      I'll answer for him. The Aluminum version has a locked bios, but you CAN replace it with the unlocked bios and have all those settings back, so they're still possible.

      Hi PHAWX. I've recently bricked my GPD Win during a bios update and I managed to unbrick it using a cheap USB bios programmer. I know you are currently busy with the GPD Win 2 prototype but if you are interested, I've posted additional info on Reddit about it. Thanks for the videos!

    I have a tip for you! Watch Tech City's video of optimizing windows 10 for gaming and do everything he does. Watch both tutorials he made from before and after the anniversary update just to be shure. Update Windows 10 to latest version and update the graphics drivers. Set an fps limit to 30fps in every game with vsync and frametiming on. You can install games on a flashdrive and/or sd card for faster read and write speeds of the game. The GPD Win will be a perfect compact gaming PC when you do this.

    FWIW, Memory Scrambling isn't really related to security - it exists to reduce Simultaneous Switching Noise (often discussed under the term Simultaneous Switching Outputs - SSO). There should not be any measurable change in performance with or without scrambling, and although it seems to work for you, it is important to keep scrambling *on* to avoid SSO problems.
    In short, the problem of SSO is that a typical data pattern might involve switching all the data lines on both channels (128 lines total!) from zero to one or vice-versa, which causes a large instantaneous current. Since the power delivery network and chip internals have finite resistance, the supply voltage droops (or ground voltage rises). The net effect is that the electrical margins are reduced. If the margins reduce too much, ones will swap with zeroes or vice-versa, causing bad data to be read/written to RAM.

    thanks Phawx, great video. I just got my win and tweaked my bios settings. No discernable difference other than idle temps are definitely down (no longer warm just on the desktop), probably because of the GPU setting you mentioned for preventing the system from always running at 600mhz. Got a few things running pretty nicely, going to start the windows battle next.

  • @Marc_Wolfe

    Two lanes vs 4 lanes is just the bandwidth available through display port. It's similar to having extra PCIe lanes, except it's only for display bandwidth (and audio when used).

      Just FYI, I did buy a USB-C to Displayport cable and I tried both 2-lane and 4-lane mode in the bios and nothing worked :( I tried on two different monitors with DisplayPort. Windows does make a sound that something is happening, but I can't see anything in device manager so I'm not sure what the issue is really. It could be that my cable is bad or it could be that it's not physically wired on the PCB. Going to need other people to test this out on.

    So I've watched a couple of your videos of the GPD Win so far and what I take away from them is that it's basically a great device for light games like Myst, Strider, Terraria, Transistor, the new Myst sequel, BroForce, FEZ, Deponia, Bleed, The Longest Journey and other games like that. And that it's suitable for emulation as well and really not suited for triple A 3d games.

    Have you tried anything like Game Booster or Razer Cortex to boost gaming performance of your GPDWin? I should be receiving my unit very soon but unfortunately its the 8700 not 8750 although that's what I ordered from Geekbuying.

    • @ThePhawx
      @ThePhawx  Před 7 lety +1

      I wouldn't get too hung up on the 8700 vs the 8750. It still remains to be seen if the 8700 is actually better than the 8750. When more people get units in we'll know for sure.
      As for those game boosting software, I generally avoid them. There are some interesting ones like dynamic resolution changing based on load, but the other game boosting software does settings that I already apply to my Windows machine by default (no hibernation file, customize page file, disable unneeded services, group policy edits.) so they usually hurt performance in my case.

      @MYCRAFTisbest Před 7 lety

      Yeah I figured that part out. I was just asking if you had any ideas to keep CS and have High Performance. I was able to write a batch file that enables the High Performance, but I'm not sure that it's actually worked besides changing the name of the profile.

    • @ThePhawx
      @ThePhawx  Před 7 lety

      Actually I believe you can. Do these steps:
      Change CSenabled to 0, reboot and enable high performance mode. In the Bios, put "Allow High Performance Mode" to enable then go back to windows and put CSenabled to 1 and reboot. You should still have "High Performance mode enabled but CSenabled will be at 1 still. If you move the power profile to balance, you'll have to do these steps over again.

    thanks for this. Is there a way to install windows onto the TF Card?

    • @ThePhawx
      @ThePhawx  Před 7 lety

      It *might* be possible, in the BIOS you can set the TF card from partial install to full install, the only other thing is you'd need the drivers to load during the install process as the TF card won't show the drive during that time.
      I would suspect it wouldn't work, but there is an option in the BIOS, I should give it a try.

      Andy, just out of curiosity, what games are you having problems getting running on windows 10?

    • @clkbateman
      @clkbateman Před 7 lety

      "Red Faction 1"(screen rotates 90 degree, tried everything). and "command and conquer 3 tiberium wars"(wont run)

      I was using windows 10 for a year and then I switched back to 7 because of many reasons. I doubt there are windows 7 drivers for this thing.
      Anyway, have you tried the pure faction community patch?

      Spartan Patten GPD Win is a Windows PC and The XD is an Android system. Choose whichever you prefer to have

    I only get Main, Boot, and Save & Exit tabs in Bios? Any help?

    • @ThePhawx
      @ThePhawx  Před 7 lety

      Verellic The newest bios update from GPD removed these options. Not sure if downgrading is an option.

    • @Verellic
      @Verellic Před 7 lety

      The Phawx I checked my BIOS version and it matches the one u have in the video though? But then again this is one of the most recent Win's that they have shipped. Thats depressing

    • @ThePhawx
      @ThePhawx  Před 7 lety

      Verellic The version will be in a DATE format. Not the version you see at the bottom. I believe this BIOS version is 10/18/2016

    • @Verellic
      @Verellic Před 7 lety

      The Phawx ahhh well shit, even if downgrading the BIOS was a thing I think its too risky, thats a shame. Thanks for letting me know.

    • @Verellic
      @Verellic Před 7 lety +1

      The Phawx Hey! By the way you CAN downgrade, maybe it was a bit risky but it did work following your tutorial. Just thought you would be interested. A few others on the GPD Subreddit also did it and were successful. Keep up the good work.
