's still a pleasant surprise once they start it up.
Don't worry about the eggs thing haha I have that happen to me a lot hahaha
Having covered this song sooo many times you're very much right about it.
I knew a girl once who could sing it flawlessly. Sadly we never collaborated
but it always thrilled me every time she sang anything metal or alternative
cos she had this soft natural voice but when she sang the power and masculinity
in it was overwhelming haha Personally I blew my voice out in my teens cos
I didn't have the right vocal coach. Meaning none at all. And screaming lyrics
killed me hahaha
This song is awesome and makes me happy!
Sorry your hair is as stunning and amazing as slipknot I could even focus on the reaction ❤️
I like this song slipknot duality. I like them this metal band. Rock rules. This was in 2004 🥁🎸🎶🎵🎤
I've always loved this song. It's my dream to be able to sing it one day properly.
I don't know if it's your hair, your eyes, or your accent but you are so pretty
Best metal band. I've returned to them after many years and have just realized this
This song is awesome in so many ways. I love it when Pros analyze metal and give it the credibility it deserves.
This is the song that got me into Slipknot.
I see more Slipknot in your future. They are so badass
Rick Rubin also produced Deloused in the Comatorium. Best album in known history
“The Grudge or valley girls”. Beth, that’s brilliant way to explain it! Loved your reaction!!
How about analyzing something from Stone Sour? Like their hit song "Through Glass"?
Veo un vídeo muy controbertido se me hace el grupo enloquecedor me gustó su propuesta musical bien Beth 👏👏🍀🍀 mi H Prrj ❤
A awesome song I love slipknot the subliminal verse and Iowa
"overdrive" has a distinct tone. Especially within the realm of analogue or valve amplifiers. The reality if that most "metal" actually uses "distortion". Overdrive causes distortion, yes, but there are other ways to achieve pure distortion and decide it's character and tone. Pedals and "mixing" vary things massively.
YESSS!!! THIS SONG MAKES ME WANT TO BREAK STUFF!!!! 👊 🤘
This was my favorite song, still my favorite album, but PSYCHOSOCIAL is my favorite song now
I enjoyed your little sidequest into Rick Rubin. What do you think of Max Martin? He's pretty deeply embedded in the last ~25 years of chart topping pop hits.
the band at their peak….a well structured song…💯
I have to appreciate that this song shows off their drum set having metal kegs in it that they play by beating it with a baseball bat.
Please check out "before I forget" It really shows off Corey's vocal range. Great tune
Good reaction video! I'm a fan! One little suggestion, as an avid viewer, let the CLIMAX happen....wait to explain everything leading up to, during, and after. Just don't interrupt, even if you know it's coming. Let your viewers experience it before you tell them about what they're about to experience. Just my two cents. You're doing amazing! Keep it up! 🙂
Eric Carmen died. I've been waiting to see someone like you react to his voice, particularly the stuff he did with the Raspberries, there are some good live videos out there, (Let's Pretend is my favorite) the dude could wail.
i just searched for beth roars duality yesterday 😮
Woot! Fate allowed!
hi beth do a live version of one of slipknot songs ressurection fest 2023 pshycoscial or purity i would love to know what he is doing with his voice best singer in the world the things that man can do with it
If you want to see Corey Taylor's vocal range , watch Dave Grohl's "Sound City" 19:47 version , featuring Corey Taylor Rick Nelson (Cheap Trick) and Dave Grohl , Corey puts his heart into it.
Please look into WASP. Hold on to my Heart. Crimson idol album classic story album.
Another fav is hevens hung in black. Would really love to see some reactions to WASP
If ya wanna be blown away by Corey Taylor’s vocal range heres 2 veryyyyy diff tracks
His cover or Chris Isaaks “wicked Game” w/stonesour
“From can to can’t” Sound city with Dave Grohl on drums😎
Would love to see ya do both!!!
Watch "Zero a Herói", from 5 brazilian voice actresses that song for Disney 's Hércules and joined together on Covid19 pandemia to sing together again. It is different from other things on your channel but would be cool to see
Gotta react to Tool song Pushit audio from the Salival live album version Maynard in a different vocal style
F🤘🏻ck yes!!
1:40
I wonder if those guys really know about that and make it on purpose or they just do it naturally, by feeling....
Incredible
"It's the only thing that slowly stops the eeeeeegg!!!"- Corey Taylor
Maybe you would review some of Lost Horizon songs someday? Or any other featuring Daniel Heiman? He's top of the top among metal vocalist.
I have always thought when he sings my eyes it more like my begins eyes. I push my fingers into myeyes. The y starts the I sound.
you should listen to slipknot gently
Please reaction slipknot live concert
Hey Beth.. anytime someone does a Slipknot reaction I have to mention Mushroomhead... They are overlooked and underrated... Overall I think they have more songs I like better.. they are known for using many vocalists not just one .. if you check them out I suggest...
Solitaire Unraveling...
Sun Doesn't Rise...
We are the Truth...
Simple Survival...
Crazy...
Would love to see what u think about Death Metal . All the screaming and growling and cookie monster voice
Came here to see the reaction and left with a music lesson. 10/10 would do it again lol
I just have one question, would drummer Eloy Casagrande be the first foreigner in the band Slipknot?
Hi Beth, it seems like you've never analyzed and reacted to Guns N Roses live in Tokyo in 1992. Would you mind analyzing and reacting to one of their videos, like "You Could Be Mine"? I would be grateful if you did!
Next Slipknot - vermilion part 1
The Maggots actually trashed the house A LOT more than the owners anticipated, so, Slipknot had to cover the cost of repairs to the parts of the house that the owners weren't intending to renovate.
would love to see a vocal reaction to zach bryan
Gotta do Disasterpiece
This song slaps. Hard. Still.
The good times when Slipknot was a band of brothers, not the rotating door of today.
"I put my fingers into my eyes!!!" and you want to talk about eggs
My brother was there that day but he didn't make the video.
"The grudge or valley girls." +Britney Spears, perhaps?
Now Psychostick has to do a parody cover about rice and eggs.
Corey Taylor is and will forever be one of the most dynamic voices in metal.
its time for you to find Tori Holub, the talk of you tube
Style-dump kid of the 60's forward....do like the cleverness of Slipknot...do like the crazy, sculpted, angry without depression vids climaxing to the point at the end...and hey...who doesn't like climaxes? 😊
This video was made live and they actually destroyed that house that they rented because they leaked that they were doing a live show and more people showed up than predicted
In the social media world, the masks make them more authentic, because we can at least hope that their expression isn't as tainted by the camera effect as it would be if we knew who they were.
it's kinda wild how that has inverted over the decades.
If you want to hear more “Eggs”, you should check out “In Waves” by Trivium. People screw an “Egg Whites”…lol.
