Franco’s - Best FISH & CHIPS? We Try The Chips Shops Of Porthcawl (Chippy 4)

- We’re on Porthcawl chip shop number 4 and it’s the turn of Franco's Traditional Fish & Chips, New Road, Porthcawl.
You can find Franco’s by the zebra crossing opposite Griffin Park.
As per usual it’s a portion of fish and chips (cod) and an Irish curry sauce to dip the chips in.
Franco’s does have a restaurant section which was closed during our visit.
You can choose between small or large chips and a small or large boneless cod. We went for a large portion of chips and a small portion of cod.
Just to point out all the comments are our own and we do not have a connection with any of the chip shops. It just a bit of fun and an excuse for stuffing our faces with chips!

Have tried them all. One large fish and one portion of chips fine for two. The best in Porthcawl by far!!

I find a lot of fish and chip shops put the salt and vinegar on for you now, ( and that was before this virus came along ) where as before they would let the customer do it for themselves, so they tend more often than not to put very little on unless you ask for a bit more; and like you mentioned I think that makes a difference. That was a rare sunny day so we made the most of it, rain and wind the day after.

Now we are allowed to travel locally (5-mile rule) I was able to go to Porthcawl on Sunday.
Too cold for Fish and Chips for me, I'm not as dedicated as you. But I was surprised and rather disappointed not to see a
"AS SEEN ON FLY DRIVE EXPLORE" Or "APPROVED BY MARCUS AND MEL"
sign on any of the Chip Shop windows!
That's an idea, we could take over from TripAdvisor

Francos is defo the best tried them all everything cooked fresh Fish,battered Rissole and Southern Fried Chicken strips are amazing. Always good portions to!!
It was our first visit, very nice too.
Chips2go opposite the buccaneer pub just before the hi tide is worth a try:)
It's seasonal so closed at the moment, we may try it in the summer.

They've had slim pickings during lockdown due to the lack of people. Unfortunately, we didn't leave them any scraps either.
👍👍 The fish & Chips looked so good, not forgetting the curry sauce.
Unfortunately have to wait a bit longer to try them due to only being able to stay local.
They all look good take aways but I think it looks like Franco's has come out on top so far. 🙂
I think we'll have to do the same as you and try a different one on each visit to Porthcawl. 🤩👍 🙂
It was good but you can't go wrong with any of the 4 we've tried so far, the differences come down to personal taste. Yes, you should definitely try your own fish and chip challenge when allowed to travel again, hopefully not too long away.

Thanks. It wasn't raining but the weather definitely made up for it the next day. Rain and gales. In Porthcawl, you have to grab the nice days when you can.

You're absolutely right. Finnegans are extortionate and far from the best in my opinion.
Yes I agree fish and chips now are quite dear, mostly only for a treat now.
It's not too bad as a lot have offers on in the week on things like chips, pies and sausages. It's when you start adding the cod the price goes up.
Is cod less available? It was very affordable when I had it years ago..

There no longer have any chip shops, I go to the Piccolo bar on the seafront for coffee which they still run.

Not sure someone who does not eat the cod can judge only the French fries, excuse me, CHIPS when it is a fish and chips contest. But enjoy their videos all the same!👍
Thanks. I take it as you referred to fries you are not from Wales. It's not all about the fish. You may not have yet experienced the true wonder and magnificence of chips dipped in curry sauce.

When we come there that where we go the Chinese curry sauce is amazing
