- As a ghost he roamed the trenches, effectively taking out his enemies one by one. He was the deadliest sniper of The Great War, with over 300 confirmed kills on his name. He is Canadian soldier Francis Pegahmagabow, born in an indigenous First Nations family, and the The Sabaton Song ‘A Ghost in the Trenches’ is about his life and adventures.

Many of you have been analysing the tracklist for the upcoming Sabaton Album ‘the Great War’. While the subjects of some of the songs are quite easy to guess, the exact topic of ‘A Ghost in the Trenches’ is was a mystery for many - although some did predict it correctly. The song is about the Canadian (and indiginous First Nations) soldier Francis Pegahmagabow, the deadliest sniper of the First World War. Indy - having researched and hosted the ‘The Great War’ CZcams channel for the duration of the war, knows as much as there is to know about the subject, and is the most suitable person to tell you the story behind the song.
Enjoy and Cheers!

Yeah, with regards to history at least at my school wasn't really sufficient. A lot of it was more of political, geography and fixing modern day problems. I feel most history has been underappreciated in school and that saddens me.

Indi your quotes at 8:00 remind me of my great grandfather. He fought at Ypres. On his death bed in 1985 age 96 he cried remembering the horses trapped in the mud that they had to leave to drown.
After everything he had done in his life, this was the memory that haunted him and was most vivid.
A true hero, to survive all that. He was a good man. Sorry for your loss
Your great grandfather sounds like a very kind and empathetic man.
Totally understandable. If even from the standpoint that as men they chose to serve while the animals didn't. I'm glad though to hear that the animals who work in areas of conflict are now regarded in a greater way.
RIP to him and to the horses too. :c

So I work in public history as an Indigenous historical interpreter in western Canada. After today I was feeling exhausted and depressed and frustrated with the narrative erasure of our histories. So to see this video was really empowering and turned my day around. Thank you for telling this story in this song, and for putting this video out today. It really brightened my day.
How are you doing?
I'm born and raised in western Canada, you couldn't be more right about erasing our history. My early 2021 resolution is to learn and share as much as I can with other Canadians about our fucking phenomenal history. Pretty much treason to see our Canadian history erased by the cunts in politics today. Good luck with your work, wish you all the best

I think that’s the oldest way to tell stories in any culture. It’s always music, singing, dancing or just telling the story.

Education systems sucks :))
That s it
Bexora Walcer when I was In high school in BC we had a few days going over him in history class. Was fascinating.
@@attilakatona-bugner1140 Sadly, while being one of the country with the most educate people, we don't learn the right thing concerning history.
I know when I was in grade school in the 90's through to early 2000's, military history was barely even touched. We did about 1 day on WW1 and maybe 2 days on WW2. I remember asking my history teachers why we weren't going to depth on Canada's involvement in both World Wars. One of my teachers took me aside after class and told me...and I quote "The ministry and the school district feel that talking about the world wars in any detail glorifies war and violence. They have been instructed us to only briefly bring them up, and to not going into great detail". I was shocked! I actually wrote into the school district complaining that these topics should be covered! I received a reply, when the school counselor called me into the office to see why I was so interested in war and violence and if I was feeling okay.......Again I was shocked. Got to love the good old Canadian education system :(

My great uncle Frances was always there for his people, his family and had a strength and smile that always uplift and kept us moving forward even with all the racism and such. He taught us to be better and strive in life.
In our language Frances was an "Ogichada" (in simple translation it means Big hearted one/Warrior.)
Mime was a sniper in ww2 was a pow in west germany for 3 years he saw it all in the camps and like a ghost he crept put the front gates when the germans got to comfy ;) brang back the boys and some freedom :)
Part of what I love about Sabaton is that they will write lyrics about people that were incredibly brave but haven't been commemorated or remembered the way they deserve. This is an example-- I've never heard about Francis (unlike D-Day where I've been bombarded with info about it in school and media), and indigenous people's stories tend to be neglected in popular culture, so I appreciate Sabaton History's choice to tell his story today.

In a time when Canada's PM claims to want to educate Canada on the First Nations, it tales a SWEDISH power metal band, signed by a GERMAN label, to teach me about the most awesome Natives in Canadian history. The man almost received a DCM, was one of the first Canadian soldiers to receive the Military Medal (of which he was awarded multiple), and actively tries to get back on the frontlines of war after an injury.
My goodness!
I was thinking about Primo Victoria with the 75th anniversary of D-Day but as a sniper in video games, this is interesting to hear how this tactic came and how it worked from years before and how it worked in the later years. I only hope that a song about the other sniper of your repertoire will also get a video very soon. But this is good stuff. And I'm more willing to listen about this tale.
And learning about this individual is making this something else. What I hear from the song, sounds awesome.

It makes me so happy to see a song about a Canadian soldier because I am Canadian and we did some amazing stuff in both wars! Also, I am glad to see you shedding light on our Native heroes in WWI. A Sabaton song exclusively about Canada and Canadians.... I AM SO HAPPY!!! Canada is an underrated military nation!
Side Note: Indigenous people are also incredibly underrated. They are intense and fearsome warriors. In the War of 1812 Americans surrendered entire forts on the mere rumour that the Canadians' Indigenous allies were out and about. I'm not Indigenous, but they were probably some of the most terrifying individuals to fight back in the day, and they deserve better.
As a Canadian thanks and let me explain a bit about the citienship. There were treaties not conquest. Now if one side is a fully soverign nation then they wouldn't be citizens of the second. In practical terms the two are so interwoven that the are one quilted nation. As to how merged or independent is still a varied opinion to this day. I volunteer at a First Nations center in Toronto with many as friends. I've shared this on facebook for them.
also important to note that treaties don't negate genocide... many treaties were signed through manipulation and coercion the majority have been broken too...

For those wondering why anyone would nonchalantly sneak into an enemy trench and just chill or take their stuff... it's an indian thing. However, this sort of behavior is referred to as Counting Coup (a show of bravery and skill). To count as a Coup, a warrior, at the very least, needed to defeat an enemy in battle with the epitome being simply touching a foe and to escape unscathed. What also counted as a Coup was stealing an foe's belongings (horses, weapons, ammo) and fade without them noticing.
This also was a very subtle way for an indian to say, I can waltz into your camp. Go where I want. Do what I want. Take what I want. Walk right back out and there's not a damn thing you can do about it. A very scary concept to contend with when dealing with an opponent who is the North American equivalent of a ninja.
Francis, being born and raised into a native society and culture (especially at the tail end of the Indian Wars) instilled a special kind of mentality. This coupled with a certain set of skills honed over a lifetime of hard living and the sheer will to survive would serve a sniper and scout very, very well.
