This car can do 2 laps of Nurburgring, recharge and do it again all day long without battery thermal issue, power drop or brake fade. Not even Taycan can do that. And it is only 1/3 price of Taycan.
@@frok7744 People tend to focus on 5N's fake transmission and fake engine sound, but it is Hyundai's advanced battery temperature management system and amazing regen system that makes 5N truly special.
a regular car can do that.

In some comments here, people are mistaken for virtual sound and virtual transmissions.
People seem to think of it as just a gimmick for fun or imitation. I used to drive the circuit often. Surprisingly, people don't feel speed with their senses. I just feel the gravity of acceleration and deceleration.
So you can feel the speed sensibly with the sound of the engine. In order to drive the circuit properly, such various sensory information must be felt. That's why the manufacturer put it as an option.
Even virtual sound was created out of necessity. It's not just a gimmick.
That's fair. I own an economy car and I can tell you that sometimes I cannot even tell if the engine is one or not because of all the sound deadening.
it is definitely a gimmick. and it´s pathetic
Dynamic feedback👍

Every performance oriented EV should have this! I'm really impressed by the creativity.
Hyundai is doing highly creative stuff these days. Reminds me of the domestics back in the 1960s, really neat and exciting work by engineers who love cars.
Take the Elantra N. That was a real eye-opener. But now they are innovating in the SUV and electric spaces, too.
How I wish the abusive, psychotic nanny-state would leave us alone!
LOVE the Elantra N. Didn't have time to film it, but did do the autocross with the Elantra N you see quickly in this episode.
but question: is their creativity really practical? isn't changing torque profiles to simulate gear changes wearing the thing down prematurely? what that does is artificially making mechanic shocks on the, well, not transmission but rather bogies? perhaps? if you do "change gears" everyday in it, in a span of don't know perhaps 5-10 years? it'll break down. Of course, a CVT does fake shift as well but those "shifts" are gentle and don't create any shocks. Cars should last at least 30 years if not even 50, if we scrap cars after only like 2-5 years that's a really big waste, of money, of resources, of everything, i know consumerism and stuff but still, throwing money out the window is a waste.
Another thing is comfort, I daily drive a manual and I've developed my own technique of shifting in such a manner gear shifts are not felt at all, while I drive a manual smoothly with no jerking on gear shifts you people with electric cars that can provide the smoothest and quietest ride ever choose instead to be jerked back and forth by quote "gear shifts" and feel like a potato in a truck basically, that's backwards, really
The MotoMan "hey now!" is the equivalent of a sleeper surprise 🧐😮🧐

My favorite thing about this Ioniq 5? The rear wiper. 😂
You are not the only one to tell me this . . .
멍청한놈아 우물안에서 개구리랑 놀아라😅
2025 and on will have them.
My real problem with any high weight vehicle, ice or not, is the added wear and tear on brakes, tires, etc. Especially when on the track. What Hyundai has done here though, is nothing short of remarkable. Like a real video game for real roads.
You are absolutely correct. In performance driving, managing the weight or the rotation of the car (in addition to speed and acceleration) is critical. The best way to manage weight is by being able to quickly manipulate G forces and you do that with gear shifts. Slam the gears at the right time and it’s quicker than micromanaging speed with just throttle control. What Hyundai has done is to take this racing concept of gearing and digitize a DCT program for electric motors. In the Ioniq 5 N you can slam it into a regen gear (a torque band) using the left/right paddle shifters (0.6G at the highest in the Ioniq) similar to downshifting/upshifting. And shift changes, whether digitally in electric motors or mechanically with multiple gearing, when amplified with sound registers much quicker in the brain.
I would love to see a CZcamsr demonstrate how you attack a track turn with DCT gear shifts versus a single-speed automatic transmission and you’ll get the idea. So yeah, electric cars have always had the potential for regen and torque shifting. It took Hyundai to make it work with the Ioniq 5 N synthesizing a DCT feel and RPM feedback and it’s what performance track drivers have been waiting for. Electric cars will never be the same. You can bet BMW and Audi are back on the drawing board.
Add Cadillac to that list . . . czcams.com/video/GE5hmc6ACMA/video.html

If I have not got the EV6 GT a few months ago, I would have tried to get this. But my understanding is there is a long queue.

How did you find the fake engine noise?
I hope they stick with 300 mile range and shrink the battery mass, rather than aim for 600 mile range with the same mass. I hope they could get the curb weight (well) under 4,000 lb. And use a proper skid plate so that the car isn't automatically written off (and not covered by warranty) when you run over something.
Cool review as always Motoman and the performance looks to be impressive but from the perspective of a grumpy old man I'd skip the "N"-onsense...fake rev limiter, throttle blips, exhaust burble, etc. 😁
If you don't want it, you can turn it off anytime. optional
I want a clutch betal, so that my left feet ca have complete control over h ow I deal in the power.
Most importantly Motoman, were the cooled seats any good?
Can't say I even noticed the car was equipped with heated and/or cooled seats. This was one of those days where we were chock a block getting all that footage both on the track and where Hyundai didn't want us snooping around (Tires/brakes):)
My view is different. I disagree that there's a need to invest in specifically making EVs weigh as much of ICE performance cars.
I actually think car companies should put their money toward something completely different. I think that car companies should double down on their push for EVs, but establish a framework for buying used battery packs from EV and plug-in hybrid owners, then use those batteries as stationary storage.
To your point, yes, EVs are heavy. But the energy consumed per km/mile of an EV compared to a gasoline car is so little, I just don't agree with you that the weight argument is a real problem.
The cost of DC fast charging 'is' a problem. People are paying demand charges so high, that it costs almost as much to charge DC as it would otherwise cost to full up with gas. Stationary storage systems consisting of used battery packs should be used as a shock absorber for charging stations. There's plenty of money to be made by taking massive bite out of the demand charge users are currently paying at DC fast charging stations, and also additional revenue from energy arbitrage.
I’m not paying $70,000 for that car, but it is fucking cool as heck! And if I had a ton of money, I’d buy it without a doubt! If I only had 70 grand to spend on a car, I’ll probably buy a mustang GT loaded up or GT 500, C8, Acura Integra, and whatever else is 70 grand that’s not electric..lol
one day, you will ride the E-Bus.
It's so weird to me how they put all this effort into a faux-shifting mechanism, and they back it with 1995 video game engine sounds. Why wouldn't they pump in actual real revving audio?
Also about the algorithm .. it’s not related to likes or subs that much anymore. It’s now going by watch time and if people click on your video when it’s uploaded and new. Try to copy what other car channels use for thumbnails and catchy titles. Your videos are awesome and def deserve way more views . But watch time retention is huge for algo
You are 100% correct. For a LONG time, subscribers have meant zero to actual views. As for your point of watch time, every partner manager of mine tells us the same thing. That is one of the key reasons we still invest a huge amount into production quality even though iPhone theater is what gets views today. All that to say, our watch time (audience retention) is off the charts high and it does not translate to more views. So yes, we are investing other changes you will soon see but I fear a lot of this means nothing . . . CZcams has created a black box they can no longer control. Can't say I have any other intelligent answer as to why some videos/channels do better than others. Thank you for watching and taking the time to share your thoughts.
If i had the money to make this my 2nd car, I would in a heartbeat. But the 200 mi range is a toal deal breaker for a daily
The range is like at 240mi. Hyundai tend to underrated the range of their vehicles since their lawsuit in 2012.
@@JT-fq2bl Well, I was driving this 5N to like 140MPH and messing around on the highway and my range was more like 200. If you drive it hard your range will be greatly decreased.

If I have to choose from pumped sound vs pumped sound + exhaust, I will choose the cleaner version. Comes with other benefits, but that would be the main one. Additionally you can turn all of it off while cruising trough suburbs (or leave on inside only, whatever is your prefference)
You are a very well informed reasonable individual. So why even mention weight when multiple evs are exactly the same weights as their most common ice equivelant? Example tesla m3 vs bmw m3, 3,600-4,000# for both depending on the options&trim selected.
A ford Lightning platinum vs a trx vs ct or rivian r1t dual motor all of them weigh 6,600-6,800# all are awd crew cab trucks with short beds.
A model X weighs less than most premium segment full size 4wd ice suvs it competes against. 5,100-5,300#
The nio et7 we lion semi solid 150kwh pack is 576kg pack weight and enables a real world range of 650+miles.
Weighing just 44# more than the same sized catl nmc chemistry 100kwh pack which can only go about 425 miles.
Semi solid state is here right NOW in multiple Chinese evs enabling sedans to have 130-150kwh pack's vs the current 90-110kwh sedan pack's.
Without significantly increasing the total pack weights. Its just more expensive atm&low volume production to start.
Which means a we lion 100kwh pack would prob weigh 400-500# LESS than a similar 100kwh nmc pack weighs. As the energy density at pack level per their claims is a 44% improvement.
Which would drop say a base model s lr awd 100kwh down to 4,000# or you know 300# LESS than a stock dodge charger hellcat weighs.
Heck a widebody hellcat with full fuel&fluids weighs the exact same as a model S lr does right now!
Both 4dr American built, full size seats 5 adult sedans. Both even cost a similar amount 70-100k+
A model 3 perf with semi solid state cells would drop down to 3,600-3,700# and a sr could get under 3,500# again.
A base ecoboost mustang weighs over 3,500 with fuel&fluids. Gt 5.0s weigh 3,800-4,000#+now. So weight isn't what some claim it is.
A Chevy bolt also weighs within 80-100# of a loaded fueled Ford focus, and both are 5 Dr American made hatches.
The model Y has Honda pilot levels of space but weighs right in between the pilot&rav4 hybrid awd ice model's at 4,100-4,300# 😎
Good question. As a performance car enthusiast and producer of this show, I feel it important to track the weight of each car presented. Why? What gets measured, gets done. What we are finding after driving hundreds of these, weight deltas vary greatly as we progress into EV deployment. We are consistently seeing about 1,000 pounds on most cars, however some are making strides in closing that gap such as BMW and Hyundai. Lucid also gets an honorable mention but the cost is . . . the cost. Can't really speak to the Chinese market because they are not on offer here and to be very frank, Western OEMs are held to a higher standard of engineering, reliability and performance. That will not change should they make inroads into North America.
but the price tho
70k is a hard sell. Thanks for explaining detailed menu options no other car youtubers are being that specific
The average new car price is over $40k these days. This midsize crossover EV is almost as fast as compact BMW M2 CS around Nurburgring. 70k is actually a bargain.
@bbokdoong you're comparing apples to oranges. M2 cs for one is a coupe which drives totally different from a hatchback ev. What people pay a premium for now is not only speed but a driving experience. An old tesla model 3 performance is faster than ioniq and cheaper if you want to compare
@dub88acc M2 and 5N are both performance cars at a similar price point. Comparison is justifiable. Anyway, Tesla model 3 performance may be slightly faster in a straight line, but if you ever take it to the racetrack, it won't even last 1 lap around the track with battery overheating, power drop and brake fade.

I would luv to see a performance comparison between this and the new Porsche Macan Turbo EV! Performance wise this does undercut the macan in price, but not prestige!
A LOT of people have asked me about this but I don't know how fair that would. First: Porsche has a SEVENTY YEAR head start on driving dynamics (although Hyundai has proven with this that they are a QUICK study). And the obvious: Will be a CRAZY price difference. Thus, when one has probably US$50,000-70,000 extra budget, one can do great things!
Trust me, my friend! The 5n platform is about a generation ahead. The battery is different first.
If your stamina can overcome it, 5n can continue to attack the Nure circuit. Until the electricity runs out. This story tells the difference in the completeness of the platform.
Of course, Porsche has a higher mark value. But the price will be high too. I would have used more advanced ingredients for the intestines.
Harvey is the only one who has the most important basic platform for cars.
I own this 5N car, but I would say that I'm hoping this car becomes the Supra of today. A popular fast car with a resonable price.
The weigh, the price, and the range anxiety, are the three things that this car is going to be a hard sell. The one sense that car manufacturer won't be able to get, is the smell of an open exhaust people experience on tracks. A job well done Hyundai, but not complete.
It does get about 250 miles range if driven conservatively.

Are you guys serious? Of course the simulated gear changes works. This is the exact same thing anyone with a simrig at home feels. Even better if you have a motion rig. The Ioniq 5N is like driving in your motion simrig in real life, except you can't go back to the main menu and switch out cars.
Extreme regenerative braking on lift off biased towards the front axil would assist weight transfer allowing for a controlled turn in. Optimized cooling and warming of the batteries in the art of power delivery for a variety of types of use cases is brilliant. Apparently the custom three selectable level suspension is still under wraps. My wish list is to make universal the heating/cooling technology and manual preconditioning across the line up. I want to arrive still preconditioning at 5% to a charger because it charges faster from 5% to 19% where it currently turns off than 19% to 33%. Give us a selectable arrival percentage and preconditioning percentage cut off @hyundai. You can warn us if you think we miscalculated suggesting to turn off preconditioning. Current onboard navigation is too conservative with too high a % arrival turning a three charging trip in to four or five if I followed navigating guidance. Let’s add evelation in to the the navigation and a more graphical interface with charger selection. Any charging selection would be a start with realtime charger rating and availability. Crowd source your own vehicle charging data live as low hanging fruit. Then when the charging curve drops somewhere north of 80% SOC to below 100kW there should be no energy needed to cool the pack after unplugging therefore maximizing energy for motion. All while using what ever navigation I choose or even without connection subscriptions. A manual preconditioning button is like a go pedal cover Tesla. It should stay in place regardless. #2023IONIQ5Owner 🤨
I wonder when they'll bring out an EV with less power so you can go further with the same battery....

With this, not so much. Jason Cammisa keeps it real, and he has honestly said this could have very easily been a huge gimmick that would make Hyundai an absolute laughing stock, but they pulled off and it works really well.
I am not a Hyundai or Kia fan what so every. I think they have always been a budget orientated cars built for people who don't care what they drive. This car is changing my mind :) I have a couple of friends who have had very bad experiences owning Hyundias with blown engines at 19k on the OD and blown transmissions. Maybe and EV Hyundai actually gets rid of that problem?
The Kia Stinger, Hyundai Elantra N, Hyundai Veloster N, Hyundai i30 N, and arguably the Genesis G70 are not budget oriented cars built for people who don't care what they drive.

Why put so much stress on yourself and live in cognitive dissonance? I don't see vegan comparision applicable here. The focus of options mentioned is to provide fun/engagement and auditory feedback. We have lived with ICE for century, it is part of us to feel engagement related to sound and use it as our cues on how car performs (weight transfer, breaking, etc). Why put yourself in a corner that you can't step out of. Not a good analogy in my opinion.
Watch and listen to what Jason Cammisa had tonsay about it.
fake gears on an EV = stupid
Impressive but just wait a year and get one for over half off. Kia/Hyundai EV cars depreciate like a rock on an anvil being pushed out of an airplane with 1,000x gravity.
We'll see. I could see this one holding its value better.
@@flybriur Nah, it won't. It's a $70k Hyundai. I can guarantee it won't hold its value. No way.
Hi trollboy haha😂😂
Horrible. The no shifting is WHY they have an advantage plus the battery trq. That is so stupid sounding
Says the donut who’s never driven the car. 😂
The car clearly isn't for you then. By the way, you can completely turn off the feature and drive it like a regular EV.
you talk to much... this car has already proven itself against the tesla 1020 hp....
Tesla is the best car company ever! No gas stations, No oil changes, No smog check, No corrupt dealership, No catalytic converter and as fast as a $550,000 Lamborghini
Yes Tesla is trash car
smaller battery and Hydrogen fuel cell
Fake is fake ..no thanks ..complete joke
First 10 minutes I put this on possible buy list……then at $70,000…..delete
It's faster and about same premium as an M3 over a 330i...
@@bradleyhall4315 You have to have rocks in your head to choose this over a M2 at the same price point.
@@lukewalker1051having owned an M3, I rather have this ya donut.
@@lukewalker1051not really. Depends on use. If you are not tracking it…Ioniq wins. If you are tracking it a few times a year you need m3 becuase ev is not track ready and runs out of juice very quickly
I just leased one for 2 years for 25K, it is way worth it. But I thought like you in the beginning. This car easily beat my expectations.
First, it was fake engine noises, and now fake gears? This is proof that EVs are trying too hard to win us over.
You’re too small minded you missed the entire point.😂
Dont knock it till you try it. Listen to what Jason Cammisa had to say about it - the guy is a respected auto journalist and a clear gearhead/petrolhead.
Consider the profound irony. A more expensive car to simulate what already exists which is a more convenient car to own powered by gasoline. Even though this car reviewed is faster, lets pick a car like an Elantra N or Civic Type R at less than $50K as a basis for comparison.
But there is much more. The architecture of this car is still electric and with that comes all the aversion to owning an electric car from less range, to where to charge, added weight you mention, but biggest elephant in the room? The battery that degrades over time and what kind of depreciated hunk of metal you are left with after say 8 years. This is a throwaway $70K car when the battery needs replacement because of the dramatic depreciation of electric cars including Tesla's.
Let's say you don't want to own it but lease it and not worry about the uber expensive 70+ KW/hr battery needing to be replaced with much higher cost than an engine replacement in a gas car that isn't a foregone conclusion in 8 years. Who in their right mind wants to lease a car that it harder to charge, takes longer to charge and has less range than a gas car? What is the point?
Truth is, EV's are dumb. Lots of dumb Americans, some of whom have bought them and regretted doing so.
As an automotive engineer, I appreciate your review and discussion about this maybe first foray into 'simulating' a performance gas car in an EV. It is at its best a feat of engineering and at its worse a joke and sad commentary on people that would consider one...lol.
lol you sound like a graduate of Trump “University” 😂
@@TimothySims-it5lf I just hope a sucker like you buys an EV of any ilk. That is called poetic justice.
EV manufacturers have got every CZcamsr on the planet reviewing their EV’s in hopes ONE person might buy LMAO. I don’t know how anyone thinking a car that’s powered by highly toxic and volatile chemicals was going to be better than the “toxic ICE vehicles” at least ICE fires can be easily extinguished and properly recycled which you can not do with an EV. What were we going to do with 500k toxic battery disposals annually. Americans are so naive
The batteries will ultimately be recycled. Thr vast majority of the battery can be reused.
Unfortunately it’s a Hyundai therefore it’s automatically not good and I’d be skeptical of anyone praising them given the company’s astroturfing and bots praising them in the comments.
Automatically not good....why do you watch reviews if you have it all figured out?
Biased much? LOL

For something that looks like just another cheap hot hatch, it’s way overpriced! Sure it’s pretty fast but the Model 3 Performance is faster and would probably out run this car on the track as well . Buying the new Model 3 Performance instead
I am impressed by your stereotype.
Model 3 Performance It may be zero hundred, but on long distance circuits, the m3p will have performance limitations and run out due to lack of battery thermal management and brake thermal management.
@@Hooroong2 Sure but how many guys are really going to track their daily driver. Besides the new Model 3 Performance has a new track package as well but I could care less. Sure the Ioniq 5 N might be a better track car but I wouldn’t pay $20k more for that over a M3P !
I love the creativity. Do I think this will catch on? No, not really. But if you never try you’ll never innovate.
Give me more performance plug-in hybrids (Porsche Panamera/Cayenne S e-Hybrid)
You bring up the elephant in the room. My answer: This will appeal to the 1% of the 1%. All that to say, I am glad it exists.
