- While the British were already dying by the thousands in the trenches in Western Europe, their high command decided to try to break the stalemate with an attack on the Ottoman Empire in the Dardanelles. This is the first episode on the Sabaton song Cliffs of Gallipoli about the Allied landings on the shores off Gallipoli.

Thats right, Cliffs of Gallipoli will be featured in not one but two Sabaton History episodes! The next episode will dive into a different but equally perspective of the battle.
Joakim already mentions it in the call to action of this episode, but we're making Sabaton History Special Editions of all the older Sabaton Albums, just like we did with The Great War. Those who support us at a certain level on Patreon before the end of November, will be rewarded with the Sabaton History Edition of the Sabaton Album 'Heroes'. Check out our Patreon page to find out more! -> www.patreon.com/sabatonhistory
Cheers!
Sabaton History a man who married into my family died at Gallipoli and I am sorta glad he fell to an Ottoman gun because he was a wife beater
History edition great... however... please... please.... don't replace the awesome art cover for a plank of wood. I was extremely disappointed when I bough the great war expected the best art cover yet and got.... a plank of wood....

I'm going to call this ww1 d-day
"Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives ... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours ... You, the mothers who sent their sons from faraway countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well." - Mustafa Kemal Atatürk
Gretings from Turkey, friends. Awesome song as always.
Thanks!

When Indy talked about this battle from week to week in Great War, that really showed how long it actually was. I can't even imagine the suffering of those men there.
About the song...I'm mezmerized, smitten and totally hooked on that guitar solo. So, I'm happy it ended up on the album. 🙂
The soldiers who couldn't believe they were actually getting evacuated kind of shows it. They had already accepted that Gallipoli would be their grave and had come to peace that they would die and many of them did. Many of them so young they couldn't even drink alcohol in America
@@cvetomirgeorgiev9106 There are reports from witnesses who said the evacuation was like being born a second time. They had written off themselves and now they were given a second chance at life.
"I don't order you to attack - I order you to die".
There is something with commanders and epic quotes.
I shivered after hearing this.
If I don't see Shores of Gallipoli in the next two months, I'll be contacting my lawyer that I don't have.
7 months have passed
And so... what Joakim is saying.... is that we can get Cliffs of Gallipoli and Bismark part two and three?
Marek Kuzel it would seem that if we ask, we might... let’s hope we can!
Theoretically
@@SabatonHistory That would be so sick! Anyway, thanks for making these history videos. Keep up the good work!
They could even be stand alone songs, like Bismark. It would be really cool, especially since the stories of all of Sabaton's songs have so much more content than what can possibly be covered in about 5 minutes
It always amazes me when you hear these stories of an officer giving orders like "I'm not ordering you to fight, I'm ordering you to die" and none of these soldiers murders their CO, and so few flee that it's not even mentioned.
Turks are militarist nation. It was hard times that caused many brave men to shine. When you hear a commander, commanding its troops in the line on fire, going first and orders his men with such a inspirational way, you have no excuse to run away from defending your motherland.
I am so proud of my ancestors who defended their homeland. They pay the price with their lives. What a great deal.
Learning history from a teacher: zzzzzz
Learning history from Sabaton: enthralled
I do have to say that "The Great War" would have been a great double album with all the possible content from the war.
There is no song for any country from Central Powers except The Red Baron
@@M1koto0 Yes, me and many bulgarian fans was holping for a song about Doiran. Maybe in the next part :).
Well, I guess you got that wish. Another WW1 album is coming up!

Out of all the songs that Sabaton have sung, this on hits home the hardest. As there is a strong family connection with Gallipoli, because my mother's uncle was an original ANZAC since he was at the landing, got wounded, patched up, sent back and was then involved in the evacuation of the Australian forces from there. He was later sent to the Somme where he got killed. He was one of the "lucky" ones though, as his grave is marked. It is definitely on my bucket list to visit his grave and pay my respects from one militiary veteran to another. Thank you Sabaton, Indy and all the Sabaton History crew
Thanks for sharing this, and hopefully you can cross that off your bucket list.
"At the shoreline, blood of heroes stains the land." That always chokes me up. This song is one of my favorites due to the pure emotions shown.
I'd listen to those 2-3 songs worth of extra writing for both Cliffs of Gallipoli and Bismarck.
Yeah. That sounds really interesting
Sooooo can we please have the HD version of the music video for CZcams?
Oh yes, please!
Holy Manperor of Mankind, we meet again!
There is one i found after ages of searching, the title is precisely Sabaton - Cliffs Of Gallipoli + Lyrics
Imagine having an emperor that can’t move
We here only manage the Sabaton History CZcams channel, so for that you'd have to reach out to an official Sabaton channel/email
I did some research on this at school and I read that the ANZACS were inserted in the wrong place, they were supposed to land about 1-3 miles further south, with one Royal Navy commander (Charles Dix) yelling 'Tell the colonel the damned fools have landed a mile north too far'
Whether that's true or not, I'm not sure, that's just what I read when I was researching it at school (like 15-16 years ago)
Chris Langmann
Pretty sure it is true... the bloody poms (Brits) put our forces (ANZAC) on the wrong beach, which was which was pretty much the beginning of the end. The whole campaign was a failure from the start and by the end, a complete waste of life, supplies, and time. The ANZACs were kept there pretty much as cannon fodder by British command... and should have retreated much earlier. But the stubborn poms kept the ANZACs there as thousands of men died completely in vain.
Yea they landed at the wrong beach which was heavily fortified and they were ordered by the British to run head first into machine guns hence "They knew they would die"
You can not travel through any small town in NZ with seeing a memorial. In a lot of cases multiple members of a family are listed.
Write articles about the upcoming landing in the newspapers.
Expect to take the enemy by surprise

I only found out recently that a relative of mine was killed in action at Gallipoli, on the British side.
RIP to all those lads who laid down their lives there.
A great song with a sad story
Quite possibly my absolute favorite Sabaton song (I have many that I really love, depending on the situation, but this one and Lifetime of war are almost always somewhere in the top ranks)

Im already happy that you guys covered Gallipoli
If you do wish to cover it again I highly suggest looking into "Simpson and his Donkey". Truly one of the more famous stories out of Gallipoli.

Here in Australia we have a wall for our men that died there. It's longer than my life expectancy also after gallipoli the Australian brass said never again shall our forces be under British command
Those poor buggers, they were doomed by those over their heads before they even had a chance.
ikr?
Whenever Cliffs Of Gallipoli comes up in my shuffle I always shed at least 1 tear.😭 The song is so emotional.
Kia ora from New Zealand. This is the ONE song I've been waiting to be covered on this channel, and its going to have TWO parts! Thank you so much for doing this. On ANZAC day (25 April, though its sometimes observed on 27 April), we have the "Dawn Parade" and get reminded of what happened there. It is regarded as one of, if not the biggest military defeats New Zealand has ever suffered.
We will remember them.
And emu birds😅 😄
@@fasist1913 please delete this and learn the difference between NZ and Australia
One of the most famous anti-war songs ever was written about this...Eric Bogle's "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda". czcams.com/video/PFCekeoSTwg/video.html. Also, there were quite a few Irish in the British Army who also died at Gallipoli, who's time might have been better spent at home given the events of the following year :). Perhaps the greatest Irish Rebel Song ever, The Foggy Dew, references it: "It was was better to die 'neath an Irish sky than at Suvla or Sud el Bar".
Now I'm looking forward to The Great War Pt. 2: The '90s R&B album! 🤘😁🍺
Its nice to see Indy talking about WW1 again.
I have been waiting so long for this, it's so nice to have a sabaton song be partially about New Zealand troops.
I love how the drums lined up with the ships’ cannons firing. I always imagined the drum to represent the explosions of shells during the campaign.
This song is my favorite from the Art of War album. I've been fascinated by the Gallipoli campaign since I saw Peter Weirs' epic film, the miniseries ANZACS, and the recent Gallipoli miniseries and all the documentaries about the campaign. Thanks Joakim, Indy.
I'm so happy you guys are doing a Sabaton history episode on Gallipoli. And a 2-parter! I'm so happy!
I'm the only one in my family who likes metal, and I've tried to get my family into Sabaton, and they like the history part of it - but their first questions they asked me was if there were songs or Sabaton History episode about Gallipoli - THE main thing most Australians are taught or even think about when someone mentions the world wars, along with the Kokoda trail, Simpson and his donkey, and the Unknown soldier.
I now will have not 1, but 2 videos to show them, and maybe they'll understand why I love Sabaton's music and history channel so much.
Thank you.
The Newfoundland Regiment was there as well! Some great stories of heroism, as is normal for the regiment during the war.
Cheers from Newfoundland guys!
Even when fighting in different sides, both Turkish and British people showed honour and sacrifice among the living and the dead. They are brothers in afterlife now. Long live their names, long live their words, their dreams and their families.
Yes they were like close friends
So, ”Cliffs of Gallipoli” is the song that took the longest time to write? Interesting. Also, can’t wait for ”Shores of Gallipoli” 😂
Gallipoli was the First time we ANZACs Faught under our own Flag. Unlike every other time fighting under the British.
And the true solidifying force for the development of our national identities

Other than that individual Australians fought as members of the British Armies. I can't find the source but read somewhere some Australian born fought in the Crimean War.
Amazing video as always
Thanks guys from Aus.
Love to the Johnny Turks.

Thanks bro respect from Canakkale, Gallipoli, Turkey. And Thanks Sabaton for video and song :)
Everytime I hear cliff of Gallipoli playing (hell, or even some part of it in this video) I felt a goosebump in my back, dam good song.
Im glad youre already well Joakim
General Birdwood was highly regarded by the Aussies. He was telling a story to other (British) officers when he was in the trenches. An Aussie said to him "Birdy get your fucking head down!"
The officers then asked him what he did, expecting him to say that he got up the soldier.
"I got my fucking head down!"
Cliffs of Gallipoli is one of my favourite songs, and you make two episodes about it?
And let Joakim write more guitar solo! This one is AMAZING! I could listen it for hours!
It's perfect, the beats that grow and grow each time, and the falling notes after that... the only defect is that it ends.
I just had the pleasure of listening to this song for the first time. It gave me goosebumps. WW1 history and power metal - two of my favorite things in one video. Thanks, Indy and Sabaton! Can't wait for part 2.
You're welcome! It'll be great!
Just observing that the "Great War 2" album track list does not include Shores of Gallipoli. Not only did Indy tease the release of the new album expertly but I can only assume that has been pushed back to be on "Great War 3" in 2024!
Joachim is a great host, he knows exactly the right questions to ask his guest!
"Your 90s R&B Album coming in 2020" Is that when we'll finally get a cover of Beat It you scrumptious metal machines?
One of my top three favourite Sabatons songs
I've been looking forward to this video for ages. Fantastic work

Great video, looking forward to part 2. Gallipoli is probably my favorite Sabaton song; the way you got the words from the memorial in the lyrics is extremely powerful.
My favourite Sabaton song! Thanks for covering this.

The intro to this song reminds me so much of "Gutter Ballet" by Savatage. I love it. One of my favorite Sabaton songs.
This is still one of my favourites. I have no words for it.

Part 1!? A surprise but a damn welcome
I was surpirised when he said about a Great War part 2 I was so excited
This was one of the first songs I heard by Sabaton back in 2009, still one of my favorites
My GCSE History teacher's Grandfather fought at Gallipoli. He was shot (in the head I think) almost instantly but survived laying face down in the sand. He was found when a soldier turned him over to find him alive. If that didn't happen he would have died there. Its something that really hits home about the scale of the War.

The first song i heard from Sabaton. Such memories
There was a Irish regiment there aswell called the Munster Fusiliers
The Royal Dublin Fusiliers were there too, on the first day they were so badly damaged by the fighting that they were amalgamated into the Royal Dubsters.
The Irish were also the first out onto their beach. No one remembers our boys out there.
Nice to see Indy talking about Gallipoli again 😉
A great video.
There were also Newfoundlanders ( not part of the Canadian dominion yet) at Gallipoli.
One of my top favourite Sabaton songs
Gallipoli is the saddest songs I've come across while listening to Sabaton, everytime I sing along to it I can't help but shed a tear.
Wow, two parter? That's new! Great job, as allways

Just the other day me and my brother were talking about Gallipoli. Didn't really know much about it. Glad for this lesson you mind readers :P
