How Far Do You Need To Ride To Burn Off The Beers? 🍻

- We've all experienced it - that moment of regret after indulging in a few too many beers the night before. But fear not! Rich Payne has crunched the numbers to determine the calorie content of a pint of beer/cider and calculate the time that's required to burn them off. Although you don't have to burn all the calories you consume, Rich was interested to see how far you would have to ride to burn off those pints.

What were the most calories you've burnt 🔥 in one ride? How far did you ride?
Let us know in the comments! 👇
346
Like 1500 cal burned in 21 miles and 3100 ft elevation gained. My usual long Saturday trail ride. According to my Garmin fenix 7
I think your garmin only shows the power you pedal, so when it shows 815 cal. have you actually burned 1018 cal. (815+25% heat) and at the same time you must remember that additionlly 25% of the what you consume goes to digestion (only approx. 75% is usable energy), so in reality you have burned around 400 cal. more than taken in
10:43 so if you removed your chain and rode 5km downhill the Garmin will say zero calories burnt right? These garmins are for roadbikes, strata data is still 100x more valuable
2902 calories last week on a 4hour 35 ebike ride. Eco for cardio. Then emtb for fun. Then eco for cardio to end
GCN works off a Big Mac and GMBN does alcohol. On point 😂
Lots of beer necessitates lots of cycling- surely the definition of a win win situation. Good that you did the calibration on my local routes. Since I usually do two or three times that, I need to seriously increase my drinking!
Looks like thirsty work, time for a refreshment! 🍺
This was an excellent watch. These are questions I've often considered, and Rich layer out the clear details in a real-life way and avoided being to static/scientific. Really helpful!
7941 calories burned, that means you could have 37 pints of cider before hand and be fine. 😅
rip liver
Average woman /
Average man:
Those are people who might walk to the shop and sit around all day, maybe do some jobs around the house.
If you’re a sports person, that goes out of the window. You need calories.
Relative energy deficiency in sport (REDS) is something you should probably mention.
Great video Rich! Good approach to how far you have to go to burn off a fun night out.
Calories burned technology just isn't there yet. At best it's a rough guide. Eat more, do more hasn't changed. Go faster in the cold, burns more, more quickly is helpful. Best of all enjoy all things in balance and moderation.
The co2 you exhale was fat, until Garmin measures co2 its just guessing how much you fat you burnt. Breathe more and you'll lose more weight
By accurately knowing your exertion you can easily calculate an approximate calories burnt value alongside HR data and body metrics (height, weight etc). It's not entirely accurate but it is much closer to true than using HR and body dimensions alone. I think power data can predict with a 10% margin whereas without it it can be as much as 40% off.
That GMBN Bottle opener is 🔥🔥🔥
😅👊
It's about 50 calories per mile on a steady flat run for me. I did burn around 3000 calories going up and down Helvellyn though
Thanks!
Next, can we do 815 calories of trail mix?
K, so I also lost a lot of weight bicycling and drinking beers, it motivates you to ride and if you pace your drinking and riding, it's like a carbo-protein drink with a lil buzz.
I don't drink, but I ride a lot. I love it because it allows me to eat so much - not all of it good mind, chocolate, sweets etc, but it leave more room for good nutrition as well.
Another point is understanding when you take calories in makes a big difference in how you burn them. Taking 815 of them in and promptly falling asleep will not burn any of them and they will be converted to fat - to burn that off a long zone 2 ride is in order. However if you take those extra calories in when doing lots of exercise all the sugar's etc will be burnt off and provide energy for a more intense workout. The take away is that if you do want to drink, drink on the bike - it's a good way to stay fit and healthy. Of course I'm discounting all the errors of judgment you will make when cycling drunk! So please, don't drink and bike.
Great video to understand the impact of alcohol on fitness and weight.
Does the setup with a power meter do anything to take into account calorie burn on descents as well? Throwing the bike around must consume some too?
Finally some useful information 😅
Is it just me or did anyone else want to take that fullface helmet off the log burner? Maybe that is another video - how many drinks does it take to melt your helmet! Fantastic work Rich, loved it 😃
Been teetotal for 4 years now. I am impressed by non alcoholic alternatives. Many bottles of N/A beer are around 50 calories or less. Alcohol itself is very calorific.
What I would really like to know is how good the estimates of various apps or services like Strava are when giving them different kinds of sensor data. I am a beginner for example record my rides GPS only, with no sensors at all.
Would power be flawed as well for calories burned? For example, the energy burned pumping down a technical downhill wouldn’t be captured in power output. Or, am I thinking about it wrong?
It's an interesting think to discuss... Seeing how much we have to ride to burn energy. The amount of variables that go into each time you go on the bike are massive. From the weather conditions to HR and cardiovascular tolerance, Strength in the legs to the terrain in where you ride. In my case I always ride about 20 or so Kms every ride i do and I would burn roughly about 1000 calories each time.
Worth every watt 🍻
Toured in the Lake District last November. Half-pint at lunchtime, one or two with the evening meal. Traveled light, overnight stays in B&Bs. Not the biggest days, 30 to 50miles. Lost about 5kgs and I wasn’t exactly carrying a lot of timber setting out!
Touring, the thinking man’s base-miles race training.
Sounds like a great trip!
such a beautiful tittle,
Many greetings from your German beer friends😂😝
Even with a power meter, calories burned is probably still an estimate at best. The only accurate measure in this scenario is potential energy of the beer (1kcal=1.3 w-hr) to average-watts for number of hours which of course doesn’t consider the extensive inefficiencies at play.
If you wanted to truly measure caloric burn you’d have to do this in a controlled room on a trainer measuring how much you’ve changed the rooms temperature. Unsurprisingly called a calorimetry room.
I wanna know how long and how many DH tracks u need for to burn that much :) (with uplift ofc)
10:13 Total ASScent 😂
I'm glad to see the focus on health and fitness. Besides being empty calories it screws up your metabolism for 8-16 hours while your body puts total focus on burning the alcohol off as fuel instead of carbs and fats. I still enjoy a Guinness and a Whisky on a Friday night though, my reward for being in the gym everyday. Moderation is the key. 🙂
Yeah, I found it messed with my sleep which ruined my recovery. Seems stupid to watch what we eat and to exercise routinely to throw it away on alcohol. Nowadays I only drink a celebratory whisky once a year with friends when we do our annual backpacking trip.
No it takes an hour and some change for the liver to metabolize one serving of alcohol. However during that time burning fat for fuel stops.
Alcohol will mess up your sleep..but only because of the sugar. If you are a gel.pack.pack an hour before bed yes you going to have trouble sleeping
@@ybh9776 I misquoted the article I had read, meant fat burning not metabolism. Here is the exact quote: "Alcohol can shut down fat burning for up to 12 to 36 hours depending on the individual and the dose. "
@@JeffMTBinVA it's the same thing you stop burning fat because the liver is busy metabolizing the alcohol. Again roughly one serving per hour. So more than I drink in one hour then there is alcohol in the blood steam...So 6 servings in 2 hours...you're in the tank for 4 hours...after 6 hours, again roughly, the alcohol is metabolized and the liver then goes back to normal function
No this is real pertinent consumer advice 😂🎉
I'm curious how the heartrate calculated calories burned on downhill compares to the power meter calculated calories burned
Hi, I think I burned more calories because when riding mtb you constantly change your position while balancing the bike and it was cold. When it's cold, you consume more calories.
What if you ride in calories deficit and drink beer to compensate? 🤔
Do one between men and women with the difference of mountain biking of how the body works and calories burnt for males and females around the same age and weight - Who's body is it harder on?
mid ride beer for quick carbs and extra courage, post ride beers for rehydration and recovery, plus beer builds bone density. just eat less junk.
This is, give or take 100KCals the result I get riding an average 170 - 180 watts estimated by Strava, so it's in the ball park. Obviously things like headwinds, mud, roots and uneven surfaces make a difference on effort V speed, but it's good to have a number in mind if you're trying to burn off Christmas still, or refuel on long XC rides.
Same here, Strava, no sensors. Same trails in winter with leaves and mud feel much harder, making me slower, so Strava estimate is lower, despite being way more exhausted after the ride.
I feel like you need to reassess, wet riding is awesome!!!
No wrong question! Its "how many beers would i need to compensate my mtb ride?"
I’m concerned about that full face helmet on the log burning stove - surely a bad combination unless you have an asbestos sheet between em 😮
I burn about 800 to 900 calories riding rollers for a hour. And it is mind numbing to say the least. I have about 1-4 drinks per week as one drink usually knocks me for a loop especially if I have not eaten at least 1500 calories of good food before having a drink. And I ride like crap the day after having any any drinks the night before.
That mean I could have had 4 more beers yesterday…. 😢
About right my garman gives me about the same cals
I wanna know what are those pants! getting rly tired of licra
Probably gmbn trail pants
@@woduk can we buy those?
Running burns more for me because it is a more consistent effort level. Even down hill requires lots of effort.
I had 6 yesterday...It`s minus 4 C in Lodz Poland,20cm of snow but I`m going!!!I`ve put on 2.5kilos of clothes and here we go.😉
less booze more ride guys
Why would you use watts to calculate calories? It's not taking into account the physicality of descending.
Where are these trails?
Rich was riding in the Forest Of Dean in this video, near the cycle centre!
It's too sad that our body doesn't really work like that - easy in and out calculation, boom. If you invoked an insulin response before you went out you wouldn't have an ounce of fat out of your storage burnt because the insulin response also shuts down all the fat storage access paths for the time of the spike (actually i don't know for how long exactly).
Cheers to your important message here though, everybody keep tabs on your diet and sugar/carbs = bad/keep as low as you can. Also, get out and ride. (I do salute you for constantly looking like a boar that sped through the mud all day, fancy a video on MTB clothing for bad weather and how to handle all the dirt?)
Hello! I have a feeling you have mixed Kilo calories (kcal) - consumed; with calories (cal) burned with cycling. The difference is 1000 to 1...😅
I think you are making the same mistake that GCN did when they did this.
Your food calories is measured in Kcal (calories x 1000). Your work is measured in cal.
1 kcal is equal to 1000 cal.
Your food consumed would actually be 815,000 cal (equal to 815 Kcal).
You have to ride 1000x farther when you equalize the units in your calculation.
Well, no. This has been factored in the computations. 1 kJoule of mechanical work measured by the pedals corresponds to roughly 1kCal burnt by the metabolism. There is a factor 4 (roughly) between joule and calories by it is cancelled out by the efficiency of 25% of our own metabolism (meaning that for each joule of work put into the pedal, the body actually burns 4).
What was the cocktail?
A snakebite!😂
The calculators way underestimate the calories burned mountain biking.
How many calories do I burn sitting on the chairlift? 🙂
.. actually is 4.184 times less and you did not subtract the power consumption by sitting one hour on the couch..
Lol 😅 I think I might be an alcoholic. 6 tallboys and 6 twisted teas is a normal night
Shoutout to anyone who stood up to alcohol and quit for a better life. Keep going, you’ve got this. Alcohol is far too popularized and acceptable, especially in the riding community and it’s killing so many people. Whoever you are, keep going. It gets better. From experience.
easy...stay away from alcohol and your ride and fitness get better :)
Keep in mind you burn approximately 38 calories per hour while sleeping that's 304 calories burnt off in 8 hours
Sooooo, you want/need to burn off lots of calories. Why are you using a really posh, well maintained, mountain bike? Surely, an old, heavy as lead, steel framed bike, with Sturmey Archer gears, with hubs full of 100 year-old grease would burn more calories?
That would burn of the calories but you probably wouldn't get as far 👎
December 23,2022 i got beaten down by a nasty pancreatitis attack that landed me in 3 hospitals in 3 states over a total of 28days with a 9 day break in-between caused by 20yrs of tasty adult beverages. Sadly, i am no longer able to drink tasty adult beverages 😢. Thankfully The last beer i ever had was a yuen and not, well, you know... 😅.. i will say with the forced diet change ive lost upwards of 70lbs (i was 200) and I've never biked harder, faster and longer in my life since my teenage years!!(42 now) BUT!! I will never advocate for anti drinking! All i ask is that you drink one for me!~Shwinn8, MTBR
What about 18 pints
That'll be a lot of riding! And with a hangover I imagine 👀
makes me glad i swapped the fermented nonsense for 420 LOL
fair
Can't afford beers AND biking!
Leave all the tech and calorie counting at home and just enjoy riding your bike.
It's not only about calories. It's also: affected sleep quality and recovery. Not even mentioning killed thousands of brain cells... Having said that, one day I realized this is not fun anymore and don't drink unless I really have to. Cheers👍👍👍
the only time you HAVE TO drink, is when you're kidnapped and they force you to drink alcohol. Every other case, just say no.
Even worse, the amount of micro biome flora in the upper and lower intestines that gets destroyed. Some of which are difficult to replenish without eating or drinking fermented foods and drinks. Mainly L. Reiteri, L. Gasseri, and other delicate strains. You will develop SIBO or SIFO that can lead to a whole slew of serious health issues.
You guys have vindicated my decision to quit alcahol and focus solely on my riding and marijuana
@@Indicasativa55 At least one of these will give you a lot of satisfaction 😂😂
You burn the calories of but not the internal damage
I’ve been sober for over 3 years Yeha Thanks to getting back into cycling and finding GMBN ✌️
That's great to hear! Happy trails 🤘What bike are you currently riding?
If this was true I could just ride off the cupcakes. It’s more like cornering. Lotta ins and outs. Lotta facets.
Might get shot down in this channel, but I'd like to see you do the same ride on an e-mtb and compare the results.
Steve Jones is doing lot's of eMTB tests over on the EMBN channel! Here's an interesting one 👉 czcams.com/video/On11pwhHCcQ/video.html
Ironic I watch this after getting back from a quick 90 minute ride to/from and on my local trails - 730cals burnt.
Did you also have a heavy night? 🍻
@@gmbn unfortunately not, but at least I could bank the credits!
That's one way to look at it 🤔
Switch to whiskey........... easy!
Energy drinks are even worse. I used to have lucazade sport until I found out it had 8 tea spoons of sugar.
8's not too bad compared to some 😬
You will burn calories even when you aren't pedalling because you still have to move around and control the bike... If you were riding a downhill track you would still burn a fair amount even if you didn't pedal at all... Now clearly you will burn more when you are putting the power through the pedals but it's certainly not all from just pedalling.
Who else is drinking a beer while watching this?!
Nice video but at 2:40 that equation is just completely wrong, energy is measured in Joules and time is seconds not hours.
Speaking of burning, is that helmet in the background atop a fireplace/heater?
We're just keeping it warm, ready for the next ride 👀🔥
If you drink until you throw up 🤔
I mean in reality; it doesn't really matter unless you are sponsored athlete competing.
Shhh they're selling garmins and orbeas this year. Anytime you see these 2 this year just enjoy the scenery and stay skeptical
Oh she puddley…. 😂😂😂
I don’t need to ride anywhere to burn off the beers as I don’t drink any! 👍🤙
just skip dinner problem solved ;)
7 pints? A week? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I smoke weed whilst I'm out mtbing. It's really fun and it's nice to stop at gorgeous scenery whilst smoking then carrying on.
I smoke after a ride, because smoking before a ride affects the ride itself. I mean I easily could ride trails I know for years, but if I want to go on techy trails I'd smoke afterwards as a reward. And nobody wants a heavy indica buzz while riding, well some guys might...cheers! Ride on...
@sickheadsumaddy5231 that makes sense man. I usually will only smoke on slow Cross Country trails if we're out for a whole day. If I'm doing tech stuff then yes leave it until the end else it'll be a struggle haha ✌️
"Weed" has about 17 different mind / body altering chemicals so you are rolling the dice unless you have a dispensary. Most people can comprehend getting high vs getting stoned. Some bud is hyperfocus / sleepy / hunger / zone out / paranoid/ hyper
@@doubleL_S Weed is like a mood enhancer in my opinion. After a good ride or some trail scouting it makes me feel good about what I've done and thats why I simply love it. On the other hand I went scouting while high and I got lost, these damn forests nowadays nearly all look the same! xD
@@janeblogs324 It's mainly sativa for the head, indica for the body and hybrids for a mix in between. But honestly, I would love to have a dispensary, but regarding laws where I live, I choose to become my own farm and my own dispensary, so I know exactly what kind of herb I'm smoking.
you can burn of the calories , but you cant burn of the liver damage , so cut down
Alcohol kills your recovery. The whole ride goes down the drain. You shouldn't drink at all. There's nothing good in alcohol
Smoke Weed, eat lots of good food, train hard and ride like a madman. No beer needed...
This guy gets it.
@@dennispikephotography This guy seems like a likeminded gentleman. Big up yourself!

Cheers to that!
Who's the numpty who left their helmet on the wood burning stove?
There's always one. The stove is fake.
Lol I drink 24 tall boys a day have for 30 plus years You do not have to ride any where to loose weight .
I have to ride zero to burn off the beers. Because I don't drink. Alcohol is poison. And people are infuriatingly annoying when drunk.
Drinking culture is weird. I judge all of you for your parking lot beers.
I think some people nees time for this realisation. Other never get this conclusion. And there is nothing worse than someone preaching this concept... But I'm 100% with you 👍👍👍
First to watch the video
I am at a loss to see why anyone would make this video. Calories are calories no matter where they come from. And there is lots of info on rates that cycling burn up calories. Make a video about something useful.
Gmbn is really running out of ideas for videos. This one is just simple, how long does one have to ride to burn off the amount of calories of a beer. It can be answered in one sentence
All this did was make me unsubscribe from the channel. 😂❤
