  • Are you considering ordering a NEW factory order Heavy Duty Truck (HDT) to use as a personally owned RV? If you order through RVHaulers, we re-title all our RVHaulers as motorhomes, and we do not charge any US Federal Excise Tax (FET).
    This saves you 12% on the purchase price!
    On a very well equipped factory order RVHauler, this amounts to approximately $17,000 in savings!
    NOTE - I cannot help commercial owners avoid this tax. This only applies to trucks we convert into RV use, and are for personal use. These units are titled as MOTORHOMES - and the titles clearly state they are for "passenger use" and are officially RV motorhomes.

      It is always fun to line "Gregg's garden gnomes" in the yard. That is what my wife Kerry calls them. All different colors, sizes and shapes. Gregg is always moving the garden gnomes around.

    I used to work for a Carhauler Company that had brand new trailers made and they took off Axles off their old rusted trailers and refurbished the axles and had them installed on the new trailers to avoid paying the FET. It save them about $10,000 on each trailer.

    Wow I guess you can order semis however you want. They just don’t make those often because who wants a single sleeper for commercial use. There is some chip companies I have seen run singles. Maybe other light load companies. Interesting stuff though

    Great information. Thank you. Saving that kind of money would not hurt my feelings at all. Question: I am a resident of Georgia (USA). If I purchase a big rig motorhome from Gregg's RV Haulers in Alberta, do I face any expenses (taxes or otherwise) for purchasing the big rig in Canada and bringing it home to my back yard in Georgia. I understand that the federal excise tax does not apply to motorhome purchases, but are there any sales taxes, export taxes, or any other "hidden" taxes or fees? No one wants to be surprised. 🙂 Thanks, again. Lou from Georgia.

      There are no additional taxes or duties required to get it home.

      @@rvhaulers Isn't he going to be required to pay "Sales Tax" in Georgia in order to get local licensing ? I sold my pickup (in OR.) to a person in another state (Wa.) . He had to pay sales tax in order to get Washington license plates & registration.

      Hi Herb - good point of clarification. There are no taxes and duties between my yard and yours. Ie no taxes or fees at the border. HOWEVER - we don't circumnavigate the state sales tax. Yes - anything you purchase out of state and bring home has sales tax when you title it.

      @@rvhaulers -- No question about paying Georgia taxes. I bought a new motorhome direct from the manufacturer in 2016 and picked it up at the plant in Elkhart, IN. When I went to my local Georgia tag office, I had to pay a 6.5% (now 7%) Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) on the value of the motorhome. My new tag was right at $10,000. The lady behind the window was so shocked, she had to write down the tax amount on a piece of paper for me. She couldn't say the number out loud. 🙂

    What are the operator licensing requirements for these RVs?
    Is a CDL needed?

    • @rvhaulers
      @rvhaulers  Před rokem +1

      Hi Scott - thanks for the question. All my RVHaulers are titled as motorhomes. They are NOT commerical trucks. The titles read "motorhome" and "passenger use" . The word "truck" doesn't even appear.
      The operator license you need is the same as you would need for an air-brake equipped motorhome.

      For some reason politicians think breaking with air and breaking with liquid are different, but it doesn't actually matter to the driver as long as the vehicle stops when they are applied.

    • @badgerpa9
      @badgerpa9 Před rokem +1

      FYI it goes by your state laws as it is a motorhome not commercial. CDL is commercial drivers license. Most every state has and exemption for motor homes that allows you to drive with a normal class license. Some require a state license for the size like Texas some for airbrake like california. Many people license the vehicle and change their drivers license to South Dakota which has a motor home exemption and you do not have yearly inspections like Texas and other states. South Dakota, Florida and Texas are the 3 big states people change to for tax breaks also if they full time in the rig. A call to your state DOT for vehicle license and drivers license is a good step.

    I'm assuming that this would either prevent ever reselling it to a commercial trucker, or require the FET to be paid at that time to "convert" it back to a commercial motor vehicle. Any idea which?
    I realize that its best use/value might be to keep reselling it as an RV, but if that market ever dries up or gets eliminated by changes in rules/laws, and not grandfathered, it could impact resale value or even turn it into an expensive paperweight until the paperwork/tax issue is resolved to let it be sold as a CMV.

      Interesting question. I personally don't have the experience to answer this question. My clients have never wanted to re-purpose the RVHauler back to commercial duty. It is worth more as an RVHauler than a Commercial truck
      BUT - your question is very valid. I just don't know the answer - Does anyone out there know the answer and can help us?

      The RV haulers Greg sells ARE NOT an RV. They are not exempt. You pay FET when you register it and have it inspected. Greg is nnot telling the truth.

    • @badgerpa9

      @@rvhaulers My knowledge is limited but the law does say first retail sale. If an individual sells it as a mobile home you are not a retailer and it is a mobile home. If you sold it to a retailer that changed it to commercial FET would be based on the truck value then. The FET tax on heavy trucks, trailers, and tractors is a 12% tax on the first retail sale as a commercial vehicle over the 33K gross vehicle weight (GVW). There are exemptions on some ancillary equipment for reducing idling. The FET paid on every new tire by the manufacture can be refunded to the first buyer of a new truck as they are paying FET on the entire truck. Some states tax you on the FET for a truck and that could be $600-1000 more sales tax figuring $100K truck, maybe up to $2000 more on a $200K truck depending on the state. When you purchase a new big truck tire you are paying sales tax on the FET that was paid by the manufacture of the tire. IRS Publication 510 offers a comprehensive explanation of federal excise taxes and lists other Publications to read for more information. Form 720 covers idling exemptions. As with all IRS tax information you are on your own and should get the help of a tax professional if you are involved in retail or need to get an answer. You can call the IRS tax hotline for guidance also. I am not a tax advisor and I am not giving tax advice, you need to read or hire a pro.

      EVERY one of my RVHaulers that leave my dealership are titled as RV Motorhomes. These are not commercial trucks. They aren't trucks at all. The titles say "Passenger Use" and "Motorhome" everywhere. The word "truck" does not appear.

    • @badgerpa9

      @@rvhaulers So after owning one for some time and selling it you would have no consideration about someone later selling it retail as a commercial vehicle. The RV haulers are always worth more than a normal commercial truck so I doubt anyone would want to convert to commercial use.
