We're back in World War Two with Panzerkampf about the Battle of Kursk and the included Battle of Prokhorovka. It's an exciting episode with lots of detailed maps made by Eastory. We would also like to thank Markus Linke for doing the research and of course our beloved Indy Neidell for writing and hosting. We are only able to hire all these awesome people because of your support on Patreon. As Joakim says at the end of the video: 'that's what makes this happen'. If you would like to help us create this awesome show, make sure to take a look at our Patreon page -> www.patreon.com/sabatonhistory
That was it! Now, ROCK ON and enjoy the episode! 🤘🤘🤘

Model is very much an underrated german general and is certainly the best defensive commander of the war . He is responsible for prolonging the war through excellent defence strategy. He is often overlooked in favour of men like manstein, guderian or even rommel. His analysis of the inevitability defeat at kursk and defences averted a complete route after he was forced to call off his attack.

Allthough I really like this video there's quite a lot of historical inacuracies in it...
Worst one is that General Model was neither a field marshall at this time (he became in january 1944) nor did he command german army group center (that was field marshall von Kluges job) but 9th army AND 2nd panzerarmy at the same time.
Also the whole "battle of prochorovka"-story just seems to follow the sowjet post war propaganda although - as recent studies by e.g. Dr. R. Töppel or Dr. K.H. Frieser showed - it was a total disaster for Rotmistrovs two tank corps who nearly got anihilated with losses of about 300 tanks while the SS-Panzer-Corps in total didn't even lose 20 tanks on 12th July 1943.

The song is also a tribute to persistence. The Russian did not give up. There is another song about the Russian front in a very different style by Al Stewart (yeah, the Year of the Cat guy). It's called "Roads to Moscow" and is told from a single soldiers perspective. Ironically, The Character is sent to the Gulag. Stewart doesn't specifically say so but the soldier is Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.
One thing That seems to be a common thread in many of the Sabaton songs is that the average citizen can rise to heroic situations.

The battle included a series of attacks and counterattacks during the week.
If specifically about Dubno, then on June 26, the 43rd tank division of the 19th mechanized corps, using 79 tanks of the 86th tank regiment, broke through the defensive positions of the German 11th tank divisions and by 6 o'clock in the evening broke into the outskirts of Dubno, after midnight it came retreat.
On June 27, only hastily organized detachments of the 24th Tank Regiment of Lieutenant Colonel Volkov and the 34th Tank Division of the brigade commissar Popel headed for the counteroffensive on Dubno. Having crushed defensive barriers, the Popel group in the evening entered the outskirts of Dubno, capturing the enemy’s 11th Panzer Division’s rear reserves and several dozen intact tanks. During the night, the Germans redeployed to the place of the breakthrough part of the 16th motorized, 75th and 111th infantry divisions and closed the gap, interrupting the supply routes and surrounding the Popel groups.
The defense lasted until July 2, when ammunition and fuel came to an end, the detachment, having destroyed the remaining equipment, began to break through from the encirclement. After passing over the enemy’s rear over 200 km, the group entered the location of the 15th Rifle Corps of the 5th Army.

In terms of largest tank on tank force egagement, well, not exactly. In late june 1941 Battle of Brody saw clash between close to 5k soviet and 1k german machines, on area qutie smaller than in Kursk. It;s not wery well known battle, if simply out of reason how chaoitic it was, and that sovitets lose it badly.
