Crashing 🥹
That mountainbiking (fireroads, trails, everything) is illegal in general where I life (Austria). Every time riding you have to be scared to get caught by someone and sued. And when that happens, that can cost you up so several 1000€! That's by far the worst when it comes to Mountainbiking in my opinion. You should make an episode about this one time...
The worst thing about being a mountain biker is having to work every day and not being out there on your bike
Amen! Having to watch CZcams videos in the office of people outside riding their MTB. One of life’s many injustices!
The worst thing about being a mountain biker...is the blank stare when you say hi to people on the trail.
xc riders
Ha ha ha! 😂
some are friendly some aren't
no one ever acknowledges anyone else in the car park. but out on the trails it's different
I’ve only ever been met with a blank stare when I’ve talked to cyclists wearing spandex. Maybe the tight fabric constricts their personalities?
Too funny about the eBike and the fitness of a buddy!!
I hike and bike the local trails. Slowing down and warning hikers is done by most of us. But, there's always someone who is riding too fast near hikers and most don't announce themselves.
Winter is my favorite season where I live...no bugs, no excessive brush, no oppressive heat, firm ground. Good to go, as long as the snow stays minimal.
It's a very different story here in the UK, because of how wet it is most of the trails get very blown out! Not fun for the trail builders 👎
Here is sunny Qld Australia our winter is amazing. We average only 4-5 days of light showers per month in winter and temps are 21-23c max and 10-12c minimum.
Even winter mornings are nice. Summer is straight death. Constant 30-34c and roughly every other day is rain.
Sounds like the dream! 🤘🔥
Currently, none of my riding buddies are injured, disabled, or elderly. Mostly middle aged, able bodied, and love to pedal. No electric motorized cycles to worry about.
All it takes is one them to make the change!
@@gmbnWe would tar and feather and disown him!
Give it a few years to plug-in 😂
That’s why you live in California. Trails open year round for most part.
FYI boys, trails don’t close for winter in Michigan USA. Snow and ice are where it’s at
I live in America, and I ride all winter and have never seen a trail closed because due to winter
I was curious about this too. No where I have lived has had winter closures except for the bike parks that double as ski lifts.
Guess it depends where your at. I've seldom seen the trails officially closed, but certainly un-officially by peer pressure not to rut out the trails when muddy.
Some trails here close. Usually the ones in town, to protect from wear. Most of the trails that are closed are closed because you can’t get to them because they’re buried under snow
Trails “close” due to being buried in multiple feet of snow in many parts of North America
There are a few trails in Vermont that are closed for Deer bedding and a pause for hunting season. But.. We have rad trails that are groomed fat bike riding!
Not all trails close in North America..Fat Biking in snow on groomed trails is a thing! It is sooo much fun! GMBN should do a video on fat biking in negative temps in snow! :)
We'd love to! We've been chatting about something like this potentially in a Nordic country for ages
The double act, just gets better 😂😂
Iam from Germany and weather here is similar to that of the U.K. So worst. We ride all season, mud, rain etc. Last week we rode on snow and ice and it was quite fun too. I clean up evetything with muc off and everything looks later brand new. BTW me and my mate all ride nowadays e-bike 😅. Thankyou Rich and Blake. GMBN is gr8t and i been watching all you videos. Thx.
I'm about to go winter riding. The mud, the mud, it will be everywhere
Do you enjoy riding in the mud?
Great video! The satire is much appreciated!
Glad you enjoyed it
The worst part of MTB is when it rains or it's too cold. Getting the ride out of the way early in the morning isn't possible if the weather isn't right.
The constantly changing "standards". Especially when its marginal gains.
And a dropper post isnt absolutely necessary to mtb. 😅
We do ride in the winter if it is below 32 degrees Fahrenheit and the trails are frozen. Me and the Specialized Fatboy
Oh, and the weather we get on the west coast of Canada here, its pretty mucky, high humidity, and when we get snow its pretty rough to ride in, but the snow lasts such a short time at least where I am (Vancouver Island) doesnt last long enough to warrant studded tires. Only crap thing about this weather is washing the bike after every ride kinda sucks, especially without a garage or proper area, I got a cheap amazon bike repair stand thing to put in the grass to hold the bike for a spray off and do chain and cog brushing, but when I get home from a ride its often getting dark and very cold, and our humidity makes 0 Celsius feel way colder than it is, especially when your sweaty from the ride and you stop moving.
Other than my grip about weather and XC riders racing on non race days on multi use blue trails, not much else to complain about, my local shop maintains my bike for the most part with free tuneups for the life of the bike or whatever cause I bought the bike there, havent even gotten a flat yet and I'm a diehard tube user. Tubes worked great during my BMX years, I dont see much need to change to tubeless, theres too much maintenance and extra stuff to buy to do tubeless, and too much risk of not being able to properly reinflate on the trail if it blows out or something. As for lower pressures, I'm used to harder PSI like 100psi for BMX, if my tires slipout on trails I just hop off my bike and carry it till I find somewhere good to get back on lol, I'm not in any hurry when I ride trails, I bumble, for hours.
Best thing about the worst thing of not being able to ride the local often clay-based trails during winter in the San Francisco Bay Area is that mtbers would show up to ride on the excellent rocky trails of Mt. Tamalpais in Marin County. Could ride in a downpour there...with lots of friends!
I would say, being exposed to injuries is one of the worst things abount MTB. Guys, have you ever thought about doing a video about MTB injuries? is there mtb life after surgeries? I will have a lumber surgery in the next months and I am scared! I am not sure if I will be able to ride again. I love your channel! greetings from Mexico.
Really nailed it with this. Fat biking here in Canada is ok, but its sure no summer (even when we do DH trails on them, slippery good time) my good friend got an Ebike last year and I've really struggled to get over it, maybe their is a common psychological related to this I can overcome? Its a similar condition to, your best buddy is fitter then you, or you want to ride with people who are WAY fitter then you, perhaps? not really.
We feel you... Nothing compares to those nice weather, short sleeve hero dirt days!
I enjoy winter riding the most when it’s totally frozen, but it makes the suspension slow as molasses. I never noticed on my hardtail, but it’s very obvious on my full suspension trail bike. I guess I’ll have to run different oil in it during winter
Those sniper dog eggs hidden under the leaves this time of year... the on / off ming of squashed turd as your wheel rotates then having to pick it out of the tread with a stick
After watching this clip, you would have put many people off mtb 😂
Injuries ain't no fun. The number of times i played the role of superman, flying off my bike, would qualify me to be a stuntman now 😂😂😂. I still haven't fully recovered from an elbow injury from last year! This is the reason why mtb companies are failing, lol. Not many people are foolish enough to throw themselves off a cliff.
Bike park trails are closed here in winter but at the local public trails a lot of people just ride fat tire bikes. Or run studded tires.
It sounds like fat bikes are where its at in Canada! 🤘
Please come to Canada in winter and try some fatbiking on snow covered trails!
The worst thing? Getting gritty mud inside my shorts, gnarly!
Worst thing is when the rains stop and trails are wrecked and full of ruts thanks to all the people that rode when they were wet.
is it me, or has the price gap between entry bike and actual top tier bikes gone up significantly in the past 10 years or so? Heck, some new bikes are valued at more than a used car price!
Winter and the cost of everything MTB related. I'm going to say that's a tie.
Bots... Bots everywhere
Just remember to report them when you see em
I’m only 19 and a hardcore hardtail rider, but more recently my knees have been really aching, I always stretch before and aft a session. Any ideas?
Hardtails aren't kind on the knees! If it's causing you real discomfort it might be good to talk to a physiotherapist or sports therapist 🤘
The worst is people racing on non race days on normal public multi use trails. Nothing worse than going at a moderate speed on flat and uphill non downhill trails and some XC lycra clad roadie convert comes speeding past out of nowhere, they are almost more annoying than E bikes. If your not racing, chill out and enjoy the scenery, most other people on the trails are trying to just enjoy it, not improve their time, if anything I go slower to just soak it all up. If your training for a race, get an indoor bike or trainer thingy, or go ride the actual racing trails, but above all, slow down when you approach other riders or walkers, especially on mixed trails where theres walkers. If that ruins your racing regiment too bad, whizzing past people at 30kmh is dangerous and really annoying, I'm not super easily startled but when another rider comes rushing towards me from either direction at unreasonable speeds its always concerning.
E bikes can be guilty of this too, as they travel way faster anyways, and I've often seen them doing close to 30kmh on an uphill with pedestrians jumping out of the way, mind you alot of Ebikers have fiddled with their bikes to get higher speeds and some can even add on a throttle to their pedal assist, ive seen the videos, people mod them so they literally violate the class system implemented for Ebikes, adding throttles to pedal assist changes the classification of the bike and basically makes them into a motorized vehicle, in which case they can go ride with the motorbikes on their trails that we arent aloud on. I'm all for Ebikes to assist people, especially the elderly riders that just want to explore at a leisurely pace thats awesome, but people modding them to have way more speed (and obviously burn out their batteries faster) and have power when not pedaling, they need to be forced onto different trails, no one is riding motocross on public trails either, theres specific trails for that. Ebikes are great for climbing and exploring, although I definitely wouldnt want to wrangle that extra weight on the downhill, so it makes sense to just stick with an acoustic bike and deal with the climbs, at least for me personally.
good points made mate. my local singletracks are mulit-use for hikers and bikers, and are quite tight and narrow with lots of brush and limited visibility. It's frustrating when i have to ride into the trees just to avoid a collision because another rider comes flying through with little to no concern of who or what may be around the next bend
Winter & snow… Eeew!
Can’t ride for 3 months and the anticipation makes you spend money on all sorts of stuff for your bike. 🙄
Fat bike is a thing of beauty,
They re closed, so that you dont ruin them and make it harder to repair them....
OK, not the absolute worse thing but one arguably unfortunate thing about mountain biking is that the trees sometimes block GPS signals and a really hard effort on a segment isn't recorded. Trees can cause GPS drift, dropped tracking, blah, blah. Segment competition is fun and poor GPS signals reduce some of the validity of the times.
Winter is when you hang up the bike and break out the board/skis - I see no issue here…
Should have left the dork disc on!
Grumpy walkers shouting you are going too fast when give them a huge amount of space. I always do my best to be considerate to other trail users but there are a few people out there that can't be pleased 😅 I think they just can't comprehend the amount of grip and braking power in a modern mtb so think you are out of control.
For me, literally dog walkers everywhere round were i ride. I think pretty much everyone you see has one or more off a leash. I do not think anyone goes for a walk without a dog these days - well, more like taking it for a shit and a piss and throw the dog bag in the bushes on the way back.
Your mate gets an e-bike ... you mean , your EX MATE .... never again ride with him. No worries with the winter here in Portugal , just a few puddles to get around :)
Winter; Scandinavia, Russia "-20 , nice dry snow !"
Winter riding when you live in a sub-arctic climate zone and get -30 degrees during the winter that's when biking sucks
I bike and hike tons of trails. So many bikers slow down but some act like they are in a race and fly past people, kids, dogs within inches. I yell at those assholes and more. Show respect
marketing and people believing they need the latest and new gear all the time. stop telling me your drivetrain has worn out after 2 years of riding once ever 5 weeks.
I don't have a close friend...
Hi just out of curiosity have you ever seriously hurt yourself while mountain biking.
Hi Sam, pretty much everyone who works here has had a nasty crash resulting in an injury at some point! Part of the game, and too many to list 😅
Can you recommend a half decent not too expensive pedal for my giant talon.
All the guys here are riding Crank Brothers pedals and they love them! The Stamp 1s are very affordable 🤘
I used to race, but now everyone that is behind you yells "on your left" and they expect you to pull over and let them pass IN A RACE!
It depends on the style of race and how much room is on the track, but that is the done thing. If people get caught, they tend to allow space to let the faster rider behind to pass, similar to being lapped on a car racetrack
in the instances im talking about these are not faster riders, they just expect you to move over.@@gmbn
@@mattnejmanowski631 I always let them by and ride their wheel till they blow. Irrational exuberance from others provides a lot of free watts for me.
"winter"
Someone blasting music while riding. Usually overly load and it sucks
When your mate wont't get an eBike
Waiting for your mate because he hasn't got an eBike
Listening to your mate talk about his old tech on his non-eBike
Being slower than your mate once he gets an eBike
We didn't think about that side of the argument 😂
It's been so muddy and wet for so long that I have fallen in love with it this winter. Bring on mud and hero dirt.
Worst thing about mtb is the people riding the historic bikes that ruin the uphills.
people who grumble at me for gettin lost n havin t back track along trails.. grow up lads! theres worse things out there..!
One more thing: Mountainbiking can be very expencive
A dislike to be sure. On the flip side though modern bikes really do crush the capabilities of the past. Dirt bikes not as much, you can ride a YZ250 from 2006 and be just as good as your friend on a brand new one. If I go back to a bike from 2006 it feels like a death trap I am about to launch over the bars on.
everyone else switching to e-bikes 😞
Horse land minds in the middle of the trail
chat its summer for me?!
Dealing with annoying hiking Karen's and unleashed or leashed dogs and their clueless owners.
If my friend showed up to a group ride with an e-bike, I would have one fewer friend.
Why? If you're all friends riding together what's the problem?
Enjoy the solo riding.
Someday all your friends will show up for a group ride on e-bikes! Try one once and you’ll be hooked.
You need to join the Middle-aged Men on Ebike brigade! ...I think in the future the majority will be on them tbh. I think the none mobility bikes will be for the hardcore diehard mountain bikers.
You dont seem t hold much value in ur friendships... with solid friends, one forgives their misdemeanors..
A mate who gets an ebike is not your mate .
🫡
Seems to be primarily on the West Coast of the US *cough* here in California California *cough* where the trails are closed when the deer pee too much. But the worst, coming from someone who teaches mountain bike skills training workshops, is when-despite countless sessions leading up to and including real TRAIL RIDES-that your student STILL is crashing because they are hitting the brakes (instead of letting the bike do what it is designed to). “Oh, please do not bite the hands that feeds- the voice of reason that is instructing you how to NOT crash!” 😂
The ridiculous markups from the manufacturers on their overpriced bikes, components and gear?
Come to Canada. Get a fat bike. It is the most fun ever.
I just gave up and got an e mtb to match my boys lol
If your mate is fitter, get an EMTB. Solution found.
But what if your fitter mate also gets an eBike? 🤔
@@gmbn take their speed sensor off.
😂
mud? if you put your bike in those conditions...it was your decision. Just for fun, complain about mud to a CX'r. Anyone under 70 and not disabled riding on an e-bike is a wanker. Mech's stink but not knowing how to set a lower limit isn't a mech...it's just careless.
where are you riding that the trails are closed in the winter , FAT BIKE
North American fat biking on the snow is some of the best times you'll ever have on a bike. ❄️🚵♀️
Sounds super cool! sgotta beat winter mud anyroad...
E biking is not real mountain biking, and you're still not fast!
It’s called motor cycling on mountain bike trails.
