In this episode I brought up how the case of Natalia Grace inspired the movie's development. When I did, I gave the INCORRECT INFORMATION that Grace "wound up being an adult." This is NOT THE CASE - recent DNA evidence has proven that Natalia Grace was, in fact, a child with dwarfism who was sadly abused by her adoptive parents. The DNA evidence confirming this only became available this week (possibly as late as yesterday) and this Kill Count was edited and uploaded back in mid-December, so we didn't have that information at the time. Still, I shouldn't have stated an allegation as a fact. I apologize for getting it wrong and for potentially further spreading that harmful misinformation.
More info here: people.com/natalia-grace-dna-test-seemingly-proves-real-age-8421943
This is why you’re the best James. Most people would shrug and move on, when just admitting a mistake is so easy.
All good, thanks for clarifying!
Understandable! Not your fault at all.
All good. Your compassion and effort to always give proper information even if after the fact is amazing. Glad to have been with this channel since the original Friday counts! Thank you for always leading by example when you tell us to be good people!
james and chelsea, as always, continue to be good people
Just pointing out, Natalia Grace was actually a child, and her abusive adoptive parents claimed she was an adult while knowing she wasn’t
Wait, really?
@@bellaknightR597Yeah you should look into it. They legally changed her age then fled the country, knowing she was a child AND that there was going to be a language barrier given she didn't know English very well, because.....well she was a (not American) child.
Yeah James literally said the opposite in this video which is kinda gross. Big mess up.
@@BaronVonBielskiJames has corrected this in the pinned comment. This video was filmed and edited in mid-December, way before the new DNA evidence was found.
@@BaronVonBielski james corrected himself in the pinned comment and on twitter. mistakes do happen.
you could also say that the reason she looks more like an adult in the prequel is because she hadn’t perfected the disguise yet
That’s actually a great way to look at it!
That's how I saw it
Even better if we’re to assume that First Kill is from Esther’s perspective and Orphan 2009 is from the family’s perspective. Hence why she’s so believable as a child in their eyes
it also works well bc maybe we see her more as an adult now that we're in the know, like how suddenly a picture changes when you point an aspect out. So now that we know Esther is a 30 smtg woman, her "adultness" becomes prominent, her developed facial structure and stretch of her skin become obvious. Barbora Škrlová passed for an unfortunate looking overweight boy pretty well. And about the disguise too, it's in this movie that Esther begins to bind her chest, and in between the two movies could've acquired and learnt to use makeup and lose weight to become scrawnier and smaller and makes sure to avoid her false teeth being seen. so it's just possible with a stretch of the imagination.
Excellent point
I can actually forgive her looking older in this movie because since this is one of her first times pretending to be a kid she hasn’t mastered the art of looking exactly like one yet.
Its not her first time pretending to be a kid. They talk about a family in the opening that took her in that she killed.
@@SlasherHorrorMovies1 Notice I said, “One of her first times.” Not the first time.
but like... her having more experience acting like a kid doesn't explain her LOOKING younger, just acting younger right? unless it's canon that she learned makeup techniques later on, which would make sense
Isabelle Furhman once again proves to be an amazing actress. It's so cool how they were able to pretty convincingly make her look as young as she was in the first film without any cgi. Make up and practical effects will always be more impressive. Julia Styles was also amazing, and I never would've seen that twist coming.
Very much agreed
Amen
They're both so good.
Uhhh... She looks like she's in her 20's, doing baby doll play.
I mean... They did a really good job, and it looks better than it would have with CGI certainly, but also... She still just doesn't look like a child. Most people seem to disagree with me so I'm glad most can get immersed in it, but I just can't see her as looking like a child.
I thought a prequel could never pull off a twist even almost as wild as the first orphan but I was so wrong
Technically the Fear Street sequels are prequels and they managed to pull off twists
Literally, I was so worried about the prequel being a remake of things we already know, but when the twist came in I was like “oh wait! This is different!” XD
Nothing in this prequel was surprising or shocking tho
@@brbaic9364if you were expecting a twist like in the original than no not at all
Prequel could never pull off a twist even almost as wild as the first orphan but I was so wrong
Natalia Grace was probably actually a child and not an adult like the adoptive parents claimed. Recently, DNA analysis, dental records and an endocrinologist’s evaluation show she was 9-11 years old. So the adoptive parents had a literal child's age changed from 9 to 22 years old and dumped her in an apartment while they moved to Canada
So did Dr. Phil apologize for the whole "demon child" thing?
Tbh it's easy to find out if someone is faking their age that way... if in a few years they're taller, they weren't faking it.
Natalia's adoptive parents were absolutely unforgivable.
@@baydiac Well she did have spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita which could affect her growth in certain ways, but I don't know enough about it to say more. She was also only about 9 or so, so she might not hit a growth spurt for a couple years
Natalia Grace was born in 2003. Her biological mother was confirmed by a DNA test. Her adoptive parents abandoned her at 10 years old and legally changed her age to 22
It’s actually just been proven over the last few days. They found her birth mother who had her birth records and the dna test came back to confirm it. She was born in like 2003
The plot twist with Tricia was a brilliant move, because not only was it unexpected, not only did it give Lena a worthy foe, but it makes the movies nature as a prequel more interesting. We knew Tricia, Gunner, and Alan die from the premise of the original movie, but learning about Tricia and Gunnet and what theyd done makes their deaths almost cathartic. And Alan dying of a genuine accident after all is said and done feels appropriately tragic for the sole Allbright who didn't do anything wrong. Ultimately you wind up being okay with Lena getting away with it all scot free because you know she gets hers two years later as justice for people like the detective or Anna, and Tricia and Gunner are so awful even compared to Lena its justice for them to lose to our favorite little serial killer
One they dont mention the albrights in the og film so this was way before the Albright's. It needs a sequel about tge sullivan family she was adopted into cuz the Sullivan family was the first american family she was adopted into. And there was an estonian family that leeba was adopted into before first kill that they gotta also do.
I've seen some people say that in this movie Esther is the hero
I have to correct James on this, for the “real life” case of Natalia Grace, she was not actually a grown woman. She was a child with dwarfism that was abused by her adoptive family.
The mother conditioned her into believing she was grown and somehow was able to reage her through the court. They abused her severally, pushing her down stairs, beating her, refusing surgeries, making her walk without shoes. And then sent her to live on her own when she was just 7 years old.
Natalia’s birth mother has come forward to prove she was a child. And Natalia has even had a genetics/DNA test to prove she is the age her bio mother said. Natalia’s dentist said she had children’s teeth as well.
Natalia has been fighting for justice and to put her adoptive parents behind bars. I recommend the series on Max
Come forward to prove she was a child . And Natalie has even had a genetics / DNA test to prove she is the age her bio mother said . Natalies dentist said she had children's teeth as well . On max for real life
And to that note, she was adopted by them in 2010 not even a full year after the original Orphan movie came out. Coincidence?
why did her birth mother abandon her?
This was corrected in a community post
@@cynicaltruth7486 but it is lol
That case about the girl who was adopted... she was not an adult... they did a blood test and found she was actually 9 when her adoptive parents made her go live by herself. She was born in 2003. The parents are terrible terrible people.
This. People be spreading abusive fake news, it is horrible
and i was also shocked to find out they're the biological parents of that kid who was lauded as a math genius and went to college to study it when he was in middle school or something.
EDIT: just found out, it was elementary school. tf?
Thank you!!! I know it hasn't been that long since the video was posted but i wish there were more comments pointing this out. She was abused then abandoned by her awful adoptive "parents" and i can't imagine what it must feel like, having to process that trauma while people accuse her of being a psychopathic and homicidal adult despite ALL evidence pointing to her being a child all along. I hope she's doing okay and that she gets to really tell her side of the story in the new parts of the documentary series... poor girl. Even this year she'll be a year younger than those people claimed her to be when she was 9, i really hope she'll be alright in the end
What are you talking about? She was an adult dwarf. There wasn't a blood test proving she was a child. Go troll somewhere else, don't ruin Dead Meat's comment section with your lies.
I think by the time dead meat produced this the DNA test info wasn't public. Sure it's a new video but it takes a bit to create.
Isabelle Furhman portrayed Esther with ease and compassion. It somehow astounds me how much this film has accumulated in the box office.
I think her performance here was better than the first one, also Julia Stiles playing the mom was unexpected a compelling character as well
I can’t wait for Orphan 3!
I don't recall this film being in theaters, I think you're referring to the original Orphan film, this was released on Paramount+
@@DodoRibeiro-ts6po yeah, she’s _very_ different but just as good as Vera Farmiga. Great performances
@@erichfiedler1481First Kill was also in theaters I went to go see it at my local theater
I love how this prequel ended up making me root for Esther to best people that felt even more evil than she was. She's such a fun villain.
I am actually amazed how they made her look like a nine year old I thought it would be really hard but they managed to pull it off and it looks great
Not even
No it doesn't, it looks like a 23 year old woman kneeling to maker herself look shorter (I know that's not what actually happened but it looks like it)
honestly even if the effect didnt work, im glad they at least tried instead of using digital de-aging or just hiring another actress
@@magdaluxe_deluxePlus these movies are camp as hell, and the weirdness of her looking like an adult adds to the hilarity. I prefer this one to the first in part because she looks old 😂
@@cheezyfilmsproductions1842 I mostly agree with you. She definitely looks older than in the first film and doesn't pass for 9 at all. Although I find she has a very ambiguous face in the same way people say I do. For context- I'm 25 and about 50% of people guess me to be 23-26, while the other half presume something between 16-19.
Honestly if I had watched this movie without knowing the Isabelle's age or the time elapsed between releases, I wouldn't know if she was in her mid teens or her early twenties.
Also what you said about the uncanny valley feeling adding to the surrealness of the entire plot is spot on.
There's been new updates in the Natalia Grace case that they referenced that inspired the prequel to happen! Turns out in August of last year, they confirmed that she was actually a child, and was abandoned by her adoptive family... Yikes!
And an even newer update as well: Her newest adoptive family has come out and said very negative things about her, and accused her of “stabbing her family in the back.” What a freaking crazy story that continues to get even crazier!
"Something ain't right with Natalia. This girl is tweakin'" Antwon can be heard claiming to producers. "I feel like she's the enemy in the house. And she said to us, we have held her hostage. Made us look like we're the enemy."
"Natalia is stabbing her family in the back over a complete lie," Cynthia chimes in.
"She's done other things too, but this was a new low," Antwon claims. "Natalia does not have emotions for nothing but herself. We're done. We're done with her."
@@genghiscan2918what are you trying to prove? She was a child abandoned by her family at 9 years old. It’s evil.
@@BaronVonBielski They weren’t trying to prove anything, they were just quoting the new family.
Hey in the real life case, the parents lied about her being an adult and she actually went through a lot of abuse at their hands. I think it’s worth mentioning to not further the false narrative.

I really love how the mother character wasn't a damn victim in this! Most of the family were terrible people, in fact, aside from the husband. I love that this prequel did something new!
Its safe to say Isabelle Fuhrman and Julia Stiles were in the same level of acting goodness. That twist was so unexpected and this is surprisingly one of the best prequel horror movies out there, which is a rarity these days
About the real life story of the girl with a growth disorder being “actually an adult” if you look into that case it looks more like the adoptive parents made that up as an excuse to get away with abandoning her.
Edit: glad they put a pinned comment correcting the information
This precisely. There are however a few actual cases of grown adults (usually scammers) pretending to be children, the most horrific of which that comes to mind being the Klara Mauerova case - though whether Mauerova was actually "duped" into believing this/actually believed it,or not,is up for debate seeing as it was part of her defense. Please only google this case if you do have a strong stomach though as it does involve graphic details of severe child abuse.
Luckily James corrected this mistake in a community post, so that’s nice
Pinned comment, they edited this in mid December before that news came out a few days ago
Yeah there’s undeniable evidence that she’s a child. Not only her birth certificate, but the age of her (DNA confirmed) bio mom as well. I’m actually really disappointed they neglected to even read the Wikipedia article before putting that misinformation in the video…. Poor girl…
@@tux_duhThe DNA test linking her to her biological mom was available all the way back in 2020. A simple glance at the Wikipedia page would confirm the sources and their dates. From the beginning all of the evidence pointed to it being a fabrication, they shouldn’t have put it in the video at all imo ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Julia Stiles is soooo good! I wish she took on more roles these days.
She's truly an underrated actress. Julia was amazing in this movie
Something they could do with a third Orphan movie would be to call it Orphans and have a family adopt multiple kids, Esther just being one of them, and she ends up not being the only psycho...
Oh, I would definitely watch that.
I feel bad for the husband, he lost his own daughter to his own son and his evil wife covered it up and not turning her own son in, such an evil family hiding this from the husband/father
I first watched Orphan when it came out on DVD in 2009 (Yep, that long ago) and I was obsessed with it because of its character Esther/Leena. When I found out the prequel was being made by Paramount and Isabelle Furhman was returning as Esther, I was skeptical to see how they pulled it off considering Isabelle is a 20 year old young lady. And I gotta say they kicked ass with the effects of Esther still being a 10 year old. I give this movie a 9/10.
Another thing: I was also stunned to find out Paramount was gonna produce this even though the first movie is owned by Warner Bros.
She was actually like 25 when this was filmed, so even older. She was born in 97.
Regarding that real life event, wasn't it recently confirmed that the child was a child and was found to have dwarfism. I believe the parents are arrested for what they did to the child.
It actually makes sense that she looks older in the prequel because at the end of the original she takes off her makeup and disguise to reveal her older appearance.
I can't believe you never mentioned the most tragic death in the movie, the little rat buddy in the vents
I honestly never thought that a prequel to Orphan would be able to pull off surprises and twists especially considering that we already knew the big reveal from the first movie! I was genuinely shook they managed to pull off the crazy twists and turns in this movie!
Also heard a 3rd orphan movie is gonna be made the only thing that would make sense is if it’s a prequel of first kill maybe what got her put into saarne institute as Leena is dead in the first movie unless they are going off the alternate ending
I doubt they would get Isabelle to play Leena/Esther again as she is now older and they had to do a lot of shit to make her younger
“She wants him she needs him, oh baby oh baby” 😂😂 the fact you quoted that, good lord we’re old man
It still saddens me how in the real life case the parents saw the first orphan and made up this story about their child who was actually a kid and they even legally changed her name
James, Natalia Grace was recently found to be an actual child at the time. Her adoptive parents lied and accused a child of being a monster and then abandoned her. A blood test proves that now she is only 20 so she would have been 7-10 years old when she was adopted.

I LOVE That they didnt Make her the Hero Unlike in Dont Breath 2 shes still a sick and Twisted Vile Person she just now has a Adversary
Honestly
Dont breath as a franchise feels so weird having such shitty people as its protagonists so they need to make the antagonists somehow even worse
Just a point of correction. The Natalia Grace case referenced here has been the subject of a 2023 documentary that proved that she was in fact a child at the time of her adoption.
I don't think the de-aging was as successful as the team hoped it would be, but I feel like a majority of this film was more impressive than the first one. Isabelle Furhman and Julia Stiles are outstanding in it.
Even after 13 years have passed, Isabelle still manages to give off an amazing performance! 👏
After this movie, I'm convinced Julia Stiles would play a great Ghostface in "SCREAM 7". I think she'd be like Mrs. Loomis and she'd do it great.
The exterior of the Estonian mental hospital was filmed at my 3rd great grandfathers house that became into an orphanage that became a behavioural health foundation in Winnipeg
And maybe the interior
How cool!!
Esther is one character who makes me nervous. Shes terrifying
Isabelle Furhman is a literal star! I saw the movie before this kill count and my mom and I loved it!
The writing and delivery in this episode was great! 😂 Well done everybody!
13:15 "OH SHOOT, WHAT THE FRICK?" Oh James, you're so freaking hilarious.
The Childish Gambino Line killed me 16:30 😂
Honestly I was surprised how well Isabelle killed it however many years later, like even though she was a full blown adult she managed to do a great job!
I really love that the first nurse which is going to be interview, after all that crap, is like "screw this job, I'm not going to work here". Almost like the protagonist in Barbarian, which is not oblivion of the danger.
As a fencer I can confirm we do shoot each other with crossbows
It’s strange how this movie simultaneously made me feel bad for and angry at Esther
whenever i see dead meat posted a video, i cant help watch and enjoy how wholesome you make horror movies:))
though probably a coincidence, the movie seems to parallel the case of nicholas barclay. like esther, he went missing and a few years later, was replaced by a con artist, Frédéric Bourdin, who was feigning as the child. like leena, bourdin was caught, but a theory remains that his older brother who was a heavy drug user, or someone else in the family, either intentionally or unwittingly killed nicholas, then accepted bourdin as him to allay suspicions. very eerie if unintentional.
The way, "Esther, single again..." had me CACKLING.
I’m glad you kill counted the prequel too. Isabelle did amazing with her role again. I’m glad that had her reprise her role as Esther even though she had grown since then.
Such a clever prequel! Acting was great! Furhman and Stiles were top notch! When I first heard about this, I never thought it would work ; but man, what a ride from start to finish!
It’s great that you added that how they got made line in the intro, it’s good to let people know it’s not all about kills anymore, it’s about how these talented people made the movies we watch
I'm impress how they relied on handmade effects, makeup, body doubles and amazing time with their scenes here then on CGI. Some filmmakers have objected to using CGI for its take away something in the production. Also it takes me back to how filmmaking started, where you use your creativity more to created movies.
Despite it being over a decade later, they did pretty well with the editing to make Isabelle look like a child.
HER ROYAL RUMBLE ENTRANCE MUSIC WHATTTTTTTTTTT LOLLLLLLLL 9:12
Having First Kill as the first kill count is genius, James
James, you need to do Brandon Lee’s “The Crow” I know it’s not exactly a horror film it’s more of a thriller but still an excellent film with excellent kills.
James hopping off the chair gave me a hardy chuckle 😂 20:51
18:37 although, from my research, i did learnt something pretty interesting: Since fencing stemmed from war and duels of death, it is natural for people to assume there is danger involved. However, in the 121 years of modern Olympic-style fencing, there have only been eight instances of death, the most notable of which was Soviet fencer Vladimir Viktorovich Smirnov.
10:45 😂god that line had me cackling. Also i absolutely loved this episode, couldn't think of a better kill count for the new year

It’s really cool to see Isabelle can still mail this character so well after all these years after the first one came out
Esther went from main antagonist to main protagonist. WE LOVE TO SEE IT.
As excited as i am to see a possible third orphan movie, I'm just confused on what they'd do.
Are we going even further back, to the first family she killed? Or are they gonna say she survived the events of the original film?

This was an amazing prequel and the fact the same actress came back for the same role is amazing
This was probably the biggest surprise of the decade as far as horror movies go. Sequels more than ten years after never tend to go well, and yet here is this movie, being legitimately good.

Whats crazy is you end up hating the mom and brother because you realize they covered up an actual child’s murder, so in some way you’re rooting for Lena to kill them lol
