- It’s time for Finnegan’s Fish and Chips in Porthcawl. Chips Shop number 5 in our search for the best fish and chips (and curry sauce) in Porthcawl, South Wales.
Finnegans have two chip shops in Porthcawl, a takeaway and restaurant in Well Street near the town centre and the one we try on Station Hill. The actual address is 16 New Road Porthcawl.
Finnegans currently have six chip shops around South Wales.
As usual with all the Fish and Chips shops we visit we order the same thing. Fish and Chips (cod) and a curry sauce, Irish curry if it’s available. Nothing like chips and curry sauce.
We have been visiting the chip shops of Porthcawl in no particular order. These are our personal opinions and have no connection with any of the chippies. Also, we comment on the food as we find it on the day.

Yes! I live in Australia now, but was hoping you'd do this one. It was the chip shop we’d go to late at night, after drinking copious amounts in the Knights Arms, Pier Hotel and the Marine Bar, back in the early eighties, before catching the last bus back to Bridgend, from outside the Stoneleigh. It was a long walk home if you timed it wrong! Great videos Marcus, many happy memories of my youth watching your work. Thank you..
Thanks. That Station Hill chippy has been there for years, I think it used to be called Claude's back in the day. The Knights Arms is just an empty shell now with no roof.
It’s mad that this is becoming the highlight of a 24 year old guys week while at uni, my girlfriend is from Porthcawl and while we’re both in Nottingham we watch them together and she gives her opinion! Love this sh*t!

When you mentioned a glass of wine with your fish and chips at finnegans restaurant I thought of all the times the wife and I have had fish & chips the odd glass of wine for her and a couple of bottles of beer for me at finnegans, really looking forward to doing it again , fingers crossed for this year 🤞
Hopefully, it won't be too long before we can have some chips indoors with a glass of wine or two.
I loved the open sequence - it put me in mind of the film 2001 - A Space Oddessey, the the chip is symbolic of the enigmatic black monolith. The chip has a deeper meaning beyond being a simple slice of fried potato. It symbolises man's quest for perfection and joy. All which can be had for a few pounds in sunny Porthcawl.
Yep, I was thinking what if Stanley Kubrick had chips. There's definitely more to the humble chip.
Guys, the Evans mince pie is awesome. I’ve never had a bad meal from these and I love it. Only downside for me personally is the chips are not brown enough, but that’s personal opinion. But stunning food.
About 50 years ago me my brother and sister used to get fish and chips, but one of us used to get the chips from one shop while the other got the fish from another, we used to do it that way because the chips were better from one chip ship and the fish was better test from the other.

We love your videos. Thank you. This is a great idea to review the chippies. It’s really good watching such a lovely couple thank you. I must say though that in this day and age of us needing to be more conscious of caring for our world and our food supply, I do think sustainability and environment ought to be a consideration in the criteria if possible. I do not work for or know anyone at any branch of Finnegans ( as far as I know) but the fish they buy are from sustainability areas where discard is illegal. This means everything that is caught has to be landed and sold, and anything the vessel should not have caught does not profit the fishing vessels, in other words trying to allow smaller fish to grow and breed and help the worlds fish stocks which nearly collapsed some years ago. I have read Finnegans are to apply for a certificate with the Marine Stewardship Council which works with conservation bodies to protect the environment and fish stocks. This is more important than friendly staff, price, portions and taste I would say. So if we get fish and chips in Porthcawl we get them from this shop, but as you see they are friendly servers, tasty food and well, as with many things, you get what you pay for. Your videos are so brilliant. Thank you so much.

The Finnigans you bought from this week,is it around the corner from Beatles and up the street towards the RAF Club,haven’t been there.Been to Finnigans just off the seafront,sat down in there.The sit down ones are naturally more expensive.Judging by your experiences these not much to choose between any of them,they’re all good value.Great video very enjoyable,as always.
Yes, that's the one around the corner from Beales. Their shop with the restaurant near the seafront has been closed during the lockdown but it opened for takeaway this week.
We often go to the restaurant when it's open as it's close to our house. (You can have a beer with your chips!)

We do like Beales and the Irish curry sauce we had was good but controversially, I don't like the fruity one. No raisins for me.

Yep, from this weekend we can travel within Wales although not much is open when you get there.

It’s true about the price for the cod. I’m not even sure if I could get cod around here. Usually it’s haddock, but this is a completely different part of the world.
Thanks, it is a nice little park, especially in the summer. A few years ago there was talk of getting rid of it but luckily that never happened.

I have to agree I would much prefer to put my own salt & vinegar on my chips etc, but I notice they had even started putting it on themselves quite a while before this virus came about, maybe fish shops thought it might save them some money if they done it rather than the customers. Have to say I much prefer the fruity curry sauces. Love from Gwent, South Wales. 👍
Hi, I still remember the days when you put your own salt and vinegar on and also still had it wrapped in proper newspaper. I really sound like an old man now!

Chips and their smell must be the hardest thing to resist.
Another consideration when buying fish & chips is the fat that is used to fry it in.
Beef dripping is thought by true connoisseurs of the chip as being the best frying medium but this probably only applies to Yorkshire. Most chippies tend to favour a vegetable oil, typically sunflower seed oil.#
Additionally, it would be nice to know which variety of spud they are using.
All the ones around here are veggie and not beef, none of them so far had any taste of oil or grease.

The best fish and chips I’ve had in the eighties was from a mobile chip van. I was on a medical training course at long Moore camp and the and fish and chips was tasty as heck. As far as I can remember it was in 1982 and even now in 2021i remember them fondly

Yep agree, it is slightly pricey but we think the quality is very good.
we have a finnegans fish bar on Barry island to.
Is it the same Finnegans as this company have 6 between Swansea and Bridgend? Anyway, now we can travel again we hope to take a trip to Barry in the next few weeks.
@@flydriveexplore I'm not sure. It opened up about 2 years ago. right next door to the finngans Inn. The shop front is the same colour as the one in porthcawl so it's possible. Any place you need to find round here mate give me a shout.
@@gittinsoutdooradventures5267 I used to work in Penarth and windsurf down Cold Knap quite a lot, a few years ago but haven't been there for at least 5 years. Will definitely take a trip over the next few weeks.

I'd be attracted by that smell!

This was the 5th with one more permanent chip shop left. There is one up in West Park near Rest Bay which we haven't been to.

Lush fish shops but I do love beale’s it’s my favourite I always eat there when I go to porthcawl, I’m from Cardiff and we can travel everywhere now in wales is anything open up Porthcawl? I’m going to trecco bay in the summer with my girlfriend and daughter!!
Thanks for watching. Well the chip shops are open and most of the cafes are open for takeaways. Hopefully, most of the shops will be open soon.
i just had a look at rest bay as im off down tomorrow with the dog and wife and it doesnt open till 4pm !!!!!! im gutted as its looks a tidy chippy and didnt even know about till u mentioned it
I didn't know it wasn't open earlier as I've seen their board out on Fulmar Road quite early in the day

No fleet or market. There are a few boats in the harbour who fish commercially.
Where you going to sit this time as rest bay if far from Griffin park
We may go up to Rest Bay itself, I think we've seen enough of Griffin park.
Best fish and chips?
That's easy, Black Country Museum, Dudley.
Another one for our list.
Done the old fashioned way, beef dripping rather than oil. Nothing else either except for pickled onions.
And get there early otherwise liable for a long wait in the long line that develops as soon as it opens.
The chips looked greasy.Not very appetising.
They actually weren't greasy, as with all the chip shops we tried we had to wait as they were cooked fresh.
