What a blast. Both the Fox body and the Nova were great races. That sleeper Nova is amazing and again, the chats are fun.
The edit was running long (about 40 minutes) so we had to selectively cut some of the discussions. It’s a fine line between too much and just enough 👍
@@TeslaPlaidChannel Totally get it. In my opinion you have a good mix, length, and a good format with a clump of the discussions at the end so people who don't want to watch them can move on. For me It's really neat to see how many guys you get around the tracks that are building AMAZING cars, are so cool, and want to talk about their cars. With your background you talk gas or electric and love them both. Kudos to the FL car people you hang with.
Those were very close races! Both the Mustang and Nova are serious drag racing beasts. I got the feeling that the Nova driver shut down early to not reveal the car's full capabilities. It is such a ideal sleeper, but he will only draw in private competitors if its times and speeds remain a mystery.
👍Yet worth noting that he doesn’t run “NT” to hide his times like so many drivers out there. I believe his overboost protection kicked in, as he had just upped his boost. Also, he was gearing limited. His engine was hitting redline in top gear at 145MPH, so he’s already changed his rear end gear this week to give more MPH. But it hurt his 60-ft and ET. Now he’s trying to get back to that 9.04 ET that he ran at the end of this night (slip shown at 22:23).
He might just get to 8.9s very soon.
Final note: Based on our Reaction Times in our last race, he would have needed a 9.05ET or better to win.😃
Wow. That Nova was so fast.
Andrew, thanks for the great runs. The Nova brought back some memories from high school, 1970 Nova SS, dark green ($900). Had a lot of fun driving that car around. Always look forward to your videos.
*Way to represent Andrew!* ⚡️🚗
great race Andrew.....love that sleeper Nova that is so quiet and so unassuming. And I use that line all the time; "not driving it for environmental reasons." Love it. Keep em' comin' my friend...post edit....that guy's look (Roy on the right side in the brown shirt) toward the end of the video is priceless.
Andrew good races. Very impressed with that Nova!
That Nova is a serious sleeper...sheesh. Crazy fast.
That Nova "wow" crazy good launches..... True sleeper
Great Racing!!! At 7:16 ReDonkulas!
I heard Andrew's wife has a" Please Put The seat Down "reminder note in the bathroom too.
We have no evidence to either confirm or deny that 😳
😂😂😂😂😂
close races are the most fun. Those runs were great!
👍Thanks, and these closer races are exactly why we take steps to avoid lining up with 10-second cars anymore…
That is some awesome drag racing you did that night. You lined up with some pretty good ICE drag cars. You are correct, that it was too bad the Nova slowed down at the end due to some issues. Good competition for you.
Thanks for the video and take care.
Great video!!
Awesome racing!!!
Your footage is second to none!! Always look forward to seeing your channel with a new video.
Thank you,
Love your channel, Andrew.
👍Thanks Ted! 😃
You got my sub because I totally enjoyed this video.
Nova is a sleeper. Would be a great street racer 💰
that nova is bad ass
I think he might have shut it down early to mask the hole shot loss.
Or the computer shut it down due to overboost? (The gearing took it too close to redline in top gear, so he’s already changed the rear end after this race)
Not that long ago ( week or so?), Brooks stated his Plaid was showing signs of slowing down a bit now that it has 20K miles on it. What are your thoughts on this?
That’s what happens when someone charges it to 100% at home, locks it inside a hot enclosed trailer and then tows it a long distance to the dragstrip. That’s the absolute worst thing someone can do to a battery pack… (full charge + heat + long delay before discharging)
@@TeslaPlaidChannel So mileage isn't really a factor? How many on yours?
@@stevesmith6236 This one has 13.5K miles and over 500 dragstrip passes.
Of course dragstrip conditions on any given night will affect cars. One bad pass (like the second one in this video) doesn’t make a pattern. Even at just 86% charge and imperfect conditions, we still ran 9.25 which is within a tenth of the fastest pass we’ve ever made (9.15) in perfect conditions.
Thanks
I own a model s, I obviously didnt build it so the fact that these challengers built these cars is something different
Not ever driver of a built cat actually build it themselves. It’s hit and miss….
Que buenas… gracias
Andrew, if you were to buy another Model S Plaid today,
would you choose _round_ or _yoke_ steering ?
I’d choose to have *stalks* like all our other Teslas have had. Whichever one gave stalks would be fine. If both shapes had stalks, the yoke is better for drag racing, which is the only way we use our Plaid. For a daily driver, round has more advantages, especially since we aren’t fans of FSD.
The post-race chats are my favorite part. Do you have a roadster deposit down? 🤞
👍Thanks! We continue to learn by talking to guys with all kinds of builds (turbos, blowers, nitrous, rotaries, etc). Lots of great hardworking folks out there at the track 😃
As for the roadster, it remains “vapor” without anything close to a production line yet. Fun fact: A $50K deposit in 2017 (when Roadster reservations started) would be worth over $250K today *if used to buy $TSLA stock instead*
(We bought some stock instead, yet not enough) 👍
Have you tried using drag mode for just heating up the battery then racing in plaid mode? Someone said this might have better results
If the “better results” means more spinning of tires, then, yeah…
Launch Control is locked out in Plaid Mode. Launch Control significantly improves the weight transfer needed for a good launch with maximum traction.
We’ve run 5.90s in the 1/8 mile with Launch Control (in Drag mode). We’ve never run near that in Plaid mode, no matter the temperature of the battery.
We’ve tried just about everything in these 600+ passes…
Looked like your driver's side front tire spun a bit on that 9.4
👍Must have been some slippage there, it’s the only explanation for those numbers
nice rims on the plaid short cap titanium lugnuts will help it not bad250.00
Ur going to have to hunt for bigger game.
I am curious… when you first showed up at drag strips, were you accepted by the community? Or did you have to win a few before they “let you in” so to speak?
Being friendly and having a long background knowledge with cars and engines seems to help. Most guys didn't know what I was driving when I first approached them to chat. Only a few (less than ~5%) have acted funny about the Tesla.
@@TeslaPlaidChannel was it you who posted videos of Tesla being introduced as go cart and energizer bunny?
@@89five3five Yeah, they did that BS to us a few times…
Will the Tesla turn up any more
That’s up to the company for now. The motors can handle it, so a software update could easily do it as they have several times before on our other Teslas. And then the Aftermarket will have mods for all EVs sooner or later…
Why is there an iPad on the dashboard?
Why does this ‘60s Nova have a dashboard full of electronics?
czcams.com/video/JN4T4Lijdog/video.html
(ALL new cars have screens of course, including Hellcats, Mustangs, Camaros, Corvettes, etc)
I never really thought about people loving Tesla for environmental reasons, all I know is if you hate on Tesla you're definitely not a car enthusiast! It's always been a dream car ever since I found out about Tesla years ago around when they made the model X. All my life I went to car shows, meetups, autorama, international auto show, gratiot cruises, Woodward dream cruise, but Tesla ruined it for me in the best way possible when it came to concept car shows from the day I found out about them since you can own a Tesla and it would be far better than any concept they show, far beyond their imagination.
Sorry but that is crap why would a car enthusiast like a Tesla they like driving the cars but in the Tesla you might as well be a passenger it takes so little skill i think i could get my 16 year old son that has never driven a car to get about the same quarter mile time
To me anyone that says you're not a car enthusiast for not liking Tesla's has never really had a fast car before LOL. There's no sport in racing a Tesla, push button racing takes no skill, takes away the human element and is no fun.
Yeah, i love cars and lots of other fast things. Don't like Tesla for lots of reasons and for dragracing its all about how/if you can control the horsepower and traction not controled the electronics.
Maybe best comparison i can give is that i know a guy who had a m5 v10 and a Corvette. Lets say equally fast but totally different feel. The bmw you could drive quite easy fast with and the Corvette was way more unpredictable. Had to be more careful how to drive it. And therefore driveng the Corvette was more exciting...
If that mustang was all wheel drive that Tesla would be eating good old gas fumes fumes
I love just how shady our Tesla pal is by showing us the rear view cam in these vids.
TPC: *he's close*
Us: How close is he!?
TPC: *not close enough!*
😂😅 I'm kidding of course. Keep rippin!
The consistent 149 MPH trap speeds despite the 19” wheels and weight you’ve taken out is pretty strong evidence that your car has lost quite a bit of power compared to when it was new.
If you watch your early Plaid videos, you were trapping 152-153 without any weight taken out.
That is a huge difference.
Good thing MPH doesn’t win drag races. ET does. 👍
Good thing the current ETs are still better than the ETs we had before taking the weight out 😃
And in our first ~300 runs (from when BOTH our Plaids were NEW), we ran one single 5.99 in the eighth mile. Now we run them every week (two in our latest video). That’s my kind of “power reduction”.
And since some tracks will kick us out for going over 150MPH, 149.x is perfectly fine for us 👍
And when totally new (DELIVERY DAY!) it was totally slower. 20 runs with a full recharge at beginning and the middle of the session. So much for your theory! czcams.com/video/CLQfR4TQyug/video.html
@@TeslaPlaidChannel 11 months ago when you first took out the weight, it was running 9.15-9.20 at 151-152 MPH. It’s now running 9.25-9.26 at 149 MPH. So you’re slower in the 1/4 mile by roughly one full tenth and 2+ MPH. That is significant. How many miles have you put on the car since you first took the weight our?
@@MarcE-sz7ld What were the conditions for all of the runs involved? Temperature? Wind? Track prep? Tires? 🤔
We’ve documented how Teslas run differently from winter to summer. Is that included in your precise calculations above?
There’s no such thing as a sleeper Nova
And yet, they were popular with old ladies many decades ago…
Sleeper? Yeah nah
Which is why every car guy and gear head (and even the track announcer) kept calling it “sleeper Nova”….
Fast from a dig but I have no problem beating plaids from a roll .
This Plaid beats everything in roll racing too, including modified 1400cc sport bikes: czcams.com/video/tAJixB2MMOQ/video.html
This 945HP McLaren 720S trapped over 154MPH in a 1/4 mile ROLL race and still lost to the Plaid 3 times in a row. Your C7 Vette traps over 154MPH? (Not seeing any videos of it on your channel…so why should we believe it happened?) czcams.com/video/NsOv2lJFabo/video.html
That tuned McLaren 720S has more power than your Vette (945HP) and weighs less than your Vette, so we can easily do the math…
And finally, if someone can’t figure out how to make their car hook, that’s nothing to brag about?
Bradenton?, Call Cleetus, he just is around the corner and has many cars that will crush you, Mullet, Ruby, Mc flurry, Leroy, the rat rod supra.
And yet he has said “no thanks, we run solo” every time we’ve asked to line up with him. Every time. The red turbo Corvette. The white foxbody. The police cars. All of them. He has declined every time.
You can see his car breaking down in front of us in a recent video. Watch him push it off the track. Wonder if they showed that on his channel? 🤔
But don’t just take my word for it. See the 9:35 mark of THIS Video -> czcams.com/video/8rP3kZItAEk/video.html
(McFlurry can also be seen at the 8:49 mark of that video)
Meanwhile, we’ve got almost TWO THOUSAND Tesla timeslips (all low 9s to mid 10s) without a single broken part. No maintenance either, other than one set of brake pads. No other car this fast can say that. None. Just sayin’

@@TeslaPlaidChannel I hear ya but from my experiences it's the other way around. Also you were in the 9sec bracket. We know after 163mph Tesla dies out on power.
Who cares that the Tesla is fast. EV’s are the most uneventful soulless cars on the planet. I sorry if I offend EV owners but there is nothing about that car that would pump my adrenaline on a track.
I agree with you 💯 %. Its not a car, its a golf cart with 4 seats, A/C, laptop. No engine sound, no exhaust note, no tire bite, no shifts. Just an uneventful adrenaline killjoy. Keep thinking gear ends won't figure out Tesla proof combinations...factoring power to weight, powerglide gearing, rear end, gears, boost, traction.
