- Sabatons song Blood of Bannockburn is about the First War of Scottish Independence and one of it's key figures, Robert the Bruce. He fought the English King Edward who invaded Scotland when Bruces revolutionary force forced all Scottish nobles to join his cause or lose their lands. Edward moved on Bruces army while they were besieging Stirling Castle, but his plans to overwhelm the Scottish was opposed by Bruce.

Hey!! We're leaving the modern times (which instantly that answers a frequently asked question about if we're just sticking to WW2) and will enter the Medieval Era. The 3d animated maps are made and researched by Eastory (check his channel here: czcams.com/channels/ElybFZ60Hk1NSjgCf7I2sg.html ). As the battle took place long ago, there is little documentation about it and there are several possible reconstructions of the events of the battle available. We had to prefer one version and proponents of others may criticise it. The most risky decision was to add the effects of land rise and make the Forth river larger as a result. This is absent from most of reconstructions, but Eastory studied some old maps and according to them the sea level in 15th and 16th centuries was far higher in the region.
Enjoy and STAY AWESOME! 🤘🤘

Sabaton wearing Kilts is something I didn't know I needed untill I got it 😂😂😂
It's historical, so...
It's perfect
If you like Sabaton and you like kilts, you might want to check out a band called Skiltron out of Argentina. Some of their songs also have a historical inspiration and they're named after one of the battle formations famously used by The Bruce during his fight against England!
@@SabatonHistory wearing kilts for a song about Bannockburn isn't historical, you may have been watching too much brave heart.
The kilt first appeared in the 16th century. Bannockburn occurred in the 14th century. Loyal Piper is correct. _Braveheart_ is fun as an adventure film, but is woefully inaccurate about history.

I was surprised when i saw Joakim . He doesn't like cameras very much.
He loves metal and history though, so he was excited to be in the studio for this 🤘
Ok, so... I don't know how I missed the World War Two and The Great War channels... CZcams likes to recommend me random shit but never mentions those channels, alright...
Better late than never, right?
Don't worry Rafa, I'm in the same boat with you.
You've got a lot of glorious catching up to do
Good to see someone new discovering those series! :D
Unfortunately I think youtube is trying to promote (actually no they straight up are) either harmless content (absolutely nothing controversial as to stay "sanatized") or content from big media pundants. Just look at their trending tab, and you'll either see some of the most vapid shit on the site or crap from CNN or SNL. Guys if I wanted either of them I'd turn the TV on......
When I saw it was from the medieval period I was like " oh it's the medieval period I am not that energetic about the period" but when I watched it I got energetic about it instantly
Cause it's fuckin Sabaton

And freaking bagpipes
Indy doing a Scottish accent is something that I didn't know I needed.

I've genuinely learned more history from Sabaton than my actual school
Same here. When I was in school, they still taught us that Poland just rolled over when they got invaded. Then I listened to 40:1 and had to look it up to learn the truth. God Bless Sabaton!

To quote Al Murray
"You say Bannockburn, I say Culloden. It ain't the heats that matter, mate. It's the finals."
For real though, Bannockburn was a textbook example of brains over brawn, imo.
My history teacher keeps asking why I know so much about old battles and such, I told him a metal band taught me, he laughed and said he would like to see that. It’s been 4 days and he still asks what Sabaton songs I recommend...

Long Bows didn't so much destroy the French Knights as it wreaked their horses not the riders on them. The numbers of prisoners taken at Agincourt speaks to the effectiveness of full plate armor. Their poor horses on the other hand ;_;

And the poor guys who didn’t have plate armor or had crappy visors
That the english murdered their prisoners at Agincourt didn't help the prisoners much either =P
Master Skywalker, there’s too many of them! What are we going to do?

The horses would be doing fine if they werent slowed down by defensive structures and mud, it was quite crappy place to start cavalry charge.

Another fun fact (according to my pa) to add to this: Robert the Bruce was the one who coined the phrase "If at first you don't succeed, just try, try again."
When he was first defeated, as mentioned in the video, he hid in a cave, where he saw a spider in the corner, trying to build a web. It was trying to jump from one point to the next, but kept calling. However, the spider kept climbing up the wall to keep on trying until finally, it made the jump and completed its web. Because of this spider, Robert the Bruce realised that just because he failed once didn't mean he should give up for good.
But like I said, this is according to my pa.
I did a speech at a speech festival about the Bruce/spider story! I won gold for it!
Fun facts, Scottish army didn't use kilts and blue war Paint during Bannockburn, that's a stupid creation of Hollywood's brave heart, they look more like the bloody picts the Romans fought near a millennium earlier, their army in reality was more like the English with spearman, not a table of farmers.
Of course, the Kilt was a tradition later invented and applied to Scottish culture retrospectively. Sad how one movie's representation has that big of an impact on how the majority of people view history.
Um, don't you mean a _millennium_ earlier, or did the Romans come back for a bit of a rematch in the twelfth century?
@@robashton8606 yea, spell check literally hates me.
@@loyalpiper
It must do if it changed a misspelling of millennium into century.
You mean the Gauls?
Damn, Joachim doesn't skip leg day...
"And got his army rekt during the battle of Methven!" My goodness that had me laughing hard thanks to the Scottish accent. I didn't expect such a twist.

TheCreedEvolution Keep working towards your goal, "Those whom do not learn from history, are destined too repeat it." Remember historians are the guardians of a civilizations roots.
The quote actually is 'Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it', but thanks for sharing nevertheless ;) Thanks for the support and we're glad you like it!
One of my friends: Britain is unbeatable.
Me: Laughs in Robert the Bruce.
I was literally listening to Sabaton on CZcams when I saw this, I was like OH GOD YES
Joakim attempting to look up someone's kilt is literally the funniest thing I've seen in ages.
As someone just discovering Sabaton who grew up in Bannockburn, I absolutely love that this song exists
Proud to say my dad was Scottish born in October 1937 in Dumbarton, Scotland he served with the Royal Air Force in the 1950s. So this song makes me proud as a part Scottish man
Great song and history I live 2 miles from Bannockburn. Please go and visit the Bannockburn museum loads of history and u get to see what the battle was like in 3D with arrows fling past you horses everywhere war crys it's unbelievable...

The last battle would be great as well!
2/3 through!
Hung drawn and quartered ... they displayed his body parts to stop people from rising again. Theres a legend about bruce and the spider in a cave while he was hiding from the English. The spider kept failing to build a web.. but kept trying. Supposedly this is what inspired bruce to keep fighting no matter how many times he failed.
Apparently, there were from 29 to 43 Knights Templar on Bruce's side during the battle too, which just makes this 1000x more awesome than it already is!
Even though I'm English, my Scottish blood loves the story behind this song! I'm going to have to find a way to get this channel into my history lessons.
Very band plays, but not every band truly rocks.
Inspirational words from Indy: “You’ve rocked with Sabaton, now rock with me!”
Thank you Sabaton for delivering this to some that may not know the true story of this prolific moment in Scottish history
Watched the "Art of War" video last night, and I'm here now listening to how Bruce outmaneuvered the English nodding my head like I know battle tactics all of a sudden.

Once again I find myself enjoying history more than ever with Sabaton and friends
Although the main ending of The Great War channel (for the actual war) was pretty sad, this new channel is great. Indy teaming up with sabaton? AMAZING.
It just reminded me that when I was swearing my oath as a german soldier, the song played before the ceremony was "The march of Robert the bruce". It was a few weeks ago and you just reminded me. Thanks, Sabaton!
Congratulations! You're very welcome!
Still one of my favourite Sabaton songs of all times :))

Thank u for telling the History of my homeland for what we have fought for. God Bless Scotland!
One of my top 5 favorite songs! Fun fact from me, after winning Stirling castle and becoming king of Scotland, one of my ancestor's actually put the crown on Robert the Bruce!
Wow it's amazing that you can track your family back to that time. I envy you. All I got is some potato farmers in the 18th century.

That might come in the future, but at the moment our planning horizon doesn't allow for it. We record these in bulk, so we have to plan about two months ahead of time. Shorter planning horizon makes it more expensive, but once our support on Patreon grows we might be able to do something like that.

Well thanks!!
Very late to this but I've known for some time now that I am a direct descendant of Henry de Bohun who is probably the most "(in)famous" person from my family tree, and I have a plate depicting Humphrey de Bohun, the 4th Earl of Hereford in 1322 with my coat of arms. It's a little surreal knowing that my own family came *that* close to killing the king of Scotland in this battle.
You know, an interesting tidbit is that theres many artistic depictions of Henry and Robert's duel but a lot of them can't seem to decide what the coat of arms actually looks like for the Bohuns. There should be a white diagonal stripe in the middle, but some depict it as red. Theres even one painting where its straight up the incorrect coat of arms. You can even see this in the video when Indy is talking about this duel, the first image popping up has the incorrect coat of arms for Henry on the shield, but the one after it where his head gets the coconut treatment has the correct coat of arms on the shield.
