- After the Great War, many different movements and parties tried to replace the by many despised Weimar Republic. One of them was the NSDAP, the National Socialist German Workers Party. Headed by Adolf Hitler, the NSDAP transformed Germany into a country that would once again bring war and destruction to Europe. The Sabaton Song ‘Rise of Evil’ is about Hitlers rise to power, and in this video we dive into the historical context behind the song.

In hindsight, we can clearly see the path to power and war that Germany and many of its people chose to walk in the 1930s. In practice, history is never as deterministic as it later seems. Nothing what happened was ‘meant’ to happen. With that in mind, let us walk you through the process of the Nazi rise to power. From a revolutionary movement in the ’20s to a political party in a democratic system.
We encourage debate and discussion about this in the comment section. However, we don’t allow for any extreme, racist, anti-semitic, revisionist or apologist theories down here. These comments will be moderated by historians and, while keeping your freedom of speech in mind, we will enforce our rules with a ban if necessary. Please keep it civil.

Very well said. I really hope that the comment section will remain as handsome as those under your other videos, controversial topics are strong magnets for people with a very shifted point of view and an even more shifted point of language. Human dignity comes above freedom of speech, after all.
This song is one link in the chain of events that drew me deep into the subject of Sabaton, history and the nature of humans interacting with each other in the worst possible ways. While easily misunderstood, you literally only have to listen to the song's lyrics to get the meaning and the motivation behind it.
"Burning books to spread Anti-Semite propaganda
Who will stop the madman's reign?
Night of broken glass, send the Jews to Dachau death camp

I find it ironically funny that Sabaton gets mistaken for pro-nazi considering most of their songs about nazis is about them losing. I'm pretty sure a pro-nazi band wouldn't be writing glorifying songs about the Warsaw Rebellion or Vitold Pelecki.
I heard somewhere that they were once accused of being Nazies because they wanted to have the Swedish flag on stage. Literally, their own country's flag, a country that was neutral in both world wars...
Also, all Sabaton songs are neutral 😉

As someone whose family lived through the Rise of the Nazi’s I can say it is a perfect example of the extreme concessions frightened people will make to someone promising them safety and prosperity. My Great-Grandfather served in the Imperial German Army in WW1 and after the war he for years would help defend his Jewish neighbors (One of whom was a WW1 veteran he had served with) and on Kristalnacht, when that Jewish veteran was dragged from his home my Great Grandfather went out into the street to help him. I never got to meet my Great Grandfather because they dragged him away that night too.
Never forget that no matter how dark the times may seem you must never forfeit your freedom to thugs and murderers.

This is a great stance for a band to take but really though, no one has no ideology, except for people who are completely ignorant of politics, like children. You're not taking a stand anywhere. It's very non-committal.
I guess you can say that Sabaton’s one ideology is the Swiss ideology of neutrality.

I appreciate how much Joakim strives to show that they're doing their best to stand on neutral ground with every bit of music they create. E.g. Panzerkampf shows a pride in the Soviet war machine because it's designed to be from the perspective of the Soviets, Ghost Division is meant to demonstrate the wild and unpredictable nature of the 7th Panzer Division because it WAS wild and unpredictable. There's no message besides the overall idea that war is destructive though some light and heroism will always shine through.
Sabaton's songs really show that they are truly neutral. No nazi would ever glorify a communist and vice versa
@Duck Go Quacks It didn't seem so at first. The Soviets were in relative disarray after Stalin's purging of the military leadership, and their struggle to defeat the much weaker Finnish implied they were incompetent. Also, the Germans did actually make a whole lot of progress while the Soviets were unprepared for the strike. Poor decision making mixed with poor timing and poor preparedness meant they floundered before they could secure a better hold on their territory.
@@lugialover09 Also one point I've heard that really fed into Hitler's thinking was that in World War I Germany defeated Russia, but failed to defeat France. Well Germany just beat France. Add what you just said and Russia should have been a cake walk.
With an exception of "In the name of god" to the being neutral for history's sake, for obvious reasons
@The Nexus I mentioned that some songs are intended to be from certain perspectives. In the case of The Last Stand, it's from the perspective of the Swiss Guard defending the Pope, so they would obviously say "in the name of God".

To be honest, the first time I heard this song the chorus with "The Reich will rise!" did throw me off a bit. Especially when you are not an english native speaker most of the lyrics can be hard to understand if "the Reich will rise" is the only part you understand, that sounds a bit scary. It's definitively a song you should listen to a few times and/or read the lyrics to understand.
Well, the song is called 'Rise of Evil', so I don't really see how you can confuse that with the opposite.
I am surprised to hear you of all people repeating the Autobahn myth. The Autobahn was a concept of pre-Nazi Weimar governments, and before taking power the Nazis opposed the programs. Once in power they co-opted the Autobahn program and took credit for each stretch that was opened. The myth of nationalist “infrastructure building” is alive in authoritarians today in the Philippines and elsewhere, so I would hope you busted this myth as well like you have others in your main WW2 series.
I looked into it, and you're totally right. While under Hitler, roughly 3,800 km of Autobahn was constructed, it wasn't nearly as much as he promised and as you say, he opposed the idea for a long time, and construction actually already started in 1913. I'm sure our researcher, who is very professional and a true historian, didn't mean to spread this myth consciously.
Sabaton History A lot of our conceptions of the Nazis come from the Nazis, so that remnants of their propaganda image of themself survived. I was ignorant of this until fairly recently myself, so I merely hope that this topic is approached at some point in your main WW2 series. There are other myths, such as the idea that Triumph of the Will was a great film rather than simply the highest budget propaganda film ever created to that point. We must be careful in retelling history that we do not allow dangerous ideologies to tell their own stories unchallenged.
@@nicolasbroaddus8819 Imagine saying "A lot of our conceptions of the Nazis come from the Nazis" history has literally been written by the victors... Talk about ignorance. Even to this day it's difficult to have a debate on ww2. say the slightest thing positive about Nazis or hitler you have to add an asterisks
Ah the famous Autobahn... Where Germans were testing aerodynamics disguised as "land top speed record cars" which by the way where capable of reaching 800kmh with powered wheels...
@@MattieK09 Most people do just condemn them, which is correct, but not all. I have encountered a lot of people who like to be "centrist" and come up with something good to say about everyone as well. Sometimes you get clueless centrists repeating things phrased by the far right though. My experience has been also that people who have an agenda in making the Nazis seem less bad often say something like "The Nazis were awful *but*" and then say something like: "they gave jobs back to the people." This is another example of a statement that is only true if you accept the Nazi perspective on the matter. Unemployment went down because they forced women and non-Germans out of the workplace and only counted German men. One of the most common I've encountered of this sort of defense has been the "at least they built good infrastructure" argument, which is one that is commonly repeated about various strongmen governments. It's a very common talking point by Duterte supporters.
And this is exactly why I love listening and supporting Sabaton, they don't bring politics or religion into anything, they are telling stories. Sure I am Christian, but I respect other people's religions and views, and if I do disagree on something it does not mean that I don't like you, it just means that I don't agree with that point of view. I hope that you guys continue to make badass music, I am planning to attend your show in September in Florida, as long as this dumbass virus is cleared up by then and I can get down there to see you guys.

Well, technically there was exatly one person that could have (theoretically) opposed Hitler and the Nazis: Hindenburg. If Hindenburg would have been maybe 15 years younger there is a decent chance the military, after getting certain promises, would have supported him instead. After Hitler he was until his death propably the most respected and popular person in Germany. And most of all he hated Hitler. regretablly it didnt go that way.
So ecentially the weimar republic and the last remnant of democracy only fully died with Hindenburgs death in 1934. Only after his death Hitler became Führer "by law".

I honestly can appreciate every song that sabaton does because they try and tell the history and in sabaton history with indy, he also tells the story of what happened unbiased. that is how it should be and i commend the band for striving to find stories throughout history to sing about so that many people can learn from them and hear about the many heros, sacrifices and horrible atrocities done throughout history to educate people. if ever i could meet the band I would say thank you for doing what you do because it is still a great way to tell history and I hate that so many accuse them of being all the thing politically when they are trying to make pieces fit as though the band has an agenda towards communism or socialisim. they are just trying to sing about world history and trying to honor the men and women who fought and died in so many conquest. and that is also another thing I love about this band that they do not do Swedish history only. I admire them so much and respect these men so much because they also sing about history of many countries besides their own to honor the many who lost their lives fighting for their home lands. and i apologise for not typing in the band members names and just stating "band members" or "these men" because I would butcher trying to type their names. but again much respect and thank you for what you do.
Great Video
Great video
For me as a German, the story behind this song wasn't new and even when I listened to it the first time I knew what kind of story it will tell, but the song it self is so great in telling this terrible story of the past that I always get goosebumps listening to it.
5:53 hey, August von Mackensen is there.
Looks grumpy as always
I am about to support you guys on patron in about 5 weeks
Awesome! Thanks in advance!!
I love this song, it is one of the more complex songs both from lyrics and music perspective. Great storytelling by Indy as usual! :)
Thanks Dóra!
I have to say thank you for this channel and for Sabaton. My grandfather fought in World War 2. Our history is slowly fading away. But this channel and Sabaton are trying to keep it alive. Keep up the great work guys! 🤘
They really need a song about SFR Yugoslavia and the Partizan resistance.
@Волфсангел Nedic collaborated with the Nazis during the period, so yes it was necessary. In NDH even more so due to the Ustasha and Chetniks fucking eachoter and the Bosniaks over while the germans watched and laughed.
So yesterday I watched this video. Today I had to talk about this exact topic in an exam. I passed it with flying colors. Thank you Sabaton!
you're very welcome!
if you released this video around a month earlier I wouldn't have failed my history test xD
seriously tho as always I love this video!
Can't you repeat it?
@@SabatonHistory The final final test happening next year again, and this topic may come up so luckily yeah!!
Well just binge some Sabaton History before you take it!
@@SabatonHistory Yesss I definitely will :D
I just think it's horrible how people accuse you guys of being this or that, you guys should be respected for the story's you tell, which are clearly neutral. When I told my mom I wanted to go see you guys once she just looked at me and asked "you'll watch out right? A group like that is bound to have loads of nazi fans" I got pretty mad cuz I knew you guys weren't promoting fachizm in any way shape or form, I'll show her the end, hopefully now she'll see you guys as you really are.😊
Why do I have the feeling, that my country will make this video unable here...
Since I started listen to Sabaton, I've learned more about world history then I ever did in school
Fuck yeah, one of your best songs
Me: Hey google search what’s is evil in this video
Google: no evil found
Oh i bet that if they play this in Berlin and everyone in the public sceams THE REICH WILL RISE will sound really really weird xD
I appreciate the fact that Sabaton will stand up for history (good and bad parts of history) and not let others rewrite it for political advantages
Well done Sabaton for having Indy from the WW2 documentaries Ghost division . To do this video with you. The WW2 Documentaries from Ghost division. are the best historical reports of this interesting period of time .
15:04 Sounds like Tommy does some strange shit...
Happy 20th!!
awsome video
Thanks
Nice video and music.
