  • Despite restrictions that were put on the German navy after the Treaty of Versailles, the Kriegsmarine rebuilt in the 1930s with one goal: to be bigger and better than ever. Two powerful Bismarck-class battleships formed the pinnacle of the German naval warship production. When the British caught wind that the Bismarck was out in the open in May 1941, they in turn formulated a goal of their own: to take it down for once and for all. The Sabaton song 'Bismarck' sings about the chase, the battle in the Atlantic and consequent fate of the Bismarck.

      Bismarck was virtually unsinkable though.
The final confrontation lasted over two hours of being constantly shelled and the fucker didn't sink.
Dorsetshire poured a number of torpedos into her. Did not care.
She had to be scuttled by her crew to prevent the ship from being captured by Britain (Not that it was going to. The order "Sink the Bismarck" has 1 operative word.")

It did go well a few times, the HMS Victory, launched in 1765 was considered unsinkable, It is still intact in drydock despite being bombed by the Luftwaffe in 1941, and there is talk of restoring her to seeworthiness. The USS Constitution launched in 1797 was also considered unbeatable (though this one may be an after the fact designation, than an at the time designation) and is still a commisioned warship in the US Nvy.

Another video about Force Z had something interesting to report. The HMS Prince of Wales was hit by a torpedo that damaged one of the propeller shafts. The out of control oscillations broke seals and the ship began to take on tons of water. The ship also slowed down such that it wasn't able to dodge/comb torpedoes. The battleship admirals of all navies learned (if they didn't already know) that ships without air cover were little more than expensive bathtub toys. The ignominious end of the Yamato at the hands of numerous aircraft in 1945 was "Billy Mitchell's revenge" on battleships.

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Bismarck the battleship?
I thought not, its not a story the Royal Navy would tell you..
Its a german legend, Bismarck was the heaviest battleship in the Kriegsmarine, so armoured and so deadly, he could use his guns to influence the 38 cm shells to burn enemy ships.
He had such an unnecessary amount of armour that he could even keep the ones who crewed him from dying.
The german naval design is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.
He became so armoured and heavy, the only thing he was afraid of was destroying his rudder controls and oil tanks, which eventually of course he did.
Ironic, he could save others from damage, but not himself.

      Bismarck was the biggest Battleship:
A: Ever build at the time it was in operation.
      B: Ever build in Europe.
So the sentiment can still stand, even if Yamato was redonculous thicc boi.
Yamato and Musashi WERE larger, but were put into service at the END of 1941, when Bismarck was already sunk. They also got laid down quite a bit later, so for a while, Bismarck and Tirpitz were indeed the largest battleships ever...

Not sure if you heard about this; but from what I understand, Tovey and the Admiralty actually considered the Bismarck using the Denmark Strait as being a low probability, which was why Hood and Prince of Wales were dispatched to guard that area; Hood was by that point in desperate need of a major refit, and Prince of Wales was rushed into service to escort Hood; she still had men from the Cammell Laird dockyards working on her when she sailed, and was also still suffering problems with the main weakness of the King George V-class battleships; the A and X turrets constantly malfunctioned due to having to mount four guns in them.

It feels good to hear the story of the good old Bismarck once more and the battle all around it. Sabaton and Wargaming did some great teamwork together to bring this story back alive. There should be more bands doing this and Sabaton is an good example to that !

Thanks for doing both the song and the history Sabaton! I love your work. I also had no idea you took requests. Can you guys ever make a song about the Battle of the Alamo?
    Love from Texas.

I'm so glad they brought Indy to help host the show. One of my favourite youtubers with one of my favourite music groups speaking about history

Greatest song and representation of the dramatic story of Bismarck! One of my all time favourite songs instantly by the first time I heard it. This is the best band in the world people ! Representing history and educating the masses because not everyone is aware of the events that took part in the biggest war and most interesting part of human history. Bismarck was the best ship but the carriers always have the upper hand... Nevertheless it is the TERROR OF THE SEAS THE BISMARCK AND THE KRIEGSMARINE! Also shout out to Indy and his crew for such great history CZcams channels!
