When Twitter Ruins Your Life: The Glee Prom Spoiler Saga

  • In early 2011, a Glee extra (Nicole) took to Twitter and tweeted a cryptic code that spoiled the upcoming prom episode of Glee, revealing who was the Season 2 Prom King and Queen. The show, with its massive fandom and onslaught of Gleeks began to send hateful messages towards Nicole for leaking the highly anticipated plot point. Following a major Gleek fan backlash and some tweets from a Glee creator and producer, Nicole deleted her Twitter and the series of events that followed led to her career being ruined. Soon after Nicole began to speak out, attempting to correct some information that news sites got wrong about her and the spoiler...

      @conan4real Před rokem +37

      it happens with every fandom, media with an anti bullying focus is likely being pushed towards kids and teens. In this case, Glee's demographic is mainly tween girls. The reason Glee seems like it has a bad fandom is really just sexism at the end of the day, it's no better or worse then any other piece of media, people just enjoy harassing teen girls lol.
      The cycle is something like fanbase erupts -> a woman does something stupid -> men attack her for a relatively normal mistake -> unrelated people see it because of how quickly everything snowballed -> unrelated men comment on how stupid she is -> blows up more -> cycle continues. Most fandom stories you hear are about women for a reason.
      Rick and Morty, Homestuck, Stranger Things, Marvel, etc, they aren't any different.

IIRC there were quite a few people who worked on the show that were known to post weekly spoilers
    after brad’s tweet though, everyone switched up. spoilers were suddenly wrong and immoral, and anyone who posted them was considered bad. the former (highly respected) leakers were now getting mass amounts of hate

That said, she in no way deserved death threats or the backlash she got and Brad should have kept that offline instead of confirming the spoiler and berating a 21 year old publicly, and Glee not having NDA's is beyond stupid, we have to sign a bunch of NDA's and it formalizes what we can and can't say, not having that blurs the line between what can and can't be said.

This just sounds like the creator being an ass, no? He himself leaked the info by openly confirming it, he could have chosen to not comment or deny or spread counter rumours... when she said it it was just rumours.
      Essentially someone who worked with them in the past but was no longer involved, had no contract swearing them to secrecy even when they were involved, and was now just a gossip blogger got told something and posted it so the creator went out to get her kicked out the entire industry. She deserved none of the cyber bullying or the death threats, that was completely unwarranted, but her career being busted afterwards was just a natural consequence waiting to happen. @Olivia-ek9ib Před rokem +3

      If you type "tom holland spoiling stuff" in the youtube search bar you will find thirteen minute long videos of him spoiling Marvel movies. Not only is he still employed, but Marvel is now using him as an excuse to shove as many actors into interviews as possible to "babysit" him. Something tells me if Nicole had played a main character she would have never been treated this way by fans OR been blacklisted from Hollywood.

    • @ninade
      @ninade Před rokem +9

      @@Olivia-ek9ib I agree that it is unfair that Tom has no repercussions and her career was ruined over this, but I think it does make a difference that Tom already was an established actor and the Marvel movies use his "accidental spoilers" as marketing tool imo. I think she would still have been in trouble even as a main character tho, since the Glee fandom was crazy like that. That's bloody weird, but I'm not surprised she'd do that if she got so much attention from spoilers before. The internet is vicious, and death threats and harassment are never permissible. At the same time, she set herself up for backlash doing that. News stations apparently lying about her being fired is also pathetic. This whole thing is weird..
