- The United States entered the battlefields of Europe in 1918. Among the first Americans to participate in the fight are the U.S. Marines, who quickly adopt the names Devil Dogs. One of their most notable engagements is the Battle of Belleau Wood in June 1918, where the Marines fought the battle-hardened Germans for 26 days.

This episode is about the US Marines and their actions during the Battle of Belleau Wood in 1918. While most of the footage in this episode is depicting the marines and the Germans in 1918, and some of it is even depicting the actual fighting in Belleau wood, there is not a whole lot footage or imagery from the action. So for whoever is enough of a history buff to spot that some of our illustrative material is in fact depicting other engagements, well spotted! We try to use authentic material whenever we can, but in the end we have to make an episode visually attractive and dramatic, and we can't do that with just looking at Indy's head for 15 minutes (although I'm sure that many of you wouldn't mind). That was the announcement. Peace, rock on and cheers!

Who could ever think we don't want to look at Indy's head for 15 minutes??
YES! FINALLY! DEVIL DOGS!
Will the next videos be more of the new or some of the old songs. cause I was listening to a old one and wanted to hear the history on it, forgot which one tho.
A Wisconsin newspaper had an article on the "Devil Dog" nickname on April 27th, 1918. Some newspapers used this nickname as early as April 14th, 1918. So essentially, this song has a Wisconsin connection!
Indy has a beautiful forehead,

Marine Logic: "If you walk into an open field with the other guys shooting at you, just keep walking; they'll run out of bullets eventually."
Who knew it would've worked?
So the Marines use the same logic as the Russians?
@@andrewlynch4126 And Allies in '44. I mean, "If ain't broken..."
@@andrewlynch4126 they made that logic before the Russians learned about it
Marine here.
We were told in a boot camp "history" lesson that we were given the name Devil Dog for a myriad of reasons, but my favorite was because the gas would cause us to foam at the mouth while we were hooking and jabbing with our bayonets, terrifying the German soldiers who thought we were literal demon dogs from hell.
I love it
Semper Fi, Marine. My brother in the Navy will send you some crayons to enjoy 😉
That would make for one hell of a scary sight to the casual observer.
Kinda like the Russian "Attack of the dead men" but in their case they literally did have foam, blood and bit of skin coming from their faces while they did their counter attack lol
The Devil Dogs story isn't true, it was invented by the American newspapers & the phrase is found in 100+ US newspapers 6 weeks before Belleau Wood actually happened. Slightly embarrassing really.

I was thinking he was pulling off the "southern rocker" pretty damn well.
I've always thought that about Pär: he'd be the favourite uncle at family get-togethers, but probably has a black belt in karate if you piss him off. Could Pär confirm?
I always thought that Pär was more like a Swedish Wizard who always rolls 20 on his Knowledge (History) checks.
'Germans still thought the Americans were cowboys and farmers." Pär straight up looks like both at the end.
In a good way
And then... THEY WALKIN’ HERE

Lavrentivs I love how your only contribution is projecting insecurity because people would dare to like the marine corps.
@@MrBucksfan7 It's more about putting that quote in the context of being said by recent arrivals to allies that have died in the millions for the past 3,5 years.
Lavrentivs Why? Is anyone unaware that WW1 started before the Americans arrived? Also your context is unnecessary since the quote literally states “we just got here”. As in they recently arrived.
Americans are trying to show respect and admiration for their past warriors and you’re making gratuitous points that everyone already knows. The point of the quote isn’t “hurr hurr Murica won WW1 by itself”. The point is “Hey the usmc are amazing fighters determined to fight and win and we admire that”.
Fat merican angry haha
Marine here, and great grandson of a WW1 Marine. I've been waiting for this since I saw the track list. I am not disappointed.
"And, waking or sleeping, I can still see before me the dark threat of Belleau Wood, as full of menace as a tiger's foot, dangerous as a live wire, poisonous with gas, bristling with machine guns, alive with snipers, scornfully beckoning us to come on and be slain, waiting for us like a dragon in its den. Our brains told us to fear it, but our wills heard but one command, to clean it out, and I can still see before my very eyes those waves in the poppy-spattered wheat-field as the steady lines of our Marines went in."

Dan Daly is a hero in the Marines. Two time Medal of Honor Recipient and great SNCO. We learned about him in Boot Camp almost immediately.
U.S. Marines are gruff in their language, it makes the message stick. I know I still shock people with my words, even when their isn't profanity, we have a way with words.
Marines are known for being psychotic and it’s wonderful.
@@MrBucksfan7 -Being a Marine permanently marks your heart and soul. I am not the same man and never will be that I was when I was 18. Marines fight to win and have a lot of fun doing it.

@@TheSingleTrucker I'm not saying that the USMC didn't provide valuable service, but listening to some people here, you'd think that they won the war single handedly rather than went up against an exhausted Germany whose army was drawing it's last gasps after four years of constant fighting against mainly the french and russians whom themselves had suffered millions of casualties.
Gay
Hey. I asked my dad (retired Marine) why they were called the devil dogs. He said it was a nickname the Germans gave them. But it wasn’t entirely about their furious battle tactics. It was actually a side product of all the officers and NCOs getting killed. Then new leaders would arise from the ranks. These new leaders didn’t know how to lead a charge or communicate so they actually turned to barking (whether barking orders or literal barking, it’s up to the Marine you ask. My dad portrays it as literal barking) to signal a charge. The Germans heard barking and were confused as you’d probably be when you hear dogs in the other trench. Then out of nowhere there would be a ton of Marines charging your position.
Basically it was the barking then the furious attacks that led the Germans to nickname the Marines the devil dogs.
Also these attacks became really scary for the Germans because they realized that America’s finest were charging them leading to terror through the ranks.
I love you guys’ music and I love learning the history behind the events that inspired it!
Just dropped by to say that every song you've teased so far sounds amazing and the sabaton history channel is truly your calling :DDD

Belleau Wood is a huge part of the Marine Corps history and identity, to the point where it is taught in Marine Corps Recruit Training along with iconic figures such as Dan Daley.

My favorite quote to "supposedly" come out of this battle was from Army Gen. John Pershing. As the story goes, when he heard the action report, said, "The deadliest weapon on God's green earth is a Marine and his gun."
Both my parents are Marines, and I'm very proud of them!
And you have every right to be!
Sabaton History Thanks!
The story I've heard and makes sense about the term devil dogs is how the Marines looked during a part of the battle. After the gas attack and the Marines were trying to take the hill, they had to climb often times scrambling on all fours. Couple that with gas masks and some drooling and foaming at the mouth from heat and it's a scary sight. What the germans saw charging them were crazy men climbing on all fours with long gas masks, drooling/foaming at the mouth and blood shot eyes and were reminded of the dogs from hell.
The Devil Dogs story simply isn't true, the Germans didn't name the Marine's anything other than American's. It's something made up by American newspapers & was in print for over a month prior to Belleau Wood.
Fun fact: Dan Daly was one of only two soldiers to ever receive two Medals of Honour. By the time he fought at Belleau Wood he was already 44 years of age and had received those two MOH. The guy was a certified badass
Looking forward for devil dogs, hopefully it’s even better than the lost battalion

Yes, and they were extremely effective and feared by the Germans
@@charleshamilton1291 Nope, they were unreliable because of issued ammo.
@@robertkalinic335 Yes, but when they did work they were a force to be reckoned with.
@@hawtdawg8049 Its just a shotgun, you talk about it as if it were some wunderweapon. You should praise smg's instead, shotguns have heavier ammo, smaller capacity and range. I dont think there ever was army using shotguns except for very limited special purposes.
@@robertkalinic335 Shotguns are very environment specific weapons, and the cramped trenches of WW1 were about the best you could get with them.
