My sophomore biology teacher became a FBI agent. Before he left he told us that we wouldn’t ever see him again and that he had to basically drop everybody out of his life except wife and kids and he relocated

The relationship between the CIA and FBI is not portrayed very close to reality, but that relationship would be difficult for someone to understand that is not part of the intelligence community. I work for the U.S. Department of State as a Foreign Service Officer. The salaries are spot on with nobody making great money. If you try to get into it for the money go into something else. What I cannot put a price tag on is the world experience you get.
People outside the government don't realize that pay scales are nearly uniform across the government. Most people assume that agencies work like companies, when in fact they handle pretty much only what the agency exists for. Agency specific things like HR end up being pretty slim either having other agencies already existing with the legal authority over those areas (like OPM and GSA that set a lot of internal policy that applies government wide) or outsourcing things like pay to the USDA's NFC.
