  • I review, breakdown and explain the Shogun Episode 8 Trailer. I react to the ending scene of the preview which is focussed on Toranaga meeting with Mariko and the plan to get her involved in Crimson Sky. I discuss what it means for the character, Mariko’s death and I compare it to the real history, the 1980’s series and also the novel. I also give my theories and predictions on the Battle of Sekigahara, Ishido and Lady Ochiba, the plan to go to Osaka castle and episode 8.

Toronaga is playing Mariko as a chess piece to force his enemies into checkmate and giving her a n honorable “Beautiful Death.”

He's doing a good job of keeping his fake-surrender plans to himself.......where he can also see where the loyalties of all of his subordinates lie......she passed, as did anyone who was disappointed by his supposed surrender. The only clue he gave was forbidding his son from taking the orders to end his own life (where he sadly did it all by himself when not understanding the bigger plan while ironically led by loyalty).

I dont think Toranaga is anywhere near as noble as we've been led to believe so far. I don't think he would hesitate to murder women and children or sacrifice his own people if it meant victory

Toranaga isn't noble; he's the master of the game of thrones, several steps ahead of his opponents and willing to sacrifice anything, which is not noble but very formidable.

Oda Nobunaga can be seen as a worst Kanpaku because how cruel he is when he dealing with rebels monk of Ikko Ikki sect, He got a nickname "Demon King of the Sixth Heaven" for a reason.
Hideyoshi can considered worst Kanpaku because he did initiated a useless war that wasted so many resource, funds, manpowers in the process and lost the war on korea on top of it.
Also the story that you usually heard are write right after Tokugawa Shogunate already established their authorities and can just write a propaganda hitpieces to make previous Kanpaku look bad comparing to the current shogunate.

I agree with your analysis. Toranoga has much up his sleeve and the trailer seems to imply that Mariko will play a key role with his win. Yes, Mariko will die but she will die a hero's death that will help Toranago's strategy. Cannot wait for the last episodes!

Toranaga a cold man, exploiting Marikos past ro manipulate her sacrifice like its for her family retribution and honor, except its really a power move that benefits toranaga instead

Correct! His anger last episode was that the timing of her request wasn't right and he was frustrated by that and others not flying straight as he needed. I think he may also though see the other side which is her faith and help her fulfilling her revenge benefits both sides

What good & evil? These are powerful ppl fighting over adamant ambition & gargantuan ego’s..sucking in everyone around them into a life of war & death! If anything Lady Ochiba (Yodo Dono) has every right to yield Toranaga’s (Ieyasu) rise to power. He broke an oath (and later a signed treaty in real history).
What makes Mariko sacrificing herself a “good act”. Who are the good you’re referring to? It sure as hell isn’t Blackthorne and his rag tag crew. He’s a *liar* and a *pirate* least we not forget.
There’s an established succession that is being selfishly dismantled. I don’t see how Mariko sacrificing herself for greedy Europeans is an act of “good”😵‍💫

After the death of Alexander the Great, it resembles a fierce battle between those who seek to protect the legitimate successor of the Great and those who were once the Great's subordinates and seek to seize the Great's power and replace it. In this story, the latter is the Toranaga.

Errrr.... I wanna say what happens but at the same time I don't want to spoil it for the people who did not read the book or see the 1980 series. Unless the 2024 series has made changes.... the next few episodes will not offer any surprises for me. I will say though regarding the screen adaptations, felt more connected to the 1980's version, the actors provided more charisma and I cared about them more.
