@@DJ_Mescalino the thing is, they may have the same lyrics but are both singing about very different things, Trent = singing about his drug addiction // Cash = singing about his life both equally amazing and both their own they may have same lyrics but the meaning behind the songs are vastly different

@@Srsli Well Cash also faced addiction, But i do agree that cash spreads the story wider over his career as where Trent may only describe a small period. Just for some reason Cash-es version resonates deeper with me. I believe even Trent did so as well and said "this is now your song" to Johnny Cash . Regardless of the version Trent does deserve credits for writing those lyrics.

This song definitely stands on its own as a good song, but in order to really get why it's so amazing (and to really get why everyone in the crowd is so into it), you have to hear it in the context of the entire Downward Spiral album. It's a concept album.
EDIT: And by the way, there's a reason this album is a QUADRUPEL platinum album. It's amazing, and truly an incredibly major piece of American culture. It would be well worth your time to listen to the album, or even react to the album. It's almost like classical literature-it has had such a profound influence on music and culture since its release that it truly is a work of art that everyone should take in at some point in their lives. It's just that important of an album.

The emotion, the sounds, the lights, the overall vibe, it was unlike anything I've ever experienced. I felt like I was floating in the dark and at the end he turned on the bright lights and you could see everything in the room and it brings you back and ur like "holy fuck.... The original live video performance from the O.G. Downward Spiral tour (which was their video on MTV for the song) is even more mind blowing than this was. It's use of projected film on semi transparent screen & the raw reactions from the crowd to a relatively new song are astounding.
Also - his original performance audio captured the lyrics more clearly , as it's become more purely expressive (inaudible whispers) thru the years. This is a good thing - as his confidence the audience knows the lyrics is so high, he basically disappears into the song & let's it's quieting tones take over, almost completely.

Please, check some symphonic Black Metal. You won't regret it.
''Dimmu Borgir - Progenies of the great apocalypse'' at Wacken 2012 or ''Gateways'' same show.

Johnny Cash did a killer cover of Hurt. He was country of course. But The Man In Black was very influential on a lot of metal guys. Myself included.

You NEEEEEED to do the entire Downward Spiral album.
Also, there's one line that gives away the meaning of the song and album. "The needle tears a hole. The old familiar sting."
Heroin. The whole thing is about a descent into heroin addiction.

do you use a AMP for your HD650 headphones alex? you should it makesthe music sound way louder and better detailed. your going to need a powerful amp for thoses headphones... if you dont have a amp i highly reccomand it , it makes your headphones sound 10000000 times better. better everything(lows, mids, highs, bass) vocals also. :) BTW the song sanctified has good bass guitar, its a very mellow song.
