  • You don't generally think about Brazil when talking about World War Two. Still, they joined the Allied powers in 1942, after which the Brazilian Expeditionary Force played a role in the Invasion of Italy. The Sabaton song Smoking Snakes is about the Brazilian effort during World War Two and especially about three Brazilian soldiers who wouldn't surrender.

This may be the most requested Sabaton Song for us to cover in on the Sabaton History Channel. We have had hundreds, if not thousands people asking already from episode 001. Well, here it is! We listened to the feedback that some of you gave us, and included some more details about the song and the stories behind it in the interview part. We really hope you like the result!
    Cheers! 🤘

The pastor was talking about the virtues of biblical masculinity, which are: compromise and sacrifice. He said that in war these are the virtues that soldiers exercise. Therefore, men who want to exercise masculinity correctly according to the Bible must behave like soldiers: willing to sacrifice their own lives to protect others. As Jesus himself did!
In that video description he left 2 songs that told the story of men who exercised these virtues as men of God. He introduced about the soldiers of the D-Day in Normandy and about the Brazilian heroes of Monte Castello. The two links led to the songs "Primo Victoria" and "Smoking Snakes"!

As a revenge for the stole of our cachaça (alcoholic drink) some brazilians sneaked into the american camp and in the middle of the night they stole a tank.
As Getúlio was an dictator the disbanded the FEB when they still were in Italy because he feared that their victory over dictators would destroy his image or even start a revolution.

I have one correction about the history portion of this video: the expression "quando uma cobra fuma" ("when a snake smokes [tobacco]") in Brazilian Portuguese, as an equivalent to "when pigs fly", predates even the Vargas Administration, which used it to refer to how unlikely it was for Brazil to ever enter WWII because nobody in Brazil had any interest in getting involved with that hot mess. When that changed with the German U-boat attacks on Brazilian merchant ships the smoking snake was promptly adopted as the FEB's insignia because if there is one thing all Brazilians have in ample supply is a sense of humor. The expression also ended up changing from describing an impossibility to describing a certainty.
On a funny side note: there is another expression in Brazilian Portuguese for something unlikely, "nem que a vaca tosse" ("not even if the cow coughs"), that had it been used instead by the Vargas administration to describe their desire to remain neutral during the war this song would instead have been called "Coughing Cows".

My Grand-Father once told me a Story about my Great-Grand-Father. During World War II he was an Luxembourgish Tramcar Driver in Luxembourg. He was driving from Esch-sur-Alzette to Belgium, Arlon. One night there were 3 Bloodied people who couldnt speek German, Luxembourgish or Frensh entering his Tramcar at night. He immediately told them to stay close to his cabin with his hands, since he thought they must be foreign soldiers. They complied an he drove of. On the Border to Belgium the SS controled every vehicle who passed so my Great-Grand-Father waited till they borded the Tramcar. After they boarded he manipulated the Tramcar to cause an electrical discharge to cause the electricity to fail and the lights to go out on the whole station and showed the 3 soldiers a way out and just whisperd to them "run". Aperently they were able to return to an allied army whitout beieng captured, and my grandfather said that he thinks that they were shot down pilots.

I'm a Brazilian fan of Nightwish, Floor Jansen is a Talent Tsunami. And she's married to the drummer from Sabaton, and he's the luckiest man in the world. He is just the father of the “child of light”. That said, I feel honored that you guys made a song about our BEF.
I served our Army in 1987, we treat our veterans who fought in Italy with the utmost respect.
The history that we were told by those veterans is the US Army always thought that Brazilian soldiers were crazy, due to their courage to fight the enemy even when the odds were against them. Thank you for the song, your lyric is beautiful.

And say what you will from us, but this people is quite warm, and you guys will always feel the warmth of the people who love you.
There are many cool stories about the FEB. A platoon made entirely of Indians managed to run over a fortified German position who ran and even left their flag. The captured nazi flag is proudly shown on a museum in Rio. You won't hear about further actions because once the Gothic Belt was down and Germany was opened trough the alps, the Americans went and the FEB stayed to keep the peace and order in Northern Italy where to this day they are called "Liberatori", liberators.
