NIN version is a young man who has nothing to live for and Johnny Cash's about an old man who is tired of living
That's well said 👍
I would say "ok with dying". He lived his full life, apologized for his faults, embraced his strengths, and takes none of it back.
i dont think hes tired of living in this one. He is just looking back on his life and realizing his whole castle, his whole empire is crashing down upon him and theres nothing more he can do
lies, he did interviews
Incorrect he is a Oldman who wants to relive life with his wife
The original is about a man broken and beaten by addiction dragging himself through the mud to get back to sobriety. The Cash version is about a man at the end of his life looking back on all that he was and watching it crumble away from him.
i'm all about the Cash version, we all have regrets so that connects with me more, as i've never had an addiction, except video games but that dont count.
They both had similar drug addictions that almost killed them
I agree, completely. I think different people, in different parts of their life, will identify with different versions. I like them both!
the human experience doesn't repeat, but it does rhyme.
(totally "borrowed" that idea)
Dont think the original is all about addiction at all...the downward spiral is telling a story and its just telling the end. Its a broken human, living with regret/emptiness.
Think people focus on the needle lyric way too much, completely misinterpret the song and its conclusion to the story.
That was the last time Johnny Cash was ever on camera before he passed away
Well in a music video atleast.
I think he did an Interview for MTV after the death of June :)
@@nakedbigbosssnake92
Pretty sure this song was after June passed.
@@bigguy1164
Chill bud "mythologising" seriously? The man is a legend. Everything about him is mythology at this point.
@@bigguy1164
How about you stop being so offended by people just making an innocent mistake, or making up your own bullshit to try and ruin other people's warm memories of the man and the song. Taking any excuse to start a fight in the comments because it's the only way you can interact with other humans. You're sad and pathetic. Take your negativity somewhere else pal.
@@bigguy1164
Bruv your actually the biggest loser I've seen here. Instead of trying to respond to my insult, you try to pull a "no u". Jeez, how old are you? I called you lonely and pathetic first. Be a bit more creative next time and don't just copy what I called you. Then again, your limited intelligence probably makes it hard to think of a good insult. Go and give your mum a hug and stop screaming at her for tendies, you sorry little neckbeard.
“His voice sounds like butterscotch and tobacco...”. Best damn description ever.
When Johnny Cash passed away mere months after this song's release Trent Reznor stated that this is now a Johnny Cash song. It's truly one of the most emotional pieces of music ever recorded, brings me to tears every time I hear the cover version.
i also heard he sold the rights to the song for $1.
@@Bladedcloud6159 really? wow if true that's pretty admirable
Only after he saw the video he didn't like it when he first heard it.
@@bigguy1164 that's because the original is garbage.
@@bigguy1164 I'm sorry to hear you're tone deaf. Can't imagine a worse fate. So much beauty and life in music and you can't enjoy any of it 🤷🏼♂️
To be honest i am not a fan of that kind of cutting. Everytime i took the vibe, the cut took it away from me.
Agreed. Back to back would work better imo.
Yep, I would prefer the full reactions back to back too.
Love the concept but the editing is awful. To cut back and forth like that is infuriating to watch.
Also wasn't he NOT going to watch the music videos???
You do understand this bypasses copyright alot easier and keeps it from being taken down?
won't lie, Hurt (Johnny Cash) is one of the only songs I could listen too repeatedly, know what's coming, and still make me cry.
that and One More Light by Linkin Park.... especially the Jimmy Kimmel live performance
Same... Johnny cash put a lifetime of emotion in it and you can tell
For what it's worth, after Johnny Cash died, Sevendust covered it in his honor. Also very good.
If I'm just listening to the song I'm fine...if I watch the music video I'm a bawling
@@BendyDH mine is Valentine’s Day by Linkin Park that gets me choked up.
"Nothing compares to you"

This.
Cornell's will always be my favorite, personally. He made such a beautiful blues rendition
Or Zdogg's parody of O'Connor's version... czcams.com/video/EX1Ovx8guCg/video.html
Yes!
Cornell has the better version by far
The woman in the video standing behind Johnny Cash is his wife June Carter Cash She died four months before he did.
You need more NIN, "The Perfect Drug" "Every Day Is Exactly the Same" "The Hand That Feeds" and not Closer like everyone else. I love NIN.
I'd like to add "Mr. Selfdestruct" to the list, and second skipping closer.
I'm a huge fan of the bass line in "Only"
"Every Day is Exactly the Same" (and just about all of With Teeth, quite frankly) and "Reptile" (anyone else had an ex- like that?) I agree that Closer or Closer covers can be skipped. (He actually has a "The Hand That Feeds" reaction already.) Let me also recommend "Wish" and "Head Like a Hole", but I'd react to both albums! So many great songs on each album ("Broken" and "Pretty Hate Machine" respectively.)
Definitely
I'd love to see a reaction to "The Frail/The Wretched", particularly the live version from "The Fragile" tour
(I'm pretty sure it can be found on Vimeo if not on CZcams). It just has so many powerful emotions packed into it before the vocals even start. "Reptile" would be another good song to react to.
The Johnny cash version is the greatest cover of all time. But nothing can take away from Trent writing that song. One of my two favourite songs ever.
I Hung My Head was pretty damn good too
Metallica” Turn the Page” and the original from the GREAT Bob Segar.
Metallica hands down even though I love Bob Segar
Both were good, but the Seger version showed more of the weariness of being on the road. More emotion and love his raspy voice.
Yesssss!
@@matthewdrake4385 I absolutely agree!
Not trashing Metallica, I love them and Seger, but Metallica could have done a little more to the cover. Seemed kind of influenced by Thin Lizzy, which isn’t an insult as well, but lacked soul. I could see Motörhead cover the song and knock it out.
The fast cuts between versions was distracting, is there any way you would mind doing the next one where you listen to both versions in full then tell us your thoughts? Love this concept just was so jarring & distracting IMO. Much love & respect.
i think that's best done by yourself when judging which cover won, his way keeps the video from getting too long, yet gives you a side by side listen to both versions, so while it may seem jarring, it's best for the video.
@@UltimateGamerCC Is it tho?
@@chazhartwayne6493 yes, i mean for one thing reactors always have to worry about Copyright, doing two songs uncut like that would be putting his channel in double jeopardy, this way is more on the "Fair Use" scope and it protects his channel.
besides everybody should go to the original videos and listen to them back to back for themselves, if they really want to, that's not what the video series is meant for.
I honestly feel its better fir the reaction itself when done this way. You can tell he listened to each in full amd reacted to them individually. Which is the better purpose of the video to truly co.pare the two versions...
I agree, Jamie. I was really excited for this one, but I had to stop watching after the first cut. Should never do a side-by-side before a one-on-one.
Nine Inch Nails.. this is so dark.. Johnny Cash.. this is depressing....
I get drunk and cry listening to Johnny’s version
Do more Johnny cash. Such a wide range of songs to pick from.

This was Johnny's goodbye...
I'd rather you edit yourself watching one then the other, because I find it jarring to have the mashup. Thanks, man!
So the Cash version takes on a whole new meaning when you know his past and how he treated his late wife, family, and friends. Its him apologizing before his life came to a close.
Not a fan of the editing, it breaks the momentum and each song is too different, you can't feel it as a watcher
yeah, that was weird af

This.
I prefer Seether even though I grew up on George Michael (born 1981).

Even Trent himself told he prefers Johnny's cover

@@zeitok8 Trent said that in an interview
@@birdgirl69 I know he finally understood how powerful the Cash version was with the video, it is a very personal song for Reznor and that the Cash version also helped him re-evaluate his song, his feelings, that is the power of art, but what he has said that one or the other is better, I can't find that.
@@zeitok8 i know i remember reading that some years ago
When the original artist basically tells the covering artist “it’s your song now”, you know that not only is the cover amazing, but there is a huge level of respect between the artists.
"I barely skimmed the surface of Nine Inch Nails."
Alex... Alex, you need to fix this. Now.
I had to stop the video and make sue someone else stated this. This comment needs more up-votes.
For your next original Vs cover, please do The Sound Of Silence, originally by Simon and Garfunkel, covered by Disturbed. Honestly one of my favourite songs by Disturbed, and is a real showcase of David Draiman's amazing vocals.
In my opinion you should listen to the whole song in my opinion, back to back
lol he does but he edited them together so that you can hear the comparisons.
@@UltimateGamerCC okay touché, but I think he should show it like that too
This is the greatest cover song ever made johnny cash is a legend his legacy is forever...
I might argue Disturbed's cover of Sound of Silence as #1, but it's close my dude.
I think that you really need to listen to the whole Downward Spiral album to really get the feel for the NIN version better.
Skip "Big Man with a Gun". Even Trent Reznor said he doesn't like it in an Interview. He made sure to clarify that it wasn't for the content, but that the song itself just wasn't as good as he would prefer, if my memory serves. But, several Nine Inch Nails albums are just solid to listen to in their entireties!
I absolutely agree. That album is for me something that really should be listened to in it’s entirety at least once. You get to feel the range of emotions better that way.

The original & the cover both are splendid, gimme different feelings...one is cold & the other is warm
Both are good songs the cash version was on what would become his last album after his wife died then he died of a broken heart only 5 months later
"Hurt" was on the "American IV" album and after that he recorded "American V" after Junes death. June is even in the music video. It was June, who said to Roseanne, who is Johnnys daughter: "Beware of the video. It´s a tough one." And there was another cut, with even more scenes, that was even emotionally harder to watch. But it never got released or made public.
Please don't edit the videos like this... Start with the original, the cover :-) Grat reaction Lawyer, please give us more reactions to original vs covers :-)
Yeah I agree. This way saves more time but its kind of jaunting going back and forth
Trent Reznor remembers the first time he saw the video for Johnny Cash's cover of his 1994 song "Hurt." "Tears started welling up," he said. "I realized it wasn't really my song anymore. It just gave me goose bumps up and down my spine. It's an unbelievably powerful piece of work."
The man who sold the world
David Bowie
Nirvana
To piggie back off of that one he could do Heroes by David Bowie and the cover by The Wallflowers.
I grew up a huge fan of both NIN and Johnny. When I heard johnny’s version, it friggin WRECKED me.
Trent Reznor even said he unknowingly wrote that song for Johnny to cover, admitting that Cash did it best
Wrong. Chinese whispers, He didn't like it when he first heard it, it didn't sit right with him. And then he saw the video and it changed his opinion and it allowed him to hear the song in a different context. Its a very personal song for Reznor and never said Cash did it best. No one bothered with the song until the video came out. I had the Cash album when it was released, no one was going wow until the video.
And trent will never perform that song ever again

even bob dylan said basically jimi's version is a better way to do the song.
I always thought it was Hendrix's song until my anesthetist told me it was a cover of a Bob Dylan song during my c-section last year (it was on my deliver playlist lol). Random fact to learn while being sewn back together 🤣
Trent Reznor said after hearing this "this is his song now"
How about Johnny Cash vs. Soundgarden "Rusty Cage"
Cash did rusty cage!!!! 🙀
Fuck Yes!
Mr. Cash also covered Rusty Cage by Soundgarden
Johnny is an OG highwayman he’s an absolute legend. RIP The man in black JOHNNY CASH
Johnny's version is the sound of a man giving the eulogy to his own funeral. He's saying "goodbye" and "I'm sorry".
OOOOOOO This is a cool idea, Alex!!! I'm interested to see where you take this!
Didn't realize the original won a Grammy, while the cover is widely considered the better version. Johnny just knocked it out of the park, taking these lyrics about feeling backed into a corner and delivering them in the style of someone truly backed into one. I do love the way Trent sings "you could have it all".
It's considered better by some people because it's more commercial. Critics consider NIN version better due to production.
Solid choice! I was introduced to this song by Cash, He is one of my favorite vocalists. I agree two sides of the same song, both epic and emotional in their own way. Cash does win and it became even more resonating knowing that was his last Music Video!
God rest his soul. Johnny Cash fills a void in many hearts. Old and young. Being in my early 20s and growing up listening to all genres, I often find myself coming back to him. He is a true wonder of the world.
Nine Inch Nails vs. Asking Alexandria - "Closer"
Yes 🙏🏼
Someone else reacted to this today and I’ve been on a two hour crying binge watching reactions and I don’t know how I missed that you reacted to this yesterday. Let the crying continue.
Everytime I hear the Johnny Cash version it always gives me goosebumps and that's the one that always gets me teary-eyed 😭😭
And that's why I like the Johnny Cash version that much better 🤘🤘
Rest in Peace Johnny Cash
As an inactive alcoholic for 8 years so far, I often listen to Johnnys version to remind me of what I lost while I was active, and what I have gained now.
Hits home every time.
Both versions have their musical merit for me, but Johnnys version, to me, feels more like listening to someones story, while NINs sounds more like someone telling you their story. Semantics, I know, but the former means I can more easily reconnect with the bittersweet emotional cocktail that is having lost friends, family, part of myself, my potential future on the one hand, and now having found other friends, other family, and another path in life on the other.
I miss what I lost, but I love what I gained.
But part of me will always be trapped in that period; I am someone else, but I am also still right there.
Johnny Cash will always be the person I think of when I hear this song. The least singer of NIN says that when he listened to Johnny's version, he forgot he was the one who wrote the song.
This 1 one of the last songs Johnny Cash recorded before passing. Nine Inch Nails loved his cover so much, that they pretty much said it's Johnny's song now.
And hurt by johnny cash was also used in the movie trailer of Logan and it was equally emotional 😭
As always, love your reactions, you and KTF were the first two reaction artists I got into. One suggestion for these cover vs cover reactions, show the whole song reaction. As a fan idc if it's a 20 minute video... I will watch all of it! Keep up the hard work!
Trent said in an interview that when he heard the audio track of Johnny's version he wasn't particulaly impressed; however, once he and the people with him watched the video, Trent said at that moment he knew it was no longer his song...it was Johnny's.
Having gone through the addiction and helplessness and that never ending feeling of dread that there no way back etc. For me personally I relate to NIN more, I like cash version, but NIN is more powerful, and more raw. Its the purest from of the emotion.
As a suggestion, listening to the whole NIN album "The Downward Spiral" could be fun, its an album which very much needs to be listened to in one go from start to finish. Hurt is one of the songs featured on it.
I first heard this song as a teenager. Now, in my 30s, I know exactly the feeling he's singing about.
You say you want to be my friend and stay by me, but that's what everyone else said before they gave up and left.
You say you want me around because you love me, but keep what I have: the memories, the good things I've done, my material possessions
because if you try keep ME, hoping to experience all of that again, you're just going to be disappointed.
Planet Caravan - Original by Black Sabbath, cover by Pantera
I knew the NIN version in high school/college, and then Cash’s came out several years after my college graduation. The first time I heard it was late at night, I had CMT on in the background, and when it came on, my brain was confused because I recognized the melody but it sounded, well, DIFFERENT, right, and then Cash started singing and I realized what was happening and I was fuckin mesmerized.
Anyway, Alex, long story short I agree with you. As a fan of both artists I give John the edge on this one.
Probably a billion other comments have mentioned this, but after Cash’s cover, Trent Reznor /NIN stopped playing “Hurt” for a while at shows. Trent loves Johnny’s cover, was blown away by it. I guess when Rick Rubin called him to talk about John doing the song, Trent was like sure, cool, but he couldn’t imagine what it would be like, and when they sent him the demo he was a little afraid to listen to it but he totally digs it.
I think you got the meaning right. It definitely sounds like drug addiction and maybe recovery, and certainly apologizing to a loved one for all the pain he caused and basically feeling like a failure and a ruiner of good things.
Cash had his struggles with addiction. The love of his life, June Carter (the lady in the video) was his second wife. He started messing with June while still married to his first wife. He also slept with all of June’s sisters. He was a mess. He had a lot of goodness in him but a lot of frailty and darkness too. And at this stage in his life, when he did this song, he was diabetic and so the line “the needle tears a hole / the old familiar sting” carries a deeper meaning in a sense... and you’re right, when he sings it it’s as an old man looking back on his life and all the things he’s done, and struggling with illness and the specter of death hanging over him - “what have I become, my sweetest friend? Everyone I know goes away in the end.” I mean I cry EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. And that’s a testament to Trent’s lyrics that they can be applied that way, differently than the original meaning, without changing a word (although you for sure caught that John did change one word).
Definitely recommend listening to more NIN and more Cash. Both are great artists with large catalogs to be explored.

React to some more Johnny Cash!! "The Man Comes Around", "God is Gonna Cut You Down", "I've Been Everywhere"... so many songs to choose from!
Also, I can’t listen to Johnny’s version and not cry.
As someone who has been a fan of NIN for most of his life, someone who loves The Downward Spiral and the story it tells...
I have never cried to Hurt before Cash did it. Knowing that the song to him was his pain losing his wife, dealing with old age and knowing that none of his accomplishments could bring back the happiness he once had... Hits so much more.
I wanna say that I’m fairly new to the channel and I love your content. I saw this video and couldn’t resist tapping on it. The NIN version broke my heart but eventually became my inspiration to create music of my own. Keep it up and you’ll keep snagging my attention. Thanks again
So a little back story on these two versions.
Trent Reznor doesn't like people covering his music. He thinks that people should "write their own damn songs". He never gives out the rights to the song to be covered.
When Johnny contacted him and asked if he could do a version of it, Trent said no. Just like he always had. He didn't care that it was one of the biggest names in music asking to use his material. He stood his ground and told the man he wouldn't allow it.
Johnny went into the studio anyway behind Trent's back and recorded the song and the video. He sent it to Trent and told him to watch it. Apparently Trent was so pissed off that Johnny went behind his back and did it anyway after specifically telling him no, that he tossed the tape on his desk and didn't touch it for several months.
Eventually Trent decided to the video. He called up Johnny and told him he could use the song.
In interviews that followed, he said that the song no longer belongs to him, but now belongs to Johnny. It's become his song, and that he's grateful to be a part of that history.
NIN Hurt is amazing, however Johnny Cash Hurt ALWAYS gives me goosebumps and a tear. I find it very hard to listen to sometimes as it pulls all the emotional strings for me. 😊👍
I always think these two versions are fun to compare. Cash's version is about an old man faced by his own mortality with a lifetime of regrets apologizing to the people he's hurt, asking for forgiveness, acknowledging his screw ups and taking responsibility before he dies. The original is more like a young man trying desperately to be something better and struggling, falling in to depression, hating himself and ready to give up. Both are about pain but a different kind of pain, where Cash is feeling years of regret, Trent Reznor is lost and raw. Great versions but most people can resonate with Johnny's version a little easier I think, it's not as self-loathing or as raw.
The Johnny Cash version is one of my favorite songs ever ❤
I love Johnny Cash. I 'm almost 50 and had his records from Mom and older Aunts and Uncles. I think "Hurt" is a very special case of a song that easily means something to people, that wasn't necessarily intended. Just my opinion but I think Cash's version is him regretting things done over a full life. The original by NIN, is about losing everything and everyone to heroin addiction. Both are beautiful and iconic, but no NIN version first means Johnny never records his version. NIN hands down. Best song of the 90s imho
Johnny always brings a tear to my eye with this song everytime i hear it ..reminds me of my father so much.
You still need to see the video tribute that the WWE did for Eddie Guerrero with Johnny's version of this song.
All three versions give me goosebumps and fuck me up.
And even Trent Reznor (singer of NIN) said that Johnny made this song his once he heard the cover version.
The one time you can actually say the cover was hit out of the park by Johnny Cash where it felt more deeply and dramatically than Trent's usual swelling of his vocals. Johnny takes you there spiritually.
Original vs Cover: Genesis v Disturbed - Land of Confusion
In an interview, Trent Reznor, the singer of NIN, said that he he was flattered that Johnny wanted to do a cover, but didn't expect much. He heard the track, and said "okay, it's like someone kissing your girlfriend". After that he was sent the music video, he said it all made sense, and that the song was his now.

Can't listen to the Johnny Cash version without tearing up. Every single time.
So was Johnny Cash just sitting around listening to Nine Inch Nails and thought hey I think I'll cover that one?
Rubin had sent the song to Cash before, but the veteran musician couldn’t hear beyond the industrial noise and anguished howl that featured in the original. “I think it was hard for him to hear it,” Rubin told Rolling Stone. “So I sent him the lyrics. I said, ‘Just read the lyrics. If you like the lyrics, then we'll find a way to do it that will suit you’.
But Cash was convinced by Rubin’s belief in the song and agreed to try recording it at the producer’s home in LA. Instead of being a song about a young individual on the downward spiral to self-destruction, Cash interpreted the lyrics as a man at the end of his life. The result is heartbreaking as the veteran musician sings in a quavering, emotional voice’.
Trent told Johnny that he did such a good job that he owns that song now. He was blown away
