I bet you could borrow a Canon EF or RF 800 or 1200 mm lens for long enough to make an epic video... p1000 destroyer. Can you detect the flatness of plane-ets with it? Maybe
There are zero decent videos with them :( selfish owners
Hey Kasey, what about using that excellent Leica 200mm prime on the Olympus and use the Topaz software for 120p or 240p, just for fun? Have you try that combo? Oly colors with Leica magic...who knows?
Cheers from Portugal!

@@bdssoaz Already done that czcams.com/video/0Czz6y9urqU/video.html
This channel has become a kind of obsession for me because as an enthusiast Kasey goes through same thought processes and emotions as myself.
I feel the same man. First time ever that I’m anxiously waiting for this guy’s upload. What’s happening????
Well, he parodies our pointless, ill-informed ever-needy, greedy desires for a 'perfect' camera when we already have a good one. But I still might change to panny boy even though it has worse autofocus.
@@dannyjonze yes, you got a point. It is pointless really. I too have two great camera and lenses but I am on a quest to find the most mind blowing next camera. This thirst is never ending. But one thing I can say that I am never this obsessed with any other electronics , gear or equipment.
I’m not even a videographer and I love Casey’s hilarious videos (and his commitment to good analysis).
@HoboGardenerBen I hear you. I’m thinking maybe just stop doing photography all together.
I'm more into photography than video, but my back and forth deliberations have seen me go through the entire Fuji line-up since the X-T2 came out (in some cases buying the same camera back 2 or 3 times*), buying pretty much every prime in the system, then picking up the Sony A7RIV cheap, being won over by FF, selling all my Fuji stuff before selling the A7R IV and buying an A7C (I missed the smaller form factor of APS-C), then buying back an X-E4 with two pancake lenses and a GRIII to complement the Sony system... with about 15 film p&s on the side. I am fully aware I have problems. This channel feels like being part of a support group.
*Cameras I've owned at least twice: GR III, GR IIIX, X-E4 (three times) and X100V
Im heading towards that....
So... Which is the perfect camera?
@@bastian.michel Ha, much has changed in 2 months. I sold the a7C as the EVF was too small to enjoyably use for pro work, and the body is still a little big for *all* EDC/travel use. I now I have an X-E4 with 18f2 and 27f2.8 for every day and travel, and I have an A7RV for pro work and if I'm going somewhere I don't mind carrying bigger gear with me. There is no perfect camera!
@@ChrisGower I also own the a7C and dont like it. But for other reasons. I mainly shoot video and the stabilization is crap. Half CZcams is raving about it for it videocapabilities. Nightmare stab and no 4k 60p. My 2017 Pan G9 had that... Maybe ill go back to mft....
@@bastian.michel That is very true about the stabilization actually. I don't shoot video normally, but I spent time at home this Xmas and most of the family video I shot is pretty poor due me expecting the stabe to be far better than it actually is. My footage from last year's trip home with the Fuji X-S10 is so much better.
They are not deliberations, that is bad OCD or ADHD changing like that, the camera is something to take photos with, the small differences in many devices and the ability to make unlimited changes in modern software show a focus on consuming, not photography. Pick a system and a lens or 3 and get on with it. If you have the money, buy whatever you like and use them all .
I really love GH6. The best of both worlds. No tripod, no gimbals. With 2 lenses, you can make "everything" !
I’m always on the lookout for a new camera to put in a drawer.
lol.
Always an entertaining video, thank you! But...I've shot professionally for decades in Manhattan and through most of it, I only used a Canon camera or two with literally 3 EF lenses, a 28, 50 and 50-200 L zoom. And that was it, at least for 35mm gear (I also shot medium and large formats, so more gear for those specialties). Mostly, it's been an issue of finding the best (if not perfect) camera, and then training myself to fluidly work around its limitations.
BTW, on the GH6 I find that while the AF is pretty decent, your use makes AF really hard. All those leaves and details, not easy. You might find that switching to static AFS, and using the rear "AF ON" button in back might work better. Or even better: Set your focal point at your HYPER-FOCAL DISTANCE, and it may not matter where the birds are in the zone, they will remain in decent focus. I've done this even with a Canon or Sony cams.
Yeah, 2 bodies that are same or same mount are handy, one with 24-70 the other 70-200, otherwise one body, probably any body from Canon in last 15 years (or Nikon) and those 2 lenses and your set. The 24-70 will get the most use. Having what people think is the best camera wont improve your photography.
I like how you're really just taking pictures but doing it in video format. The video has so little motion happening that it's basically just a photograph. One of these days you'll admit that you have become a wildlife photographer unwittingly.
Slowing a video down to an actual still pace.. Caseh? 😁
little does he know that I'm watching these 600 fps Topaz videos on 2x speed
5:56 - You're better off not using focus peaking when using the EVF. Turn it off and make sure your EVF diopter is adjusted to as good as it can get for your eyes. Judge focus by sharpness on the EVF. You'll increasingly get better results when manually focusing through the EVF on wildlife. I'm such a Panasonic fanboy that I've even used cameras "they" don't want you to know about, like the Panasonic HC-X2000. The camcorder division isn't Lumix but I wish they talked to each other because that camcorder has a feature that is way better than focus peaking. It's called "Detail" and it sharpens edges of what is in focus. It's way more accurate and less distracting. We don't have that on Lumix cameras but I've used the PL 100-400 for critter videos extensively on the GH5 II and turning off focus peaking helped me a lot when using the EVF for manual focusing which is the same mediocre resolution as the GH6. I recommend you try this technique. Been using Panasonic MFT cameras since 2014 :)
Focus peaking works ok for larger areas far away. But if you want to focus on something smaller, it not that good. You could try turning the sensitivity way down close to zero, and possibly use it to get close. But I would still verify with your eyes after peaking says your close. If you have it high it puts a very large area in focus that really isn’t.
Totally agree about the 9mm 1.7. Amazing lens. All of the PanLeicas are so good.
Your videos are so entertaining and refreshing to watch. Keep it coming - don’t stop in your quest, good sir!
The GH6 saga continues! I’m with you on the ineffable quality of the GH6 - it is just fun to use. And the autofocus is *just* good enough to make its occasional abject failures charming. 😂
First of all, WE NEED you to go full circle and get the Mitakon 25mm, especially now that you enjoy manual focusing. I will be happy to donate to the cause. Kasey, you're correct, there really isn't anything else out there to replace the GH6/S1H combo I have. The footage is just too good to let go. I have the A7S3, Canon R5 and XT4. They all have their merits but I am always going back to my GH5/GH6/S1H...why do I do it to myself?
let me fly towards my hands is a sick track
The inevitable end to your wildlife videography gear quest is a Red V-Raptor + 400mm 2.8. Just think… Topaz from 8k 120p -> 16k 960p
You're right. There is something magical about that 200 prime. It has a better than live quality to it. The crispness of the detail is amazing. I had to watch it on the tv
I don't and I am a full time freelance photographer/videographer. I just want something reasonably priced but of professional grade, and is reliable so that I can deliver results for every shoot.
I'm using Sony because productions companies that engages me require Sony cameras for ease of editing across all photographers/videographers at events. Also there is a bigger market for Sony stuff on second hand market in my country.
When I listen to you, I start to wonder, how the hell all those wildlife filmers of the last century ever could even come close to win a prize for their footage with their ancient gear.
Because the gear is largely irrelevant, as long as it is a reasonable selection. I remember when DSLRs first came out, people in forums obsession over specs etc as if that is all that now mattered, meanwhile a guy I knew was making a motza shooting all sorts of things for large name clients whilst even using those throw away cameras at times. It was his vision and ability, not the camera specs that mattered. It was quite funny how hobbyists drooled over specs, actually, obsessed over them.
Best photography and vlog channel on CZcams! Waking up seeing if there is a new video can make or break a day! Always look forward to the quirky but insightful content with a healthy dose of humor. Puts a smile on my face while I sip my first cup of coffee. Glad you are keeping the Panasonic!
At 4:17 I think the HD120p pixel to pixel looks better IMO, its just that the focal point shifted, in the HD120 half of screen you have focus on the log at the back and the rear bird, which look great, but the birds at front are blurred. Also I noticed the background is a bit shaky in the 5.7k (presumably an ibis issue since using the entire sensor). Would be good to see you test mirror lenses - tokina recently released a new model. I use vintage 500mm with pentax mount on a reducing or non-reducing adapter for 720 and 1000mm FF equiv respectively whilst maintaining high sharpness. Can safely apply a modest 1.3x zoom in post if needed, from 4k footage. PS The topaz stuff is driving you mad.
I feel like the stabilization makes your GH6 footage a lot more pleasant to watch than the typical one from the Sony A7SIII.
How's the 240p by the way? I saw some comparisons and 240p had visibly more than 300p, but I don't know how much it applies to what you shoot.
You should try the Olympus 150-400mm f4.5 TC1.25 PRO!!😅 The best Lens ever! Look the comparisons against the Sony made from Mike Lane and Daniel J Cox
GH6 is my perfect camera because it has to be. I blew all my money on it.
Pixel to pixel looks more natural with less processing artifacts. It should look great if you apply a little processing in Topaz.
Punch in looks great, although it doesn't add isolation of the subject as a longer lens would. If you want that. It's lonely enough out there.
i had Panasonic and changed to Sony simply because of the focus and struggling in low light.i liked the Leica 100 400.it was always sharp across the full range.you should give it another chance as you will get fed up with the lack of reach from the 200.even try the Olympus 100 400.i am far from knowing what i am doing regards cameras but i believe if you struggle with something then it is time to change.my first time out with the Sony was better than the last time out with the Panasonic.as you say no system or camera is perfect but it's the one that makes your camera life easier is always the best option
11:58 the glory was ours!
Fun is very important. I enjoy the footage you obtain with the GH6 and that prime. It's stable and i really prefer that over the Sony.
The perfect camera lives in your heart… believe that you can get the shot that’s the magic and if fails just hope for a new update😂. A gh5 owner in tears
"90% squirrels and ducks!" - I love it!
When you break it down, that is so on point. 🙂
I love how much you have with Topaz and it is quite mind bending indeed.
Blackmagic seem to offer evfs with their new cams. (is it new? I don't know) Still no ibis and 120p max tho.
The pixel to pixel modes look better, you just have to make sure your shot is actually in focus. ;)
This channel has a become kind of obsession for me too, because i like his personality and im huge fan of his b & w short movies. My main intress is not those nerd related camera things, but that interest me too. Why we like Kasey so mutch? Why? Some things in life stays whittout good reason, maybe this is one of them. But why...? Good video again♥️🐘🌄🦜🌴👍😀!!!
wait, you captured a firecrest, thats one seriously cool lil critter
I shoot with a gh5 ..auto focus is wak but there's a trick of turning the synco scan on and shooting at 179ss rather than 180 ss... The auto focus is greatly improved .. not sure what magic they used but it's improved by about 33% ...not sure if the same trick can be used on the gh6 ???
I am going to test the 150-600 from fuji with my xt4 coming week. Hoping for nice results but i am almost sure the depth of field due to the high aperture is just not going to cut it. If only they released a prime with further reach than 200mm.
If possible, would you like to test the Olympus 300mm F4 on the Gh6 ?
Great story telling
I miss your Fuji XT-4 footage. It had magic.
I would love for you to try out the sony 100-400 GM. I know its less reach. But you can focus much closer! (98 cm!) almost macro. I think you will find it a lot more useful and fun in the summer when there is insects and stuff. It's also a lot smaller. You can feel kind of restricted with the 200-600 as you limit yourself to far away object. Also the size of it.
That was like the first lens I tried... czcams.com/video/hhLxxo5Z7e0/video.html
we found the perfect camera, It is time now to find the *Perfect Video Interpolation program* for slow mo. :)
ps: content is enjoyable as always.👌
I'm leaning towards buying a GH6 mainly for it's video capabilities. I have a Sony A7iii that I'm still very happy with for photos but I'm tired of Sonys rather crap video stabilization, or lack of. It's such a key element. I own a gimbal but it's just too messy to set up and cumbersome to carry around. Sadly there is no perfect camera but the GH6 looks best for video vs. price at the moment.
This topaz software is amazing but I would never exceed reducing speed 2x (artifacts) and increasing resolution 2x (looks oversharpened). Decent-looking 4K 600p would be blow me away!
Why am I obsessed over camera gear when I have absolutely no camera gear at all? I’m a broke hobo camera wanna be loser! Love your channel though, Kasey! So funny and enjoyable.
8:20 - and also the A7S III alone costs more than the GH6 and the 200mm prime combined.
The battery life is ridiculous, really. At least at home you can have it connected to a powerbank all the time and never run out.
The battery issue is worrying. For most formats that are not processing demanding there should be an option to disable the cooler.
Why would you be in those formats 😆

@@donflamingo795 My Sony FX30 fan only has kicked on in the high bit rate modes. 4:2:0 10bit 150mbs appears untouched.
Im wondering what most camera companies are doing nowadays when it comes to focus peaking
My EOS RP as well as the R7 has at least usable focus peaking, but when it comes to my EOS 550D i sold... you needed magic lantern first for this feature, but it was SUPER CUSTOMIZABLE, the strengh of the peaking information, as well as the color and how sensible it should be.
I dont want "sony-like" menues just to get more options for customization, but i really think EVERY manufacturer holds back so much features and capabilities at their products below the highest end models.
The EOS 550D turned with Magic Lantern literally (software features-wise!) into a professional camera with features you needed at least a 5D etc. You could even set the bitrates of the video mode manually and it also improved the cameras performance a lot. Showed me long ago already how heavy Canon cripples their cameras with the infamous Canon Cripple Hammer (copyright and patented by canon)
Z9 is great, but too heavy for what you're doing. R3 has 240p, and is surprisingly light, and nice to hold. I've had it in hand and was damn tempted to get it before I went nuts and picked up a gfx100s.
im curious have you experimented with shooting 1080p on your a7sIII and upconverting in topaz and comparing to native 4k on the a7sIII
that topaz processing seems to work magic
You could grab a fairly inexpensive Apple Mini M1, or spending a little more MAc Studio Ultra. It renders and plays videos really well.
But I didsike MacOS with a passion though. Still, video application is killer
I’m waiting for the day you slap a Zeiss Loxia lens on that Sony. It’s a lens made for adults (no auto focus/manual aperture) but it’s everything you’re looking for when it comes to rendering.
The pocket 4k doesn’t have ibis but it does have gyro data like catalyst browse and you use it in davinci resolve and it renders a million times faster.
And in my opinion there is no mirrorless that comes remotely close to how good blackmagics peaking is.
Love your content. I have a G7 that i bought to just do webcam stuff for streaming and now im getting into photography and videography. Mostly portrait style photos and streaming/cooking content. What lens do you suggest?
Try the Lumix 25mm 1.7 or Leica 25mm 1.4. Those are prime lens. Also a telephoto like the 45-150mm could be a good choice too. There's a cool one the Leica 12-60mm. And finally Leica 10-25mm or 25-50mm. Man! There's a lot to choose from because The Olympus ones are cool too and some anamorphic lens from Siriu. I suggest that you look up on the Internet what could be the perfect lens for your necessities.
@@RealStevenStifler So I just got the 25mm 1.7 and I have the 45-150mm i just hate the variable aperture on it. Someone suggested I get the 42.5mm (85mm equivalent) for my portraits. Thoughts?
@@JunebuggMedia best for portrait is the 56mm 1.4 sigma for mft, it's the closest Full frame bokeh you can get on a MFT
Have you ever tried to adapt an older lens from Nikon or Canon FD 300mm/2,8 L?
i loved it when the penguin flew off…
11:00 It looks Si-Fi. BTW What is wrong with Leica 1.4X converter? Is it really worse than cropping in post? Maybe in 5.7K it is but definately not in HD.
Stab has gotta be worth it.. we need a re-look of the LEICA 100-400... even if it's f/6.3
I apologize, I realize now the 200 prime is likely the premium option
Diminishing returns was what you were looking for
I would still like you to get a loaner and at least try the FX30 and bung on a 135mm F1.8 or a 70-200mm and see what super cropped 4k 120p is like with bird and squirrel focus enabled
It enabled in that mode?
@@z352kdaf8324 not sure but there is an interesting discussion in the Garfield's Adventures discussion in Heath McKinley's test shoot czcams.com/video/Zf739ZN0Y6I/video.html
Have you considered a Red Komodo? Canon RF mount. No IBIS. Not very good autofocus. 6K 40fps max. But it makes really pretty pictures.
I have the R7 with the RF100-400. It's incredibly small, light, and sharp. Autofocus is out of this world. Colors are amazing. Enhanced electronic stab gives you ridiculous reach and perfectly still footage. 1080 at 120fps looks surprisingly good. F8 hurts though.
8:54 : You got it right with the first word but added bs after it haha
Hey Camera Conspiracies, I am having trouble opening a Prores RAW 422HQ *.mov file taken from my Atomos Ninja V+ and Canon R5. Does Topaz Video AI not read RAW files???
everytime i hear that hands song i wanna oil up and hit the gym ^^
So how about a Canon R something with their 600mm prime?
120p in 2.7k on BM is noisy but you can get Ursa 12k, if you want specs then it's leading the industry :D
The perfect camera is the one you can forgive its flaws...enjoy the moments and their results - maybe. Satisfaction comes at the expense of frustration - what a luck for mankind that perfect shots are seldom :-)
Don't do it, buddy! Don't sell the Panny Boy! You know you'll regret it. It IS special!
Will you get a Sony a9iii?
the question is not to keep GH6 or not, but what replace it with ...
Good 👍
Wait until you find the Canon R5/R6 with the old 400mm f5.6 prime
you have the (perfect) tool [PL 200 + GH6]. Now DO IT!
That On the Spot Autofocus test was spectacular. If I was the camera I would have panicked and pooped in my pants! yes that's gross! Panny me!
Topaz really seems worth it.
Panny-boy survives another round! 👏
10:20 -- 5.7K definitely noisier/grainier.... And again, looks like Topaz by default does noise reduction when upscaling....
Just wondering how many weeks it took to render those few 8K seconds in Topaz? The penguin's probably died of old age now! 😂
We can laugh because of new Pentax KF.
The last (used) Nikon body and Tamron 35 1.4 was Jan. 2021. Not going to trade or be able to spend for Nikon Z. Anyway, I have several Nikon F bodies, DX, FX and pile of lenses. So after being in more because of the lockdowns and now retirement, I've been upgrading the stereo instead. So I just bought better headphone and a headphone amp (after a new turntable and CD recorder on 2020.)
It's not "300p" BTW. You can say 1080p60, meaning 1920x1080 pixels at 60fps. The "p" (progressive) is just there to distinguish it from 1080i(interlaced). Well you might be too young to even know what interlaced is... It was once relevant in CRT times. Whatever, rambling I am.
Hey m8, if you want to use slow mo Topaz, make sure you shot the shutter speed 180° rule times the intended multiplier for how slow you wanted. That way you can avoid the interpolation look.
That means you should use Sony A7SIII 2nd base ISO which has been a blessing for my workflow
240fps slowed down 4x means that you should shot it at 1/2000 of a shutter. Hope this tips helps
The Dream-Quest of Unknown Camera
m4/3 is definitely in Special Olympics until Tony Northrup evaluates Leica Prime Toneh.
Hey, what would be the best (budget) camera for talking head videos, no outdoors, just a small desk setup with one big light. Number one priority: need the toneh since I hate my background and don't want to change the background, just want to add some lights behind me. Trying to start a channel (politics and shit), recorded several videos, content is fine for me and I like the audio editing, I just want the most toneh I can get and decent skin tone colors. Don't necessarily need 4k, a very good 1080p would be fine, 30p, lighting is... decent but would love something with good low light performance and as little noise as possible. Thanks for the videos, really entertaining!
Get a 3-5 year old camera with decent autofocus and then put your money into the lenses-specifically a prime with a 1.4 aperture. A good prime will give you the sharp focus, the autofocus keeps you in focus, and the large aperture gives you the bokeh. For your use, a zoom isn’t really useful. Focal length? Depends on how big your space is. Smaller space you’ll want a wider lens, but then it could be harder to get teh bokeh. There are director finder apps for your phone that can get you into the focal length ballpark before you buy a lens. I’ve never used one, so YMMV.
Do you already have a big soft source light? If not, get a China ball/Chinese lantern with a dimmable socket. Use a dimmable color balanced bulb. Start with a warm balance, but try a cold light if you want. Look for something with a CRI of 90 or better. I wouldn’t put an RGB bulb as your source, but if you want to spend some bucks on a lightbulb, you could get a RGBWW bulb. For your purposes, it’s overkill, but I think they’re neat.
The thing I’ve noticed with some LED bulbs is they can pick up a flicker when dimmed. In my experience, it’s less of a quality with high end household bulbs.
Good luck.
@@MarcosElMalo2 thanks for the help. I am pretty sure I want the SIgma 16mm F1.4. for APSC or a 24-35mm 1.8 for fullframe. I do have a big source of light, actually a pretty good LED panel I got SH, flicker is not an issue.I don't know if I need APSC or a very old fullframe to get the good bokeh, good skin tones and low noise. I tried a friend's M50 and I don't like it at all when it comes to noise, colors are really good though. Tried a ZV1 from another friend and dear god it's just fugly in colors and I don't want to mess around too much with color correction, to be honest it just looks like I am sick or something lol. It's also oversharpened as fuck and if I turn down sharpness in the picture profile it kinda loses detail not only sharpness, feels like my eyes are blurry and that's really bad for the videos I want to make. ZV-E10 could be better since it has the new color since, but didn't get to test it. Found a good deal for the EOS R but don't know if I should invest in that, also I think the glass is going to be quite expensive too. Any camera model recommendations would be appreciated, have a great one!
@@AI3Dorinte The bigger the sensor, the better the bokeh is what I’ve always been told. Some knowledgeable pros have been picking up old Arri 2k cinema cameras for the sensor size and color science. even though the resolution is low. (Probably not good for your need for autofocus, though.)
I can’t make a specific recommendation because I’m still waiting for the perfect camera. 😂 I’m sure 2023 will be the year. 😉 Most of my pre-retirement experience was lighting, and most of that was pre-LED. I think I have a grasp on the basics, and if my paltry knowledge was helpful, mission accomplished. Deep down we all knew a7s3 was (and still is) the ultimate camera for youtube hobos, the search for the perfect camera is over. But ima still gonna watch your videos 'caz you're funny :D
My Sony α7R II still works fine for me. 🤷♀
You may need to think about what devices your clips will be played on. Anything above 4k is overkill perhaps???...Keep in mind that hardware that plays native above 4K does the live, on the fly upscale, within its own rendering guts.
Get A7IV and use aps-c mode with 200-600. It has better noise ratio and better rolling shutter than FX30. Only 60p in 4k but you could use topaz to get 120 and up right?
That’s good info about the rolling shutter. Thank you. I’ve been obsessing over my next camera purchase for the past 12 years. Because of my inability to make a decision, I just keep buying lighting and grip gear. There’s always a better sub-$2000 camera around the corner I should wait for, and meanwhile I seem to be getting by with my phone’s camera.
My next two purchases are going to be a cheap and light welder and a sewing machine so I can make a full set of flags, nets, and silks.
@@MarcosElMalo2 🤣🤣
Why do I watch your channel 🤣🤣🤷🏿♂️
Still watching tho
Pixel to Pixel didn't have any shimmering artifacts. Maybe it just me?
LOL....this channel is still here. The best thing I ever did was to give up photography.
Man i loved it when Andrew Beckett was still on the Show..
