- In late 2018, images and videos of YourGirlfriend22 began to be used as reaction memes on stan twitter and soon became viral, due to their hilarious snapchat captions. With an English accent and overusing the word "luv", the girl, unbeknownst to her, was soon crowned a British Meme Icon. However, the meme wasn't everything that it first seemed and the origins of the memes had many people thinking "I was like…woah luv…tha caugh me off guard."

i thought people assumed she was british because of her make up. the foundation being a couple shades too dark, the concealer lips, the lashes, the heavily filled in brows. isn't there like a whole meme/running internet joke that that's how British teens/young women do their make up in certain areas?

Please consider finding the backstory behind a meme that follows a similar pattern to the yourgirlfriend22 memes, except it’s just a single pic, a selfie that a woman took on a bus with the snapchat caption “so glad got that done. Nothing to worry about ever now”, there’s different variations with a range of filters on the woman but the caption stays the same. I have no idea if its origins are Irish Twitter or a different internet subculture but i don’t have sufficient answers.

This girl went to an adjacent high school of mine in Overland park kansas back in like 2015. She showed up to our football game once and everyone was excited bc she was the girl who got pregnant in eighth grade. I've followed her ever since i was shocked she became a meme and is probably the most famous thing to come out of OP besides the most popular girls in school LOL

It’s the orangey tan, bleach blonde hair, and makeup. Americans haven’t had this look en masse since the 2000’s. It stopped around 2008 for us.
I remember this meme going viral and I think a big part of why ppl thought she was British was cuz she looked like a stereotypical Essex girl. Essex girls were a huge meme at the time and she had a v similar look + a heavy tan like they do lol.
My groupchat used to quote these memes incessantly. Saw the thumbnail and the words “woah luv..” SLAPPED me across the face. Thanks for the memories

This video KILLS me. Jessica and I went to the same middle school together and she was a grade above me. When I first saw the meme circling around social media I was confused because I wasn't sure how it got so famous, but it was hilarious to me. She also got pregnant when she was in 8th grade and she kept the baby so she a teen mom lol.

I honestly think what made people (including myself) mistake her a British woman was the fact that she had the same type of facial features as certain British women, a la Katie Price such as the over-tanned skin, thick eyebrows and even thicker eyelashes.
The super thick spidery lash aesthetic was "in" during the late 2000s and up to mid 2010s. I always thought it was such a trashy-cute look that my lame flat short lashes could never replicate. The L'oreal black and white (1+2 step mascara) helped a bit. Flare lulu lemons, the bath and body works in everyones bag and locker and claw clips and EOS lip balms everywhere.
Her orangey tan, makeup, bleach blonde hair, facial features, and demeanor are like any stereotypical young British woman from certain areas of the UK. She looks like she could have been on “Snog, Marry, Avoid” during the episode where they interviewed girls from Essex about why they are over tanned and wear sweats and rollers in their hair outside the house 💀. She shut needs a Juicy Couture track suit and she’ll be spot on.

I was on stan twitter in the early 2010s before "stan" was really a word that was used for us and it kinda bums me out how much more fun it's become in the years since. Like we just posted tumblr style edits of Marina and the Diamonds music video screengrabs, now there are tons of memes with their own lore, it's insane. I listen to metal now, which does not have an online community that is even half as fun

I mean, most Americans have British ancestry and her name is seemingly English in origin, so it’s not crazy to say she “looks” British when she may have the exact same genetics as a girl from the UK. So if she wears things that are more popular in England she “looks British”
I see ur point, but most white Americans are actually of German ancestry (says Google/Wikipedia). Most white people here are a mix of ethnicities tho so she likely is partly British.
The most common ancestral origins in America are German and Irish. But also, Brits don’t wear simply southern tshirts during Christian girl autumn💀

That’s cuz this look was super popular in the Bible Belt, but her features give off British vibes, so I can see how people mistook her for an Essex girl. I believe this look is still popular in certain places of the UK, but in the US it’s mostly out of fashion.

The reason why people decided she was British because at the time I remember there was those "Essex girl" memes going around about the young British girls on tiktok that would get extremely fake tanned, bleach their hair to death, wear icy nude lipstick with lip filler and these outrageously thick fake lashes or clumped on mascara. I remember seeing them on tiktok doing those cringe musicly type videos or captioning their posts about how they weren't white but black and it would spread to twitter, Instagram and eventually i think commentary yt. Kinda like how woahvicky used to say she was black. It was a bunch of rage baiting so people started making fun of their accents and that became such a meme that they applied it to this woman when she fit the Essex girl aesthetic.

There was even a rumor because of that tweet, she was going to be on Dr. Phil. I even made new edits of the picture that were included in this video ... Unpopular opinion but she doesn't look British. Having grown up British through the chav era, theres a certain look to a "british girl". The clothes really give it away, and admittedly some of the photos she really does look British, but the majority of them she doesn't. Some Americans are stuck in 2008 fashion with the stripey vests and layering, but British girls wear wear more up to date or stereotypical clothing, i.e. tracksuits. Also the backgrounds of photos really give it away. You can just tell by houses, decor, cars, even landscapes sometimes. I feel like the people that thought she was British are American, and have never actually seen an authentic British female "chav" nor been around them for a significant amount of time. Even then i wouldn't say chav, that's such a niche look, but chav-esque for sure. Anyway, its lichrelly madness luv xx

For a brief point my TikTok fyp was all people with exaggerated tans and thick eyebrows seemingly making fun of young British women, calling them “chavs” or “chav girls”. I’m sure this term existed outside of tiktok but that’s how I became loosely aware of it.
It looks and reads pretty much the same as this. I made the British association with her photos because of the similarities to the “chav” style I recall. The added captions use *almost* identical verbiage too.
A lot of notable parallels to the “hot cheeto girl” which is its own racist/classist can of worms.
A lot of interesting takes around how tans once meant expensive summer vacations now are considered “trashy”
I’m only a very distant observer, no expert but it’s fascinating from afar.

@@Billy55563 the reason why it was “crazy” is because my classmates were the same age as her at the time. my 13 year old self was shook that someone my age was pregnant. the bio father was also 18 at the time. it’s a long story but basically he’s in jail and he is the father of her first kid.
