- Sony is gaining on Canon. Canon has been #1 forever. Hard to beat Sony, except the colour science of course. Today we're trying out some fun stuff with the Sony A7S III and 200-600mm in Topaz Video Enhance AI. Is it better to slow 4k 120p down further, or upscale HD 240p? We'll do some side by sides.

I can only afford one light bulb in my triple lamp too.
I recently tried it with some camera trap footage. Surprisingly how well it worked most of the time. Managed to get it to 50fps from about 15fps and upscaled to 4K.
The fish sympathizes you getting tied watching it get eaten.

Wow! Unbelievable footage of the heron! National Geographic-worthy! Also loved the yellow bird (finch?) on the golden rod at the end.
The best use for Topaz in nature footage seems to be to leave the resolution and only slow the frame rate. 4K at 120p slowed to 240p looked good, no processing artifacts.
Generally only works for slow moving subjects though.
Had I known last July that canon will ban third party lens makers i would have bought a sony A7R3 instead of the Canon RP
The a7r3 is great value full Sony price today $2000..battery lasts all day..I do carry a spare as video is heavy on them...42megpix is enough I mainly use my p50 & rx100 these days but going out with the A7R3 18mm batis 35 & 55mm Zeiss is great fun and gets great results
Dude what a mistake! Sorry to kick you when you’re on the floor but the a7r3 has an amazing sensor and focuses much better than the rp. It also has great super 35 4K (very detailed) I regretted selling mine to buy the a74

I filmed Herring a few weeks ago , yes they are patient birds then make big moves out of nowhere . The one I filmed gave me an shoulder and arm workout too 😅 but I got a few interesting clips of him flying with the A7IV
There's a big difference between Herring and Heron. I'm pretty sure it's the Heron that's patient.
just go to Home Depot, Lowe's or Costco; there are always birds indoors and flying around.

IMO the best use for Topaz Video AI is uprezzing HD to "4k". IQ is nowhere close to 4k but it's better than HD. It does a nice job reducing noise. I don't like Topaz for slowing down the timeline -- too many problems unless the subject is isolated and moving slowly. Right now I'm trying to decide whether to trade my A1 for an FX6 (i.e. trade resolution/acuity for built-in ND's and picture cache) and rely on Topaz to improve IQ, or switch over to the Z9 for the superior oversampling IQ, but you frame rates is limited to 120p. :-(
Please do a comparison between Topaz and Davinci Resolve Studio's super scale. So, might learn something?

So I believe the path you are going down will lead you using a good tripod and a good tripod gimbal head or a good ball head to help track those jumpy balls of fluttering feathers. Lol. Helps support the weight of those lead lined and concrete filled lens when the cinema is yours as you capture the magic. Sure they will only cost you your first born and a couple of appendages, but hey, when has capturing the cinema been cheap… just ask Hollywood… lol. Thanks for sharing the magic! Great content!

The GH6 is amazing..fixed in a studio .it might be up there with the ZV1..outside why not try a P50PRO..its a bit lighter than the A7S3 & 600mm ???A Nikon zv9 with the budget 600mm prime..good for street??be great if you compare it with the P40/50pro...which has the best slow mo? Vlogging with the Z9 will be hilarious! How about the Z30 though?! See if they have the megadap v2 adapter and put a G or GM lens on the Nikon. I use it on my Z50 for the 15f1.4G. I don't use the aperture ring, but I like that it is there and that it can be indexed or smooth. I just wish it wasn't 1/4 step indexed. 1/2's or full steps are good enough for my uses.

@rebelhiker Yeah, but he could do the same thing with the A1, renting it. I suggested this because he never had a Nikon camera to test in wildlife. Will he like it's colors? Will he like the stab? AF? Video quality? That's the point, we know it's too heavy, but that's not the full picture. It seems like he would enjoy testing it, so this may be an option
It's taken me forty years to get a shot like that Egret swallowing a giant fish and you just swan on down to your local fish pond and get it you with your A7siii and Sony 200-600mm and you 240 fps or whatever! Seriously well done to think only a few years ago you were morbidly obese and unable to get out of bed more power to you dude!(sometimes I make myself laugh) 😂

Which algorithm in Topaz?
I really need some advice of all you smart people here: I want to change my system and got around 4000€ to spend. I really have no idea where to go. I try to shoot sports as much as i can, skateboarding and Moutainbiking, but in between i also like to shoot a little street, events, landscape. I almost never film but would like to do it more often. I want to get a fisheye, a 35mm 1.2-1.6, 70-200mm 2.8 for now. I buy everything used. If money wasnt a factor i would probably go with the Z9. For now Im undecided between: A7 IV, A9, A7R IV, R6 lenses are so expenisve though, but also stuff like the Canon 1DX II or a Nikon D5, maybe a Z6 II in hope of a very good Z6 III. What do you think?

Upsacling resolution is easier than creating "fake" frames.
In the PC gaming world, there's outstanding upscaling techniques like DLSS and Intel XeSS that can not only upscale but also improve the native image by remove aliasing, remove flickers etc....
But "creating" fake frames is much harder. DLSS 3 is such a technology but it's in it's infancy.

I've not long recieved my Canon R7 which I ordered for wildlife purposes. Might be a nice cam to test out for you. I haven't had the chance to do any robust testing in regards to the video side but on paper the specs are ok.
I don't do video, but I do shoot ahole birds with mine and the focus tracking is crazy good once you're locked on. Those little shits never get away now.

I bought that Topaz software last week. The results are extremely impressive, but holy cow, my computer becomes basically unusable while it processes.
That's because Windows PCs are garbage. I switched to a Mac Mini with Apple silicon. No problems now

@@smashingfables6307 Those things aren't anywhere near magical. Maybe M1 Max, but the regular M1 chip performs nowhere near what some reviewers were claiming. Full of throttling even on the regular 13" M1 MBP (which I assume is close to the Mac Mini).
MacOS is also utterly crap for photo file management without any custom columns for exif data. Huge dealbreaker for hybrid shooters. The more I use M1, the more I believe M1 only works as portable solutions since not a single Windows laptop can come close to M1. I'd never use a desktop version of Apple Silicon. Windows for power usage, M1 for portability.
@@professionalpotato4764 you obviously have never tried both systems for video editing. I could care less about photography which I find is also way better on Mac. I have a high end Windows laptop with 32gb of RAM and gaming video card. It’s absolutely shit for anything creative. Good for Excel though
@@smashingfables6307 Dude I work in Disney doing editing and I have used both ends of the spectrum. Machines that I don't even want to think about the cost, whether it's Mac or Windows. The dual xeon cpu in the Windows machine ALONE costs the same as an m1 max. We stopped using Mac mostly for workflow issues, but the Windows machines are insane. I'm rendering 45min ProRes422hq shows in 4mins or under. Not sure if the M1 Ultra maxed out can do that. I've yet to try one.

you're pimping Topaz way too hard. it's not that great IMO. even on a mild upres i can see the artifacts without even trying.
This is the same guy who prefers high frame rate (and therefore high ISO) video and likes the results from cameras with stupid low res sensors like the A7S III. He uses crop modes on full frame cameras and calls it magic. He clearly doesn't care about artifacts.

Don’t really know enough to make an informed decision. Example. If you knew how bad Sony menu’s were compared to others you wouldn’t even consider a Sony. If you shoot wildlife/sport in fast motion at distances requiring 400mm or longer lenses then Sony is on your radar, and you’ll have to live with all the bad.
