I love empire and Old World has been brutal to me. It feels like an uphill battle every time. Knocking the state troops down 30% might work but honestly I'd like my supporting characters (warrior priests, witch hunters, Generals) to have really impactful buffs.
My guess for the Banner of Duty is it's intended for Pistoliers or Outriders that might prefer to Fire and Flee rather than take a charge head on. Admittedly, that would require a) Placing your BSB in a skirmish cav unit and b) wasting the magic banner on a 10pt banner.
Also, Witch Hunters should definitely be picking their specialism when Wizards generate their spells, to represent them studying up and preparing for their foe ahead of time.
Just started my empire army. I’m balancing reading rules with hobby so I can quickly get ready to play. Based on this for my state troops I’m thinking I want a large brick of thrusting spears with a halbeird detachment accompanying them for my 1000k point list in my state troop choice.
Don't discount another small detachment of State missile troops - their stand and shoot reaction has a decent chance of plinking a wound or two off a charging enemy and those wounds count for combat resolution, which your spears might struggle to get on their own.
The empire is very hard to pilot, but they can be good. You really need to coordinate your units
Another great guide! Thankyou!
Thanks for a comprehensive introduction to the Empire Army. Im feeling inspired!
Awesome to hear mate: more empire players/hype is a great thing!
Thanks! Very informative.
Does anyone know if you can use the bonus to cast from the wizard’s staff with the ruby ring of ruin?
Great video - love the in-depth breakdown.
Afraid that even with a unit in front of your cannon on a hill your cannon can be seen as stated in the rule book page271 “Therefore, any unit that is not on a hill can draw a line of sight to a unit that is entirely on a hill across or through other units or models.”
Sick Content bro. Veteran is huge in the current tournament (monster) meta imo. Try out a Lore familiar + Daemonology level 4 in the Veteran spears 10 wide 🤑, fly 24 then go ham! Look forward to seeing some Empire bat reps 👊
Thanks mate! I shall try that tonight cos im actually filming a game on Warhol with empire tonight (just doing a one off Warhol game so show capability)
you can march with fly?
Great guide. Seems like the Warrior Priest of Ulric's prayers are under-powered a bit, Battle Howl should swap out the +D3" charge distance for granting Furious Charge or Frenzy. As well as the leadership for all Warrior Priests seems low and the Arch Lectors ought to get 2 prayer casts. Shame - Missed opportunity!
I think there's a combo in taking both Warrior Priest Variants and putting them in a block of Halberdiers! Two of the minor priest cost almost as much as 1 major, and you get two prayer attempts a turn!
I think if you work in some detachment shenanigans, you can make this 'combo' pretty powerful. Does a unit of say 40-50 Statetroops with spears, and then a Drilled Veteran State Troop Detachment with Haldberdiers on the side. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can use the Warrior priests prayers on a unit within 8inches right? So you can deploy them one unit, and still target the other right?
This combo should give you a really fighty front line that should be able to stand it's ground through winning combat res. I suspect it won't have high damage output by itself though. Could swap out the Regimental unit for a large unit of Greatswords if you want to upgrade this combo.
It seems like to me Greatswords needs some sort of combination of +1Ws, S, T, A, and or Ld. I think it's a real shame that The Empire doesn't have access to WS5 in an reasonable degree. I feel like they needs +1Ws at a minimum, but either +1A as well, or +1S, and T. They need to be able to win a combat on their own, with no help. In order to properly fulfil their power fantasy.
Ye agreed there, +1WS all the time and maybe even similar to the Dwarf rule of +1A when charged to be the reverse of KOTR on foot and play into the detachment rule?
Prayers within command range aswell ye, so 7" for a normal priest (depending on the prayer aswell) so can deffo benefit a detachment as necessary
@@BearfootMiniatures Thanks for the reply!!
Love you content as always!!
Free company + griffon banner makes no sense at all because the unit cannot take a regular standard and is open order. So a state troop unit with 2 ranks x2 + a banner and close order = 6 which is the exact same as a free company with 3 ranks x 2 = 6 CR
I think the best thing the empire can do is spam naked characters. Captains, warrior priests, etc are so cheap just buy 3 where other armies buy 1 character
Is there an army guide planned for the High Elves? thank you
There certainly coming up, probably sooner than later, I’ve just recorded/editted an orcs one (and have to do the arcane journal) but will likely get time this weekend to record and soon after edit/put on the pre release the High elf one
It’s kinda based on player availability and/or my own number of times having played them and study of the army book to be able to put out a video worth watching
@@BearfootMiniatures Thank you. Look forward to it.
I think the Empire have the tools to compete (unlike Dwarfs, who need a complete redesign/miracle/really good Arcane Journal), but some of their point costs need to be brought down a smidge.
I'm not so sure dwarfs are that bad off tbh
@@Iron_Wyvern - Might be right, but what kind of dwarf would we be if we weren't grumbling about something, lol.
I think all are competitive Richy who was in a vid about 5 weeks ago on the channel has been doing reasonably well with dwarfs even, I think the major differences are amount of options while still having a competitive list tourne wise (Vs other armies which have more options/variations of list that can be run and do well)
Standard (non optimised) game wise I think the differences get much smaller
@@BearfootMiniatures - Could be. Looking forward to see how the Arcane Journal shakes things up.
Your videos are very quiet, can you try turning up the volume of your microphone?
I really appreciate your efforts to support the Empire. But unfortunately, as has been discussed the length and the width over on warhammer-empire forum, with very few exceptions, empire units and characters are way to expensive for what they do. Especially in comparison to their bretonnian brethren. Want to play empire as it should be ? Look for Bretonnian arme and give the units and characters german names. Bretonnian M@A are what Statestroops should be, only for much less points. Their special rules(Horde,Shieldwall) and their standard equipment ( polearms, usable in two ways) elevate them way above the best statestroops empire has to offer. It's a shame that the so call best human soldery is dwarfed by peasants @arms...😢
Armor of Tarnus is quite nice for a wizard on a barded warhorse. 4+/5+ and being in a unit where the champion can take a challenge for you isn't a bad deal at all. Granted, it does limit mobility a little compared to light cav or a flying mount, but it's at least worth a consideration.
It cant have a barded warhorse 🤷
@@punchyMiddleEarth Ack, that is an awkward mistake. Shows me with my mind still in ancient editions, even if I try and catch up a little. :)
sadly ye what punchy said, and the warhorse no longer gives +1 so its a 6+/5++ so only really (IMO) worth it for getting a third 5++ into the list somehow
@@BearfootMiniatures And you'll be paying a premium for it, if that is the only reason. I agree that there's likely better ways to spend your points.
Looking rough bro, you ok?
I was starting to come down with something after running the melos event/making 15 tables worth of terrain, seem to have recovered now though!
:D
