Helicopter Fuel Run / Camera Test (HD)

  • When I brought Wyrking Byrd to its summer home last week, I was too darn tired to make a fuel run before landing. With rain in the forecast and cherry season just a day away, I figured I'd better top it off, check out my camera setup -- including a new camera mount -- and trying a new iPad mount. This is the footage I captured during this flight. It may come as no surprised to some of you that the audio camera didn't capture intercom/cockpit audio so I wound up recording a narration track in the editing process. I hope you enjoy this!

    About Me and the Helicopter
    - I have been flying for about 22 years. My nearly 4,000 hours of flight time is in Robinson R44, Robinson R22, and Bell 206L (Long Ranger) helicopters.
    - The helicopter in this video is a Robinson R44 Raven II that I've nicknamed Wyrking Byrd.
    --
    About the Video
    - The video was recorded with two GoPro Hero 8 cameras. I used ambient audio from just one Hero 8 for the helicopter sound, dialed down by 10 decibels from normal volume so it wouldn't be annoying. I also had a Hero 7 connected to the helicopter's intercom system with an NFlightCam audio cable (amzn.to/31syLTm) to record audio from the radio and intercom system. (That's the camera that didn't work.)
    - The "cockpit cam" front-facing camera was mounted with my current Instrument Cam set up, which you can learn about in this Behind-the-Scenes video: • Behind the Scenes: Coc... . It's based upon a MyPilotPro Helicopter Mount (mypilotpro.com/product/helico...) modified to get the height I need. The "skid cam" was mounted on the pilot side skid using MyPilotPro GoPro Airplane Mount (mypilotpro.com/product/mypilo.... (I might make a special video about this setup later in the season for Channel Members and Patrons; look for it!)
    - The video was edited on a iMac using Davinci Resolve 17 software. Learn more about it here: www.blackmagicdesign.com/prod...
    - The intro music is by Bob Levitus, famed "Dr. Mac." You can find him here: www.boblevitus.com/

    Great video. It seems to me that you're a great multi-tasker. Conducting an employee orientation flight, narrating a video, flying a helicopter and navigating, all at the same time. Well done!

    • @FlyingMAir
      @FlyingMAir  Před 2 lety +2

      Well, to be honest, I only narrated the video at the beginning and end. Once I took off, I was pretty focused on the orientation stuff. Sometimes I simply forget the cameras are running -- and in difficult flying situations, that's a good thing. The video/cameras should never be more on my mind than the actual flying.

I am a student pilot learning going for my commercial license over in Olympia WA right now, and your videos have given me a lot of cool insights into what kinds of things should be on my mind while flying as well as good look into at least one job opportunity that could be available to me once I get my license. Love your vids Maria. So many questions...
    What new bird are you looking for and what criteria help you choose? (Might make an interesting vid?).
    Can you aim the camera over your shoulder, to point down a bit more so we can watch your pedal action...

    • @FlyingMAir
      @FlyingMAir  Před 2 lety +2

      I'm an R44 pilot so that's what I'd replace Mr Bleu with. Same criteria.
      There are limits to how I can mount the cameras but I'll keep it in mind. On a regular flight, there's very little pedal work. But when I dry cherries, I'm dancing on the pedals and it might be interesting to see, especially when synced up with the view out the front.

    Maria. So glad to see a video from you. I’ve missed flying with you. Sorry to hear about “ Mr Blue” being gone. Hope it. Was a good deal for you. Does this bird have a/c ? It will be interesting to view the drying process from the skids. I have vivid memories of landscapes going bye rather quickly, while standing on the skids of a UH-1. Truly, a different perspective. Look forward to it.
    Be safe girl.

    • @FlyingMAir
      @FlyingMAir  Před 2 lety +1

      I sold Mr Bleu because I literally got an offer I couldn't refuse. It's in overhaul now and someone else is paying for it. The one I'm flying now does not have AC. When I dry cherries, I take the door at my seat off.

    • @FlyingMAir
      @FlyingMAir  Před 2 lety +1

      It's about a 30- to 40-minute drive, depending on traffic. 15-20 minutes to the bridge and then 15 to 20 minutes to the airport from there. That's why I don't park it at the airport during cherry season; too far to drive.

    If you do use the rear-facing GoPro mount on the instrument panel, you might be able to crop the feed in editing to highlight you when you have no left seat passenger. If you're targeting a 1080 finished product, then shoot in 2.7 or 4k for best quality and in order to take advantage of image stabilization. Always enjoy watching your flights.
