    Tatyana Heard was one of the unsung heroes of England this year. So were a lot of others, but the cohesion and slickness between 10, 12 and 13 led to a lot of scores. How often have we seen other teams lose momentum because of balls fired at the feet, over the head, or dropped. The English midfield (which at times included the wings and full back, not to mention some of the forwards) was superb. I was also interested to see who made most offloads over the championship ... not who I might have expected.

      I agree, great accuracy through the tournament from England.

    I thought Mo's kicking was iffy.

    Really enjoyed the Eng vs France game and the whole tournament. Meg Jones has joined Abby Dow in my automatic selections for the starting team. The only reason there's not more names in my auto selection list is the strength in depth, not due to any weaknesses e.g. the front row: pick any from Sarah B, Maud M, Hannah B, Amy C, Lark A-D, Mackenzie C and so on.

      Very much agree with Jones and Dow- I'd also have Kildunne in there. Other positions have a scary amount of possibilities all world class!

      @@KatMerchant Yes, Ellie K could easily make it. I just have slight reservations on her defensive abilities (e.g. tackling). But she's improving - add in some Emma Sing genes, or maybe some JPR Williams (showing my age) and you'd have perfection!

    Great content from you over the W6N, Kat 💪
    An excellent tournament. Ireland stepped up in the end! Great to see Wales get a win for their efforts even though they have a long way to go. Though England remain a cut above, I thought the quality of play and coaching across the teams has stepped up. Some excellent set plays (including inside running lines, switch plays, kick passes) and for several teams, better defensive structure. Enjoyable to watch!
    👏👏

      Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. It's been fun to do. We've seen more than enough to be really excited about the future of the game.

    All teams improving, but England in front (longer as professionals and bigger player pool). French academy system is going to reap rewards soon. Scot, Ireland & Wales need strong club rugby through investment - a European tournament would be fab. Good to see Sarah Hunter involved at international coaching, more women need to have top jobs, really hope this first cohort of international pros go into coaching to redress balance. I watch as much women's rugby/cricket as men's now and it is just as exciting.

      Yeah the under 20's set up in France is really good!
      Read that as international props rather than pro's at first :) I think we'll see a lot more players turn coaches

    Was there in person for Ireland v Scotland and cried at full time - the turnaround from last year was really really special to see. first half was sloppy esp the line out & handling but they showed how much they've grown in that second half.

      Such a big result. Very interested to see how they kick on from here.

    It must have been good old English pragmatism that led to them
    putting their much talked about handbrake back on for the game against France and their much vaunted back three were largely starved of the ball. Matthews was immense throughout the match as she always is, making a nonsense of her starting the opening game against Italy on the bench. One of my personal highlights of the match was seeing Lucy Packer fresh from the bench coming on and almost immediately preventing a touchdown for a French try. Losing Bern and MacDonald before the championship and Rowland after the first game all seemed like big blows for England at the time, but Muir, Breach and especially Meg Jones all had excellent campaigns in their absence so in the end they weren't really missed. As for Wales, I was really chuffed that they got that last gasp win against Italy, especially given what happened against Scotland earlier in the tournament.

      Wales ruined another one of my predictions but what a great game!

    • @suckers0
      @suckers0 Před 17 dny

      Agreed. I loved the Lucy P try save and, tbh, prefer her as scrum-half to Mo H (whose kicking - box and open play) is below par. The depth of England's squad (including those injured) is huge - quality in depth. Hopefully, the other 5 nations will close the gap (as France almost has).

    Not sure being in WXV1 does them any favours.

      It's going to be a serious challenge for them - they are making progress though so let's see what they bring.

    15 v 14 in the second half robbed the crowd of a better game and robbed England of a better contest. It's time for an orange card system to replace red cards where no ill intent is involved. The England back 3 situation was interesting. On a couple of occasions Kildunne didn't back herself to go round her opponent, as she might have done against Wales or Ireland. Dow did try to get round her woman once or twice but wasn't successful. Breach's tackling was badly exposed by Ménager's try. I wonder if, by the next world cup, we might not see Emma Sing at full back and Dow and Kildunne on the wings. The French have a team of talented individuals, but even their best players make too many mistakes. If they can remedy that, they can be a major threat at the next world cup - as they were at the last. For the world cup, England need to keep Matthews and Aldcroft fit, and Galligan and Talling need to join them at the same level. There were moments when the pace of the game seemed a bit beyond Marlie Packer. Mitchell must know he needs to create a team that doesn't need her so much and it will be interesting to see how he goes about that.

    • @JohnLagrue
      @JohnLagrue Před 16 dny

      I'm less and less sure that Packer will still be skipper come the world cup. She's not getting any younger and no matter how inspirational she is, younger and faster talent will force their way in. It is interesting to see that the coaches seem to have selected Kabeya as a future captain.

    • @KatMerchant
      @KatMerchant  Před 15 dny +1

      I think that England weren't helped by the fact they hadn't had to defend much up until the France game which mayve explains Breach going too high and soft on Menager. Packer might not have the raw pace of some of the youngsters but the graft she puts in is huge and she nearly always goes for the jackal- I wouldn't be ruling her out just yet. but agree creating a team that doesn't rely on any one player is so important

    Ireland to beat Scotland. Wales heading for WXV3. Hear me now, believe me later.
