I feel like Mazepin’s fastest lap in Belgium was quite shocking as well
Bravo 👏🏻
yeah, didnt exepect him to even complete the lap 🤣
@@klada8119 same
Remember the race didn’t start
Quote of the year "IT'S MOTOR RACING"
*"NO MICHAEL NO. THIS IS SO NOT RIGHT"* was my favorite quote from Toto this year 😂
That was quite a mic drop
Toto should’ve knocked him out for that one, embarrassing how hard he tries to be sassy on the radio in his position
“No michael no” was the best but “its motor racing” was up there
The One-Two finish from McLaren at the Italian GP was the most unexpected
Agreed
And also the fact that it was mostly on merit and not just luck
I expected them to perform pretty well. Sainz drove like a god in Monza last year. The McLaren seems to be a bit of a sledgehammer- it has amazing top speed, but not the best handling. Couple that with the fastest engine on the grid, and you have a car that's pretty much built for Monza.
@@willzmaztrz5902 most people forget that they were running in a net 1-2 before Max and Lewis collided, obviously the collision basically secured it but with how quick the McLaren was on the straights that weekend they may have been able to hold off Max and Lewis
@@willzmaztrz5902 me too man. Got any 2022 resolutions yet?
What's funny about Kubica's performances, is that despite being brought in on short notice his two performances were enough for him to finish above Mazespin in the standings.
Not above, they were tied on 0
Even the Alfa is infinitely better than 2021 haas
@@pinba4136 Kubica finished 14th at Monza and 15th and Zandvoort. Mazepin's best result was 14th in Baku, but his next best result was 17th (across multiple GP). In circumstances where the drivers are tied on points the individual with the better results finishes above them in the standings.
Binotto's master plan actually looking like it's all coming together for 2022... 3rd in the constructors due to smart driver pairing, engine improvements that will carry over to next year, a happy drama free camp, and potentially the dark horse (*cough!) for smashing the new aero regs 🤞
Let's hope Carlos gets an extension to his contract over the Christmas break - he deserves it-
Charles new contract sees him at Ferrari until 2026.
The fact that the Ferrari was improving all the way through the season proves that they might have impacted their chances for next year. McLaren looked like they dropped off, and may be because they stopped updating the 2021 car.
@@leftyplayz6908 Good point, but I think Ferrari will stay ahead. They have been smart. The only advancements they made were with engine improvements. They can carry these engine performance improvements into next year.
Everyone will be designing next years aero package from scratch, and Ferrari have one of the best wind tunnels.
@@kak7440 hi Karen Keating.
@@leftyplayz6908 McLaren's 1-2 seems to be so rare.
No one is gonna talk about how Kimi's retirement news stayed sealed in an envelope since March?
Yeah, not surprised tbh. I think he decided to focus doing something else as his performance dropped
Not a surprise. Fits Kimi perfectly.
…. Tumbleweeds ….
The title fight was definitely a surprise. Max stepped it up amazingly this year; those two were regularly 20-30s clear of the next driver.
On the inconsistent stewarding; its existence wasn't a surprise....It was just surprising how bad it was. I didn't expect a rogue race director.
And Sainz; the man just seemed to cruise into 5th. No big issues, no big scandals, no big failures; just finishing 11th or better every single race.
No big scandals? He was the guy who suffered aswell as Hamilton from the final race BS safety car call. He could of had a chance to get 1st or 2nd as he was on fresh softs, but nah, Masi decided he had to overtake his lapped cars.
@@Kitchen-nightmares- do you max would finish 1st carlos 2rd and lewis 3rd
@@Dutchempireball A very big chance, yes, Sainz had nothing to lose and a win to gain, also fighting for his own personal best spot in the standings. He wasn't given the opportunity regardless of his cars performance to have a crack at it, but Max was.
@@Kitchen-nightmares- he was in old hards as he didnt have a free pit sto0
@@enriquematorrasmunoz9753 Sainz pitted for new softs....
The best stat of the entire season was the fact that Mazispin finished 21st of a 20 car field.
McLaren also got the only 1-2 in 1997 - another titanic title battle where the Woking outfit weren't involved, but were recovering well from a few years in the doldrums. Come the big changes to the technical regs for 1998 they were miles ahead of everyone.
Hope this happens 😂
This will happen next year with Daniel winning the championship
God i hope history repeats itself
Here's another:
"It's a marathon, not a sprint" - HAMILTON, Lewis. Baku GP 2021
"A championship is won over a season, not a single lap" - many people say
nobody expect Lewis comiting such newbie mistakes
@@adam346 yes. Umi Sonoda also said that.
@@TheEmolano was kinda unfortunate, but that’s what happens if you’re always lucky
Did he say that before the Green-white-checkered finish? Because if so, that dude was out his frickin mind.
I think that a Haas having a fastest lap is very surprising
Or a Williams in p2
I think it is important to remember that Ricciardo didn't just win because of the Max-Lewis crash. He was ahead of Max and holding him before the pitstop stage
Ricciardo in that race was phenomenal.
Lando could've overtaken him, but was told not to by the team.
@@Michael_Dolences. yeh he was told not to but then Ric stopped tyre saving and drove off anyway in the last few laps
Lewis too because of an awful sprint race performance from him
@@Michael_Dolences. Lando could even dethrone Hamilton in 2022.
I still believe that Daniel still has the skill and will have the equipment to win a championship with McLaren in the future, maybe not next year but who knows what will happen next year
Definitely has the potential to do so but definitely will rely quite on the car I think based on the level of skill in the field atm. Hope he can do it bcz I would love to see that
With so much young talent around him, Verstappen, Russell, Leclerc, Sainz, and even Lando, his time is running out. But yes, I would welcome that too, as unlikely as it currently seems.
I feel that Mclaren will never win a world champ ionship in the next few years , simply because they lack the fiancés
Nope, I don't think that will happen, like other comment mentioned there are so many good drivers on the grid right now, I think Danny had potential but things are not looking good for him, he may come in top 5 but I think he will never be champion, he can be a great competition for a while like Gasly will be someday, but not the Champion. ALSO McLaren will give Lando the treatment Redbull gave to Max and that may set him back even further
Honestly I think Ricciardo messed up by abandoning Renault when they clearly were ready to make a car designed around him. He’s been talking about how the McLaren is a hard car for him to drive.
Truth be told I see his faillures this season as some sort of poetic justice for him abandoning a team that clearly were invested in making him a champion
Undoubtedly the best F1 season ever and it seems to get even better for the coming years. Fantastic.
Nah, 2007 was better or 2012 with 8 different winners in the first 8 races
@@josedupuydelome9486 best fight lmao
Ocon’s win was by far the highlight for me. Almost everyone doubted him after his incident in 2018 and here he comes and proves them wrong!
Ocon was great this year, huge respect

He’s massively overrated imo, I think he got the luckiest podiums of anyone this season (except maybe Seb/Gasly), and I think Piastri would perform better in his seat
@@marccowan3585 Overrated? Tell me which people constantly praise Ocon day in, day out, like they do with guys like Norris and Gasly? Ocon is the one of the more underrated drivers on the grid. And I don't think Piastri would be able to be level with Fernando Alonso throughout an entire season
@@marccowan3585 but he lost probably 30+ points due to bad luck this season..
"Aston Martin were pretty bad"
I kinda expected that to be honest (or at least not surprised by it). Last season we saw already that RacingPoint struggled with developing their car further after they copied the 2019 merc, being already slower than McLaren at the end of the season. Although they changed their chassis for this year to make it similar to the 2020 merc, it was always difficult for them to keep up the momentum, especially with the rules changes. Also: The team is used to spending money in the most efficient way, not about spending more money to gain even more. Even though it sounds so simple, the time is still unexperienced to work with bigger amount of money, so it was expected that the results wouldnt come naturally.
And also, Mugello was visited in 2020, also a MotoGP circuit ;)
I honestly missed Force India's way of developing. They had one of the smallest bidgets in F1 and beat teams like McLaren in 2014-18 even though McLaren had one of the biggest budgets.
Why are there so many sex girls recently, is this a meme or what?
@@josephc.9520 They figured email scams aren't getting their money's worth so they decided to go to more publicly visible ones
Mclaren most certainly weren't faster than them at any point in the season. Perez would have had podiums in 5 consecutive races if not for a crazy amount of bad luck. They would and should have finished ahead of Mclaren and had a much faster car.
McLaren wasn’t faster. RP had engine failures.
Ocon winning was quite the surprise but Fernando’s season was truly something to see. He really surprised me.
in monza, i still believe that it would ave been a double podium (maybe not a 1-2) for mclaren even if the max lewis incident didnt happen and there wasnt a safety car etc. the most definitely had the raw speed and telent to get the double podium
my favorite was when haas didnt have enough money to get mazepin a new chases so his father had to pay xD
Kinda sad
7. MotoGP track...
Mugello happened last year, if you remember rightly.

For reference as to how bad Aston Martin’s season was, they finished closer in points to Williams than to AlphaTauri
0:27 dare I say that redbull had a 1,2 in sight before the Verstappen tire blow out in Azerbaijan
Aston Martin were closer to Williams than they were to Alpha Tauri 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
For the record Ocons and everyone else’s grid avoiding pit stop was just as legal as the last lap going green in Abu Dhabi if you read the rule book.
Can you explain this I’m confused
Even more legal if you consider the fact that it's normal to start from the pit lane...
@@poggersatgmail7785 not sure what he's referring to. Either Turkey where he didn't pit (2 compound rule is for dry tyres only, so you can do an entire race in intermediates without stopping) or in any race with a red flag (you can swap tyres and repair the car during a red flag, for safety reasons)
@@das_flauschige_animehorn6085 It’s normal for cars to be able to start from the pit lane at the start of the race yes, but this was not the start of the race. This was a restart of the race. I suggest everyone reads through the rules on the initial start which mentions how cars entering the pits should line up behind cars already there and contrast that with the restart rules that talk about how cars that were in the pits at the time of the red flag must start from the pits (which wasn’t applicable as no one was in the pits) but everyone else quote “must go to the grid”. I suggest that everyone is relying on what they think the rules always have been rather than what’s written down in the regs.
@@Batters56 can you explain what you mean with your last sentence?
The problem with Daniel I think is that his driving style doesn't suit the McLaren, he's a master at late-breaking and overtaking, the McLaren is very similar to the Merc, lots of power and straight line speed but not amazing in the corners.
That's why Daniel was elite in the RB and squeezed almost perfection out of the Renault
You think? Or you're just regurgitating what others have said....
This season gave brilliance.
F1 has always raced on a MotoGP circuit, Catalunya is a bike track first and a car track second
My favorite fact is that I haven't been into F1 since I was a child - the last season I really followed was Alonso's second title winning season, after that I didn't have the time (and none of my friends were interested at all). Then I come back to it some 15 years later and nearly every race is an absolute banger. I just loved it and I'm thrilled to see the field mixed up (or more likely one team or another absolutely slashing the rest) next year.
Loved this season for these and 100 other reasons. Thanks everyone at WTF1 for the consistent content and I look forward to more to come. Merry Christmas and all the best for the new year!
Happy for Sainz, seems to fit quite well in the team.
For me Perez, Ocon and Sainz were the big surprises this year 💪🏻
Perez? He was beaten by a very underwhelming Bottas this season. Far from being terrible, Perez's season was kinda average.
@@soundscape26 he made the best defence several time this Season against Hamilton, wich few can do.
Perez was more of a disappointment, from his 2020 performances you'd expect RB 1-2s in most races
@@keliandevalck7263 It was great from him yes, but you cannot analyse a whole season by 5 minutes. And as nice as it was it was not even decisive, Lewis pulled away again until the final drama unfolded.
What a season Lando has, this season he not only demolished DannyRic but also put himself in the confersation of F1 future champions along with Max, Charles and George
At the same time Carlos also surprisingly able to put a fight against Charles, yes Charles has a poorer luck, but sometimes he himself took part of the mistake, like in Monaco where he bind it in Q3 or in Austria where he took Pierre out along with his front wing sent him to the back of the grid
I think it's show how monster McLaren line up was in '19 and '20
Well articulated!! Couldn't agree more!
It's not in any way surprisingly that Carlos put up a good fight against Charles.
You're right. The only thins is: Max isn't in the "could this guy be a future world champion" discussion anymore.
F1 really downplayed Ocon's amazing win
Bottas bowling
@@joshuaschimanski2317 Yh but it was the way he reacted amazingly to it, and was defending against a 4 time world champion throughout the race. Yes Alonso helped big time, but you have to admit Ocon's defending was good.
@@KimiButNoDrink Ocon won a rigged race though.
@@Alto53 Where- what? How was Hungary rigged?
@@KimiButNoDrink cause the whole sport is.
11: didn’t expect Haas to win the social media championship. But they deserved it
Let's not forget either the return of Gigakubica 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐

Imagine Mazepin winning a race in 2022.
Now come back to reality ☺️
Yes.
"Papaya cars" haha. It's a nice and playful way to look at them. Can't unhear it now.
every single one of these was a "😳 oh yeah!!" moment for me
Monza was probably the most memorable race for me. Seeing the top 2 contenders out, just made the race much more enjoyable.
Racing Point really should have kept their name and the pink car, I think Stroll loved it.

Well for me and millions of others, especially watching race reaction videos, the end of the season WAS FREAKING AWESOME. Best uno reverse card EVER.
You’re just British and salty.
But WTF? It’s called motor racing. We went racing 😎🏆
The fact that I am a vettel fan and my birthday was when he got a podium in baku is just incredible
I never expected the Brazilian GP to actually happen. I think everyone can say we are glad it did.
Mat: “The 7 time…”
Me: “World Champion??”
Mat: “Race winner”
Me: -sad honey badger noises-
Kubica deserves more praise for not being on the pace with 1 arm, he should be a world champion
Kubica finished twentieth in driver standings off of only two races ahead of Maz who drove in twenty-one.
@@sheldoniusRex I know
I never expected rules will change on the fly to gift championship to anyone
There were some pretty incredible special liveries this year too....thinking of Mclaren's Gulf livery and RB's White Japanese Thank-you.
My favorite was when Alonso held up Hamilton like crazy 🤣😧
Biff from back to the future was prime editing 😂
They allready race on motoGP tracks for years. MotoGP also races at silverstone, barcelona and malaysia (at which f1 recently raced).
FIA was weird
When verstapen go outside lap and get advantage (not legal and penalty)
When Hamilton did next race(it's legal and no penalty)
it is not a surprise actually but gasly really impressed me. he had very strong qualy performance and decent racepace. and I believe he proved us that he has championship material.
and that is why the 2021 F1 season is the best season for Formula 1
even better than 2012 season
I love the picture at 5:50. My first thought was how kubica had no hair but gio has tons😂😂😂
Masi stealing the championship was the one I didn't see coming.
That nr 1 is just amazing, Brilliant from McLaren!
mugello is also a motogp track
A moment of the Season for me as a Checo fan...:
Alonso in Hungary: ...defending like a lion.
Perez in Abu Dhabi: "Fernando, hold my beer!".
Valencia is a motor gp track. And they raced there a few times.
Never thought i’d see a Haikyuu reference in a WTF1 video😂😂
Michael Masi was the biggest surprise
Not really. I said all along he has no idea what he's doing. And he won't be back next season if F1 know what's good for them.
@@xtheamazingax yeah but the last race was not expected
@@benjicool2808 Good point... takes the biscuit, doesn't it?
I did not expect Kubica here, but it's a welcome surprise.
@wtf1 You should do all season rundown in podcast
3:42 this aged well with porpoising in 2022
for me the best was that Ocon win GP as new racer who win GP, secound that McLaren have 1-2 in Monza. Sadest was how Noris lose Russia GP, and ofcours whot stewards did in AbuDhabi :(
The Title fight is the best in my opinion
It is still surprising that Mercedes and Red Bull didn't get a 1-2. They were by far the top 2 teams, but somehow nothing. Really liked the McLaren boys up there.
Aight hear me out ok
So Rp/Aston are an alliance with toto wolff since lawrence is sorta a business partner , so
RP fired perez
hired vettel
Perez made Max win the wdc in many ways
now we know where it went wrong
2021 had more twists than any other season since 2014-combined
You were the only ones that didn't expect Norris beating Ricciardo. For me, it was a sure bet due to the adaptation process.
Vettel’s 2 podiums on the 7th fasted car was a highlight for me
McLaren's One-two was just nuts, the win was already crazy.
But a One-two?? Man I was not ready for that XD
10 things I would have expected from the 2021 F1 season
10) Mazepin spins
9) Mazepin spins again
8) Mazepin spins again and again
7) Mazepin spins and crashes
6) Mazepin crashes
5) Mazepin qualifies slower than his teammate
4) Mazepin ends up behind his teammate
3) Mazepin DNF
2) Mazepin spins again and again and again
1) Mazepin is the slowest in a race
For me Carlos Sainz was the consistent shining star of 2021.
Race in a MotoGP track like... Last year in Mugello?
For me the highlight of the year was "I can because I just did"
I don’t like how everyone associates Max and Lewis’ Monza crash with Daniel’s win as if it was handed to him. Daniel was always going to win that race on merit; the only thing that accident did was ensure Lando got P2.
What would’ve been really cool is if Leclerc or Sainz had have gotten a Ferrari in P3 to make it the only Mercedes and RedBull-less podium of the year.
Definitely did not expect ricciardo to win one but I’m so glad I was here for it lol
Riccardo struggling
The crash of Verstappen at Silverstone is what I will remember rather than Kubica
Mugello was also a motoGP track
4:14 he said it he said it!!!
That time the GOAT pressed the wrong button and lost in Baku was pretty unbelievable.
Truly an amazing season. I love most of all how Lando asserted himself as a truly top driver. In your face, Lee Claxton!
1:55! Bloody excellent! Love it!
My WTF1 Official F1 Annual came today btw. Thank you so much for doing it, I'm gonna be taking a very good look at that on Christmas Day. Love you guys. Thank you for all you do. And a Merry Christmas to you all. 🧡
5:10 disappointed I didn't hear the bass
Didn't we race at a MotoGP circuit last year as well at Mugello?
indeed
I hope we can see a Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris win soon, both of them are outstanding drivers...
Should add, Ricciardo speaking Italian to the Tifosi, at Monza.
Hey there!!👌🏾👌🏾
Kubica spining in monza and finishing behind gio
Gio holy F***
Belgium qualifying was hands down the best session of the season
For the Jude Law clone (aka Russell)
I honestly forgot that Russel got a podium
I had completely forgotten Hamilton being alone on the grid
I feel like Lawrence is probably pissed about letting Sergio go, seeing that he got two wins after being announced that he wasn’t racing with the team
I think many companies are realizing the franchise potential of a spot in F1 and are willing to put money into it (lets not forget that a majority of the funds come from advertisers) on the basis that the cost of entry will always outweigh the cost of remaining inside it.. meaning that if anyone, even HAAS or Williams were to leave, it would be a hefty sale and decent returns for whichever corp/family/group that owned it. So it doesn't matter how good/bad Aston did... it's the overall value of the team that is important to daddy Stroll.
