  • Europe had grown weary of war by the summer of 1648 and after much deliberation, peace talks in Westphalia had reached their final stages. Warlords across the entire continent were preparing for peace but not all of them agreed. The exceptionally ruthless German-Swedish General Königsmarck advanced into Bohemia to lay siege to Prague.

    This episode about 1648 is about peace and about a devastating and deadly siege to Prague. We enjoy doing these episodes as we usually only make episodes about more modern topics. Now, we have to do without film and photo material, and be creative with paintings and sketches. Kudos to the editor Iryna who makes that work brilliantly! Hi Indy and Sabaton, I once commented that you guys should do a video about this song. I live in the Czech Republic and really appreciate it that you guys write about our history. I'm not sure about which Crown Jewels you guys are talking about, the most famous crown jewels from Charles IV are in our possession. But there are some things that the Swedes have like a Bible made out of skin and numerous art works. To be honest, I didn't even know about this battle until I heard the song, and I doubt 20% of the country knows it. If they keep it, then they keep it. Today it's not something that I've ever heard talked about. But I do think, that as a sign of good deed, and to celebrate our alliance, the war, etc etc, that if the Swedes gave it back then they have nothing to loose, and it would only bolster our friendship with them, and make them highly respected in our culture. I think it would also make the Czechs learn something about their history again, and make them notice that we weren't always a country that had a great army, airforce, and defenses, but everytime an enemy showed itself at the border then we threw down our arms immediately. 1938,1968, and so on. So like I said, "We don't care anymore, we would like it back, we would be grateful to have it back, and it would be amazing to have it back, to bolster ties, friendship, heritage, and remembrance. But like they also say," finders keepers, losers weepers. "

      the only problem during 1938 was that if we threw the army at germans, we could have been in way deeper shit than we were. But I would say 1648, 1938, (maybe 1968, not sure 100%) and 1989 are inner connected due the fact there were students involved in the events during those years

    My favorite thing about history: There are things like the 30 years war starting and ending in the same city. If this was fiction, it would be criticized for being too on the nose and too poetic. Just like how Life is Strange was criticized for being too on the nose, overly dramatic, angsty, and "not properly expressing how teenagers act"... except that was exactly how they act, or even dialed back a bit. Consider that, I watched the series unfold as a teenager growing up in the PNW, the exact same age as the characters in the story and could easily relate every single character to someone I knew in my life, I would say they did good. Another good example from history is how the Spanish conquistadors threw away platinum as a worthless metal on their endless search for gold and the Golden City.
    Reality is often more astonishingly poetic than fiction. More dramatic. More angsty even.

    @HajekOn Před 4 lety +142

    Well I am from Czech Republic and I don´t think that swedish army stole our czech crown jewels... Original czech crown jewels should be now locked in St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague castle. There are many parts of it but the most famous are: "Crown of Saint Wenceslas" which was made for Charles IV in 14th century, then scepter and globus cruciger which was made in first half of 15th century for Ferdinand I and coronation cloak which was made in 17th century. Then there is crucifix, sword etc.
    During 30 years war they were mostly in Wien. (Funny fact, with these jewels there were also gothical scepter and globus cruciger but they were not returned to Czech Republic and they are still in Wien)
    Return to the point: Swedish army "only" looted Rudolf II (Holy Roman Emperor) collection of paintings. Many of them from famous painters like Da Vinci or Michelangelo. And they are still in swedish museums. They also looted many Prague's palaces for their gold.
    I hope I am right. It's been many years from my history classes so if someone can please confirm it.
    EDIT: Good point by @Vit Duris: swedish troops also stole Rudolf's collection of statues, library with rare books etc.

      Well it was more than just paintings. It was also Rudolf's whole library with one-of-a-kind manuscripts (such as Codex Gigas which is now proudly presented in Sweden) and Rudolf's instruments for alchemy (as he was a chemistry enthusiast). It is claimed that 500 paintings, 70 statues 370 science instruments, 400 exotic furniture and tons of jewels, gems, and gold according to historians worth about 12 million coins (no idea how much it potentially is in current money). But yeah no point on dwelling that now I guess, just here for the sake of historical accuracy.

      I believe so too. Our crown jewels are safe in st. Vithus Cathedral. What Swedes did loot though was the Kunstkammer of Rudolf II., wich among other things held a horn of a Unicorn.

      @@Monsterpala Well it started with high ideals of protestantism vs. catholicism and one being the "right" religion which would lead their forces to a swift victory over the other side.
      But after decades of war and destruction that was more damaging to Germany than WW2, the idealism was gone and warfare had become a very pragmatic thing.
      I strongly suspect that Europes reluctance for religious wars and fanaticism stems from this time. Though it has made a comeback from time to time in other guises.

    And regarding your question, I think the Crown Jewls belong to Sweden at this point. I understand the historical pride those who claim to them today may feel, but those who they were stolen from are long, long gone. We should learn from the past, yes, but at the same time conflicts from the past should not define us in the future.
