I actually REALLY LOVE that they kept the same actress Isabelle Furhman for Orphan: First Kill. Her looking a bit older makes it seem like she hasn’t mastered her scheme yet. She hasn’t learned to wear the prosthetic teeth and do her makeup properly to look like the child she looks like in the first movie. It actually works that she looks older. They say in the first movie that she has done this scheme several times assuming perfecting it and learning each time.

I also think she may have been fed more/better with American families- thus keeping on enough weight to look like she has natural pre-puberty ‘baby-fat’. That’s the main difference that throws me off in what I see of first kill- she doesn’t have the same look as a child whose body is ACTUALLY retaining weight in anticipation of a growth spurt.

In the original script, there's actually a reason Esther tries to seduce John.
When Esther/Leena was a child, her mother died of AIDS, and her father sexually abused her, which resulted in her becoming infertile. Once her father took another lover, he told her that it was because of her condition and that she could never be a real woman.
End result: Leena murdered her father and his paramour, and she was sent to the Saarne Institute. Because of this screwed-up childhood, whenever she was adopted, she'd always try to find love where she thought she had it as a child - with the father.

What I love about this movie so much is we as the audience of course know Esther is the villain so it’s easy to pass judgement on John but if you look at it from his point of view, your alcoholic wife who injured your daughter and just suffered a miscarriage is accusing a 12 year old of being a murderer, but because he cheated and we see Esther commit crimes on screen everyone is quick to blame him. But all these characters are so complex and well-written that it’s so easy to see both points of view. It’s also a really great example of gaslighting, you can see Kate question her own sanity when she realizes Esther’s arm is actually broken.

except the fact that they only adopted Esther because of the wife. they pinned the hole thing on the "mommy not wanting me", but the wife asked for her to be there, aside of that people getting hurt as soon as we bring this child into my house should have definite been the first warning. they don't know the little girl and he gave all his trust to her after 3 weeks, as soon as she was adopted, kids were being hurt and then others was murdered. as soon as the nun was murderer he should have raised a couple red flags. he cheated on purpose, she accidentally inured her daughter. and he didn't even tell her until a very long time. she suffered with that guilt for a very long time, he said to basically get over it so he anit feel guilty either. but beside all that THEY suffered a miscarriage which is the whole reason Esther is even there. again aside all that all these people getting hurt and murdered is definitely a warning. ESPECIALLY when esther takes the flowers, she is a smart girl and can read as well. they even had a memorial plague. even he gave excuses because her arm was broke but he was also there when she took the flowers, they made him play the bad guy because right then he didnt care about his dead baby over this random little girl.

As I said up top by the time that none was murdered he should’ve questioned something anything his own child was lit on fire. I don’t trust nobody after three weeks I don’t care if I adopted them or not. I don’t care if they’re family or not we’re talking three very short weeks that’s not even a month. And after a couple weeks so much shit went down that he just fully ignored. Just like James said it wasn’t until she outright hit on him that he saw something wrong if my child was lit on fire and locked in that place that was lit on fire there is no way that I’m gonna sit here and not question how this could’ve happened. He cheated on her sober and cautious. She accidentally injured her child while drunk. No I’m saying it’s good to be an alcoholic but there are plenty alcoholics that are perfectly fine as an alcoholic. That’s why it’s still legal to be alcoholic. And again after injuring her child she suffered tremendously for it. He chilled in his wives face like he ain’t do nothing wrong she’s at least understood that she was at fault. No I’m saying either one of them are perfect. But if my wife or husband was ever uncomfortable in our home, I’m a listen. Flesh and blood murder each other and they be children too so yeah we do think and know that children can do this it’s been documented recorded they’ve been arrested it’s very possible it’s unsettling but it ain’t never gonna happen. We as an audience know that the sister was just terrified same as the little brother. But if you look at it from his point of view I mean even buy the flowers I would’ve been questioning she knew it was a memorial, they have a memorial plaque. Clearly the miscarriage mattered more to the wife than it did to the husband even at that point because why would you overlook that? whatever happened before doesn’t matter it’s what the actions are doing right now and he had plenty of warning signs that that girl was crazy even down to the nun questioning it and then Turned up dead. It takes only one episode of criminal minds to like fill in the blank 😂

Not only is this movie based on a Czech woman´s story, but the doctor, who called Kate was also a Czech actor, named Karel Roden. I just think it´s cool how there happen to be 2 instances of such a small country in a movie, that pretty much has nothing to do with it.

In defense of John, I think the broken arm scene is the tipping point for where he has to chose between his kids and his wife. It would be nearly impossible to believe that Esther broke her own arm - I’m still in shock and I SAW it - and breaking a child’s arm is clearly over a line, even if his wife is struggling. Esther’s a master manipulator, and the only actual evidence of abuse he’s seen is from Tricia AGAINST Esther. It’s a lose-lose.

Respectfully disagree man lol just recently rewatched & John was literally the worst, a gaslighting dummy (not to sound too harsh😅😂) sorry but homie’s first red flag should’ve been when Esther wanted to sleep next to him on the first night (any grown man with sense would note this- may I remind you he literally just had a boner 30 seconds before), but then he also dismisses EVERYTHING Esther does but finds everyyy opportunity to belittle and minimize Kate & her worries. Even when the nun tries to warn him, he’s like well that doesn’t mean Esther pushed this girl who was bullying her 😵‍💫Dude was just waayyy too invested in a little girl he JUST met, it’s my one kinda gripe with the film cus it’s borderline unrealistically aloof the only way the character kindve works tho is by him being a douche who’s so disconnected from his family and what’s actually going on (I wish they played this up more like maybe he too focused on work & just doesn’t care) but either way- WOOF💀

The original script makes Esther even darker when it goes into her backstory more. A copy & paste quote.
*In the original script, her past was explained more in depth. Leena's mother died of AIDS when she was young, and her father sexually abused her her whole childhood, rending her infertile. She was diagnosed with hypopituitarism, a rare hormonal disorder that caused proportional dwarfism, making her stuck in the body of a child. Once her father found a new lover, he told her she'd never be a real woman, which caused her to go insane and killed her father and his girlfriend in rage. She was then sent to the Institute, where she was kept in a straightjacket that gave her scars due to being too violent. She escaped, and turned to a prostitution trade to find love through wealthy pedophiles. Once she was arrested, she pretended to be a child and was sent to an orphanage. Ever since, Leena tries to find love through her adoptive fathers, since it's all she's ever known, but is always rejected due to looking like a child.*

Something that is so interesting to me about this movie is the ribbons. If someone took the ribbons off her, I don't think anyone would look at the scars and go "wow, those look like marks from a straight jacket. Therefore this must be an adult with dwarfism who stayed in an asylum." Just seeing her scars, they would assume that she was a child who was abused severely by her previous family and she could use that to her advantage so much - she could use it to explain her strange behavior and her emotional outbursts and it could be a point to manipulate people so much better. Not only being a little girl but being a victim in people's eyes - I am surprised she didn't use that to her advantage

Did you know that the poster/cover art isn't actually a real photo of Isabelle? The reason it's so creepy is because of this (taken from IMDB): The subtle uneasiness of the film's poster is due to the image of Esther's face. It is perfectly symmetrical. Half of her face has been mirrored to form a whole face (notice the identical twists of hair on each side).
