  • We need to talk about Shogun Episode 9. I don’t think I’ve felt this amount of tension since I’ve watched Succession’s final episode and I already knew what was going to happen to Mariko. This should tell you a lot about the greatness of this TV show. They’re doing an amazing job. Praises aside, let’s do a breakdown of the penultimate episode of Shogun, where Mariko experienced the death of her dreams and died as a martyr.

This was a very emotional episode. Mariko genuinely loved Blackthorne but, her duty to her lord came before love. I was elated when her supposed demise was postponed due to Ishido permitting her permit to leave. Her own sacrifice to save others came as a very big shock. It was not a plan that Toronaga foresaw but, it gives his plans ultimate leverage in achieving his goals. I hope that Anna Sawa receives an award for her role as Mariko. An absolute entrhalling adaptation and depiction of feudal Japan. 10 + stars.

Well she wanted to die and got it but it wasn't necessary. Whatever Toranaga is planning to do he can achieve it without the death of Mariko or his loyal general. He is simply going to attack the castle anyways and presumably his brother is in on it and will turn around and help him. Really he just needs to kill Ishido not engage everyone in war.

It shows that John Blackthorne has embraced and is immersed in Japanese culture. That's his character arc that he is no longer the Englishman and has become Japanese. It's similar to the movie Last Samurai where he shuns going home and stays in Japan. Would have like to see John and Mariko have a happy ending but that's not how the book goes.

@@jonfreeman9682 Looks to me like he did it out of respect to her. Accepting he could not talk her out of it, he accepted what was going to happen and considered the best thing he could do for her, even if he doesn't understand or agree with it.
The scene earlier he was still trying to talk her out of it, saying life has more value than death. He didn't agree with her decision. But when it was time, he respected her decision and would rather do it himself and second her than have her suffer. He set aside his own view on the matter to support her in her final moments.
Nothing indicates he agreed with her decision, but he did respect it.

Hes the only guy not bound by blind loyalty, despite trying to be loyal, he values his life above all, and thats what makes him so relatable. 99% of us would question our loyalty if we were sure it would lead to our death, and thats why he is at the end of the day faultless. Torunaga never lets him in on his plans, despite his insistence, so he is only ever given more reasons to betray him to save his head. Remember, Mariko’s death would have spelled trouble for Ishido so he did not want to be the cause of her death. Mariko knew this and took control of the situation by sacrificing herself.

Their official podcast covers this. At the time only samurai committed seppuku. Any woman doing this wouldn’t technically be performing seppuku instead their attempt at killing themselves would be symbolic and the second would actually be the way they’d day. Also historically it was more common for them to hold the knife up and fall into it rather than how seppuku was done which is to stab then cut through.

Mitsunari Ishida (Ishido in SHOGUN), who was an enemy of Ieyasu(Toranaga in SHOGUN), tried to take Garasha Hosokawa (Mariko Toda in SHOGUN) hostage at Tamatsukuri's Hosokawa mansion in Osaka, but Garasha refused. The next day, Mitsunari went out to use his force and had his soldiers surround the mansion. When the vassals told Garasha everything, Garasha prayed a little, then gathered all the maids and ladies in the mansion and said, ``As my husband has commanded, I alone want to die,'' and led them outside. . Later, as suicide is prohibited in Christianity, the chief retainer, Hidekiyo Ogasawara (Shosai), intervened with Garasha and committed suicide by setting explosives in the mansion and setting it on fire so that no body would be left behind. Her death haiku was, ``Only when you know when it is time to scatter can flowers in this world become flowers and people become people.''
A few hours after her death, Father Niecchi Sordi Organtino visited the burnt remains of the Hosokawa mansion, picked up Garasha's bones, and buried them in the Christian cemetery in Sakai.

Yabushige is kind of doing what Toronaga did before he was as powerful as he is in the show. Toronaga basically purposefully arrived to late to aid his ally/liege and then came to an agreement with the Taiko.
Said agreement allowed him to not commit as fully as others to the Korean invasion (which was ultimately a debacle) thus cementing his position as the strongest of the regents once the Taiko died.
This is not a tale about a virtuous rightful leader. This is a story about the one who was a bit better at playing the game (and who was smiled upon by fate at the right occasions).
This whole notion that Lady Ochiba should have picked his side is laughable. She is bang on the money what the fate of her son will be, when Toronaga wins.

Mariko’s sacrifice was as multi-faceted as her character was. She knew that the Shinobi attack was aimed at her so when she, Blackthorne, and others (including Torunaga’s newborn) were trapped in the storage house and the door was being rigged to blow, she sacrificed herself to save Blackthorne (the man she love and the man who saw her as a person rather than as a possession), Torunaga’s child (the child of her lord, thus fulfilling her duties to Torunaga to the very end), the others (saving others from dying for her), and herself (by sacrificing herself to save others, out of duty, love, or compassion, she restores honor to her name which ironically led later Christians to consider her a saint). Anna Sawaii definitely deserves an award for her deep, beautiful acting. They would have to be nuts, blind, deaf, or dumb AF to not recognize her performance of understated elegance.

It was her power move to bring disgrace to the Houses that labeled her father a traitor and smeared her family name. Mariko was exercising perhaps her own avenue of power, and by accepting death, she was not surrendering but visiting dishonor upon all the Houses who permitted such a vile act of cowardice to occur while she was a "guest" in Osaka!

You knew Yobu was like a used car salesman who would do whatever he could to save his skin. He always seems to do what is best for himself. Eventually that kind of thinking catches up to everyone. You notice that even in his betrayal he couldn't fully commit to even that. What was great about Mariko's polearm scene is it showed her getting tired being wore down by the number of enemies she wasn't some girl boss taking down 12 men by herself although she fought valiantly. One of my favorite movies is the "Duelist" where it shows the energy and exhaustion from long confrontations not Hollywood superhero BS. Notice how John was willing to be her 2nd and end her rather than see her suffer if that isn't loyalty I don't know what is. I think Ishido has already alienated the others on his counsel by wiping out one family already who tried to leave. The others will have seen that and wondered if that would be their fate as well. I think John will get the hostages out somehow in the next episode back to Toranaga. I think John will eventually be in a relationship with Usami and build Toranagna a fleet of ships and finally come to realize that his future lies in Japan.

That was Toranaga’s men who ambushed them. Not Ishido’s. I think he wants to put all the blame to Ishido.

THIS EPISODE IS STUPID!!! IT MAKES NO SENSE AND THE WRITERS DID NOT RESEARCH!! FLAWS:
    1) Mariko was tasked to A) rescue Toranaga's Wife, Consort and New Son, and escort them from the castle. B) if refused to leave, that proves all the "royals" are prisoners. Her "Suicide" was to Embarrass Ishido and the Court.
    2) Since Ishido relented to release Mariko and the others, HER DUTY WAS TO GET THEM TO Toranaga, letting herself be killed was BREAKING THE PLEDGE to Toranaga!! MAKE NO SENSE, ESPECIALLY since she just found Love with Blackthorne!!
    3) THERE IS NO HISTORY OF WOMEN OF ROYALITY COMMITING SEPPUKU! Mariko was a "Lady", ie Royalty, and NOT A SAMURAI! QUOTE: The custom known as "seppuku," which specifically refers to ritual suicide by disembowelment, was reserved for men of the samurai class in feudal Japan. Samurai women had different methods, which traditionally involved either slashing their own throat or stabbing themselves in the heart.Apr 16, 2024" AGAIN, MARIKO WAS NOT A SAMURAI, She Was Royality, "Lady"!!! The Character that Markio is BASED ON, NEVER HAD CONTACT WITH BLACKTHORNE, DID NOT COMMIT SUICIDE OF ANY KIND, was actually killed by her servant as she about to be captured.!! PS, the ACTUAL "Translator" that Toranaga assigned in the REAL story was a JAPANESE MAN, NOT A WOMAN!! The Writing in the Hulu Fantasy Shogun is Bullshit and Full or Flaws and Historical Inaccuracies! Blackthorne's REAL Character "Adams" Actually MARRIED his Japanese Consort assigned by Toranaga and they had two children.

Good episode but not great. The episode is called Crimson Sky so we should get Crimson Sky with John Blackthorne sailing the Erasmus blasting his cannons and storming the castle walls with a thousand samurai clashing swords and arrows flying and fire brimstone and smoke. We expect an epic battle and all we got is 3 stroke samurai killed without honor by an arrow and Mariko swinging a spear and falling on the ground. This is false advertising.

What you want and describe is for low IQ people. This version of Crimson Sky shows how to win with cunning mind, not with slashing swords mindlessly.

Dreadful adaptation of the book. Had so much potential and I was really looking forward to the remake but have been really disappointed 😢
I am watching the original miniseries which although dated outlines the story so much better and frames the Mariko/Blackthorn storyline far better than this so called remake !
