  • This is a video of a typical orientation flight that I do with cherry drying pilots who come to work with me every summer. The main purpose of the flight is to show the pilot (Rick, in this case) where the orchards are and the kind of obstacles to look out for. He's got my iPad with the outlines of the orchards in ForeFlight, as well as a book of maps. As I'm flying in this video, I'm pretty much focused on my task at hand, so there isn't narration -- just our cockpit chatter, which is mostly all business.

    About Me and the Helicopter
    - I have been flying for about 22 years. My nearly 4,000 hours of flight time is in Robinson R44, Robinson R22, and Bell 206L (Long Ranger) helicopters.
    - The helicopter in this video is a Robinson R44 Raven II that I've nicknamed Wyrking Byrd.

    About the Video
    - The video was recorded with two GoPro Hero 8 cameras and a GoPro Hero 7 camera. I used ambient audio from just one Hero 8 for the helicopter sound, dialed down by 10 decibels from normal volume so it wouldn't be annoying. I also had a Hero 7 connected to the helicopter's intercom system with an NFlightCam audio cable (amzn.to/31syLTm) to record audio from the radio and intercom system. (So yeah -- I had four cameras going.)
    - The "cockpit cam" front-facing camera was mounted with my current Instrument Cam set up, which you can learn about in this Behind-the-Scenes video: • Behind the Scenes: Coc... . It's based upon a MyPilotPro Helicopter Mount (mypilotpro.com/product/helico...) modified to get the height I need. The "skid cam" was mounted on the pilot side skid using MyPilotPro GoPro Airplane Mount (mypilotpro.com/product/mypilo.... (I might make a special video about this setup later in the season for Channel Members and Patrons; look for it!)
    - The video was edited on a iMac using Davinci Resolve 17 software. Learn more about it here: www.blackmagicdesign.com/prod...
    - The intro music is by Bob Levitus, famed "Dr. Mac." You can find him here: www.boblevitus.com/

    Once again, I was thoroughly absorbed by the minute details you were reviewing with the new pilot. Helicopter flying is such a fascinating hybrid of new tech, old tech, and almost no tech, but all applied to extract every ounce of utility from a machine. Thanks for posting!

    Drying cherries takes a huge amount of work doesn’t it , you pilots sure have to have your wits about you with all the lines etc that can ruin your day . Thank you for a real educational video , enjoyed that I did 👍🏻🚁

    Thank you for sharing. The sound is more on the left than on the right with headphones.
    If you can only capture the sound like that, when editing you can put the track of the sound in "mono" in your software (if the option exist), this workaround should resolve the problem.

    The seat belts might be loose so when long lining you can see outside the helicopter and for the gunner when doing game capture as you need to be outside the helicopter to shoot the net gun.

    • @FlyingMAir
      @FlyingMAir  Před 2 lety +2

      You're probably right. In the pilot seat, it seems like the inside shoulder strap is looser than the outside one -- perhaps so he can lean over and look out his door. Thanks for sharing that insight!

    Did you get a new Helicopter?

  • @sanfranciscobay
    @sanfranciscobay Před 2 lety +1

    Is there an ideal Helicopter for Cherry Drying or does it vary with the size of the Orchard, distance between Orchards...? I remember a video you posted that had a Huey Helicopter for Cherry Drying

    • @FlyingMAir
      @FlyingMAir  Před 2 lety

      It's mostly orchardist/orchard manager preference. Some helicopters are unsuitable -- Robinson R22s, for example, are too small to be worthwhile.

    • @sanfranciscobay
      @sanfranciscobay Před 2 lety

      @@FlyingMAir Would the Huey you flew in or a Turbine Robinson or Turbine Bell Ranger be too expensive to operate drying Cherries since a R44 can do it cheaper?

    23:50 Growth is gonna happen. Can't say "Don't build it and they won't come;" they're coming anyway. And the way of the world seems to be when growers have decided to hang it up before the government taxes it all away, they'll just sell out to a developer and keep more of their hard-earned wealth. It's a shame for the community but you can understand where the property owners are coming from. Fact is, I'm seriously considering moving to Wenatchee or someplace along the east slopes of the Cascades, because I'm now too close to Portland and want nothing to do with their politics or the culture there. Unfortunate because I've lived in Vancouver for the last 34 years and always loved the community. Now it's getting to be Portland Lite, and now that I'm retired and my wife is gone I want a little bit slower pace and a quieter environment.

    • @FlyingMAir
      @FlyingMAir  Před 2 lety

      I get it, but it still makes me sad.
      There are places out beyond Wenatchee that are not only quieter and less developed, but cheaper to buy in. Entiat, if you like the river; Waterville, if you like flat farmland; Quincy if you like both. And that's just around here.
