This is how I find out what year a Evinrude or Johnson Outboard motor is. I hope it helps anyone that is trying to find the year of their motor.

I found out thru my son living in the States that this particular model with the suffix RPT/RPTL was built in 1991. Thanks very much for your help.
This is glorious, I been tryin to find out about "do i have to register my boat in ontario?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Siyichael Mysterious Smasher - (do a google search )? It is a great one of a kind product for discovering how to get a cheap boat title report minus the normal expense. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my neighbour got great success with it.

I’m looking to buy this: Johnson 9.5. - model# 9R71R , Serial# C48844. Wondering if it’s a 1971. Also wondering if it’s going to be a good, reliable forever motor after a thorough fix up. My 9.8 Merc is still a dog, even after lots of money went into it. Thanks, Tom

No I didn't find it on google although I am sure it is on their. A Evinrude dealer gave it to me years ago.

How do you tell which 70s model you have? I'm new to the whole eveinrude 2 strokes. My boat is a 74 and the owner said its a 73 model engine but I want to make sure before I start buying parts
I put "old evinrude 25HP" in Google search & it took me to a look up chart at: www.marineengine.com/parts/model_guide_pre80.html#e25hp
The identification plate with the model & serial number is where he says it is on the left side of motor.
I used the chart & found out for the first time my old Evinrude 25HP was built in 1971.

Thanks for the video. It’s definitely helped but I’m still a little confused. I’m in Australia. I just bought an old boat 2nd hand. From what I can make out of the serial stamped into my Evinrude outboard, it says E70TLCEI. From that I’m getting it’s an Evinrude 70HP. The ‘TLC’ part, well I have no idea what that means. And is it possible that it ends with the last 2 digits as the year of manufacture, which would make it a ‘91?
The E is the style Evinrude, 70 = Horsepower, T = Trim &Tilt Electric Start, L Shaft length 20in, CE = 89, I Model Run or Suffix.

What are the best spark plugs for OMC 9.9 Evinrude 2 stroke 1997 year . Having trouble finding them
I always use the ones that the factory recommended. Champion QL77JC4 @ 0.030 in. {0.8 mm} They have worked good for me. I buy them at walmart if you see them get them they don't stay in stock long.
We also have boat race for 25 HP....i still remember the colour scheme..white blue,white orange,white red,black gold..double nose spit out smoke fresh in the morning just adrenalin to see my father speed up for send me to the school....miss that memory...evinrude Johnson

Thank you. I have an 1988 8hp Evinrude. Quick question?? The 2 stroke fuel ratio says 100:1 but alot of stuff on the internet says don't ever run that. Do a 50:1....any truth to that?
I always run my fuel mix at 50:1. I have read that different oil requires different mix. I stick with a good mixing oil and 50:1. The price is high if we get the wrong mix.

I have th a 1991 and a 1993 and Run 50:1 fuel to oil mixture. Most 2 stroke oils have the chart with them. I use quick silver not much smoke at start up. Most likely around 2.5 oz of oil to 1 gallon of gas. I always use the two stroke oil for outboards.

My evenrude has no size number in the model number. It’s EBRCUD is all it says. Made in Belgium serial number 1393594. Can’t figure it out. It looks like maybe 9.9 hp or smaller. Any help I find your video very helpful
What does the C at the end of a model 75ELR78C mean? Also what does the ELR mean?
The last letter in the model number is the suffix or model run. Most of the books just say the suffix aren't important to the consumer. The example I have seen on line is like a outboard would be
70 HP Power trim 20" shaft is a A suffix. I think it is the details of your motor.

How do I test my trigger base on a 1974 115 hp VRO evinrude one of the leads has no OL ms 30 something on the other three
I have not worked on a model that old. On a 90s model the sensor coil resistance test should be with in the ohms at each connection. If not replace the timer base assembly.
Apparently this 35 hp Evinrude that I have is a model prior to 1980 which have model numbers with less than eight digits. The model # is- 55802R The serial # looks to be E0001371. By the last two digits on the serial # I assume it is a 1971 year. Does anyone know how to determine the year of a pre 1980 Evinrude? I am trying to order a top crankshaft seal for it. I see that the crankshaft seal # 321895 fits Evinrudes 35 hp through 75hp. But I am not sure if this would change by the year with older models possibly having different size seals. Any input on this?
Sorry I gave wrong model #. Instead of 55802 the right # is 35802. I looked it up and it is a 1978. The way they have it stamped makes it easy to get the number wrong. Thanks .

I recently inherited a Johnson Outboard 5 hp Model TD-20 but I don't know what exact year it is. Ser# is 573385 but I cannot find if its a 46,47 or 48 etc.??? Can you help me??

The first number gives you the year 15034 is a 1961 18hp fastwin

My Evinrude outbooard model is 70973R. So it's a 70hp, not sure about the 9, maybe a 1973??, the R I have no idea. Any thoughts on this ?

Ok! So the R means its a rope start which makes sense since I found the rope in the engine compartment. I'm not understanding where you came up with 79 as the year? I'm guessing the '3' means 3 cyl which leave only the '97'. @@OmFishing

I bought an old evinrude fisherman 6hp. It was repainted and I can't find a model number plate anywhere
On the power head right under the fuel pump there should be a round disk. That disk should have numbers stamped on it. That will give you the year and model of the motor. If the disk is original.
yea but.....what if your tag is long gone? got a 1989 johnson 88 spl and cannot figure out the model number.
On the engine block there is a round disk that has numbers on it. You can find the year and model from those numbers
mine reads CE10RCCD , so mine is a 10 hp, my question is , is a 10 hp the same as a 9.9 ?because some motors have 9.9 marked on the cover, mine is just marked EVINRUDE.
When I ran that model number it came back as a 1988 Evinrude 9.9hp. The outboard company change the 10 HP to 9.9 because of state reg of no 10 HP or larger on a lot of lakes.

Hmmmm, I have an e-tec 90 with E90ELEUC this makes it a 97 but the e-tec didn't come out till 2004 .... Interesting!

Your number 18802-E comes up as a 1968 Evinrude 18HP. I hope this helps.
I’m trying to get a title and will need a model and serial number. Which is the model number? The shape and shift lever appears to be similar to a 9.5.The photos I find of an 18 hp look different. I’ll try to send a photo. I’m not real good at this. I do appreciate your help. Royce

I am looking to buy a model E10SELCOM, how come there is no L on the year chart and what does the S mean?
This is not a easy answer, for 1999 and newer The E is the style. Like Evinrude or Johnson. The next is Horsepower The next letters are Design Feature. Some places say the S is for Special Styling {White Evinrude}The L Stands for 20 inch Shaft length. The CO would be 85 The M would be model run or Suffix.
Now if the motor is 1980 to 1998 the SE would stand for Electric start non tilt sail. Manufactures make all this up for them to track the motors and hard for us to figure it out.

That is a 1978 Evinrude 9.9. The service manual I have for my 1978 Evinrude, The fuel oil mixture is 1 part lubricant to 50 parts gasoline.

On the crankcase there is a round disk with the model number on it. Should be on the top of the engine in plan sight. Let me know if you find it.

The M on the end of the model number is the Model run or Suffix. I don't have any more information then that. I know it is not much help.

What if that tag is missing or unreadable?
There should be a round plug on the side of the engine with some numbers on it. That will give you the year and model.
Serial number is 5524R-14498. This doesn't seem to correspond to this video at all. Any ideas? Thanks

What year is a fisherman 6 hp ,All they give is the serial number. This motor was made 1965 to 1975?

The two important numbers on mine a cu and then p so does that mean it’s a 78 right not an 87
CU would be 87. the C is 8 and the U is 7.

Nope, I stand corrected, R and RS actually are listed as rope start in Evinrude's documentation

Hi there I have a 25hp evinrude and am struggling to find out the year with a weird model code HE25FPF I don't know if trim bracket is different but will like some help
Also something that may help is that the water pick up on the gearbox is above the fins so can't use ear muffs

Are you sure the second letter to the last is a G
If the motor is not one of these years this don't apply.
The model number starts as follows
J - Johnson
60 - Horsepower
E - Design Feature like E for electric start
L - Shaft length L= 20 inch
The next two places are the year for models
1980-1998
Year Bult
I = 1
N = 2
T = 3
R = 4
O = 5
D = 6
U = 7
C = 8
E = 9
S = 0
If the G in the model number was after the horsepower than that would stand for G = special styling. I know Johnson made some outboards with some special model numbers that make them hard to track. If you keep looking you will find it.

On the model number are you sure about the last letter is a T. That model comes up in the 1996 to 1998 years but none of them end in a T.

On a johnson 20 hrs on the motor there a around plate stamped with numbers 25R73 A E 3789524 so is it a 1973 there no serial number or model plate on the on it

Here is what I find. E is for evinrude, 20 is the horse power, bf stands for Belgium Derated - rope start, CS the year 1980, A is the model run or suffix. Hope this helps.

so what about older than 1990
There is a lot of information on the pre 1990 models on the internet.
That's great now impress me and show us how to determine what it is when the glued on tag falls off and there is nothing but a engine family number and a plug number that is not the model number.
What is the number on the plug. We can get it from there if the plug is original. The make and that number we can find it.
What if it was a 40's motor
There is a few Web sights out there that have that information. If you have the model and serial numbers it can be found.

@@OmFishing Thanks. It looks like new but it's locked up. I found a little surface rust in the cylinders above the pistons. I was able to wipe that off. I put some oil around the top of the piston to see if it loosens things up....fingers crossed
