Use Traxxas LED light kit on other ESCs

- Here's another video of how to bypass the amplifier on the Traxxas LED light kit if you wish to use the lights from the kit. Perhaps you've switched out your VXL-4S to something aftermarket such as the Max 8 or the Castle MMX. Again, you'll be bypassing (not using) the light kit amplifier, so the lights can only remain on when the battery is connected.
The first half of the video shows the output of the amplifier - to avoid any doubt of the output (I deleted the previous video due to negative comments that said I was photoshopping the picture since it wasn't an actual video).
The second half shows me connecting the front LED light to a 3s LiPo battery and a 4s LiPo battery. Working voltage of these lights are from 10.5V to about 17V. That means your 3s will work until you reach about 3.5V/cell (considered a discharged LiPo battery). - Věda a technologie
I was wondering if I could use the Traxxas lights with another brand esc. Thank you for this video. Great job. Don’t worry about the negative comments. Your children are cute copying what you say.
The easiest way is to connect them to a balance lead to use on the LiPo.
@@dgitalchaos I’m using Traxxas battery so it doesn’t have the balance wire external. It’s built into the Traxxas plug. Any idea how to wire them to that ? Thank you
@@johnnydavis8489 you can use a Traxxas Power Tap and wire that to the LEDs. www.amainhobbies.com/traxxas-power-tap-connector-w-cable-tra6541x/p1296696?gclid=CjwKCAiAkfucBhBBEiwAFjbkr4d07r98kCQxMQSR1VO1cR-toNfY3CCa0ggNKoR57Hy_gxNhRHUzHhoCA-QQAvD_BwE
@@dgitalchaos thank you that’s exactly what I would need. Have a great weekend and merry Christmas
@@johnnydavis8489 have a Merry Christmas as well!
Great job. This helps
Great research and video, thanks! :)
Hope it helped a bit!
Thanks for the intel! This technique should work on an 8s xmaxx with one 4s obviously?
Correct, that’s if you don’t want to use the LED amplifier.
@@dgitalchaos I was under the impression this was using the traxxas light amp? So is this a direct wire method to the lightbar?
@@gmummy direct lights, no amp. To use the amplifier, see this video:

@@dgitalchaos Excellent. Thank you! Subbed up👍
Is this amplifier the one with the 8 pin plug ? I have the sledge kit and been trying to get it to work with my max 8 esc or get power to the leds
Correct, it’s the Traxxas 6590 amplifier that connects to the VXL-4S on the Maxx, VXL-6S on the E-Revo and Sledge, and the VXL-8S on the XMAXX and XRT.
Did u ever get this to work in your sledge?
So can we essentially use the cheaper kit TRA6589 Instead of paying the $100 they want for the XRT or xmaxx TRA7885? It’s not much more power and they are super small LEDs. Am I wrong? Thanks.
No, the 6589 uses a 3.3 volt system from the 8028 (which takes one 2S or 3S to power). You’d burn out the lights and module immediately if you connected them to more than 3.3V.
Can you power the module at self and leave the wires plugged into it and power the lights that way I'm trying to run it off a Max 6 ESC in my Sledge
I’m not sure. I know Traxxas doesn’t release schematics to any of their devices.
@@dgitalchaos you can do it I just left a comment explaining how you use the red and the green there's 2 red and 2 green that are positive you can use all four or just one red and one green and then there's two grounds you can use both blacks or just one black I used one green one red and one black and now I can cycle through the lights with the button on the module
@@martinbullla7654 that’s awesome! How’d you get the info? Trial and error?
@@dgitalchaos no I just kept looking it up and scrolling through a whole bunch of different threads about it and I finally found someone that said the red and the green are positive and the blacks are the grounds you can use any red or any green for battery positive I tried it and it worked so now I'm just spreading the info
@@martinbullla7654 that’s awesome!!!! Thank you!
Could I power a light kit off a second lipo specifically for the light kit
Looking at small 1 cell lipos with a jst connector to power my Trx4 light kit, that way I don’t have to solder in a jst connector into my hobby wing fusion
@@jonathanboyer8723 I believe the TRX-4 uses a 3 volt system, so you’ll fry the LEDs if you connect a LiPo.
@@dgitalchaos I’m gonna give it a shot, for science of course, also the lipo is only 3.7 volts so and the thing I’m plugging it into should regulate voltage, it might be fine even running the full voltage but we shall see
How did you wire the amplifier to the aftermarket esc?
I added a balance plug to the wires and connected them directly to a lipo.
@@dgitalchaos so you're not able to control them with the maxx link app after doing it that way, are you?
@@pinky057 no control like that. The feature only works with the VXL-6S, VXL-8S, and VXL-4S speed controller.
Hello! Can I do this with a 6s pack??
Great show G
So if we also wire in the reverse light leads to the front and rears now they’ll be on once lipo hooked up permanently Sooo😊 when will the reverse light come on/ kick in as we’ve no longer fit the stock esc inside 😎
Would dig an answer
Unfortunately, you either wire the reverse light to stay on, or keep it off. Thanks to Traxxas for proprietary modules.
@@dgitalchaos I thought so😕 Wizardry outside the box thinking can only go so far with TRAXXAS in the mix
Thank you so much for the show
I’m setting to look about doing this exact mod as I wanted to but never knew how 🤩🥳🤩🥳🥸
@@gonzodetroitify it’s simple enough to solder to a balance plug and then connect to a lipo. They draw very low amperage.
@@dgitalchaos ahh Blast 😞 yes that’s what I was about to look for the opposite end to the lipo balance and go to work 🫡
Your ontop of your game that’s for sure
Don’t watch the negative comments
It was a please to hear what sounded like your child’s 🥇 bumper comment 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Awesome moment 🔥😏
@@gonzodetroitify the twins love to play with the RCs. So it’s nice teaching them the components.
