  • I review, breakdown and explain the Shogun Episode 9 Trailer. I react to the ending scene of the preview which is focussed on Mariko looking to leave Osaka with the hostages that Lord Ishido had. I discuss if it will lead to Mariko’s death and what it means for the character. I compare it to the real history, the 1980’s series and the novel. I also give my theories and predictions on John Blackthorne’s reaction, Yabushige’s betrayal and episode 9.

    Mariko and all the hostages will all be killed. Result: all the other Daimyo's become angry for the death of their families, and then allied with Torenaga in act of revenge. That's the sacrifice of Mariko to support Torenaga. imho.

    I think that Mariko and Blackthorne are the doomed lovers he talked about at the hot springs in episode 4. When they imagined seeing a tragedy in London. They are the ultimate star crossed lovers. Perfect for one another, but never allowed to be together. It will be heartbreaking if Mariko does die. Blackthorne will be devastated.

    Spoilers - according to the book Mariko state that the daimiyos’ families and her are not hostages and should be free to leave. She led a group out but is stopped by ishido’s men. Her escorting samurais fought ishido’s men and were killed in turn. In the end, Mariko took a weapon and try to fight ishido’s men. These men do not dare to kill her but as the same time she cannot force her way through. In the end, she put down her weapon and declared that she had failed and will commit seppuku. In the end, ishido backed down and Mariko do not need to commit seppuku and the hostages are freed. However at night a group of assassins attacked Mariko and John. M and J barricaded themselves but the assassins blew up the door. Mariko stood against the door and protested at the insult as the door blew up. John lost consciousness but and realized that Mariko had died when he woke up. I remembered how sad I was when I read to that point. It must be more than 20 years ago when I read the book and I still remember that part. This series really brought up many scenes to life. 😊

    I think Mariko plays the same role as her historical counterpart. Hosokawa Gracia died when Ishida tried to take her hostage. Her death was so tragic that Ishida had to give up on taking other daimyo's wives hostage. I guess that Mariko will have an equally tragic death. Her death will affect some daimyo, and they will begin to distance themselves from Ishido.

    I really don't want to see Mariko go but her sacrifice is essential to Toranaga's Plan. Toranaga had to send her to get the hostages he already knew the death of Mariko's Father was really eating away at her Soul. Hence gave her a final order and last service to get the Hostages. It will be heart breaking for sure just like the death of Hiromatsu.

    Though I enjoy "Shogun," sometimes I feel the show drags on with less action. There's too much talking and not enough excitement building up. I might get criticized for this, but it's just how I feel. It's really sad to see so many innocent people dying for seemingly no reason, and even when there is a reason, their deaths feel pointless. This has been happening repeatedly for the past 8 episodes.

    The Blackthorne character is a brute and a gorilla in this "version", such a HUGE letdown from Richard Chamberlain's sophisticated performance. And not exactly flattering to the real person it is based on.
    Mariko is a suicidal iceberg who somehow speaks amazingly good English, compared to an irresistibly warm & compassionate performance by Yoko Shimada.
    How these two could ever fall in love is beyond belief. I don't see the tiniest spark of chemistry between them.
    So the love story in this version is DEAD.
    The story as Japanese political drama is terrific. But I'd be just as happy to see Hiroyuki Sanada and the fantastic cast in a Japanese movie about this period in their history.
    As a "version" of James Clavell's exciting novel, this is a dud.

    • @benragnarsson7228
      @benragnarsson7228 Před měsícem +2

      Clavells novel is nothing more than a adaptation of historical events, he just changed the names of historical figures. Blackthorne historical character was not sophisticated, he was a sailor and a privateer. Mariko is based on Lady Garcia that spoke very good portoguese. Mariko is suicidal yes, her entire clan died, her family name is in disgrace and she was forced to marry someone she didnt want and was treated badly. This series is loosely inspired by the novel, but from a japanese point of view. Toranaga is the main character, not Blackthorne.
