  • Monaco has a unique position in the Formula 1 calendar. Not just from a historic point of view, but also when it comes to the money they pay, the sponsors around the track, and much more!

When the Monaco GP was finishing this year, the four cars were all within half a second from each other yet we saw no overtaking. • @colpul2103
      @colpul2103 Před rokem +2

I'll agree that it is time to update the circuit and make room for more dynamic racing, however Monaco is the most unique circuit on the calendar. None of the other street or faux street circuits are like it. The main problem with better opportunities for overtaking is all the street in Monaco are too narrow and there really isn't room to add wider streets or a track section, at least not without a lot of effort for a once yearly event. It is used for other races like Formula E but nothing close to racing importance.
I would hate to see the Monaco GP go because of its history and iconic cache' but in fairness it is kind of like an old school iconic stadium whose time has passed. Like the old Yankee Stadium. Maybe with the French GP seeming to being going away a track should be built just outside Monaco. FIA's willingness to give up the French GP should be eye opening for Monaco if it really wants to keep the GP. Maybe if they can deal with that much elevation change have it dip down into part of the city in a sort of track/city or road/city hybrid. Right now as it is Q3 is the most exciting part of the weekend as pole is realistically only broken by P1 screwing up or having a DNF.
Another issue is with grand stands, there's very limited room for them. Fewest seats on the tour translates into lower revenue. Something like 80% of spectators watch from windows and balconies along the route.

even if the race around Monaco is boring, drivers still like to drive there, they like quali and the fans love it, so if they can have the best motorsport organizers to create a time attack format for a special event in Monaco, that would be awesome.

I actually find the Monaco TV direction a relief from all the other events. They don't constantly show full screen car shots (sponsor cam) which offers no perspective on car positioning while racing. Also we don't get the hideous mega zooms on the pit wall crew faces that let you count the hairs on Newey's head. To me there is also a much better balance of air time for all the cars on track with longer distance shots being utilised so overall I find it easier to watch, less frustrating and appearing more like races used to before modern corporate interests decided what we needed to see during a race.

That said, even glossing over the current F1 cars being too big for the track, I don't like what I'm seeing in how the ACM and other organizers are acting like stuck-up American reality TV stars. The fact that they're not willing to sacrifice some of their privileges and compromise for the greater good of motorsport rubs me the wrong way.
This year's race was pretty good, probably the best Monaco GP I've seen since I started seriously watching F1 in 2020 (like I said-- semi-new fan). That said, given everything I've seen recently, I wouldn't be too sad to see the Monaco GP leave the calendar until the organizers can get the reality check they need. I think the problem with monaco being removed is *not* on the monaco was removed, but on the direction of F1 going to if the race was removed.
Similar with F1, NASCAR in the 1990's are taking bigger market that shares bigger money to. The expansion cost North Wilkesboro Speedway and Rockingham to be gone from the schedule. North Wilkesboro like Monaco is just not up to standards of the competition, so they removed it in favor tracks like Texas Motor Speedway and Chicagoland Speedway. Unfortunately NASCAR never capitalized those markets. So in order to cap the losses on, they made a lot of bizzare decisions in the long term like Stage Racing, and Playoffs which basically motorsport version of Champions League Knockout phase which ended destroying their reputation.
Now if F1 actually removed monaco, the afraid is that there were no capital racing event in F1 meant that there were no special event in the calendar. And as a lot of tracks struggle to paid hosting fees at minimum 25 million dollars, by removing monaco who had lowest fees, F1 wouldn't hesitant to removed any tracks that can't lived up to the cost even if it had huge market. Silverstone were first came to mind when they admitted the fees of F1 pulled is just to high for them. And like NASCAR, F1 also expanded their markets such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Miami, and Las Vegas. the question is how sustainable that said races? Are their going to recoup or infact made double amount of money, or they will sink down like NASCAR'S cookie cutter tracks?
Now Katy actually pointed out key factor that would made monaco hard to get a new contract. However is pretty clear that F1 also had it's own fault here, as they raced for almost 100 years and start bragging how bad monaco in just recently. Chain Bear in his video of improving monaco are made pretty clear statement that the 2017 rule changes is the worst rule change F1 has ever had, and monaco just cemented that. There also the Formula E, the support feeder series, and the Historique Monaco which shows that maybe F1 was the problem, not the Monaco.
This race definitely need a better direction, both FOM and AGP needs to turn off their ego and instead start working to improved the spectacle.

C’mon man there’s nearly a hundred years of racing history here. Throwing it away is like saying the Augusta Masters golf doesn’t meet modern standards. Who gives a beep about clashing sponsorships or license fees.

Ive been in favor of axing monaco for years...and i havnt seen any reason to change my mind, host a vintage race there, if people really care about the history you could even hold the official price ceremony end season there but its absolutely inadequate for a F1 race... and thats even with me prefering stragegy being the decisive factor above on track overtakes

Exactly, maybe they just need to stick with the historic gp as well as the formula e race. I think F1 has become too big and needs to move on.

I’ve been watching F1 since I was a kid and the black and gold JPS car was racing but I’d be happy to see the Monaco GP go. I obviously watch it but it’s rare to see an exciting race there.

Monaco should, it's characteristics are: small, urban, glamours, historical, and non overtakes, yes, that one, and even with that can still give good shows and strategies can shine. Monaco should fix the sponsor and tv broadcast thing, but never to leave the F1, it is a main jewel 💎 of the sport.

F1 should never leave. Yes the race can be a little dull at times but this is the most iconic street race of them all. It's one of the four locations F1 should never leave due to them making F1 what it is today.

For as long as I remember I got up and watched Monaco, then the Indy 500 and then the Coke 600.
And for many years now the Coke 600 featured actual racing, the Indy 500 featured actual racing, and Monaco featured an exhibition parade.
When the pomp and circumstance is more important than the race it's supposed to support you know there is a problem. At this point, no matter how sad an occurrence it'd be, Monaco needs to be removed from the schedule. It no longer is a track that provides anything close to racing.

They need 3 things to do to make Monaco suitable for F1:
    1. Expand the track width
    2. Remove some corners
    3. Extend the track length

    - TV direction has been awful the past few years in Monaco, but I can't say that FOM does a great job either in the other races this year.
    - The track itself; well it's mostly the cars who've grown too big (not just for Monaco, but actually for tracks like Hungaroring, Singapore, Zandvoort as well). If you'd compare this years Alpine with Alonso's title winning car it has nearly doubled in total mass. More smaller nimbler cars could not only bring back more spectacle and overtaking in general, but make the narrower circuits more interesting as well
    - Finally; the thing that bothers me most is that if we would lose an icon like Monaco (and Spa), it will not be replaced by another icon track, but by the whoever is the highest bidding boring street circuit in America, Asia or the Middle East. Just for that I wouldn't want to lose a circuit in a country that does have motorsport history (not just the F1 GP, but the Rallye de Monte Carlo as well) and which is a home GP to one of the topdrivers in F1.

  • @internetsguy3506

Monaco is the most Iconic circuit in F1 and no amount of "fan" complaining will change that. It's not a traditional race and expecting it to be is just people missing the point. It's a qualifying race and then luck of the draw and pit stops to change places. That in it's own makes it unique and requires a little diversity of race understanding from the fans but it's still always an interesting result that never fails to produce some sort of drama. I think the rise of popularity of F1 is starting to have a negative effect on it and turning it into an instant gratification race series like all the others. It's not Kart or Nascar. It's ok to have them battle a few laps before earning that pass ;)
The TV deal needs to go though for sure!

as a fan of f1 i believe this is the only track that can be used to prove the best teams that have the best strategies. That is the most appealing part of monaco, and there is some tracks that can prove as such, but in monaco there's no room for mistakes in the strategies the teams make. However, thats about it.

Okay why is matt's images come into my mind while watching this.
Btw i think they should change some part of Monaco, extending it would be nice. What i want is make the tunnel straight longer into the swimming pool maybe it allows some overtake, i dont know about the safety of this but i think it would be more competitve than holding your position all through out the race.

Also time to let Monaco go. No racing, yet it is worth championship points. You cannot even say you earn the points for the quali, because pretty much every time its brought to an end by a red flag.
It could maybe be a 2 attempt time trial event, but then that's not very interesting, is it?
