That almost makes me want to cry. Some of the best sounding and performing racing engines of all time! I came of age as a fan during CART's heydey, and I will always have fond memories. Here's to hoping Indycar racing can regain some of it's former glory.

I was at Sonoma 2 years ago when Ganassi was testing a guy the Thursday before the race in open practice. There were Historic F-1 cars (non-turbo), some Formula Fords and an SCCA F/A Formula Atlantic. The F1 and Atlantics were almost as fast as the Target car, especially off the last hairpin turn and up the hill. You could totally tell they are OVAL cars.
@chipattack911 It was by tenths of a second that Helio a tiny bit faster. I was there. Gil DeFerrans time was 1:07.969. Helio's was 01:07.248. The LMP-2 car had at least 100 less horse power and a 100-200 lbs more. That is weak to me.
The time for fighting over open wheel racing is over now dude....as much as we'll all dearly miss the CART days and pre split indycar days...it is time to move on...The worst thing that could happen to open wheel is for people to dig their heels in and give up on the IRL because it's not nearly as good as CART was back in the 90's...everybody should support our only open wheel series and hope and prey it will one day resemble the pre split days of the late 80's and early 90's.
I hope there is a visionary that will bring back a decent Car and drivers to IRL, before it disappears. Sad fact, the young generations are growing up thinking that the new IRL is the top of the world, I hope the have a smart father that explains and shows them what existed back in the day, and that the current IRL in reality, doesn't exist in the racing world, not even close...., the only thing that brings some "B" drivers that are world class are the green bucks....
The IRl cars are such a joke. They did a double header with ALMS and could NOT go any faster than an LMP-2 car at Mid Ohio. LMP-2s have at least 100-200 more lbs and about 50-100 LESS hp. Open wheel is dead.....

What you hear is not the turbo, it whistles, at those peak RPM you hear the exhaust!

This was the peak of development for American open wheel cars. 22 years later and the current spec cars are shit compared to these. Sad.
