Blake Tries Unicycling Off Road For The First Time

- Blake Samson has traded his life on two wheels for something far simpler.. a Unicycle! Surely one wheel is easier to manage than two, right? Just like learning to wheelie, practice makes perfect, but Blake doesn't have long to practice. We've given him the morning to learn how to ride a Unicycle before he takes it to the trail. Will Blake be able to do it, or will he end up looking like a clown? 🤡

What is the weirdest bike you've ever ridden? Let us know in the comments below! 👇
An 'impossible' wheel. (Also known as the BC Wheel). And I have tired it off-road. very dfficult
I'm a boring person the two weirdest things I've ridden are a recumbent bike and a SnoGo. The snow go is incredible fun but it felt sketchy all the way down 😅
Been riding a unicycle since I was 12 I am now 60. Good for you Blake!
My “Swing King” swing bike where the back and front steer independently. It’s great watching Neds try to nick it from outside the cafe. They end up on the floor trying to explain how they got there to me and my friends….and the nice PCSO who patrols the area😂
My dad built a 3 person tandem for myself, my brother and my sister to go to school on in the early 80's.
Next up.... Blake learns to ride a unicycle CLIPPED IN!! 😂😂
Now this could be fun!
With a suspension seat post...
Done this in one of my videos. It helps in a way as most unpredicted dismounts are caused by your foot slipping off the pedal and not a loss of ballance
@@UniMart_Martin this, while it sounds counter intuitive, makes sense.
LOL
Blake might be the single best addition to the channel ever. I think he is the only one brave and "stupid" enough to try ANYTHING. This, combined with this natural fun personality is just a perfect winning combo!
More "stupid" ideas please!!!
What would you like to see him try next?!
That's cruel... anyway Rome wasn't built in a day maybe he could go up against a professional unicycle rider 🤔@@gmbn

Don't play through speakers with your children around
Bwahahahahahahaha!
Ed Pratt - the guy that unicycled around the world is solely responsible for inspiring me to learn unicycling. And I love it. When I tell people I have 3.5 bikes it’s because one of them is my unicycle 😁.
Ed is ace! Our mates on GCN spoke with him before! czcams.com/video/u5X979R-JTE/video.htmlsi=dNJQA29CL29P2HU_
@@gmbn It was that video that started it all for me. I saw it, went straight from that to looking him up, then subscribing to his channel, binge watching a ton of his videos and then onto buying my first unicycle. Now I can be found with my one wheel on the trails.
I have like 6 bikes...but 6 of them are unicycles. if I did my 1/2 math correctly.
Blake learning unicycling is equivalent to a hacker finding a password by trying out every single possibility. 😂 Love it
@@The_1ntern3t it is pretty much the standard method for learning all skills on a unicycle 😆
Nice try - congrats 🎉🎉🎉
A few tips:
1. For stability, use muscles of your bum, abs and hips at the same time.
2. Try correcting your balance without waving your arms, but with twisting and shifting your back spine, so moving your rib cage to different directions than the lower half of your torso to maintain balance.
3. If it gets rough, mountain unicycling is pedalling STOOD UP. Sitting ist only for smooth surfaces.
4. The saddle handle is for holding with one hand at all times when offroad. It is used to pull in situations, where you need more pedalling power than your body weight alone can generate.
Strongly forced pedalling down while simultaneously pulling at the handle to maximise the leg power.
This way you can get up waaay steeper hills than without pulling the handle.
5. Attack body position offroad means your chest leads, the bum and saddle are hold a bit backwards:
This way your torso and the longest leg on the downstroke NEVER are in one vertical line - there always needs to be a slight angle in your hips, so your chest is leading your feet, the bum follows behind.
What it means:
The unicyle itself is leant backwards, which provides much better bump eating capabilities.
Keep it up!🎉
You're playing chess, he's trying to learn Ludo. I would start by trying to ride 100 meters down a street without falling off before attacking a trail.
@@irfuel Of course - but understanding early, which muscle groups and torso twistings can help, progress can be faster than just trial and error until figuring out yourself. I learned wobbly riding in a few days when I was 8 years old, but had a unicycle trainer at age 15 in a teen circus. Correct teaching from him got me to riding stood up, riding backwards, way better cornering, jumping, pirouetting and getting onto the unicycle in 3 different ways in a few weeks, which I still am very grateful for because these techniques built the foundation for riding off road.
Some serious tips here! Blake could end up going pro!
You gotta watch some Kris Holm footage from New World Disorder.
Its really easy once you learn these tips. These are exactly what i got taught when learning to ride them by some of the best in england, i eventually learnt to do trails riding on them and doing jumps the lot! Really made me look into buying another one
2:47 That slow mo crash montage set to the melancholy piano was a piece of editing genius!
Hardest I've laughed in a long time, thanks for that Blake!😂
Long time unicyclist here, also have taught many dozens to ride as well. The "just go" attitude is BEST for learning in my experience, but the grass just made it even tougher to start (although easier on the falling obviously, you had some tough falls). I enjoyed watching someone learn with no understanding going in, well done sir. I wish I could have been there to help, but you did great for a single days go!
The baby in the window laughing at silly daddy 😂
2:46 Lmao this is art... absolutely love this with the music
As someone who's been mountain unicycling for over 20 years now, that was excellent work! Wish I had learned that fast :)
You've taken your first step into a larger world.
Funny this popped up.... was going home from cannock chase and there was a guy who came out to his motorcycle, clearly just been on some trails on his UNICYCLE backed it away and rode home on his motorcycle.... i couldn't believe my eyes.
A few years ago I was stopped at the King and Bowen street intersection in Sherbrooke, QC, Canada.... Google street view that place, you'll get it. There was this guy coming down King Street hill, westward and rounded the corner quite nonchalantly onto Bowen on his unicycle... With a friggin' case of 24 beers on his shoulder!!! A true hero!!!!
Sorry Blake, I laughed from start to finish. Too funny
lmao i don't need the failarmy anymore
Blake is one tough dude. Put in a week’s worth of gnarly fails clips single-handedly.
This was so funny and brilliant! I sat and watched it with my daughter and we laughed all the way through. But absolutely fair play dude, you nailed it. In a single day that's mind blowing 😎
Can't deny - this was insanely entertaining!! 😂😂 Nick giggling behind the camera had me wheezing, shaking camera and all 😂😂
xDDDD the kid looking at her father with a smile is so fun
Blake, you're a man! 5:39 makes me laugh so hard.
I always wanna try this fun stuff because why not? 😂 checking local sites for used one 😂
Amongst unicyclists, a used one is the number one recommendation for learning:)
This just brightened up my day! Well done Blake!
A few years ago I was out for a hike, part of my rehab from falling off a roof I was working on. Got banged up real good. I was painfully going up a slight hill when a 60 something year old man passed me on a fat tire unicycle. I was completely awestruck at how awesome of a thing I was seeing and his age just inspired the f@+$ out of me. Never tried one, but the whole concept of seeing someone ride a trail, the hardest way possible was just awesome.
There are a few people who ride the entire 500 miles across Iowa on unicycles during Ragbrai.
Really really cool to see Blake try new stuff related to biking! learned to unicycle last summer in some days. The progress he made in such short period of time is incredible! Keep it up!
You did incredibly well! It's always great to watch someone learn, and you nailed it.
Brilliant entertainment. Great job Blake. Definitely worth a 👏
We'll Blake figured out work-from-home content creation 😂
Nice work 👍🏻 you did really well to learn in a day. Such a great feeling being on the trails on one wheel 😎
Love to see Blake try the unicycle in the wrong way but still with success 😂🎉
Great job showing your kid riciculous don't kill. (lol) So cuuuuuute !
That's brightened up my Saturday 😂😂😂
Thank you for saving me from sprains, strains, and broken bones! I was curious to try it, but not now, lol. Kudos to you on a job well done!
cryin from laughter i love these vids, blake always buzzing....fave presenter by far sorry to all u other beautiful presenters :)
This is the best video I’ve ever seen 😂 well done Blake! We love you!
I would really love to see how Blake can progress further on a unicycle! Its interesting watching the process of a pro learn something totally new to them.
Nice one Blake! Looks like you were getting the hang of it near the end there. To help with feet getting pinged off the pedals, a hand gripping and pulling up on the front of the saddle will help you greatly. Keep it up!
Blake, you're a trooper and an absolute gem of a guy!
And 'poor Nick', brilliant editing!
Uber thanks to you both.
Great show ever that GMBN has done. Have never laughed so hard in my life. More unicycle challenges, please 💯🤣
The opening was brilliant.
"Blake does something new" You know it's going to be entertaining in a uniquely Blake-stylee. Very impressive progession, sir!!
it wasnt *that* UNIque.
Great Effort 👌
Obviously you're gonna have to get Ed Pratt (back?) on the channel. He's just not long finished a muni trail across a country himself
and mimo seedler or jack for all the tricks
Got to be honest, don't care much for unicycling.
But with Blake being an absolute goofball on one, that's an immediate hit !!
Next video Mega Avalanche with Hank on unicycles ?
Man I never get sick of Blake😂
5:39 The funniest shit I've watched today. 🤣
Nope, I was wrong. The entire video is a laugh trip. Maybe I'll try it someday... maybe. XD
At times, you look like the Drunken Master from Jackie Chan's film. 🤣🤣🤣 James barely made it across the deck and into the arms of his long-suffering father, aka Hank's Dad. Well done!
Blake and Hank should do some crazy challenges on a unicycle since both already learned to ride them.
Best unicycle compilation of crashes that I resemble ever lol thanks
I love watching Blake putting his health at risk for our entertainment. ;)
AWESOME!!! i taught myself uni during covid, quite the learning experience👍👍👍 and painful lol
Great video, Blake. I feel your pain, but it has been hilarious watching you try to ride that thing.
Bloody Hell!!!! Body punishment. Good on you with the commitment Blake , very entertaining.
The best place to learn how to ride a unicycle is on a tennis court. Start by using the fence to ride along the perimeter. Once you get comfortable with that. Go back and forth using the net. The reason for that it allow the you to use the slack on the net gain more balance. Once your comfortable do it that, start using the post and ride without any assistance of the fence or the net. I wonder how many UPD’s he had to make this video. Wrist guards are highly recommended. Free mounting takes as long to figure out as it does to learn how to ride it.
This is NOT the video I should have watched just shortly after my hernia operation. I felt the pain all the way here in Canada. Still loved it though. Love the Blake challenges.
@blakesamson you are awesome dude! Funny as watching you master this, respect! I bet you were aching for days afterwards 😂
HILARIOUS! nice job
Well done Blake, that was bloody funny x
Blake is entertaining, gravitationally challenged, but the best presenter on this channel. You need to do a Hank and Blake adventure series.
Looking forward to part 2 mate.
Mega avalanche..? 😂
Oh and Blake, you had had the unicycle the wrong way round. The longer red bit is the front of the saddle. And for anyone wanting to try and learn, start with a wall or fence next to you and hold onto that when you first start.
😱 oh Blake...
@@gmbn He got there eventually 😂. Very impressed at how well he did though.
Another great way to learn is with a rotary clothesline.
@@johnoregan4221 Totally wish I had thought of that when I was learning. That sounds a great way to do it.
Or a friend and a long sturdy stick.
The friend hits you with the stick when you fall off :D @@johnoregan4221
Wheelies & manuals are monocycle enough for me. Wrong end of my fifties, I just don’t bounce like I used to😂
Best video I have seen today 😂
Very entertaining! My wife and I rode mountain uni (muni) for a short while. If you go a portion of the distance on uni, it feels like double the effort compared to a bike. It was cool to learn, but not nearly as enjoyable as mtb. You can't just chill when you're having an "off day", you gotta have your head in the game and you really can't relax.
grip on the sattle goes in front :D
i learned unicyling when i was 11 and i got on a bridge and drove along the railing
after learning i was going everywhere on it for years partly cause you dont have to get a ticket in public transport for unicycles here in germany
also there are mountain unicyles with big fat tires and brakes and everything its very fun if you can drive it
you can hop around on a unicycle by grabbing the seat grip for getting up ledges btw :D
Great job Blake. It looks very difficult
Blake is a monster loL, He never ceases to entertain ...... 👍
My 13 yr niece can unicycle like a pro .. I tried it 2x and I am useless but she can go for hours , not on a trail mind you
She told me the trick is to look ahead and 'think' it thru , like you are on 2 wheels .. but you need space as turning is lesson 2 LoL
(seems like after watching Blake it's easier for girls)
Blake and Pilgs smashing a bike park on unicycles would be epic! This was so good. 🤘🏻
Last year doing during a bike-demo some legend passed me on his unicycle. Pedaling his heart out down the road with a bottle of beer in each hand
proper comedy!!😂
The electric off road unicycle look like they could be a lot of fun and less time falling off.
It's a lot easier. I have a few. Front-back balance is managed by the unicycle, so that makes it A LOT easier.
😂 I loved the bush-hugger. This was a lot of fun to watch. I guess somebody will ask the roadies for chamois cream next time.
So difficult to think. But I have one. Also have a replaced hip so my thoughts on learning are slim to nil. Lol at 47... thanks Blake
Reason to stay up longer here in the US
❤
GMBN rules, pinkbike drools....
Unless Cathro is on 😋
Poor old Blake. Even the plants are picking on him. An amazing episode. Maybe next time get someone in who knows how to ride one. They could teach him to ride. Then do a full trail Brilliant presenters. Where do they find them. 😂😂And 🎉.
From watching DarkFest videos to this all in one breakfast viewing. Its been a few years but how about a return to DarkFest, this time on your unicycle? Thanks for the tears of laughter you brought to our breakfast table today!
Still have my offroad Unicycle in the garage I used to take with me to wales on the old welsh dragon series downhill tracks 😂
Clipless pedals the next upgrade for sure
Thank you for thid i needed a laugh. Also thinking about getting a unicycle
Love your videos blake, no unicycle for me. 2wheels is hard enough. 😊
Thanks Blake for the much needed belly laughs!
Okay, that was hilarious. But Blake really stuck to it, and did waay better than I ever managed.
I rode a Unicycle for a couple of summers when I was a kid....Then I ran into a Business associate who had genuine a Penny Farthing ...he held it while I climbed on....tough to balance and steer at the same time! I can see why they stopped making them as the build seemed totally impractical.....Really appreciated your efforts though Blake!
Maybe Blake will try one of those next! Thank you 🤘
The falling into the bush made me roll. 😂😂
I bought a unicycle aged 50 ! Spent hours trying to ride it ! Managed about half a mile on the road .Seriously hurt myself in the process… this made me laugh so much 😂
😂 omg I laughed so hard. Amazing performance 💪🏻. I think I I’ll stick to two wheels 😂
Yeah! great to see some municycling on the channel! It would have been more 'easy' if you had a proper muni and a view months to learn ride the unicycle. (Tip: always pull your seat up with the handle so you push your feet in your pedals)
Edit: PULL YOUR SEAT UP!!! Your almost there. And yes, unicycles belongs on the trail. Check a classic rides like Kris Holm.
Thanks for the tips. Sounds like we need to try again 😂
Kris Holm = goat
Laughed so hard!
You legend!
You had the unicycle the wrong way lol. I found it easier to learn on concrete rather than grass, found the grass slowed me down and was hard to ride on. Hurts more when you fall off tho
Ignore thw wrong way round comment he fixed it eventually 🤣
Rolling over your nuts is the worst part of learing to ride a unicycle!
I don't understand how riding one of these things is even possible...well done!
That will knock your confidence down a few rungs on the ladder.
when i was at coed-y-Brennan there was guys riding the red trail on unicycles! blew my mind, they have a brake and fat tyres
What an amazing effort. Congratulations!!! ...... but I suspect you need to upgrade to a kevlar, tubeless unicycle tyre.
That was frickin hilarious
Very well done Blake took me over a year to get that far on a uni 🤣
5:39 The reicarnation of Doddy's crash
The fact you rode it backwards for the majority of the time is quite impressive.
@gmbn and @blakesampson great video! Well done! However, the wife was very disappointed in the hot drink you had that clearly was not a cuppa tea! More like warm milk! 😂😜
Keep up the great videos! 👏
Blake's first attempt looked like mine. Then I held onto a chain link fence to get going 😂
You still make it look too easy compared to reality lol good job I’m knocking it out. Be safe :-)
