  • The Monaco Grand Prix is the crown jewel in the Formula 1 calendar, but has an enormous capacity for rubbish races thanks to the lack of passing opportunities. Can this be rectified? Could we the people find a solution for Monaco's overtaking problems?

Yeah, but the issue was also in fuel and tire management. The next year (or so), they allow more fuel in cars to avoid managing it while racing, and tires' management seem to be more reliable today. In 2021, I don't think Ricciardo would have been able to defend its first place. But I'm maybe wrong.

      Realistic changes :
Slightly sharpen turn 10: Slightly sharpen the track and remove part of the concrete barrier to widen the track. These changes willi ncrease the chances of overtaking into the chicane. Humans have the ability to do that, right?
Make turns 15-16 faster: Make them faster, kinda like turns 13-14 so that cars can carry more speed into rascasse and perhaps have a chance of diving it up the inside
Make the last corner faster: The reason why the last corner is narrow is because of a literal bus stop and pedestrian walkway. Simply clear the pedestrian walkway and bus stop for the race and make it a flat-out corner so that cars can carry more speed onto the pit straight and have a better chance of overtaking into turn 1. For ease of access, a temporary bridge could be built like those around the track

    • @TomCastellani

I was going to suggest some sort of a bridge-based-Motegi-style-figure-eight until I reached the end of the video. But yes. Creating more real estate by either extending Monaco into the sea or building upwards - somehow - are the only options I can see.

Even if you could tweak the track to squeeze out a bit more overtaking, by nature it's never likely to be enough to meet the standards people expect - the trick is to get them to not feel too bothered about it.

I honestly think they should use the Monaco GP weekend in F1 to be the equivalent of an NBA All-Star Weekend, for example.. something with 'special' (and safer) races and challenges/events between the drivers, that would NOT count points for the Championships and it would be just to entertain the fans (and for the drivers and the teams to just interact with each other, literally for fun, without all of that heavy Championship competitive feeling in the air) - simply a festive weekend - pretty much like what they have at Goodwood, but using Monaco (the most 'charming' F1 track) to do it.. I don't know.. I believe that, depending on the different ideas for these 'festive events' on the track during the weekend, it would be a LOT more fun to watch than the actual championship race..

There is land reclamation planned in Monaco in the next 5 years called Le Portier which is seemingly the best opportunity to change up the track a bit. Pretty much everywhere else is already built on but this new area is a fresh slate of land and could allow for a new area of track between the hairpin and the tunnel. 2) Remove the Nouvelle Chicane and carry on along Avenue JFK rather than along the quayside. (If they could remove the trees between Avenue JFK and the quayside, the whole width of both could be used as the straight here).
    3) Reclaim part of the NW corner of the harbour to create a new Tabac connecting Avenue JFK directly to the track in front of the swimming pool.
    4) Reverse the stands between the swimming pool exit and Rascasse so that the track runs directly along the water's edge along this stretch.

    Here's an idea:
1996's edition of the Monaco GP is highly regarded because the track was wet and only 3 cars made it to the end. The rest all either crashed out or had mechanical problems.
While car reliability has improved, we can still make the race more interesting by dousing the track in water in case rain doesn't show up. They already do this for pre-season testing at Catalunya, so just bring the equipment out to Monaco. Couple that with changing it to a night race and I think there's a recipe for success that's feasible as it doesn't require layout changes.
The issues would of course be getting the FIA on board with wetting the track, making it more dangerous, for the sake of entertainment. That and changing the race start time, which would also put a damper on the whole "Greatest Weekend in Motorsports" with American fans getting the Monaco GP in the morning, the Indy 500 in the afternoon, and the Coca-Cola 600 in the evening.

Kind of a DRS, just as a faster overtaking road. That way if you have gained enough on the car in front, you get past them when they have to drive the chicane. This will make for a lot of exciting strategy moves close to the end of the race. Also a great way to undercut an opponent by flying through the chicane, and hoping/planning that they wont have an overtake opportunity the lap you are pitting.

If you extend the pier (at the bottom of the picture) far into the water so the straight is both long and wide enough, then put a hairpin at the end to make the cars come back in the other direction too - rejoining the original layout somewhere near Rascasse - you end up with 2 long DRS zones in quick succession. It would certainly solve the overtaking problem, there's more than enough space to build it, and I don't know of any technological obstacles that would make it impossible (see the artificial islands in Dubai). It would cost an insane amount of money of course.

I've been seeing a lot of sentiments to drop Monaco over the past few years, but I don't think people realize that Monaco would've been dropped about a decade ago. People need to realize that Monaco isn't on the calendar purely because of merit, it's on there because of its history and the glam of, "Formula 1 racing on the streets of Monte Carlo." I get that there are many circuits that have more history that is more relevant to motorsports and Formula 1, and perhaps a lot of people think that historical significance and nostalgia shouldn't be the deciding factors as to whether a circuit gets kept. But Monaco is a lot more than that, the allure of F1 racing in Monaco is something that even non-motorsports fans get perked up about. This race has reached almost mythical heights, and most of the drivers really look forward to driving in Monaco. I get that it's a procession, but there is a lot that can be appreciated about Monaco. I for one sorely missed it when it got canceled last year.

Here’s an unorthodox but interesting take: take Monaco out of the traditional calendar, have it as a pure sprint weekend. A bonus race if you will. 8 points to the winner and so on or however you want to go about it. You have your standard free practices, however, quali doesn’t determine your grid position, rather it determines which 10 cars enter Sundays sprint. Here’s the kicker, Sundays sprint would be quali rules. No start position, no 20 cars barrelling into turn 1, send your car out any time in the time period, fastest lap at the end wins. It keeps Monaco in the calendar while making it more exciting than 72 formation laps of a sunday

Doesn't add another passing point, just gives the only real one some more potential. Extends the braking zone, adds some DRS, removes the second part of the chicane that makes it so much more difficult to complete the pass.

  • @compuglobalhypermegamann

Marc Surer said they should drive the circuit counter clockwise, so you have a real chicane after the tunnel which will have a safetyzone/runnoff (you can already drive straight) and there is space to make the corner wider. Thats in my opinion the best idea.

I'm surprised nobody came up with this, but they could just move the Nouvelle chicane 200m down the road with no issues. Put a DRS zone after the tunnel bend; at the nouvelle chicane cars would just go straight (following the old FE layout in reverse); 200m later, before the road starts going uphill, you could put a new chicane, rejoining the current track
If they felt really brave they could follow Avenue Kennedy until Tabac gaining another 60m of straight, but then they'd have to deal with a 2m drop from there to the rest of the track. Difficult, not impossible either

If we are talking track changes and this is my honest suggestion, I don’t car how difficult it is to do it’s about saving the Monaco GP
The exit of the tunnel should veer slightly left, DRS zone opens from just after the bend in the tunnel (detection zone in portier)
It would require a relatively big harbour restructure (a few hundred metres) and surface changes (you mentioned the dip on the left side of nouvelle chicane, Just raise it a little so it’s flat, No dip)
You add a right left chicane (think Monza turn 1 & 2) and this means cars following in the tunnel can shape for a move and potentially make a move into that turn, The purpose of the chicane is to slow the action down a little before the swimming pool section and not have 2 cars side by side through there, Destined to crash
The harbour restructure would inconvenience the billionaires a little but I’m sure they wouldn’t mind a few months job if it meant front row seats to Monaco overtaking opportunity
Monaco contract goes till 2025 if I’m not mistaken, 2 years to get a proper track plan in place, OK it with the relevant people (FIA, ACM, Residents etc) and then get it done before regs change in 2026 season

OK. Been think about this a lot since the weekend. There is actually a technical solution readily available, but the residents - and some super yacht owners - may not like it. In summary - once the cars come down the hill out of the tunnel instead of negotiating the chicane they go straight on down the Avenue JF Kennedy. The row of trees, median strip and barriers you can see separating the Ave JFK from the Quai des Etats-Unis (where the cars actually travel along from Novelle to Tabac presently) are removed creating a very wide tarmac apron so that cars can overtake under a new breaking zone and chicane - constructed on a slightly larger structure encroachment into the harbour than the Nouvelle pier - at about 80-120M away from the current Tabac apex. Enough of an apron so that drivers couldn’t simply cut the corner to block an overtaking manoeuvre under brakes. Add in a DRS from just before the exit of the tunnel and behold - a genuine racing track with an actual overtaking section. The Ave JFK heads up the hill at this point - so there is a good run off area and there is enough room too put in a gravel trap so that out of control cars don’t simply smash head on into the barrier that would still divide JFK as it heads up the hill and the circuit as it approaches Tabac. After the race (and for the rest of the year) trees in very large pots could replace the trees that are removed for the race. So that area of the harbour waterfront wouldn’t be degraded ascetically.

Introduce a "wildcard" penalty randomly given to some teams in the pits. Like, for example, when a driver comes into the pits it triggers a penalty lottery such as "stop will take 10 extra seconds" to simulate what happened to Ricciardo a few years back, or "one of the hydraulic wheel guns doesn't work" to simulate what happened to Bottas yesterday. Things like that are the few things that can actually result in a position changes in Monaco.

Then take a right down to the next roundabout. Take a right some esses come back the casino and continue the rest of the course. To make this happen you would have to make that first rd wider as it is a one car road. However, the good news is that it is a park on both sides so it could be done without destroying any buildings. Thus creating a passing zone by creating about 160M more straightaway on a already fast part of a track and about 560m more distance per lap

I think ! If you take of turn ''10 - 11'' ''Nouvelle Chicane'' and make that into a strait line and then make turn 12 ''Tabac'' into a 90 degrees corner, and we also need at the exit of the tunnel a new DRS zone 😁 We could probably see some overtakes down there.

Alternative: Every year the cars have to be modelled like the F1 cars from the 1950s - 1970s, and they would just do a round robin through each retro year of F1 designs. Each year, the cars would be modelled differently to the previous year, but it means they would always be small, light and capture the magic of the golden ages of the Monaco Grand Prix.
Other options: Race going the opposite way round the track, make the track wider, mandate that cars have to be the same except smaller and lighter or build a whole extra wide brige section with DRS enabled that goes out into the harbour, then back in again and rejoins the track just before the tunnel section

Don't remember who came up with the Idea originally, but a couple days ago someone suggested - how about reversing track direction? The Runoff exits are there and you can maybe create possible overtaking possibilities with a differnt novelle chicane and at the now more straight tunnel exit? Maybe?

tunnel idea is epic, i wanna see left side of tunnel extended to look like nascar track, because i think that exiting tunnel totally upside down would be rly dangerous xD

My idea is to run the race in reverse. Widen the now T1 to fit more cars in, DRS detect zone at the swimming pool chicane, remove the chicane before the tunnel, and make that long straight into a DRS zone. Also, remove the chicane and pit lane at the would be last corner to let cars have more room and speed (also make the straight before the last corner a DRS zone. Start/finish straight also stays as a DRS zone).
Also, fix those road imperfections. They're not a feature but a pain.

It's pretty simple to solve if you ask me.
    FIRST
As they head up the hill from St. Devote, instead of going up to Casino Square, the swing left on Ave. Princess Alice.
Right at Ave. De costa and onto Boulevard des Moulins.
Loop right down Ave de Madone, and rejoin the current track after the exit of Casino Square before the run down to Mirabeau.
You've just added half a mile of wider track and three overtaking opportunities.
    SECOND
Coming down from Lowes, after exiting the right hander, rather than go down under the bridge, passed the front of Rond Portier, and right at Portier... Instead, they can exit the right hander and go left, with a short stab on the throttle before a right, under the bridge, and around the back of Rond Portier. rejoining the track at the current Portier.
It's only a short extension but it provides three differences.
The right hander after Lowes is no longer a right hander it becomes a faster and wider right -left esses,
The longer apex round the back of Rond Portier rather than the current configuration allows more speed to be carried through the corner, plus an additional 100m before the tunnel,
DRS detection zone could be here.
    THIRD
Activate DRS at the tunnel exit
Remove the Nouvelle Chicane, have the track run straight down Ave JFK from the tunnel exit down toward a chicane that end of JFK, rejoining Route Piscine just before Tabac.
This provides a better overtaking opportunity than the current chicane.
The downside is that takes away some of the challenge of Tabac, but would improve the overall lap if the FIRST additional section is added in.
That would solve a lot of the problems. It would obviously need a bit of figuring out but it doesn't massively impact the Residents, or emergency access routes.
