I agree with the single. I’m so glad for your videos that helped me build ours. Getting the dealer to reprogram was the most difficult. Two dealerships in I just showed them your video! With singling the truck, I was able to add more storage boxes under for all my tools. It’s also less maintenance as far as tires as well as toll roads you pay per axle. Minimal but it adds up over time. Once again, can’t thank you enough. Hopefully in the next 5 years I’ll sell mine and I’ll have you build me one to support all the help you’ve done for the community. Glad to have you back making more videos!

Gregg, I really like how you have 'transformed' Rudy to a single axle and longer bed to accomodate a vehicle loaded from the back. The conversion is tastefully done and very practical without being 'overdone'. Put the money where you get the biggest bang for our hard-earned dollar, that works for me!
Plus, I really like the overall look of the 730 with the mid-rise sleeper. It has MY vote!

Those are some amazing MPG numbers. My '19 Ram dually can barely squeak 10 MPG pulling at 65 MPH, and driving very conservatively.

Nothing is too small. We are really practiced at doing custom graphics. You and I setup a zoom conference call, and I can share my desktop and graphics program with you. We take a high quality side view picture of the RVHauler, and we can mock-up stripes, angles, colors, and even place your 5th wheel behind the rig to make sure the lines and graphics are complimentary when put together.

Hey Greg, great videos.....how about a video on the rest of the mods required like exhaust [if it has stack{s} fuel filler relocating etc as everything wont be as one would expect....this will help explain to people the potential cost involved in a conversion as the little simple things get missed when it comes to cost, planning and so on.

Greg, really enjoyed the recent videos looking at Rudy and loading from the rear. I called you recently asking questions about putting a Jeep on the back lengthwise. Big 👍 up Gregg. I really like the ramp storage set up being close to the ground. You need to add short mud flaps to the front of the rear axle. Personally I would have kept the rear corners of the bed slightly angled. I thought about that style of rail you have fastened to the bed but using mine as a patio I’m concerned about that being a tripping hazard. That rear camera has an unbelievable picture quality. What are the rear end gears in the truck? I get so encouraged by the mpg numbers you get, knowing I won’t even be towing a trailer. Thanks again. Kc

Hey Red Dawg! The hitch positioning is still well within engineering and safe specifications. The weight capacities haven't changed - with this particular model we can still tow a trailer that weighs up to 30,000 lbs, and a downward pin weight of up to 7,000 lbs.

My concern with all the parts shortages is that a Volvo will become too expensive to fix IF you can even gets the needed parts.

Hiya Road Tripper. I always setup the beds carefully so we have 56 inches of space between the back of the vehicle, and the hitch pin location. That alllows us the ability to jack-knife your trailer over 90 degrees without risk of coming in contact with the car in this case.

I agree, these units are quite effective boondocking units, and they are mini-motorhomes themselves. Many of my clients tow their 5th wheels, setup home base somewhere, and take just the RVHauler on overnight trips into some of the more remote locations. You are a 30 foot motorhome!

I agree a 24K trailer is pushing the capabilities of a 1 ton DRW, and there is no question an HDT is the absolute best when it comes to towing and stopping, but an MDT like an M2 106 or 112 seems more than sufficient for a 24K 5er, with a bit more maneuverability around the campsite. What are your thoughts?

Can't at all argue your MDT specs are sufficient. You are right.
I gently suggest to folks that sometimes we might also want to consider comfort factors, cool factors and excess capacity factors. If your sole objective is to be safe, both solutions meet the mission profile.
Sometimes people want to take extra toys along (perhaps a Jeep).
Sometimes we do things just because it makes us happy. Personally my big HDT Rvhaulers make me happy. The cool factor!

Have you ever considered using the auto hauler "low boy" type truck to convert into a RV Hauler? They use the smaller diameter wheels and tires to allow a vehicle to be loaded on top of the truck. Just curious. Thanks for your great videos.

Hello Dirk,
No commercial drivers license is needed. Just a standards drivers license and an air brake course.
Because we remove one rear axle (we call it singling), and because we re-title all my RVHaulers into motorhomes, you essentially need the same licence required to operate an air-brake equipped diesel pusher motorhome!

My ? for you Greg is because the smart cars are pretty much disappeared, like you had said in the video, & you made the deck longer to accommodate a longer car, does that now restrict the length of a 5th wheel? I remember you talking about length restrictions awhile back in your other videos, so was curious how long of a 5th wheel you could pull with say “Rudy”? Thanks & keep posting the great videos.

If we look back over the last 12 years of us building these RVHaulers, the grand total of customers that are at or under 65 is Two (2). Yes, every other build is over. I am glad you are aware of the formality, but most of us are way over, and accept the length issue. With a rig like Rudy, you would have to tow a 5th wheel in the 33 foot range to be short.

Also let me ask you this if I got a day cab and put a flat bed on the semi truck and put a generator and a air compressor on the back and use the rest of the bed for camping equipment and pull a bumper pull camper trailer
We can certainly make a day-cab for you. It sure keeps the overall length under control, and keeps us "nimble" in the campground.

Two axles means more surface area thus less pressure on the contact patches for a given weight(force). So single axle is better.

I wonder is it possible to give up some of the cab in order to fit a longer car on the bed. By that I mean maybe the cab stops after where the microwave is. Personally I couldn't see sleeping in the cab that much. Sure it would be nice and if you have grand kids and whatnot I can certainly see why that would be a huge benefit. Me personally just having a microwave and frig in the cab with me would be more than enough to make me comfortable. Maybe some of you that have these set ups could tell me I'm wrong and you sleep in the cab all the time but I would think if you're hauling an rv behind you that you'd sleep in that. Maybe there are circumstances I'm not aware of.
Is that something that is even possible/advisable? Cut down the cab length thus giving that length to the bed and being able to put a mid or full sedan or something up there. Like you said the smart cars are going away.

I completely follow your idea. Yes, we can go with a much shorter sleeper option, still have the creature comforts you are looking for, and shorten the rig by a few feet.
Some of my customers are drawn to the idea of having what is essentially a mini motorhome with them. They setup their large 5th wheel home-base somewhere, and use the RVHauler as a exploration vehicle. You can get into the little campsites that a 5th wheel won't fit. You can comfortably do overnight trips with just the 30 foot RVHauler and get into those remote little sites.

Can they be adapted for hand controls for people that have made it because of their substability I can walk that sometimes my feet do not quick be quick enough to go from break to accelerator so I am licensed to drive with hand controls

Knowing that custom fab work costs big money, I’m wondering what kind of custom work to the sleeper can be done? What I would love to see is the sleeper converted to family seating, like 3 captains chairs instead of the sleeper or work station.

@@rvhaulers ever consider converting a retired custom fire truck? So many get retired with incredibly low miles and custom cabs are built with rollover protection among other safety features.
Does the hitch distance behind the rear axle affect the pin weight capacity?
Hi Mark,
The configuration and engineering allows for up to 7000 lbs of pin weight. Most 5th wheels are less than that, so we are pretty well within specs.

Can a 2 door Wrangler fit on that bed with the New Horizon Hooked up? Thinking about the DRV pins and NH pins being tucked up under the front caps away.
Hi Jim, Thanks for the question. This particular bed was designed to accommodate a vehicle up to 150 inches long. A two door Wrangler is a bit longer at 165 inches. (the Fiat you see loaded is 144 inches) Also note there are some small differences in Jeep lengths between model years. We will build the bed to accommodate what you want to take with you!

Hello Ken,
All the RVHaulers that leave my yard are titled as motorhomes. All the RVHaulers that leave my yard are auto shift transmissions. No clutch - all that is necessary is to put it into drive and go. They are extremely easy to operate, and are not intimidating. Driver training and orientation is included in all my RVHauler sales.
Regarding license and endorsement - it depends on your home state or province. Because we convert most of our RVHaulers into a single rear axle, the only operator license required is a standard license (like you need for your car, van, or pickup), plus sometimes you have to take the air-brake endorsement course. Some locations require more, some less, but 90% of the time, you get to stay with your standard drivers license.

I've been thinking about an HDT for a while. I'd like to be able to bring my malibu with us, or when we leave it behind, I'd like to put my Side by Side there. However, I wanna stay as short as possible. My 5th wheel is 43 feet long.
I understand there are certain requirements so that you don't need a CDL to drive the truck, so removing the sleeper is probably a no-no. However, I've always wondered if we could cut into the under part of the sleeper so the front of the car could pull up farther, leaving the overall length of the truck shorter. That would still leave you some space over the hood of the car to add a bed and whatever else was needed to keep you legal.

Everything I do always conforms to DOT and safety standards. I can't compromise and cut away portions of the sleeper. The sleeper system is engineered to protect you in the event of an accident or roll over.
If we want to take the toys on the bed, we are going to be unapologetically looooong. Darn, I wish I had some new-fangled tape measure that made my RVHaulers shorter. I haven't figured out a way to break the laws of physics quite yet.

Do your haulers come standard with an APU or is it an option? When you buy a used truck with an APU do you remove it?

New APUS are generally a $9,000 to $13,000 option. Because of the value, it is rare that an owner will sell a truck and let it go with it. They tend to spend a few thousand dollars to move it into their new truck. Sometimes we are lucky, and an owner might be retiring from the road, and will let the APU go with it.

I know that costs always vary, but assuming you could get a Volvo 730 in the $30-50K (USD) range, what would a setup run like you have for Rudy, but would fit a 2 door Jeep? How much is it to single axle a truck? For your US customers, is it easier for us to bring you a truck or buy from you?

Hi Gregg. Do you only customize the 18 wheelers? Have you ever done a new Chevy 6500 truck? I have a 36' Montana to pull and i would like to put a 2 door jeep on the bed of the truck. Hi David. Yes we can reconfigure the rear area with air-ride captains chairs! Honestly you can only fit three of the air ride seats. If you really need 4 passengers we have to put in a passenger jack-knife sofa.

Question #1) The Chevy Spark says it is 144 Inches also, if the ground clearance is similar to the Fiat??? No matter what used Fiat 500Ms & Chevy Sparks are in short supply like everything else these days. Question #2) What are the exterior surfaces of the HDT hoods built with, metal or fiberglass? We had hail 13 times this past summer at our south-central Colorado campground and it was a full-time job throwing on the old blanket to the pickup truck every day at 2 -3 PM and looking a little paranoid. The previous year we received $6,300 US in hail damage to our F-150, so we are always looking for tips and tricks. Our RV had less than $200 damage, it would have been zero if I had the Dometic Sea Breeze cover already installed over our fan vent. We suspect that an HDT is set up for a little more hail resistance to the stuff nickel size and under, but the hard golf ball size wasn't so easy on our F-150 with aluminum panels, LOL. The sides had 5% of the damage to our hood, roof, and aluminum bed cover. The jeep generally just needs a good hood blanket for the smaller stuff as the roof and fenders are pretty resistant. Any commentary on experience with the Volvo trucks regard hail concerns or preparations would be appreciated. Being full-timers since 2008 means we have seen the real world a few times and now that we are age 60 we want to design something to bring us a little less stress every time we see a cloud form, LOL. The spark actually has MORE ground clearance. Loading is a low stress endeavor!
The entire Volvo hood is fiberglass. Here in Calgary we have the same wicked hail storms in the summer/fall. I have had our personal vehicles dinged up, and the trucks have always survived without damage. They were in the same yard, same storm, and zero hail damage.

Does a big rig like this require any special driver’s license? I live in the Boston area and drive busses for a living. So I have what we call a Class B CDL with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsements. This level of License does not include Semi Truck and Trailer configuration which is considered Class A. So would I have to upgrade my License?

Pacific N>W> we have snow how do you get a set of chains on that with fender. Singles normally city work. DOT chains REQ on 10,ooo lbs GVW. Oregon chain laws.
No problem. I have an adjustable valve in the system that allows you to open that fender gap a bit more to make it easier to install chains. If my customer plans to travel in the snow, I setup the rig to have enough of a gap to get your arms (including a thick jacket) inbetween there. In 5 minutes, I can tweak Rudy to allow this. We have tested it already, and even with this taller opening, we still have tons of clearance when loading the Fiat.

Hi Greg, we tow a 39 foot Keystone Everest weighing about 12,000 lbs wet with a 2008 F 450 crew cab 2 wheel drive dually. Our dream is to be able to take our approximate 13 foot long Landrover LR4 on our RV trips; so an HDT seems to be the answer. We would like to have a setup like Rudy and piggyback the LR4 on the flatbed; is this doable? Not interested in a Volvo however a Western Star or an International Lonestar have potential. I'm really interested in getting a hauler in the next three to five years when I retire. One of my big concerns is that I'm 6' 10" tall and wide with a 58" waist. I find fitting in most vehicles very difficult. In fact, I currently have a 2000 Dodge Ram 3500 and choose to replace the engine and transmission along with repairing many other components instead of buying something newer simply because I do not fit in the newer trucks. Could I fit in an HDT or could it be modified so I could fit,. Also, I have knee issues. So while I could probably still climb up into the cab today, I may not be able to do so in the future. Are they options for lifts or some other way to get in that would be easier than the two giant steps on the side? It would also be important to me to be able to sleep in it on short overnight trips but the stock bed would be too short. Are they any options to either reconfigure the current cab or maybe even add a slide out to make more room? If I could get an HDT that met my needs in the $100 - $150K range (closer too the lower end being better), an HDT might be an option for me.
you want to look at peterbilt or kenworth, depending on the truck model both of those brands have several steps. if it's not standard,it's an option, both of those brands have tons of options factory and after market and the dealer will happily show you after market stuff and install it for you. and you can extend the sleeper area in length and have the bed turned length wise, but then you would have to elongate the wheelbase more if you want a car/toy on the back. extending the sleeper like that would be a custom shop deal, it's very common and you can find places all over the country that will do it, but it will cost a fair bit.
bit surprised you can't fit into newer pickups, the cabs are bigger than they have ever been. unless you meant headroom, not sure if that has changed.

The leg room and head room in the seated position is more than ample. I have many customers that are larger, and we have no issues in the seating positions. I also have upgraded the seats for folks to really accommodate taller and larger folks. I can get you sitting in the lap[ of an angel (sort of).
For making the climb up and down easier, I have a step upgrade that looks quite "factory" and doubles the number of steps. The distance from step to step becomes quite similar to steps in your home - about 7 to 8 inch risers.
The Volvo model 780 and 730 actually have a bit longer lower bed (the super single), PLUS there is an additional foot space (a void) on the passenger side BEYOND the edge of the bed that allow taller folks to get 7 feet of length.

What's the average fuel mpg for a hdrv I drive a 2016 mack Hauling c&d trash about 80k lbs and every day I put 60'65 gallons of fuel into the tank

Personally, I tow a 29,000 lb 5th wheel RV, and load up my RVHauler with another 4,000 lbs of car and tools and toys. RVHauler and trailer add up to 54,000 lbs. Driving reasonably around 62 MPH - 65 MPH I get in the 9-10 MPG range.

@@rvhaulers I love your channel and what you do the wife had a stroke last February and she is doing better but it put a wrench into our plans she's able to retire in 3 years and I'm about 2 years after she does we may have to go a different route because she has a hard time getting around sometimes but in February we are going to meet with Dave and Karen watts and see how they have their rv set up and if the wife feels comfortable getting in and out of it and go from there you do a wonderful job and a lot of information about how to get your rv set up what is your thought on the m2 112

why are they called "chicken lights"?

I dont think there is a definitive historical reference.
There are many theories about how the term came about, but one theory suggests it has its roots in chicken theft. Truck drivers were often victims of chicken thieves in the early 1900s, so they added lanterns to their trucks to deter thievery.
Anyone else have some history knowledge of this question?

Greg, why not put a large enough tank somewhere on the truck so you can empty your tanks with a small pump which will pump from the trailer to the truck tank and then you drive your truck over to the dump site and dump your tank instead of breaking camp and hauling your trailer over to dump the tank . Also witht the world and climate change happening where do you see the rv industry going in the future .

Why are most rv haulers volvo's

Traditionally, Volvos were considered attractive for our purposes because of the quiet, and spacious interiors. The ishift transmissions were also superior. We are seeing more and more Kenworths these days. KW is now catching the attention of our RVHauler clients.
