I think unless you live in Australia, especially rural Australia, you don’t really get how terrifying the character Mick is.
I live on a fringe town, halfway between whoop whoop and a city, and I cannot count the number of men just like Mick I cross on a daily basis (minus the murder I hope). Regular true blue blokes who have an off sense of humour but genuinely mean well and are willing to help someone out, either for free or for a slab of their preferred beer.
Wolf Creek does a wonderful job at showing the difference between city kids (Ben, Liz and Kristy) and rural townspeople (the people in the servo and Mick of course).
And honestly Micks set up is eerily similar to family members properties, crap piled randomly around the place, sheds upon sheds…hell my pop, who is lovingly known as Grumble Bum, is a bush mechanic and his property is lined with dead and hollowed out cars.
But hey if ya live in Australia, or want to visit Australia, head on a trip out to some rural towns, see the beautiful countryside and help some rural towns financially, there are some wonderful people out there and a day trip for you can help them out immensely. EDIT!! As a lovely commenter mentioned, you gotta respect these people and their homes. They have a lot of pride in their home town and a huge amount of distrust
I lived in AUS for a few years as a kid, but only in the city (Sydney then Melbourne). Adult me's wanted to visit the Flinders range and the really ancient parts of the continent for some time, though. Maybe I'll swing by some of the places you talk about and meet some real good people, and hopefully avoiding the serial killers.
So do some of the "rural" have a chip on their shoulder like Mick did? It must seem like it.
I fully agree that people should go for a trip out in the more rural and bush areas, though I can't stress this enough: Respect the Locals and Respect their Home. Because if you go out there and act like a ass, you will get your head kicked in by the kind of people that live out there.
@@homelesshannah50 Less a chip and more a "You aren't here for a real reason". Also doesn't help that rural places are a lot more different than the city, and most Aussies live on the coasts with the cities where life is a lot easier and access to most things we take for granted, unlike them.
So true. I live in regional QLD, and havd spent a lot of time backpacking in NT and north WA. This movie is so scary for me, because it feels so real.
As an Aussie, this movie fucking terrified me. The idea of the Aussie Boogeyman being someone like Mick really works since we have a culture where we like to try and help out people who need it, especially in rural areas where a mate's help can literally be life or death. And to see someone like Mick, who most of us would see as a god-send if we're in a sticky situation, turn out to be a murdering psychopath is truly terrifying. And I think you have to have grown up here to really understand that.
Yeah. Most of the people in rural areas are great people. But someone like Mick I could see existing without being some over the top stereotype/character. And that scares me.
Living out in the country for a while, every now and then you'd run into a guy like Mick. They seemed otherwise normal, if not a bit crude/creepy. But you couldn't shake the feeling that he has a few bodies buried on his property.

I knew so many avuncular Mick Taylor types as a child in Perth. It was extremely unsettling to see this character turn into an absolute psychopath.
Or just read the Ivan Milat story, who this was based on. He only ever targeted backpackers, you'd be fine.

Fun fact: the couple that find Ben near the end of the story are based on Peter Falconio (murdered by Bradley Murdoch) and his girlfriend, Joanne Lees. They're even driving a Kombi van with an almost identical colour scheme to the one driven by Falconio and Lees. This was McLean's way of creating a happy ending for Falconio and Lees; rather than become victims, they become the heroes.
That's sad, but I find it a bit weird.

There was a scientific article in 2014 analyzing psychopathy portrayed in the movies. Of all the movie characters studied, Mick Taylor was one of a small handful that is considered a realistic psychopath.

I moved to California from W.A. I have lost count of how many tines people have asked me where I learned to speak English so well. 🤷
And after I watched this movie there is no way I'm going to Australia
I like how the supposed hero of the story at first (Liz) is the first one to be finished off by Mick, and the one you thought was long dead already (Ben) ends up being the only survivor. Its a nice twist on things.

Yeah. And we never see him putting forth any of the heroic effort that the two victims did. (Well, except for pulling himself off those nails. That took some toughness). He just stumbles out of Mick's shed when the murderer happens to be out, collapses from exhaustion in the middle of the Outback, and is lucky enough to get picked up by two other tourists. The two gals worked so hard to evade and defeat Mick, only to be brutally murdered. That's what makes this such a rough movie.

After hearing about how the set was thanks to the passion of the director makes me realize just how bullshit some directors are when mistreating their cast and actors. As great as the Shining was Kubrick stepped over the line with how poorly Shelley Duvall was treated on set. A director can get the exact result as needed by just being passionate and showing that to the crew.

To be frank, this can apply to just about every job ever! A good office manager can make your work feel like home, while a bad boss would feel like the devil.
Being a manager, director, owner, whatever, is so important because you're supposed to be there to get your job done (in this case, make the vision come to life) while also ensuring everyone else is equipped to do their jobs.
Happy cast means better quality of work.

Shelly is a grown up if she didn't like it she could have clapped back or found another gig. And that's NOTHING compared to how the director treated Susannah York on the set of "Images". Or how Otto Preminger treated Dorothy Dandridge when he made "Carmen"

I grew up with this movie being an Aussie, and I'd like to say that I've met with John Jarratt on multiple occasions, and honestly he's a real nice bloke, so different from his character Mick. Always fun to chat with.

I worked on a TV series shoot with Paul Lightfoot recently and I showed him this video once I heard you mentioned his siblings. Lovely guy, he started to tear and showed his whole family. So proud and nostalgic about seeing them again. Thanks James

I love the way you have added in genuine Australian slang when doing this kill count. It makes it that much more hilarious when watching as an Aussie.
As another commenter mentioned below, it really is like this (minus the murder!!) in rural towns. They really did a fab job of capturing that aspect of outback, bogan Australia.
Not that many movies really scare me probably because I've seen so many, but this movie genuinely gave me goosebumps through the whole movie. Mick Taylor is a villain for the ages.

One thing I like about Mick's character is that they don't try to give him any redeeming qualities, or make him "kewl" or anything - he's simply a 110% scumbag.

Definitely a good example of the human killer. Alongside films like Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer and The Hitcher where the killer isn't dressed in an outfit or having any supernatural elements.
Just regular people who can exist in the real world.
Every film I've seen do this usually works pretty well and this is no exception.
And it's a decent starting point for those who want to go into Australian horror. At least alongside Roadgames.
And let's not forget about *My Friend Dahmer,* a movie about Jeffrey Dahmer before the killing spree he became infamous for
Did you ever watch The House That Jack Built? That movie was the most disturbing movie I've ever seen, if you haven't seen it it's about a Serial Killer whose talking to someone (I can't say who without spoiling it) about his different murders and it's like this film where it's just so cold and bleak, it's a great movie but it's one I don't think I could watch a 2nd time, which is weird normal non Supernatural things usually don't creep me out.
Unfortunately they leaned into supernatural elements in the wolf creek books iirc

I'm so glad you decided to cover this movie (and here's hoping the sequel, and that you give the series a look-see too). Back in 2015/2016 when they were filming the series for Stan (an Australian streaming service) they were filming it around the area that I lived at the time in far north South Australia. Because the town I was living in at the time is a major (and the closest) regional centre to where they were filming, we saw a lot of the crew coming through town doing their shopping.
Anyway, long story short, I was working retail at the time and a friend of mine and I got to serve John Jarratt personally. Nicest dude ever, if you'd never saw the Wolf Creek films, you'd never believe he could portray a psychopath so well.
A lot of us Australian kids grew up with him also. He was married to Noni Hazlehurst for about a decade while she was host of a national kids program called Play School (which he occasionally helped with) and they both co-hosted a DIY variety show called Better Homes and Gardens until their divorce (she kept presenting solo til 2005, the show itself still runs to this day). He was initially a carpenter by trade, so it made sense for him to have a big role in that show. Basically he's been a staple of big and small Aussie screens for decades and if I ever run into him again, I'm buying the drinks

It's so chilling how many of Mick Taylor's practices are grounded in reality. The Outback must be a truly terrifying place in which to flee from a psychopathic killer. It just seems so infinite and desolate. Also, if Mick Taylor doesn't get you, the world's most venomous snake (the inland taipan) will.
This is the scariest movie I've seen. It's so sickeningly well done, and the terror of being in a scenario like this is captured very well. I hate that I know people who come off Mick does, at least when he's around others...
I met John Jarratt (Mick) July of this year at Australian comiccon (specifically Supanova) and he was SO unbelievably nice and took the time to speak to us, definitely an experience i wont forget.
He's always at them lol, I met him at one and he was so lovely. And not a superficial way either, seemed genuinely nice.

Holy dooley am I looking forward to your Kill Count of Wolf Creek 2! A third movie is supposed to come out this year and supposedly also a third season of the show at some point. The books, if folks are curious to read them, should know that they are more graphic than the films by a mile. Beauty.

@@sinnsage First book gives you Mick's childhood and backstory that led to the bloke we see in the first movie. Second book follows a similar plot as the second season of the show and also gives more backstory to Mick serving in Vietnam, while illustrating how off his nut he is... I would recommend reading them as they're some good entertainment.

I will say, season 1 of wolf creek was fucking phenomenal, I really enjoyed it a lot.

Meeting John jarratt literally two days ago then rewatching these films and starting the series has been something. He’s just a bloody nice guy and vs then seeing him as Mick god he’s an amazing actor! I was so pleased to see you cover this 10 months ago and rewatching the count it feels just as great

This is definitely on my list of horror movies that, while I have to admit were well made and acted, for the most part, they're just too mean spirited to watch again. Movies on my list include Wolf Creek, Eden Lake, Them, Hereditary. Although I consider Hereditary to be one of the most effective horror movies I've ever seen, amazing acting, beautifully shot. But I could never put myself through that two hour panic attack in movie form again. There are plenty, like Funny Games and An American Crime. Movies that are horrifying, because you know these things did happen, and will happen again. Scenarios like these happen in real life, all over the world. I detest the feeling movies like these that leave me with.
Now, there is a movie I watched last night called Glorious. I watched the first 15 seconds of the trailer to watch the movie, because I liked what I'd already seen, and didn't want to risk spoilers. For a while, Glorious was looking like it was going to make the list I made earlier. But it takes some great turns, and there are some reveals that completely redeem it. The practical effects on the god and tons of actual fake blood the saturated the second half of the movie elevate it from a 3 out of 5, to a 4 out of 5. It's a hit and miss movie, but you definitely can't watch it twice , knowing what you know after watching it the first time. Not in the way you saw it the first time, at least.
Eden lake is so fucking horrific there is no way I could watch that all again.
I can watch Wolf Creek again, but Eden Lake really crosses the line for me. At least WC has one survivor.
I love how this movie does a fake out on the final girl trope by not only having the seemingly final girl getting killed half way through, but the one guy of the group being the only survivor because he just runs away.
Can we talk about Chelsea’s voice acting at the end there?! Keep up the good work Chelsea your hard work is paying off!

Liz is such a good character & you're rooting for her to survive to the end that it's just devastating when she doesn't. I think the worst part about her death is that it never shows or tells us exactly what happened to her so it's left to our own minds to imagine it.

I cant actually sit down and watch this movie (simply because of the content) but as an Aussie it's so nice to watch a Kill Count on an Australian movie. People in the Australian film industry are so incredibly passionate, and I love hearing about production on classics like this. Cheers, James! I'm making you an honorary Aussie! I've met John Jarret a few times. I live in South Australia and he's a stable of the Aussie convention circuits. He loves talking about these films, and quite happily will slip into character if you want him to.

I remember when Wolf Creek first became available on DVD back in 2006, I was 6, and my parents had friends up to watch it since they weren't able to watch it in cinemas. I was forced to watch cartoons down the other end of the house with my brother as they were watching it in the living room. I remember getting bored at one point and sneaking out to see what they were doing and ended up getting the crap scared out of me. Good times.
I did similar things as a kid too, I'd pretend to fall asleep in the lounge room then my mum would watch horror movies, I couldn't react to it, because then she'd know I'm awake. I think that's one of the reasons why horror movies don't scare me, because I taught myself not to be scared by it.

You remember it? I was a British backpacker just out of school, and this movie was released months before me and my best mate went to Aus. He put that on within the first week of us being there, it was absolutely brutal lol.
Love this series so much, some of it was shot close to home and I’ve gotten to see the tunnels from the second movie in person

I remember this movie getting a lot of detraction when it came out, but I loved it. The characters are all well written and there's no real "hierarchy" as far as the victims go. In most horror movies, you can spot a mile away who the main survivors are gonna be and this never does that
Absolutely. The characters just feel so realistic, while also being likable. I was really rooting for them all the way. I think this film is one of the best of the "torture" subgenre because it isn't depraved in its attitudes. It depicts depravity, but its sympathies are with the victims.
I like how they don''t do the final girl trope and instead have a final guy, then he gets blamed for it all.
This is done even better in the sequel
Even though I disagree with Roger Ebert's zero out of four star review for this movie, he was right in pointing out that it is not a movie for everyone!
Wolf Creek is now one of my all-time favorite movies! It takes most of the standard slasher cliches and tosses them in the garbage!
Yeah my girlfriend and I were completely sure Liz would be the one to make it out, especially when she started being a resourceful badass. The movie was unpredictable in a good way about this.
It's delightful to have James back, but I am glad we still get to see Zoran regularly (and Chelsea, but I watch the podcast, so I see her there). Got attached to that dude, too 😊
20 minutes of straight condensing, making and landing comedic original jokes, great skits and great background+production value. I have no clue how you make the video feel short, James but it's always enough to make me wait however long it takes for the next. Good luck, hope wc2 gets covered whenever you can, we all know that great things take time
I remember watching this movie late at night, and I got chills when we got around to the 3rd act. This is one of those films where the build-up to the violence pays dividends. Several other films have tried to do this and failed miserably. I think the main reason why this one lands is because it doesn't go for anything crazy or over the top; It's a terrifying human doing what he does and we're just along for the ride. The Head-On-A-Stick scene is such a gut punch; You really think Liz is gonna get away and be our final girl... until he rams that knife into her.

This probably one of the most disturbing movies for me simply because this is something that happens and did happen in real life.

As an Australian myself I feel so happy that James covered this and enjoyed it. Mick Taylor is a great character and really shows how some true Aussie blokes will help ya and give some Aussie humour(but no murdering I hope) and he is truly terrifying. They did a great job on the movie and I’m so happy that James reviewed this.
As someone who lives in rural Australia, everyone I know who has seen this movie loves it, despite many being the type to probably skip over similar movies such as ‘Saw’ and ‘Hostel’. It portrays the isolation of the outback so well, and the charisma of some folk alongside the uninviting, violent nature of others and blends them perfectly into one character.
I saw John Jarratt at Supanova in Perth this year. I didn't talk to him. So, I didn't technically meet him. I was standing a few metres away and staring at him in awe. He was just sitting there; resting, and drinking coffee. I've got no idea why I didn't wanna go talk to him. I just didn't. I'd have the exact same reaction if I saw anyone else famous in real life. Especially if it was my favourite voice actress in the whole world. I'm a full grown adult. But, just seeing John Jarratt was enough to make me geek out like an excited fanboy

As an Aussie and horror lover, I’ll say I love this movie and even met John Jaratt at a convention a couple years ago. Happy to see my favourite channel cover this movie and as a side note, I’ve definitely heard worse Aussie accents your’s wasn’t that bad

The attention to detail, the script, acting, score, direction, cinematography, pacing, editing, and aspects taken from real events all combine to make Wolf Creek one if the greatest horror movies ever! Oh, and "once they pass the Powerpuff Girls" had me in stitches once I realized the city of Townsville was on the map!
I remember watching this sometime last year and being blown away at just how raw it was. John Jarratt utterly nails the role and it's fantastic.
For only 1.5 million dollars to work with, Greg McLean made one hell of a great horror movie! I did not know he was on such a low budget

I’m really glad you’re doing this movie, it was a legit phenomenon here in Australia when it was released. My mum sneaked me into it despite me being too young to get in and bluffed the ticket collector to get me in. And then she was so disturbed she wanted to leave when everything was going down in the second half.

When Liz got the knife in the back I became deflated watching it. You're rooting for her to save her friends, like she is GOING to make it happen. Then to be turned to a "head on a stick" was such a bummer. Like James said she should of used the rifles butt stock and smashed his stupid face in.
One of my favourite things to do is tell people overseas to watch this movie before coming over to see Australia.
It does also really have something that a lot of horror media lacks these days and that's subtly. This movie didn't scare me when I watched it, but a few days later when I woke up and realised just how realistic it is. If you're ever lost in those deserts, there's more of a chance finding a needle in a haystack than you.
Before I started watching this channel, I always thought horror movies favored women as the victims. I had no idea that most of them were a blueberry pie chart because I never bothered to count the kills for myself. I've learned a lot from Kill Count. Thanks for the great and entertaining content, James.
I'd really love to see if the gender ratio of kills tends to follow the gender ratio of total characters. I have a feeling it does, but the reason why it seems like more women are victims is that horror movies tend to have more female major characters than other genres. I could be absolutely wrong, but I'd love to know one way or the other.
@@pat2romeagreed. it seems people would rather see woman suffer than men in general in horror films, and it’s concerning. i want more horror films where there’s a male who suffers the same as a female would in the usual horror film. of course there are many that aren’t like this but look at martyrs for example which follows the rule of female suffering
@@pat2romeit might also seem that way because a lot of slasher flicks specifically throw some eye candy into the film, so it seems more exploitative I imagine

@@Ava-nf2qq I don't think it is as much that "people would rather see woman suffer than me", I think it is more that people sympathise far more with female suffering rather than male suffering. A guy being tortured does not drive anywhere near the visceral emotional response in the audience to seeing the same thing happen to a woman.

Would love for you to do a kill count for the wolf creek tv series. That scene where he takes out the family while they're all sitting around the campfire having a good time is really disturbing and is one of those scenes that sticks with you.

It’s like Sergio Leone, Spielberg and McLean himself combined forces and made the ultimate Australian outback nightmare. It’s cheeky and funny, haunting, brutal and completely enthralling the entire way through. Love your work Dead Meat Crew 🙌

Thank you for talking about the real crimes that inspired this movie. It’s difficult to enjoy movies that are loosely based on true events , but it shouldn’t be ignored, it has to be talked about, and you did it very respectfully.
I love this film. Proud of my country. Those haunting Cellos playing on the drive to the crater haunt my dreams on long road trips when I stare out the window. First time I watched it, we had this biblical storm crash down after a whole week of bushfires and we had a blackout straight after but I had a portable DVD player and watched it in pitch darkness.
Wolf Creek stuff (both movies and TV series) doesn't receive NEARLY as much love and attention as it deserves. I encourage everyone to check it out and spread it as much as possible. Mick is one of the most disturbing and frightening killers I've ever seen in any media.
