Regular Car Reviews: 2007 Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited

  • My mistake. A I6 is smoother than a V6. Oops. If the Countryman is so British, the Jeep Wrangler is INSURMOUNTABLY American.
    It's hard not to want to dig into that V6, to take it through puddles and out into the city, out past DePaul
    University and its village of Big 10 transplants in yoga pants with bearded boyfriends who tweet out
    pictures of craft breweries. You want to just gun this thing, get the wind in your nostrils, to take in the
    smell of patchuli and scones and unauthorized snuggles.

    Hate to be that guy, but a straight six is actually a perfectly balanced engine, where a V6 is not in secondary balance I believe. Manufacturers like V6 for cost reasons. 90* v6 are made with v8 tooling, which saves significant amounts of money, while better balanced 60* v6 are easier to use across model lines, and fit into just about anything. Straight 6s only really work in rwd applications due to their length

    • @rfouR_4

      I hate to be that guy but you're right. Straight 6s are indeed smoother than V6s. They're inherently balanced, V6s aren't. Only modern transversely mounted Inline 6 FWD car is the S80, of one which I own myself.

    Actually Straight Sixes are much smoother than V sixes because they have both primary and secondary forces balanced. In fact, V6s are so inherintly imbalanced that they didn't even appear often until recently because they vibrated too much. That's why Mercedes, Nissan etc. used I6s until recently - when technology that could more practically keep the vibration down in V6 engines.

    A V6 is not inherently smoother than an inline 6. Inline 6 has natural primary and secondary balance. It is one of the smoothest engine configurations you can get. V6 engines need all kinds of firing order or split-pin trickery to run smooth. I know individual inline 6 engines might run less smooth than an individual V6 but in general it's not the case.

    V6 is NOT smoother than a straight 6.

    • @djyjrlz

      Daniel Yorke-johnson Its the other engines that require more dev, such as balance shafts; little additional effort is put into smoothing an L6, that isn't a given for smoothing any reciprocating engine, such as reducing moving masses, stiffening the short block, and harmonically balancing the crank. Other engine configurations require the use of balance shafts and counterweights to lessen their first order vibration (a pulse per revolution) and second order vibrations (a pulse every second revolution, such as the power stroke in a one cylinder engine).

    Actually the V6 Jeep predates the I-6. In the late 1960s (before AMC purchased Jeep) Jeep used Buick V6s as an alternative to 4 cyl engines to get more power. They purchased them instead of purchasing I6s because lengthening the hood is not necessary to go from a 4 to a V6 (it would be for the I6). Once AMC purchased Jeep it switched to AMC I6s because that it what was available and had to lengthen the hood to fit them, the first step to poser-hood for the Jeep. This happened again in the 80s with the Cherokee which originally had a 4 and a V6, but they instead moved the firewall back to fit the I6.

    Jeeps had a V6 option from '66-'71. Buick had designed and produced a V6 in the early '60s but sales were slow so they sold the V6 engine tooling to Jeep. GM bought the tooling back from AMC in 1974 when they needed to downsize their engines due to the gas crisis. By then AMC had enough straight-6 production to put their own I6 engines into Jeeps as the upsized engine option so they were happy to sell it back.

    I'm fine with people who hate jeeps, they aren't for everyone, and your jokes are always funny, even if they're at my expense! What I don't get is why you'd say a TJ is more of a jeep than a JK? I always hear this and really don't get it. Stock for stock, a JK is a much more capable off-roader than a TJ. Its not really even debatable given ground clearance and approach-departure angles. It's still a live axle front and rear. So they ditched the leaf springs, big deal.

    • @nategaudiello8297
      @nategaudiello8297 Před 8 lety +2

      The JK is different from older jeeps because they are more domesticated and are owned by people who don't off-road, but carry children in them like its a mini van. They tried to appeal to more people with different options. But in reality, a jeep was built for being tough, durable, and going anywhere, anytime. Not trying to appeal to soccer moms who need more room, or parents who need more safety. I think that I how the JK is different from real and better jeeps before 2007

    • @OhYeaMista
      @OhYeaMista Před 8 lety +1

      +Nate Gaudiello You can't blame the vehicle for what someone decides to do with it. It sounds like you dislike a soccer mom who drives the jk, not the jk itself. Don't confuse the two. I have a JK that I do offroad and guarantee a stock TJ X would have trouble following me. JK has More clearance, bigger wheels, better angles, and BLD traction control. Apparently "real" jeeps can't benefit from those things? Nothing against TJs. I love them. But they are less capable. It's a fact.

    • @OhYeaMista
      @OhYeaMista Před 8 lety

      +Nate Gaudiello oh and I'd take the i6 over the v6 any day for the record. The drivetrain in the 07-11 wrangler sucked. I won't argue that.

      A jeep JK isnt a true Jeep. A true Jeep is Amc/Mopar. There is nothing about JK's that are true Mopar. And they got rid of Amc completely. A JK is just what Fiat spit out because they wanted to make a new Jeep. But they clearly fucked up

    • @lucasechenique39

    We own a 2007 Wrangler Unlimited but it's one of the very few produced that is a 2-wheel drive. They supposedly only made like 12 of them according to a salesman at our local jeep dealer. Can't imagine why they made any at all to be honest, a jeep w/o 4-wheel drive is like a man without his junk! But the wife fell in love at first sight so we bought it. It's been so reliable, better than any other vehicle I can remember owning. Jeeps are just awesome all around.

    Just discovered your channel (what rock have I been under?).
    The reason they went to the v6 was twofold. As mentioned the TJ was the last to have the AMC engine but also there was no way they would meet the more strict emissions requirements with the I6

    If I was to guess, they used the 3.8 (Which I think they cribbed from the Caravan) because the old AMC based inline 6 probably couldn't meet emissions. The designers knew the Pentastar V6 was only a couple years away and they needed an engine to fill the gap till then.

  • @TheBrokenLife
    @TheBrokenLife Před 8 lety +2

    You need another correction: Chrysler didn't "derive" the 4.0L from the 4.2L AMC. The 4.0L is a 100% AMC designed motor. It was already done when the Chrysler bought AMC.
    Hence, my TJ is allowed into AMC only events. And yes, it's been on the race track at those events.
