It might look funny, but it can be really painful. The jaw muscle starts spasming after being in that position for too long.
On a girl’s trip to the beach, my bestie was brushing her teeth, when this happened. We found the closest ER & they gave her a couple rounds of muscle relaxers & it still took the doc a lot of strength to get it popped back into joint.
I have TMJ & sometimes wake up with my jaw out of joint like this, but can get it popped back into place myself. I’ve been very fortunate!

When that happened to me, I was alone, and could not call anyone on the phone, so i grabbed an encyclopedia of medicine and found the problem and a recommended solution: You just need to grab the jaw and pull the back down while pulling it to the front a bit. The jaw snapped in place without pain or muscle relaxant. However, there are three different conditions know, but the two others are painful. The whole thing btw. was caused by a dentist that made me open my mouth so wide that I could not close it. He quickly put it back in order with the grip I described, but from then on I had to be careful not to open my mouth too wide, but when yawning I did not pay attention and it happened again. It happened a dozen time in the next decade, but I always quickly put it back myself. Has not happened for many years now.

Same!! It happened to me first while eating a salad and I was so freaked out- my jaw felt unhinged! I couldn’t close it. I was thinking I needed to go to the ER but googled it first and saw that a doctor would just pop it back and so I looked up how to do that and imagined I was holding my face like a doctor would and just closed my eyes and breathed into the moment and let my doctor hands do the feeling. It was terrifying. But it popped back into place! Snapped forward. It has happened like at least 10 more times in the following few years since and I always have to hope I can pop it back. It’s never not terrifying. I’m so glad I’ve been able to do it myself! 😳 knock on wood

As dentist in training, this is something that can be seen in patients with TMJ issues. Basically your condyle extends past your articular eminence (point of no return) from opening your mouth too wide. The fix is for the dentist or physician in this case to press down on the lower molars with their thumbs and manually redirect the condyle into the fossa 🙂

This happened to my sister. If you get stressed easily but don't fidget, there might be a chance you're locking your jaw in your sleep, as in tightening your jaw muscles.
I would hear my sister in her sleep, grinding and almost trying to bite something on her sleep, and i always thought it was because she was dreaming with food. Turns out she was relieving stress.
She now has to use a retainer every night to help maintain the muscles a little more relaxed.

😢 When I was 14 my jaw when I woke up was like sideways, I too couldn't close my mouth, but eventually I heard a loud popping in my ears and my jaw seemed to be able too close. Next day I was taken to a Maxillofacial Surgeon, after x-rays he told my Mother, eventually I will be needing surgery.. I asked how and when will I know if I will need that surgery, his answer was " oh you will know when you will need surgery and 2010 while eating my breakfast all of a sudden my jaw went one way and my face seemed too be looking straight ahead.. well being it was 3:20 am, of course nothing was open and I knew there's no way of going to work, I couldn't talk right, the pain & pressure was getting to be extremely painful. I called work, actually I had my husband talk to my work, telling them I would not be coming to work, he explained my uncomfortable situation, next I called my Dentist, I tried telling him my jaw seemed out of alignment and could he help me, he said I would need to go too a Maxillofacial Surgeon, he recommended a Doctor and I made an emergency appointment, thankfully his testing and exam wasn't terribly painful, but that was most likely because of the injection they gave me before the exam. So next they booked me for a TMJ surgery on the right jaw. Once the surgery was completed next came Physical Therapy sessions, eventually my jaw seemed somewhat better, but for a couple of years and having to live and work with wearing these hard like plastic mouth pieces, kinda like what the guys wear while playing sports, too protect the teeth from injuries while playing the sport..definitely what hockey players need. It was very hard to talk with customers, very uncomfortable and didn't help my appearance, like a hockey player who's wearing mouth guards, not a pretty sight, not too mention how awful I must look, and talking clear enough so people could understand me, which was almost impossible to do. So I totally understand this young girls dilemma.

I've had this before, but my mouth was closed shut. Equally terrifying but less awkward. In this case of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD or TMJ), the cartilage (called the articular disc) between the the skull and the condyle of the jaw bone slipped out of place, causing the mouth to get stuck open or (more often) closed. In many cases, the person can click their articular disc back into place by forcing their mouth open or closed, but if they can't, they have to go to the ER or wait until they can force it back into place without damaging any tissue. The ligaments attached to the cartilage have pain receptors, so it sucks having that sensitive tissue stuck between two bones. 😕

I once yawned so large that I actually ended up popping my jaw out of place. To the point where whenever I would open and close my jaw you could hear a loud popping sound. My mother obviously knew but because I wasn’t in any obvious danger we simply did nothing about it even after telling her that it did hurt and was uncomfortable despite not being enough to make me cry. Now when I was going through puberty my face completely grew in a slightly distorted manner, where my jaw is farther out on one side.
Moral of the story: Just because you aren’t crying doesn’t mean it’s not an issue that needs to be dealt with with
    (Edit)
Crazy so many people also experienced this. I thought I was alone. For those wondering why I didn’t do anything, 1. It didn’t hurt that bad, it was just uncomfortable 2. It hurt to attempt to put it back 3. I was told it was okay because I wasn’t crying. At the end of the day, I’m in my 20s now and this happened in my early teens. I’m well past any attempt to fix it because the damage has already been done. I just live with it now.

Me too! Half of my family members and even some of my friends have problems with popping noises and pain in their jaw, so I thought nothing of it. Then I dislocated my jaw twice in one night by yawning. The ER strapped my jaw shut and referred me to a jaw specialist. Turns out one side of my jaw was growing larger than the other side and my muscles aren't made for that. The popping and pain was from my jaw bone sliding around in the joint. Now I just need to be careful not to open my mouth too widely.
There is a surgery where they put wires in your joints to help your muscles hold the jaw bone in place so it doesn't dislocate.

I’ve had this happen on 2 separate occasions. I can tell you that it’s funny afterwards but hurts like hell in the moment. By the time you figure out it’s truly stuck, sit in the ER, get an iv started with morphine, wait for x-rays & finally dr coming in can easily be 2+ hours. That was my experience at least. The dr literally took his thumbs & pushed down very hard on my back teeth & it popped right back. I obviously felt nothing in the moment (thanks morphine 😉) but afterwards felt bruised for a day or two.

Ambulance took me to hospital. XRay didn’t show any breaks. MRI scan showed a kink and twists in nerves (like a kink in a hose) and it sealed my head shut to my shoulder. They gave me injections into the area to try and release it. Staff had NEVER seen something like this before. Had that happening to me about 12 years ago during a deployment with the navy. We were on shore leave and got drunk, and somehow I managed to lock my jaw while yelling at a colleague. Jaw locked completely, and it was sooo so painful, that I could feel it through my booze marinated body.
Managed to bite our ships doctor when she managed to wiggle it back in place. As I bit, she screamed and i opened my mouth again, aaaaand locked my jaw once more.
She fixed me up once again and sent me to bed. I was then talking with another colleague and wanted to see if it was all good. Opened my mouth and for the THIRD time within half an hour I managed to dislocate my jaw.
Havent felt the need to yawn extra wide ever since...!

Holy shit. My jaw has always been double jointed. I can literally touch the tip of my chin on my Adams apple. Always yawned wide asf and only thing I noticed is my ear canal getting irritated for it. I'm done yawning so wide or I'm lucky for having a double jointed jaw? Idk but damn knowing I have to yawn less wide suddenly after doing it my whole life gives me anxiety. Just the way I process body change it's kinda miserable

@@poplaurentiu4148she probably yawned, screamed or was in shock. When I yawn I try not to open my mouth too wide because I’m scared of things like this .

To relocate your jaw out your thumbs in your mouth and press down on your back teeth and push your jaw back and chin up Into place. Would recommend doing it yourself but if you had no other choice that’s how you donit
