I know you've probably answered this a million and 2 times but Why don't you run slicks?
@@jonathanjurena On a prepped track, when the car doesn’t spin and there’s no traction control intervention, slicks will only slow the car down with more rolling resistance. (The Plaid won’t put out “more power” just because it has more traction)
Ok thanks, makes sense. I thought I've heard you say it spins sometimes in a video or 2 I guess I could be miss remembering. Now I have heard Elon talk about tuning issues with the Plaid was balancing traction at launch. I bet with slicks and remapping of the power curve we can make it faster.
Okay found your video where you tried Mikey T's on your older Model S Performance czcams.com/video/n68KX0jJ7DI/video.html
13:45 Wow. Billy is no joke. That man can drag!!!!
really impressive - modest guy with a car that is not too showy or loud, but very very quick
@@mddah01 exactly!
Love stopping in here to watch you race, always a pleasure to hear your praise of every race and every racer! Well done bro!!
These close races are great nail-biters. I figured that he must have won the earlier 1/8th race, because otherwise he wouldn't have given you the hit on the later races. He had you with the 60' and also pulled strong to the end. It shows the caliber of prepped racecar and skilled driver that it takes to best the Model S Plaid, which is impressive on both sides.
Even seeing the firebird hit scramble mode. Looked like he almost had it on the second race but it managed to keep up. Question is when the driver of the firebird, hit the scramble button, does it activate something in the engine in order to catch up?
That firebird ain't no joke👍
That Firebird is awesome
Very well sorted Firebird
Thanks Andrew! It was great meeting you and getting to see how awesome your car is! We had fun!!
👍 What a great set of races! See you guys out there again soon-
Great discussion at the end. Nice races Andrew!
Glad you enjoyed it! Some viewers are just wanting the "action", yet we want to share the technical chats for those like you that can appreciate it. By moving more of it to the end, it helps to keep all viewers happy 😊
Andrew, great races. Always fun to watch. Thanks for posting.
Wow, that 2nd run was a true photo finish.. I'd love to have that 1.20's 60' time of the firebird..
Great vid Andrew. Enjoy all the explainations along the way.
Great races!! my new wheels are on! one of these days we will run again!
I need a plaid SO BAD!!! It's like a cheat code haha. Good stuff!
The silence and the rattling in the Tesla with the roar of the V8 next to it is a crack up 😂. Can you do a burnout in the Plaid for us please ? 😆
The process for a burnout (drift mode) requires the steering to be at an angle. Not safe with concrete Jersey Walls around the water box. But not needed on a prepped track, the Pirellis and AWD hook up for 1.4x sixty foots and we’ve done many 9.1s when the conditions were good.
We’ve gutted the back of the car, so that’s why it’s noisy and rattling in there. (No trim or sound deadening material in back)
Great video and races! ⚡️🚗
Learning a lot about the plaid. Love it. Mine is a 3 performance
I'm liking the addition footage at the tree, must be a pain tying it all together for CZcams.
Indeed, the editing takes much longer (5-8 hours) than the race nights themselves (2-4 hours)
@@TeslaPlaidChannel The extra attention to detail is very appreciated.
What a blast!
10:21 what is the Scramble button? Fun races - thank you, Andrew!
👍Great question! The Scramble button momentarily increases the amount of boost that a turbo motor produces. It’s great for those moments when you need just a “little bit more” to win a race. (Billy used it on our 2nd race in the video.)

Good runs!
Did you every figure out what was causing your car to pull to the left?
Unfortunately, we never determined the cause, despite a lot of interesting theories. But thankfully, it hasn't happened again, which leads us to believe it was something specific about that run (like maybe something very slick like transmission fluid on one side of the track, causing the traction control to intervene on that run).
@@TeslaPlaidChannel
That's good the issue has seemed to go away. The fluid on the track theory sounds plausible.
Awesome racing Andrew!
Just wondering if you raced in sick week,
In Florida? This year.
😃 Thanks, and nope, didn’t run at Sick Week
Esperar la configuración spaceX. Muy bueno. Gracias y hasta se me pone la piel de gallina 😂😂😂
That firebird managed to keep up with the plaid on the second race. Very close on that one.
Andrew how is your drive train holding up with all the runs? I'm learning soo much about electric cars. Tesla has made a Bulit proof electric motor setup! Amazing!, and lives!
No issues with our Plaid powertrain 👍
Have you ever looked into using the LR gear ratio (9:1) vs the plaid (7.5:1) in the rear motors? I think the plaid will nip 8's if this was possible to swap.
Interesting idea, worth discussing with Blake at Electric Performance. 👍I’ll mention it next time I see him…
@@TeslaPlaidChannel sounds good please let me know. If my math is right the theoretical top speed of the plaid gearing is 270ish mph with a max motor rpm of 23,000 rpm. Using long range reduces to around 210-215mph. It would be perfect if the car can hook like on a track with slicks. On a street it may be more prone to spinning and reducing power so could slow it down on street racing which would be a trade off.
its nice to see you can beat cars that cant,or arent good to drive on the street. If i was you I would only race demons or corvettes.I just got a 23 S Plaid but not going to the track with it
did the rules change on rollcages and shutes? I just bought my plaid 2 weeks ago and not sure if Im allowed to run the 1/4mile going 100%
👍 Last year the NHRA rules did change, but not necessarily “flat out”. Cars can’t exceed 150.0 MPH without a parachute. And the car’s safety gear (including brakes) must remain OEM unaltered. Not all tracks are NHRA, some are IHRA or Outlaw.
Most importantly, personal safety gear is required for all tracks, from Helmet to fire jacket and pants, shoes, gloves, neck collar, etc in order to run 9s. These requirements are a good thing 😃
@@TeslaPlaidChannel thank you for the info!
Andrew, quick question: what is the cost per lap/day of; your S Plaid wear + tear on your vehicle - VS - the cost wear + tear of a turbo or nitro car at the track? I imagine you are pennies on the dollar per lap/day at the track VS ice cars turbo or nitro anything. ya?
just checking. not a fan boy or anything just feel like it is not far how unbelievably fast your car is. (model Y owner here, no way I can keep up with you guys)
We have rooftop solar panels, so we don’t pay for much electricity. But when we pay, it’s $0.13/KWH, and a full 1/4 mile pass uses 3%, so that’s about $0.39/pass. E85 fuel is around $3/gallon, and 9-second cars use about one gallon per pass.
We’ve got about 500 passes on our stock Pirelli tires, but drag radials (~$900/pair) won’t last even 100 passes…
I never would have guessed that magnets could be this impressive. It just blows my mind that just a simple magnetic force could be so powerful and it’s not even connected to anything compared to ice’s compression and explosion that have to connect to the pistons to “push”.
"Andrew got the holeshot win"
Uhh, he got the jump bro.
True that 👍
That’s a low mph for that set up in the Bird ….🤔….good run nonetheless
He lets out way early and coasts through the 1/4 mile. We raced again recently and he did 9.0 at 123MPH, after doing 130MPH at the 1/8th mile traps…
Got your subscription! Yes he was faster than your Plaid. But, his engine is hurting in some way!!!! I see smoke after he let off on the run. He Will need a new valve job or worse!!!
I asked this same question several months back.
Has Elon acknowledged your efforts with the Plaid on the track?
Not that we are aware of…
Not sure is it every considered a hole shot win, when you are given the hit...
👍 Agree! Surely it wasn't what any of us would really call a “hole shot”, but the narrator of the livestream (LueTubeTV) wasn't informed of the pre-negotiated terms of the race 😃 (Given the hit)
Firebird is 1300-1500 HP
👍 At full tune, that’s correct, and I can’t reveal the times he runs in that tune. Yet the Firebird is a lot lighter that the Plaid: 4600 - 3300 = 1300 pounds lighter. So it could be running high 8s with just 900-1100HP 😃
8.74 @149 for the Fierbirds first run, not sure why Andrew feels the need to walk on eggshells around every racer the damn times on the board.
Gentlemen’s agreement, as we respect NT racers. (Yet anyone who watches LueTubeTV will have seen it on this night)
So basically you are having to race full purpose built race cars to get a good race now…
EVs will only get faster when electricity travels at the speed of light; 186000 miles per second. If plaid adds another motor and gets it to over 1500hp; it’s over on the street.
Not only has it been over on the street for awhile, on many nights it’s over at the track. We’ve had many nights where there are 100 cars at the dragstrip with only one or two cars are running in the 9s. Those are almost always trailered, and even if they did go out on the street, they need a big burnout on their drag tires to hook up.
That Firebird one can technically get groceries at the store with it.
Not legally, but still.
Since that's the most important thing for folks on this channel.
Everyone has their own criteria. Consistency at the line and low maintenance are important to us. The Firebird failed to get out of the hole in our very first race. But rather than count it as a ‘win’, we left it out of this video entirely…
@@TeslaPlaidChannel Yes. I have no criterias in cars joining drag races.
But yeah, each to their own.
It is a bonus that one can just drive home without prepping and pulling the car on a trailer.
Those are Not cars that Tesla/Andrew is racing, they are purpose built machines to go fast for 1320 ft. or less Nothing else. can't drive 'em to work, shopping etc. no one burns out and revs to 5k to take off at a traffic light. shows how Good Tesla really is.
I do
u couldn't be any more wrong. There are cars faster than trans Am that can drive all over and are often daily driven buy a lot of guys. Teslas are cool, but there is no substitute for the sound of a combustion engine.
All it shows is how much less science is in an EV.
No physics in suspension. It's advantage there is its heavy.
That heavy requires a higher torque engine just to make it go- same as the drag car its speed you don't need but is a requiree by product that would be better if you didn't have it and instead was used to increase range. Every advantage the EV has is because it requires less science.
@randallsavage3795 its more than just the noise. There's so much more science in a drag car. Guys aren't going to sit around the shop talking about how many times the wrapped a wire around a stick.
@batcivic brother I think U misunderstood my comment. please re-read it.
Finally a really contender ,this are the videos i like to watch a gas car beatting those electrics
These are the harder videos to make since the Plaid is faster than 95% of the cars at this track on many nights. (And on some nights, like last night, we were the fastest car on the property.) But after beating over 1000 gas cars in our Teslas (mostly Hellcats, Corvettes, Camaros, Mustangs, and trailered ‘60s muscle cars), we hate to be repetitive. We will sit for hours without making runs until we find a worthy competitor. (Last night we gave up and went home without a single race instead of picking on the 11-sec street cars that thought they were “fast”.)
It's pretty amazing what it takes to beat a POS that you can just buy at the dealer and race.
It’s a bigger insult to the 99% of cars that got destroyed by it 😃
First!
Always find it funny with "gutted tesla plaid"... not even close to being gutted iirk you took out the rear carpet... ;)
Rear seats, heavy sound deadening material, everything in the frunk, carpet, mats, trim. About 170 pounds. Tesla Service says the car is no longer safe to drive in the rain. But hey, you are the expert! How many pounds did you take out of your Tesla Plaid? 🤣
@@TeslaPlaidChannel 170lbs from ~4800lb car is not much. That's less than 1% of the total weight. Good on ya' though. I took about 4800lbs out of it because I don't have one and never will. Still like the channel regardless.
170/4800 = 3.5%. Drag racers know that every 100 pounds is worth about a tenth of a second. We went from 9.29 the weekend before to 9.15 after removing the weight. That’s 1.4 tenths better from 170 pounds. Facts.
You two guys are millionaires $130,000 Tesla and $200,000 firebird 😃
That was the Plaid’s price two years ago but they have gotten a bit cheaper, Used ones can be found for about $90k now, or about the price of a well-equipped C8 or Redeye.
As for how much Billy has invested in his Firebird, I couldn’t say, but viewers should take into account that nice trailer and truck as well, since the car is not driven to the track 👍
EV?? 😉 no Thanks!
No…thank YOU for not getting one! 👍 (We prefer to be to only EV at the dragstrip, and on most nights we are)
You people need help the Plaid has 3 electrical engines the gas car only one what part don't you get to the math
Ha! A one-cylinder engine (in a go cart or lawn mower) is an engine! This Firebird has EIGHT OF THOSE! Which part of that math don’t you get? Someone needs help alright…
@@TeslaPlaidChannel give me a break a street car has 4,6,8 cylinder engine and highest HP is 700 because government controls gas cars and On D Gas beat a Plaid with no problem and so did a gocart
@SamuelGonzalez-pn8yn Every real drag racer knows: There’s always something faster
I truly enjoy your videos and appreciate your accolades on the other Racers but you making believe your racing is ridiculous,You won? Really? Racing in that plaid? you have about Zero as far as maintenance tuning and breakdowns and set up, all the things that make the difference between the two people that line up, Not just throwing money at something...
So, just like all the Demons and most Hellcats at the the track? And then there’s the GT500s and late model Vettes, which even when the run 9s, the owners admit that they never turned a single wrench (because they had a tuner do all the work, just like the Forza-tuned Stage 2 Demon we recently raced).
Just because someone *can* make modifications doesn’t mean that these owners “poured blood sweat and tears” into them as so many viewers assume.
And as many drivers of built big blocks have said recently (like John in the Orange El Camino and Claudio in the big tire ‘68 Camaro), “we all have two pedals and a steering wheel”, and since they mostly run Powerglides, their car only has one (automatic or semi-manual) shift for the entire race.
This turbo Firebird of course is the real deal, which we can appreciate after all the years we spent building engines in our three Camaros (and nitrous foxbody).
Turbo ls all the way,old style pushrod v8 with turbo beats any new age crap battery powered piece of crap tesla
…except that we beat 90% of the turbos we race, including the trailered ones, the twins, pretty much all of them except this dedicated race car on big slicks 😃
So by *your* logic, 90% of Turbos are “WORSE than a piece of crap”, because we continue to beat them repeatedly…

And a Turbo Foxbody this past week: czcams.com/video/GVmdx-VlsWg/video.html

EV = motorsport dead
Big Daddy Don Garlit's disagrees with you, and he knows 100% more about drag racing than you do 🤣
