Keep in mind that in the KHL, while they have different rules that make it not really directly comparable, Alexander Ryazantsev has the record at 114.127 MPH. Of course none of that compares to Happy Gilmore's shot breaking the glass and being clocked at 117MPH, but a friend of mine told me that movie isn't a documentary, so I'm not sure if we can trust it.
You could never shoot the puck in game condition like that. And you almost never can shoot it like NHL does. Few strides of speed and shoot. In KHL you can take basically unlimited speed and give it a whack.
Al might have been juicing.
The KHL records are as accurate and believable as the orr 118mph slapshot.
i call bs
In soviet russia you juice
The curved blade and huge increase in shot speed really explains the increased use of goalie masks around the same time
Lol. Who was the last NHL goalie to play without a mask? Plante?
Ok Googled it. Andy Brown Pittsburgh Penguins 1974.
when Chara broke the record even the announcers were talking about how crazy his curve was haha.
Reed Larson in the 70,s from the Red Wings had shots Recorded 115 to 120 MPH. He shot low. He broke skates and shattered shine pads
I heard Martin Brodeur say once that when he entered the league, there were 1-3 guys in the league who could shoot around 100 mph. Then in the middle of his career there were 1-2 per team that could shoot that hard. At the end of his career it was back to 1-2 in the entire league.
No doubt thanks to players like Wendel Clarke, who showed how much more accurate a wrist shot was. I was never a fan of that goon, but, credit where it's due, Clarke did bring the wristshot back from the dead.
Exactly. Harder to produce results even if your clappers are insanely fast. Few players can one-time at high speeds and still be lethal in effectiveness. Ovi, Stam, Laine come to mind. One thing I like about Zegras is that his one-time from the circle is amazing, even though he is popular for scoring via picking the puck off the ice. He can score in every way. The next gens like Bedard are just going to keep the variety coming. Fun time to be into hockey.
Brodeur's laughably incorrect on this one. There were dozens of guys that could break 100mph when he retired, if not a hundred.
@@shoknifeman2mikado135 Wendel Clark a goon?! He was far from a goon. You must be confusing him with one of the real goons.
@@beerleagueeverything8030 There's a similar concept in play in baseball. You've got power hitters who can hit for distance (and more home runs), while contact hitters are more able to hit the ball where the fielders aren't (getting on base more often). It's the rare player who can do both well.
Hahahaha the Weber’s Victims was a nice touch.
Funny that 2/3 of the ones listed were his teammates
Rob, I've watched your channel on and off over the last couple of years, and I gotta say, your quality has become top tier. I loved how this video was put together, between the edits, background music, and even the way you narrate
this is the first video i’ve watched of his in like 2 years… wtf this dude is so good now
Thanks buddy. I decided to take an extra week on making a new video format. I appreciate the feedback!
Your videos are killer. Would love to see some stuff on quirky equipment fads (like that RBK stick with the holes in it, or pump skates)!
So glad you rightfully started this with an Al Macinnis clip. He will always be the king of the slapshot to me. Not only could he launch the puck at over 100 mph with a wooden stick, he was pinpoint accurate and consistent with it as well. Even though many players have exceeded his speed these days, I don't think anyone has yet matched his combined level of speed, accuracy, and consistency.
So many times I understood the first sentence as if the first clip was made by AI...
I love the goldeneye music shift when shirtless chara enters!
Haha!
Love the N64 Goldeneye in the background
Kakko with a 107 this summer I think he can do it next
I wonder if Chara was held back by sticks breaking, since to my eye it looks like he wasn’t putting his FULL strength into his shot
that stick was 155 flex, meaning 155lb of force to bend 1in..... it was insanely stiff, unusable in real game...
excellent video, loved the graphic injury report card from webers shot and also the fact you used the bond music at the end
Jesus. Howe was an absolute unit
so was bobby hull
Man I remember seeing that Shea Weber goal vs Germany, was even sitting in the section behind the net and still couldn’t fully register what I’d just witnessed for a second
Love the videos man, keep it up.
*Great video. And I love the music choices too.*
hey rob, love the content. Where do you get the nhl stock footage from, and what do you use to edit/record? thanks!
Another great video man
Love your channel love your content. It's my hockey time machine.
I forgot about the Iafrate record but I do remember the hairstyle "dope"
Remember when we were kids there were so many hockey brands Cooper Sherwood jofa ...
How about doing a videos about how they bought out each other or merge or whatever that would be really cool
"Go Canucks Go"
Awesome video Rob! Great foundations, really cool research, and a nod to the Frk Bomb, only thing is that I think you bought in your hyperlinks too fast at the end there, you get maybe a second or so to read the entire list before the other video links pop up, but thats the small stuff! Great job again, sir
Thanks dude! : )
the slap shot was actually invented back in 1906 by a player named Eddie Martin in the Coloured Hockey League
I have the record of the first person to comment on this video
Wrong it was rob
Lol
Sick
Has anyone informed your parents about this? They should probably know right?
Great video Rob. Awesomely researched.
I beleive goalies got better also because of their athleticism and sheer size from the 90s onwards.
Techniques changed a ton while athleticism and size increased too. We went from goalies who almost never went down in the 70s and who flopped when they did to Butterfly goalies with controllable movement while still being somewhat upright. As goalies got much better, teams had to adapt and set up plays to get the goalie moving side to side.
This is the best video yet! I can't wait to see what you do next! :)
I don't care what ever any one says on this one - My "Hardest Shot" player is and always will be 2# Al MacInnis (Flames/Blues; 1983-2004)
He was at 185 cm and 90 Kg not one of the biggest defenders BUT with just an old wood-stick he was for near 2 decades THE most feared shooter in the entire NHL.
As still active, he was described like a folklore as "The killer-puck shooter" and was almost feared by all goaltenders in the league.
Even some of the elites like Martin Brodeur expressed deep concerns evrey time McInnis had the puck at the blue-line and would fire away the puck.
Al MacInnies "famously" split goaltender Mike Liut's goalie mask with a shot -
"There's hard and then there's Al MacInnis hard. I tried to get out of the way. If it happens too often, you have to sit down and re-evaluate what you're doing with your life."
Goaltender Mike Liut talking about MacInnis' slapshot.
To the best of my knowledge he is also the only player to break the boards with a shot. How hellish hard would that have had to have been, yikes.
@@CorporateCornholio Indeed true! And he even then in his days used an old stick instead of any modern ones. I mean imagine if he had used something modern or had had access to todays sticks = true cannon power!
Boom Boom Geoffrion is the guy who introduced the slap shot.
Yes the guy really omitted that plus he was off the mark on records .
Rock on!!! Thanks for sharing! Most cool.
Who will be the next player to claim the record?
🔴 New Hockey Card channel 🔴
czcams.com/video/CccGHfYCb1Y/video.html
Quinn Hughes Lmao
Martin Frk and Colton Parayko will battle it out for hardest shot.
Slavkosky in 5 years. maybe less. i think if he can develop into what he is projected too, add on a little more muscle, he's going to have a hard shot and be a good force to have.
@@STZ2289 no
FRK already has it!!!
Great video. Excited for the upcoming accounting midterm?
Martin Frk is the guy with the hardest shot
Minor leaguers don't count. Would you consider 75 home runs in Triple A baseball's home run record?
In the minors lmao. Cmon bro
@@johnbrowne3950 no but if a guy hit a ball 126 mph off his bat I would consider that the hardest hit ball in baseball history that would be a much better comparison
@@korynorman7837 It it was hit in the minor leagues by a minor league pitcher, it's a minor league record.
@@johnbrowne3950 if its the fastest in the world it's still a world record?? bruh
Frky! I didn’t even know that! Former Red Wing right there. He was fun.
Love the N64 Goldeneye music
Al's hairstyle was even more maniac than his shot speed :D
Great video!
Saw Iafrate rip a 100 mph slapper vs the Kings back in the day. Terrifying
Work hard next season Rob, you got the youtube algorithm.
7:22 luv the hair
Yo, I don't mean to hate, I'm only halfway through the video so maybe you mention it later on, but I think the biggest factor in goal increases is the fact that we went from 40 to 82 games per season.. goals per game did go up, kind off (though the very highest anyone has ever scored is about 1.00 goal/game, through all eras, from the very beginning with guys like Newsy Lalonde, to Maurice Richard to Wayne Gretsky), but I can't agree with the implicit explanation that a lot of it is attributable to technique/technology.
Agree on your point, but there's been way higher than 1.0 way back when. Joe Malone scored 44 in 20 back in 1917-18 which is 2.2 goals per game.
@@rileyyoung-ventuswill2258 right 😛 I was trying to be polite by not pointing out that the top 17 (!) goals/game seasons of all time have all been played before 1926 and so, in a very real way, you could argue that the upper limit of goal-scoring not only hasn't increased all that much/stayed somewhat consistent, but actually DECREASED with technology/technique. Otherwise, you're 1000% right haha
For sure! But it is also impossible to compare era's, especially during those in the inception of the league.
Everything evolve and change. Take the 'Big bad Bruins' or the 'Broad street bullies' of the 70s. Those 2 teams would be the smallest teams in the league today by height and weight. So it's not just hockey sticks that made players shoot harder, their conditioning and size help too.
I played men's A league down in Phoenix, a lot of ex-NHL guys and a bunch of ex-D1 players down in that league. I played defense and had Pro stock equipment. I took a few slap shots off the shin pads from D1 and ex NHL guys, my whole leg went numb. I couldn't believe the power. It's been a few years since I played and I still have a lump on my shin bone above the ankle where I caught one.
Would definitely make you appreciate the skaters that lay down in front of one.
@@TheSnatchbuckler I cringe when I see NHL players blocking shots, I can just imagine the pain as I've felt it, maybe not quite as bad, but real close. I used to come home from Phoenix bruised from my bellybutton down to my ankles. I had CANADA in reverse and the grid pattern of the side of the puck stamped on my stomach and places the pads don't cover more than a few times. It lasts a couple of hours then it just turns to purple, black and blue.
The golden eye theme was a nice touch.
I hope to hell goalie gear is keeping up with stick tech or we may see a through and through in the playoffs at some point.
7:11 just listen to the force behind that. Him(Iafrate) and Chara had absolute fucking cannons.
That pic of Howe is ridiculous. He looks better than most players today. Talk about old man strength
So frustrated the Kings never gave Frk a real chance on the PP. It was dismal last year. Even if we completely benched him 5 on 5, he'd be worth it if he could reliably produce on the PP
7:15 that is what you call flow, kids... lol epic hockey hair
Chara was probably terrifying to play against.
A 6 ounce, 1" X 3" disc needs at least 28 mph momentum in order to escape gravity and get above the ice. They were able to raise pucks to 4' even in the 1930s, even with straight ash sticks.
This is not true. Growing up with radars in practice, this was not the case
@@RobTalksHockey What IS the case? Do you have a case? OR did you drink a case? Do the math after you've put away another case.
No mention of Doug Wilson, who was regarded of having among the hardest shots of his era.
Technology is improving shot speeds but when AL McInnis was in the twilight of his career was his shot still competitive with the elite shooters even though he stuck with a wooden (can you believe it?) stick? I think that I recall some remark about that. Could anyone clarify that for me?
Did adding a curve to the blades also make goal tending harder in other ways? From what you said in the video, it sounds like pre-WW2 players were commonly looking to score in the low corners
It made shooting more accurate and shots harder, so yes. Adding flex to stick and loft to blade made shooting high easier.
Puck Handling was vastly improved, so a lot harder to even track where the puck is coming from.
I remember my brother’s friend telling that he played in some type of charity game with former Bruins players and that Lyndon Byers actually broke his cup when he was playing goal. He took a shot right in the nuts and it broke his cup is 2 pieces
Epic MPB on Iafrate.
I'd love to see Chhara try to beat Frk' record. Even though he is retired now.
Brett Hull that played for the Blues & the Red Wings had a terrifying slapper also
Yeah Hull's slapper was deadly, especially his one-timer
great video
I think it’s more impressive seeing a person in the mlb throw a baseball at 105 mph
Speaking of Bobby Hull, he once told his son Brett that 'you can't score all your goals with a slap shot' or something like that. Coming from the guy who scored most of his goals with a slap shot.
nice summoning salt-esqe video
I think one of those 7ft giants that got drafted the last 3 years will do it or at least get damn close
The inventor of the slap shot was Bernie Geoffrion or Boom Boom.
I was waiting to find someone who know hockey history a little!!!
crap, talking about hard shot and you don't put the father of the slap shot!?!?!?!? it's a shame.
good call my friend!👊
@@jean-rochdion4898 I’m a Habs fan what can I say.
@@Sockieknowshockey GO HABS GO TABARNAK!!!🤣
Shea Weber is basically a bounty hunter.
The replaceable stick blade was absolutely not introduced in the 30’s 😂
Fred Stanfield in the game 1 of 1970 Stanley Cup took a slap shot so hard it split Jaques Plantes mask in half and sidelined him for the remainder of the series
Do you think in the future there will be a new material used in the sticks and players would be able to shoot over 110mph shots, or new kind of pucks?
I think the average shot speed will significantly rise, and the mutant players who can take advantage of the stick will shoot 110+
@@RobTalksHockey bro.... you didn't even mention the name Bernard boom boom Geoffrion!?!?!?
the father of the slap shot....No Bernie bro!!! lol
I commented on your other vids saying your content needed to be better, wow man this vid was amazing I haven't seen anyone else cover this great job rob
Thanks buddy!
I still want to see Parako in the hardest shot competition
As a goalie, our equipment has come a long way in protecting from these shots. The only piece of equipment that still lacks, is helmet technology. 108mph to the cage, and the cage will break. 108 to the forehead, and you will have a concussion. Chest pads, Blocker, glove, leg pads, could all withstand this, with maybe a minor sting, but you'd be fine to continue to play. Headshot and your backup will finish the game.
Iafrete’s hair is criminal.
Chad Kilger for awhile held the record unofficially for a few years as well, 106.something I think.
Is it me, or is that the Golden Eye pause screen on N64 sound byte in the background?
Ah the sherwood 5030, my stick in high-school
this is cool
Laughting on your pronocaI laugh when you pronounce Zdeno Chara's name.
Iafrate’s hair was crazier than his shot
you get a like for putting the GoldenEye music at the end.
lololol love the McInnis clip
*MacInnis
Did Bobby's goal at 4:09 look familiar?
Connor must have been watching Bobby Orr footage because he pulled what was basically the same move on Rielly a few years ago. Which you know since you've all seen it a bunch of times.
McDavid is the only player since Orr too have the speed and skill required to even attempt moves like this.
Yeah I know that's a statement the deserves a huge "DUH you tool" response.
Bobby Hull shot was faster than anyone else.
Gordie Howe had a hard shot and he didn’t bring his stick up passed his shoulders
Tage Thompson is next. Has like a third of 100+mph shots this year
….then some dude is gonna come along and shoot 125 mph shot
Bobby Hull...119 mph slap shot. I have held his stick. Huge curve/toe hook. He was also the fastest skater of record at nearly 20mph, goal line to goal line. Bobby Hull, 5'10" 200lb. Wood sticks. No comparison.
Frk🔥
Yes players today shoot much harder than players in the old days, but it's ridiculous to assume that Joe Malone shot the puck at only 20-30 miles an hour.
Martin frk better be in this
Am I mistaking?? But judging by Shea Weber's career (Mostly Nashville/Montreal..) It was mostly his teammates who got injured due to "Friendly fire"? lol
How did you get Napoleon Dynamite to do the commentary? 😂🤣
Gotta remember that Gretzky pretty much single-handedly threw that average for scoring leaders WAY off.
Called also more games played = more goals.
Like the Goldeneye tune.
Can’t remember which player. But the same season chara broke that record at the AS game, someone else had a harder shot than that in an actual game. But because the player wasn’t an all star it got swept under the rug. So I’ve always been really salty about people saying Chara had the hardest shot.
You should do rise and fall of Anton khoudobin
Imagine having Chara and Weber playing opposite points on the same Power Play.
It’s literal chaos
I’d would like to have seen Al Iafrate with a modern stick
Holy Frk!
Martin FRK BRO 😎
Improved carbon lay ups
Martin Frk baby
I’ve never seen a man with a mullet that’s also balding that’s incredible
Bobby Hull's shot was clocked at 118.3 MPH with a wooden stick. That was once considered 100% accurate, but there is now some doubt.
Aint no way
